Application of Lotte Chemical STAREX® MABS TX-0570

What ISO 10993 Screening Data Are Required Before Molding Transparent Diagnostic Housings?

Transparent diagnostic housings manufactured from STAREX® MABS TX-0570 require a regulatory file that distinguishes non-patient-contact enclosure use from transient clinically applied surfaces. For injection-molded benchtop analyzer windows, portable glucometer top housings, and handheld immunoassay reader bezels, the applicable biological evaluation is driven by ISO 10993-1:2018 categorization by body contact duration. When the part is classified as surface-contacting with intact skin for a limited duration, leachable assessment follows ISO 10993-18:2020 for chemical characterization, supported by in vitro cytotoxicity testing under ISO 10993-5:2009 with L-929 mouse fibroblast cells. If the device manufacturer’s risk management file under ISO 14971:2019 concludes that the housing can be touched by the patient for more than 30 days, sensitization and irritation data under ISO 10993-10:2021 and ISO 10993-23:2021 are required. The formulation addition ratio for TX-0570 in such housings is normally 100 wt% virgin resin, with no regrind exceeding 20 wt% of the shot weight because visual inspection under D65/10° illumination cannot separate contamination-induced haze from chemical incompatibility without destructive FTIR. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, closed containers at the feed throat are limited to 30 min open residence time. Pre-drying is performed at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant-bed dryer to reduce residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; exceeding this moisture level at melt temperatures above 240 °C produces splay on polished tool surfaces. The downstream production process uses a 30 mm general-purpose screw with an L/D ratio of 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1, paired with a 150 t electric injection-molding machine. Hot-runner valve-gate sequencing is set to maintain a melt cushion of 3–5 mm and a backpressure of 5–10 bar; cavity sensors are needed when wall thickness falls below 1.2 mm. The resin lot certificate should record melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg so that barrel temperature profiles can be aligned to lot-specific viscosity. Terminal finished product types include transparent diagnostic meter front shells, analyzer bezels, lateral-flow reader windows, and optomechanical light-pipe covers. The operational boundary is that TX-0570 should not be exposed to alcohol-based quaternary ammonium disinfectants for repeated wipe cycles without validation, because stress crazing in MABS under cyclic alcohol loading is a known field failure mode; published data for this exact grade and disinfectant combination is limited.

In cosmetic packaging plants running transparent thick-wall overcaps and jar shanks, STAREX® MABS TX-0570 is substituted for standard ABS when low haze and high surface polish are required after repeated skin-oil contact. The applicable industry compliance framework combines Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for cosmetic pack compatibility, Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste with a total lead-cadmium-mercury-chromium(VI) concentration below 100 mg/kg, and Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 REACH Annex XVII restrictions. Because the pack is not sold as a food-contact article, Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 GMP for food-contact materials is not automatically binding, but converters often request a declaration of conformity against EU 10/2011 migration standards when the jar is used for balms containing mineral oil. The formulation addition ratio is normally 100 wt% TX-0570; transparent color is produced with 0.3–1.2 wt% of a solvent-dye masterbatch pre-dried at 80 °C for 2 h, and higher masterbatch loadings increase haze measured under ASTM D1003-21. The downstream production process is two-stage: pre-drying in a closed-loop desiccant dryer for 4 h at 80 °C, then injection molding on a 160–250 t hydraulic toggle press using a screw diameter of 35–45 mm and injection speeds of 40–90 mm/s. Mold temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 60 °C; lower mold temperatures reduce cycle time but produce flow lines in thick-wall closures. Pack-and-hold pressure is staged from 55 bar to 25 bar over 6 s to avoid internal voids in wall sections above 4 mm. Terminal finished products include jars, double-walled jar overcap shells, lip balm oval tubes, and clear display pedestals for point-of-sale stands. The material is not recommended for long-term contact with perfume concentrates or solvent-based nail lacquer reservoirs; ester and aromatic ketone solvents can induce environmental stress cracking, and any such packaging application requires 48 h strain-jig testing under ASTM D543. Published data for this specific grade in mascara reservoir use is limited.

