Application of Lotte Chemical Starex® ASA WX-9951N

In automotive cowl vent grille production, Lotte Chemical Starex® ASA WX-9951N is processed as a weatherable injection molding resin for visible exterior trim where molded-in black or gray replaces painted PC/ABS and mineral-filled polypropylene. The component merges the windshield water deflector, louver ribs, and snap-fit bosses into a single molding, which removes secondary painting and lowers assembly operations. Tooling is configured with sequential valve-gated hot runners to reposition weld lines away from the visible surface; cavity venting is machined to 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm along rib intersections and gas trap locations to prevent burn marks and short shots. Pellet conditioning before injection uses a desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30°C, a setpoint of 80°C, and a residence time of 4 h; residual moisture is controlled at or below 0.05% by Karl Fischer titration before the material enters the hopper. In humid molding shops where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, open hopper residence time is minimized or the dryer hopper is insulated to prevent moisture regain. Nozzle melt temperature is maintained between 240°C and 260°C, and mold surface temperature is controlled from 50°C to 70°C to stabilize gloss and reduce post-mold warpage across slatted sections. Injection speed is profiled in the moderate-to-fast range with a fill time of 1.5 s to 3.0 s for a nominal 2.5 mm wall; hold pressure is maintained until gate freeze, generally 50 MPa to 70 MPa, to prevent sink marks above mounting bosses. Shot-to-shot cushion is held at 3 mm to 6 mm, and screw decompression is limited to 3 mm to avoid air ingestion into the melt stream. Weathering conformance is evaluated under SAE J2527 and ISO 4892-2; automotive OEM specifications commonly require a ΔE no greater than 3 CIE units and a grey scale rating of 4 or higher after 2500 kJ/m² to 3000 kJ/m² xenon-arc irradiance. Mechanical acceptance data are generated according to ASTM D638-14 for tensile properties and ASTM D256-23 for notched Izod impact, with specimens cut from molded plaques or end-part flat coupons. Finished components include cowl top covers, wiper motor covers, plenum closeouts, and windshield lower trim parts.

Why Do Unpainted Exterior Mirror Housings Require Controlled Rubber-Phase Particle Size?

Unpainted exterior mirror housings produced from WX-9951N are expected to retain low gloss, hide minor scuffing, and survive cold impact after years of direct solar exposure. The acrylic rubber phase in ASA is generated by graft polymerization onto an acrylate substrate; the particle size distribution and cross-link density are balanced to control impact energy absorption without sacrificing melt flow or surface appearance. Mirror housing tools are normally polished to SPI A-2 finish and gated on the hidden mounting face to avoid visible gate blush; cavity pressure transducers are placed near the end of fill to verify that hold pressure transfers uniformly into the curved shell. Drying at 80°C for 4 h to 0.05% moisture is essential because residual moisture appears as splay or silver streaks on the polished surface when the nozzle melt exceeds 250°C. Melt temperature is held at 245°C to 260°C, while mold temperature is kept between 60°C and 80°C to improve knit line strength around the mirror pivot boss. On high-gloss tools, nozzle temperature variation of ±5°C from the validated midpoint has been associated with visible gloss banding and gate blush. Low-temperature ductility is verified using ISO 180/1A with notched specimens at -30°C; automotive programs generally require no brittle crack initiation and a measurable ductile tear after impact. Weatherability is judged by ISO 4892-2 and SAE J2527, with post-exposure color change held to ΔE ≤ 3 and gloss retention checked at 60° specular angle. Chemical exposure is tested with road salt solution, dilute acid, and commercial car wash detergent; ASA is not recommended for continuous contact with aromatic solvents, esters, or ketones. Finished components are exterior mirror housings, mirror base covers, and door sash garnish moldings.

