Application of LyondellBasell HDPE ALATHON L5005

ALATHON L5005 from LyondellBasell is an injection-moulding high-density polyethylene with nominal density 0.954 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1 and melt mass-flow rate 5.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg under ISO 1133-1. The application scope is confined to rigid injection-moulded articles in which melt-flow geometry, shrinkage envelope, and oxidative stability permit reproducible production without reactive modification. Each downstream segment identifies the applicable compliance instrument, additive or colourant loading window, processing route, and terminal part class. Where a property threshold is grade-specific and no published measurement exists for L5005, that limitation is stated.

How a 5.0 g/10 min Melt Flow Rate Modifies Filling Pressure in Thin-Wall Dairy Cups

Prior to tool design for thin-wall dairy cups and margarine tubs, the viscosity of L5005 places the grade in the intermediate-flow segment of HDPE; it is not an ultra-high-flow polypropylene nor a low-melt-index blow-moulding HDPE. The compliance position rests on FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 for olefin polymers used in contact with aqueous, acidic, and fatty foods under the prescribed extractives limitations, and on Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, Annex I, Table 1, with the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² or 60 mg/kg for finished articles. A representative formulation for a 200 mL cup uses 96.5–98.0 wt% L5005, 1.5–2.5 wt% white colour masterbatch based on an HDPE carrier, 0.10–0.30 wt% nucleating masterbatch to elevate crystallisation temperature and shorten cooling time, and 0.05–0.10 wt% acid scavenger masterbatch. Slip and antiblock loadings above 0.20 wt% are avoided because they can lower hot-tack performance during in-mould labelling and create organoleptic migration into high-fat contents. Production on stack moulds with 4+4 or 6+6 cavities requires accumulator-assisted injection speeds of 250–400 mm/s, screw L/D of 20:1–24:1, melt temperatures of 205–230 °C, and mould temperatures of 8–15 °C; at wall sections of 0.8–1.2 mm, filled length is controlled by injection speed and gate diameter rather than melt temperature alone. Terminal articles include 125–500 mL dairy cups, margarine tubs, and dessert pots with snap lids.

Process conflict exists in the relationship between high-speed filling and organoleptic stability. Raising melt temperature above 230 °C reduces viscosity but increases oxidised interfacial layers at the gate and may raise odour and off-taste in dairy contact. Mould temperature below 8 °C chills the surface too quickly and may increase oriented skin residual stress, leading to splitting at snap-fit rim features. For wall sections below 0.7 mm, published data for L5005 specifically is limited; capillary rheometry per ISO 11443 and a spiral-flow trial on the actual stack mould are required before specifying injection velocity and gate diameter.

Closure torque retention and environmental stress crack resistance in linerless cap moulding

In high-speed closure manufacturing, L5005 is run in 48–96 cavity hot-runner moulds where melt homogeneity at the gate tip and valve-pin shut-off control the inner sealing diameter to ±0.05 mm. The applicable compliance framework includes FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, supplemented by EC 1935/2004 Articles 3 and 15 for organoleptic inertness; migration testing of the finished closure is performed on the seal contact surface under 40 °C/10 days for aqueous and fatty simulants. A representative formulation for a tamper-evident beverage cap is 95.0–97.5 wt% L5005, 2.0–3.0 wt% white masterbatch, 0.20–0.40 wt% slip agent masterbatch where release torque below 1.5 N·m is specified, and 0.10–0.20 wt% antioxidant masterbatch. The choice to add slip is product-specific; excessive slip level migrates to the sealing surface and can interfere with induction seal foils or printing inks. The downstream process is injection moulding at melt 200–220 °C, mould 10–25 °C, injection pressure 80–110 MPa, holding pressure 40–70 MPa, and cycle time 4–6 s for multi-cavity tools. Tamper-evident bands are moulded as an integral extension and then slit through a rotating knife station immediately after ejection; dimensional audit uses ISO 1183-1 for density verification, ISO 1133-1 for lot-to-lot MFR control, and ASTM D1693 condition A for ESCR screening at 50 °C. Terminal parts are 28 mm and 38 mm closures for still and carbonated beverages, dairy drinks, and liquid food bottles.

The operational boundary for hot-fill closures is set by stress relaxation of HDPE at elevated temperatures. Hot-fill service beyond 85 °C requires creep testing of the seal geometry because clamping force retention can decay through the neck finish. Barrel residence above 240 °C during production stoppage is not recommended; sustained hold at elevated temperature may initiate oxidative chain scission that lowers cap torque retention and increases odour. Pro-oxidant masterbatches and recycled content from unspecified post-consumer sources are excluded from linerless food-contact closure formulations unless migration testing on the actual finished part establishes conformity with the intended condition of use.