Clear Earbud Enclosure and Charging-Case Shell Molding

Transparent acoustic enclosures and charging-case shells made from STAREX® MABS TX-0570 are evaluated against IEC 62368-1:2023 clause 6.4 fire enclosure requirements only where the part functions as a fire enclosure; internal non-fire-enclosure decorative transparent shells are exempt from that clause. The electrical safety file typically cites IEC 62368-1:2023, while restricted substances documentation follows EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II. The formulation addition ratio for visible case shells is 100 wt% TX-0570 with a 0.5–1.0 wt% light-diffusion masterbatch if the LED indicator is edge-lit; the masterbatch carrier must be MMA-compatible, not PE-wax, to avoid localized delamination at knit lines. The downstream process uses a 120 t all-electric injection-molding machine with a 25 mm screw and L/D 20:1; clamp force should not exceed 100 t for a two-cavity cold-runner tool with polished SPI A-1 cavities. Melt temperature is maintained at 220–240 °C and mold temperature at 45–55 °C; injection speed is profiled from 60 mm/s at gate entry to 20 mm/s at fill completion to eliminate jetting. After molding, parts are annealed at 60 °C for 2 h when a UV-curable hardcoat is to be applied, because frozen-in stress causes hardcoat delamination. Terminal finished product types include transparent earbud stem covers, charging-case outer lenses, and translucent desktop audio control rings. TX-0570 should not be specified for components exposed to isopropyl alcohol wipe disinfection more than once per shift unless the hardcoat supplier confirms adhesion after 500 cycles; uncoated MABS can haze under aggressive alcohol cleaning. Published data for this specific configuration in ANC microphone port grilles is limited.

Vacuum cleaner dirt-cup transparency retention after multi-cycle exposure to household dust surfactant solutions is a primary qualification criterion when STAREX® MABS TX-0570 is evaluated for floorcare applications. The applicable industry compliance standard is IEC 60335-1:2020, with component-level mechanical requirements from IEC 60335-2-2:2019 for floor treatment appliances; EU 10/2011 overall migration limits apply only if the dirt cup is marketed with dry debris contact and separately tested by the converter. The formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% TX-0570 without impact modifier dilution; adding external MBS core-shell impact modifier at 5 wt% increases notched Izod but lowers transparency and is not recommended for dust-cup walls above 2 mm. The downstream production process requires a large shot weight: a 350–500 t hydraulic injection-molding machine with a 60–70 mm screw and accumulator-assisted injection speed above 120 mm/s to fill flow lengths of 300 mm at wall thickness 2.5 mm. Mold temperature is set to 50–65 °C; pack-and-hold pressure is held at 50–70 bar for 8–12 s to reduce sink at boss-adjacent ribs. Because dust cups are large transparent parts, the resin must be dried to 0.03 wt% moisture or less using a -40 °C dew-point desiccant dryer before processing. Terminal finished product types include transparent vacuum cleaner dirt bins, removable debris bowls, and hard-floor nozzle windows. The operational boundary is that cyclic contact with cationic surfactant-loaded cleaning water above 50 °C is not supported by published data for TX-0570; converter-level tests under IEC 60335-1:2020 and IEC 60335-2-2:2019 for mechanical strength are necessary before series production.

When EN 71-3 Migration Limits Apply to Transparent Toy Components

Because toy safety assessment is jurisdictionally fragmented, transparent toy components made from STAREX® MABS TX-0570 must satisfy three overlapping chemical frameworks: EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements in dry, brittle, liquid, and sticky toy material categories; ASTM F963-23 for US market heavy-metal soluble limits; and CPSIA Section 101 for lead plus Section 108 for phthalates. The formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% virgin TX-0570 with no post-consumer recycled content and no regrind above 10 wt% because documentation for recycled MABS under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 supplier declarations is not standardized. Colorants and additives are limited to 1.5 wt% total loading; each pigment must carry an EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 Certificate of Analysis that individually reports chromium VI, barium, and zinc extraction. The downstream production process uses a 100–150 t electric injection-molding machine with a 30 mm screw and a shut-off nozzle to prevent drool; melt temperature is kept between 220 °C and 230 °C to minimize polymer degradation products that might alter extractable profiles. Mold temperature is 35–50 °C, and the tool is purged after every color change using a glass-fiber-reinforced PC purge compound to reduce cross-color contamination. Terminal finished product types include transparent toy instrument windows, animal-shaped storage shells, kaleidoscope housings, and building-block display elements. The material is not intended for mouthing-intensive toys in children under 36 months without end-product EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 geometric and physical testing; no claim is made that TX-0570 is inherently compliant because compliance depends on additive package and conversion conditions.