Coextruded ASA Capstock Over Rigid PVC Window Lineals

Rigid PVC window lineals coextruded with a weather-resistant ASA cap layer are specified for south-facing building elevations where white or dark-brown profiles must resist chalking and color shift. In capstock duty, WX-9951N is dried to 0.05% moisture and fed through a dedicated extruder into a dual-manifold or feedblock die; the ASA cap layer is commonly maintained at 0.25 mm to 0.40 mm over a PVC substrate of 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. Melt temperatures are mismatched by design: the PVC layer is delivered at 190°C to 205°C and the ASA layer at 220°C to 230°C, while the die body is held at 200°C to 210°C to limit degradation of the PVC compound. Interfacial adhesion is achieved by melt contact and is influenced by the acrylic processing aids and stabilizer package in the PVC substrate; no solvent-based primer is used. Corner radius at the die lips is maintained above 0.5 mm to avoid melt stagnation, and post-extrusion cooling is performed in a vacuum calibration tank with chilled water at 15°C to 20°C. Compliance is determined under EN 12608 for unplasticized PVC profiles and ISO 105-A02 for color change after weathering; exposure in ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc equipment is used to confirm that the cap layer retains a grey scale rating of 4 or better. Finished products include window lineals, soffit panels, fascia boards, and residential siding accessories.

Outdoor telecommunication enclosures and photovoltaic combiner boxes are produced in light gray or off-white molded-in color because the parts must maintain a stable appearance under roof-level solar load and must not delaminate or crack through seasonal freeze-thaw cycling. WX-9951N is dried at 80°C for 4 h and injected on machines sized for 4 kN/cm² to 5 kN/cm² of projected area; wall thickness is held between 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm. Gate locations are placed at rear bosses and internal standoffs to minimize visible weld lines on the front cover, and mold temperature is set from 60°C to 70°C to reduce internal stress near snap-fit retention features. Electrical enclosure compliance is evaluated under UL 746C for outdoor suitability and UL 94 for flammability at the minimum molded thickness; heat deflection temperature is measured per ISO 75-2/B, Vicat softening temperature per ISO 306/B50, and impact resistance per ISO 180/1A. Accelerated weathering is conducted under ISO 4892-2 with water spray; accepted moldings are inspected for surface cracking, embrittlement, and significant color change after 1000 h to 2000 h exposure. Regulatory compliance also includes RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC screening. The dominant production defect on large flat covers is sink marks above reinforcements caused by premature gate freeze; corrective action involves increasing hold pressure to 50–70 MPa, extending gate seal time, and locally raising mold surface temperature. End-use products include outdoor telecom junction boxes, base station cable distribution housings, and solar combiner box enclosures.

When Agricultural Machinery Fender Shrouds Are Molded From Weatherable ASA

Farm machinery fender shrouds and combine harvester console covers are exposed to diesel splash, hydraulic oil films, ammonium nitrate dust, and repeated pressure washing with alkaline detergents. In these large-area moldings, sequential valve gating along the longitudinal axis of the fender prevents visible flow-front hesitation marks at the transition between 3.0 mm webs and 6.0 mm bosses; injection speed is profiled so that the melt front does not pause at ribs. WX-9951N is dried to 0.05% moisture or lower, and barrel residence time is managed by screw rotation and shot size to avoid yellowing of molded-in gray when the melt temperature approaches 260°C. Chemical resistance is not universal; continuous exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones can cause environmental stress cracking, so gasket materials and lubricants must be reviewed before production approval. Weatherability is confirmed under SAE J2527 with a target ΔE of 3 or less after 2000 kJ/m²; painted-metal replacement programs generally require this color stability to be maintained without wax, clearcoat, or post-mold painting. Finished components comprise tractor fender shrouds, side console covers, combine harvester access panels, and stationary engine guard housings.

Formulating Mineral-Filled ASA Blends for Dimensional Stability

Mineral-filled ASA compounds based on WX-9951N are used when unreinforced ASA produces excessive thermal expansion or flatness variation in long exterior brackets and solar panel junction box covers. Compounding is performed on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a screw diameter of 40 mm to 65 mm and an L/D ratio of 36:1 to 44:1; talc or wollastonite is side-fed after the polymer melt seal to limit platelet fracture and reduce barrel residence time. Filler loading is normally set between 10 wt% and 20 wt%, because higher loadings degrade low-temperature impact and increase melt viscosity beyond the range of standard injection molding machines. Melt temperature at the die plate is kept from 230°C to 250°C, and the melt stream is filtered through a 100-mesh screen pack to remove agglomerates before strand pelletizing. Published data for this specific formulation configuration is limited, so tensile and impact properties should be generated on each lot using ISO 527-2:2012, ISO 180/1A, and ASTM D648-18; coefficient of linear thermal expansion is measured by ISO 11359-2 after conditioning. Finished products include solar panel junction box covers, roof flashing adapters, exterior signage mounting rails, and curtain wall attachment brackets where lower thermal movement is required.