When 20 L Open-Top Pails Must Pass UN Drop Testing, Gate Position and Cooling Rate Govern Impact Ductility

In industrial pail production, the processing window of L5005 is coupled to wall-thickness consistency and low-temperature drop performance rather than high melt flow. Compliance for pails used to carry dangerous goods is evaluated against UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1 and the modal provisions such as 49 CFR § 178.502; packing group II requires a drop height of 1.2 m, while packing group I requires 1.8 m after conditioning at −18 °C. Food-contact pails additionally require FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011; pails exposed to outdoor UV are commonly stabilised with 0.20–0.50 wt% hindered amine light stabiliser masterbatch and 0.10–0.30 wt% antioxidant, while the L5005 base resin occupies 94.0–97.5 wt% and colour masterbatch 1.5–3.0 wt%. The downstream process is a single-face injection mould with a valve-gated hot runner feeding the centre of the pail bottom; wall thickness is 1.8–2.5 mm, clamping force on a 20 L pail commonly falls between 8,000–15,000 kN, melt temperature is held at 210–230 °C, mould temperature at 15–25 °C, and cooling time 12–18 s depending on wall section and steel conductivity. The principal processing conflict is that fast cooling improves cycle time but reduces crystallinity and can raise the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, whereas a mould temperature above 25 °C aggravates sink marks above the rim and worsens ovality.

Regrind usage should not exceed 30 wt% without melt filtration through 100 µm screens because unfiltered char or degraded gel particles act as crack initiation sites under −18 °C UN drop conditions. If the pail is intended for solvent-based coatings or adhesive fills, ESCR screening per ASTM D1693 condition B should be added to the lot acceptance programme. Terminal parts are open-top pails of 5–25 L with independent lids and metal or plastic wire handles, used for coatings, adhesives, food ingredients, and industrial powders.

Returnable logistics crates and ventilated cold-chain totes are moulded from L5005 where the article geometry includes deep draw, ribbed sidewalls, and snap-fit stacking lugs that demand high notched impact at sub-zero warehouse temperatures. The applicable compliance instruments are REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII restricted substances and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU only when electronic tagging or RFID components are co-moulded; purely plastic crates are outside the RoHS electrical scope. A robust compound can be run at 95.0–98.0 wt% L5005 with 1.5–3.0 wt% colour masterbatch and 0.20–0.40 wt% antioxidant/UV stabiliser masterbatch; regrind from sprues and rejects is incorporated at 20–30 wt% only after melt filtration through 100 µm screens to reduce char particles that nucleate cracks at handle weld lines. The downstream route is multi-gated injection moulding with sequential valve gating to displace weld lines away from handle and corner load paths; screw diameters of 70–120 mm, L/D 20:1–24:1, melt 210–235 °C, mould 15–25 °C, and holding pressure 45–75 MPa are common. Back pressure is kept at 0.3–0.6 MPa to avoid excessive melt-temperature rise, and nozzle decompression is set to prevent drool during ejection. Masterbatch stored at relative humidity above 60% should be dried at 70–80 °C for 4 h before letdown. The terminal articles are stackable dairy crates, bakery trays, cold-chain louvered totes, and returnable distribution boxes in the 400–600 mm length range; published data for L5005 in this exact rib-thickness configuration is limited, so mould filling and shrinkage should be verified with a spiral-flow tool and ISO 294-4 plaque.

Where non-food housewares and toy components are injection moulded from L5005, the main requirement is low residual colour migration and absence of restricted metal content rather than high ESCR. Compliance for toys in the European Union rests on EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration limits for nineteen elements, while the U.S. route is 16 CFR Part 1303 for lead and ASTM F963-23 for heavy metal extractables; housewares sold in global trade are evaluated under REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 for phthalates, which are not introduced by HDPE but must be verified when recycled content or flexibilising agents are added. A typical formulation contains 93.0–96.5 wt% L5005, 2.0–4.0 wt% colour masterbatch, 0.30–0.70 wt% antistatic masterbatch for dust-sensitive storage articles, and 0.05–0.15 wt% acid scavenger; the balance is processing stabiliser. The downstream process uses open cold-runner moulds when texture and colour changes are frequent: melt temperature 195–215 °C, mould temperature 10–25 °C, injection pressure 60–90 MPa, and holding time 3–6 s per millimetre of nominal wall. For storage totes with textured outer surfaces, high gloss is avoided by specifying VDI 3400 texture and reducing the injection velocity below the jetting threshold. Terminal parts are non-food storage boxes, toy bins, and component housings.