Office Equipment Opto-Mechanical Parts Without Exterior Luminance Loss

For office automation equipment, transparent paper-path windows and control-panel light guides made from STAREX® MABS TX-0570 are evaluated under IEC 62368-1:2023 for the finished apparatus, with substance restrictions under EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 REACH Annex XVII. The formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% TX-0570 for light guides and transparent cover windows; a 0.2–0.5 wt% blue-violet toner masterbatch may be used to correct yellowing perception but not above 0.5 wt% because transmission falls below 85% at 3 mm when measured under ASTM D1003-21. The downstream production process is high-cavitation injection molding with an 80 t electric press, a 25 mm screw, and a hot-runner system with individually controlled valve gates in a 4-cavity or 8-cavity tool. Melt temperature is set at 230 °C, mold temperature at 45 °C, and cycle time at 35–45 s for 2 mm nominal wall sections. Terminal finished product types include transparent cover windows for document feeders, paper-tray level indicator lenses, and LED light pipes for office machine status displays. The material is not recommended for fuser-area components or any location with continuous service above 80 °C; MABS heat distortion under load is lower than polycarbonate and the grade is intended for ambient-temperature optomechanical parts.

    More Introduction

Lotte Chemical STAREX® MABS TX-0570 is a transparent methyl methacrylate–acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer manufactured by continuous bulk polymerization. The polymer architecture consists of a styrene–acrylonitrile matrix copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and dispersed polybutadiene rubber domains. The methyl methacrylate comonomer adjusts the refractive index of the matrix toward that of the butadiene phase, reducing internal scattering and enabling transparent injection molding. Within the STAREX MABS range, TX-0570 is positioned as a high-flow grade for thin-wall parts that require optical clarity and moderate impact resistance. Melt mass-flow rate determined in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg is approximately 20–25 g/10 min. Nominal density reported under ISO 1183-1:2019 is 1.08 g/cm³.

The grade is supplied as cylindrical or lenticular pellets with a bulk density between 0.55 g/cm³ and 0.65 g/cm³. Moisture handling is a critical boundary condition for TX-0570 because the methacrylate ester group is susceptible to hydrolysis. After 4 h of open storage at 23 °C and 60 % relative humidity, surface moisture can exceed 0.05 % by mass when measured by ISO 15512:2019 Method B. Pre-drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer with a supply air dew point of −20 °C or lower at 80 ± 5 °C for 2–4 h reduces residual moisture to below 0.05 %. Insufficient drying produces methanol and methacrylic acid volatiles that appear as silver streaks, internal bubbles, and gray haze near the gate.

Representative single-point values from the producer’s technical data sheet are summarized in Table 1. These values are not batch guarantees and must be verified for each shipment under the specified specimen preparation conditions.

Barrel temperature profiles recommended in producer processing guidance begin at 210 °C in the feed zone and rise to 240 °C at the nozzle, with mold temperatures maintained between 50 °C and 70 °C. Higher mold temperatures within that range reduce frozen-in orientation and improve haze uniformity in parts with variable wall thickness. The fill stage is typically adjusted to complete volumetric filling in 0.5–1.5 s for wall sections of 1.0–2.5 mm. Pack pressure is set between 30 % and 50 % of the peak injection pressure. Back pressure is held below 1.0 MPa to limit screw recovery shear heating, and screw surface speed is capped at 0.2–0.4 m/s. These settings reduce the risk of local barrel temperatures exceeding 250 °C.

What Distinguishes TX-0570 from PMMA and Transparent ABS Under Simultaneous Optical and Impact Loading?

Relative to PMMA, TX-0570 has a lower flexural modulus of approximately 2100 MPa under ASTM D790-17 and higher notched Izod impact strength of approximately 100 J/m under ASTM D256-10(2018). PMMA typically exhibits flexural modulus values of 3000–3300 MPa and notched Izod impact below 20 J/m. This combination reduces brittle cracking in snap-fit closures and lens retainers compared with PMMA. Relative to standard transparent ABS, the MABS chemistry of TX-0570 provides lower haze and higher visible-light transmittance through refractive-index matching of the rubber domains. However, the tensile strength of TX-0570 is below that of PMMA and comparable to transparent ABS, so design calculations must use the lower flexural modulus. Ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents cause crazing at tensile strains above 0.5 %. Alcohols and aliphatic hydrocarbons are generally tolerated at low strain, although swelling may occur at elevated temperature.

Capillary rheometry data for TX-0570 show pseudoplastic behavior. At 230 °C and a shear rate of 1000 s⁻¹, apparent melt viscosity is approximately 90–110 Pa·s; at 10 000 s⁻¹, it drops below 30 Pa·s. The viscosity decline supports filling of flow length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 200:1 when vent channels are at least 0.02 mm deep. Mold-filling simulation with Cross-WLF parameters from the producer is recommended for gate sizing. Gates should be sized to generate shear rates below 100 000 s⁻¹; higher shear rates can produce gate blush and reduce local transparency.

When the Melt Temperature Window Narrows to ±5 °C in Thin-Wall Molding

A process conflict appears in ultra-thin wall parts with nominal wall thickness below 1.0 mm. To maintain transparency, the melt temperature should remain below 250 °C; above 255 °C, the methacrylate segments begin to degrade and residual monomer regeneration produces visible splay. At melt temperatures below 225 °C, viscosity increases sufficiently to cause short shots in ribs and bosses thinner than 0.8 mm. Production-scale evaluations on a 120-tonne electric injection molding machine with a 20:1 L/D screw have shown that a melt temperature deviation of ±5 °C changes filling pressure by 8–12 % and can shift the part from a glossy transparent surface to flow marks or haze. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but the narrow window requires closed-loop nozzle temperature control with hysteresis below ±2 °C. Mold surface temperature must be maintained within ±3 °C across the cavity. In hot-runner systems, residence time at 240 °C should not exceed 10 min; dead zones with low flow induce brown specks and black spots. Screw recovery should be set so that melt residence time in the barrel is below 8 min at maximum throughput. In all cases, the process should be verified with molded-part haze measurements according to ISO 14782:2021 and tensile testing according to ASTM D638-14 on parts taken at the beginning, middle, and end of the run.

Applications for TX-0570 are reported in cosmetic packaging, transparent caps, medical device housings, electronic display windows, and office equipment lenses. In cosmetic caps, the low haze and high flow support thin-wall designs with snap-fit undercuts. Scratch resistance is lower than PMMA, so Class A surfaces require downstream hard coating if contact with abrasive materials is expected. Specific scratch data for TX-0570 is limited; published data for this configuration is unavailable. Medical housings require biocompatibility evaluation on the finished device per ISO 10993-1:2018; the raw resin itself does not establish ISO 10993-5:2009 conformity. Electronic display windows use the high-flow characteristic for zero-draft bezels, but continuous service temperature must stay below the heat deflection temperature of 84 °C at 1.82 MPa under ASTM D648-18. Outdoor use requires UV stabilizer masterbatch; unpigmented TX-0570 will yellow with QUV-A exposure above 500 h unless protected.

Optical Durability, Solvent Resistance, and Regulatory Documentation

Optical durability is constrained by the butadiene rubber phase, which is susceptible to thermo-oxidative yellowing. Continuous exposure at temperatures above 70 °C in air can raise the yellowness index by more than 2 units after 500 h when measured by ASTM E313-20. The material should be purged with a styrenic purge resin before and after shutdown to minimize black speck formation. Chlorinated solvents, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and ethyl acetate cause stress cracking at applied strains above 0.5 %. Methanol and ethanol have less effect but may reduce notched impact by up to 15 % after 24 h immersion; published data for this grade is limited. For secondary operations, ultrasonic welding is possible using 20 kHz equipment with amplitude below 30 μm and a weld time under 0.3 s. Adhesive bonding with UV-curable acrylics may be used, but the bond area should be strain-isolated to avoid stress concentration.

Regulatory documentation for TX-0570 should be requested from Lotte Chemical for each application. The resin is typically accompanied by a REACH statement under (EC) No 1907/2006 and a RoHS compliance statement under Directive 2011/65/EU. For food-contact applications, possible citations include 21 CFR 177.1020 for styrenic copolymers and 21 CFR 177.1010 for modified acrylics; the methyl methacrylate component makes grade-specific verification necessary. Pharmaceutical packaging and medical device use require additional extractables testing under ISO 10993-18:2020 and United States Pharmacopeia <717> if the plastic contacts the drug product. No certification is conveyed by raw resin documentation alone.
