Application of Lotte Chemical Starex® ASA WX-9310UV

Class A grained cowl grilles and door mirror shells are injection-moulded on multi-cavity tools in which Starex® ASA WX-9310UV is metered at 100 wt% for visible grain surfaces; clean, non-pigmented plant regrind from the same lot is permitted at 0–15 wt% only in non-appearance bosses, clip towers, and back ribs. The regrind ceiling is set below 15 wt% because grained plaques exposed under SAE J2527 at 0.55 W/m²/nm @ 340 nm and 3,000 kJ/m² may exceed an OEM appearance limit of 2.0 CIELAB units ΔE when regrind is present above that level; this is a production quality threshold, not an ultimate resin degradation boundary. Drying is executed in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to residual moisture of <0.05 wt%; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, residence time is extended to 4 h because residual moisture above 0.08 wt% at melt temperatures above 255 °C generates silver streaking and deposit build-up on the screw root. Barrel zones are profiled 220–250 °C from feed to nozzle, melt temperature is maintained at 240–255 °C, and the tool is held at 50–70 °C; injection speed is programmed as a fast-slow-fast profile to suppress jetting at honeycomb grille gates. Pack pressure is held at 55–75 MPa for 6–10 s, followed by cooling time of 18–30 s for nominal walls of 2.5–3.0 mm. Terminal parts include unpainted cowl grilles, door mirror housings, rear tailgate spoiler cores, and B-pillar exterior garnishes. Compliance verification includes ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 at 0.51 W/m²/nm @ 340 nm, SAE J2527 at 0.55 W/m²/nm @ 340 nm, ASTM D638-22 tensile at 50 mm/min, ASTM D256-23 Izod notched at 23 °C and -30 °C, and ISO 1133-1:2022 for lot-to-lot melt-flow control.

What Limits Capstock Melt Bank Chaos in ASA/PVC Window Lineals?

In co-extruded window lineal production, WX-9310UV is fed as capstock at 100 wt% over a rigid PVC substrate; start-up trim and rejected lineal segments are reground and introduced only into the PVC substrate at 0–5 wt% of substrate mass, because capstock-side regrind with particle size above 800 µm disturbs the cap layer melt bank and generates visible flow lines at thin-wall corner welds. The PVC substrate is processed on a 25:1–30:1 L/D conical or parallel twin-screw extruder with metering zones at 190–200 °C, while the ASA capstock is plasticised on a 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder with barrel zones from 230 °C to 250 °C and die temperature 245–260 °C. Capstock thickness is controlled in the 0.15–0.35 mm range through die gap and puller speed; the melt bank in the co-extrusion block is kept below 5 mm roll size to prevent thermal gel specks and interlayer flow instability. Drying of WX-9310UV remains critical: drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to <0.05 wt% moisture is mandatory, because residual moisture above 0.08 wt% in the capstock causes interlayer delamination at the ASA/PVC boundary during corner weld break tests. Compliance for the lineal system includes EN 12608-1:2016 for unplasticized PVC profiles, ASTM D4726-22 for weatherable capstock composite profiles, AAMA 305 for exterior plastic profiles, and ISO 4892-2:2013 for xenon-arc retention of gloss and colour. Terminal products include window lineals, picture-frame sash covers, mullion caps, louvered shutters, and fascia trim profiles where co-extruded ASA surfaces replace post-painted PVC.

When sheet metal is replaced by ASA in an inverter heat pump cabinet, the injection-moulded side panel is produced in a sequential valve-gated tool where WX-9310UV is run at 100 wt%, with regrind permitted up to 10 wt% only from post-moulded rejected panels that have not been contaminated by compressor oil; oil-contaminated regrind lowers notched impact energy, and contaminated lots must be discarded. Drying is carried out at 80 °C for 2–4 h to <0.05 wt% moisture; if plant relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time is extended to 4 h. Barrel zones are profiled 220–250 °C, melt temperature is maintained at 235–250 °C, and the mould is held at 50–70 °C; holding pressure is set at 45–65 MPa with cooling time of 22–35 s for 3.0 mm walls. Sequential valve gating is used to move the weld line away from corner bosses; if a single drop gate is used, flow length is limited to 120:1 to avoid under-fill on louver ribs. Compliance includes UL 746C f1 for outdoor-use polymeric housings, IEC 60529 IP55 enclosure integrity, ISO 9227 neutral salt spray at 720 h, and ASTM D2244 ΔE after 2,000 h under ISO 4892-2:2013. Terminal products include compressor access panels, fan grille rings, top covers, side louvered panels, and low-condensation drain pans.

Chloramine Attack in Pool Heater Lids Is Governed by Surface Stress Cracking Index

Pool pump covers, strainer lids, and spa heat pump front housings are injection-moulded from WX-9310UV at 100 wt%; reprocessed ASA from sprues and runners is allowed at 0–10 wt% in non-wetted flanges only after the regrind passes the same notched Izod requirement at -30 °C as the virgin lot. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 2–4 h to <0.05 wt% moisture; melt temperature is kept between 240 °C and 260 °C, and mould temperature is held at 60–75 °C to reduce moulded-in stress in threaded lid regions. Sharp thread roots are replaced by buttress profiles with minimum root radius of 1.0 mm, and gate location is moved away from the thread run-out to prevent stress-cracking initiation from chloramine diffusion. Components intended for water contact require certification under NSF/ANSI 50 before commercial use; the resin alone does not constitute certification. Additional verification includes ISO 22088-4 environmental stress-cracking methods and ISO 4892-2:2013 for UV retention. Published data for this specific WX-9310UV configuration under continuous chloramine immersion at concentrations above 5 ppm and temperatures above 50 °C is limited; end-use validation is required. Terminal parts include pool pump strainer lids, filter clamp rings, spa heater enclosures, and underwater lighting bezels.

When an Outdoor EV Charging Enclosure Requires Colour Retention Under UL 746C f1 Exposure

For outdoor EV charging enclosure production, WX-9310UV is injection-moulded at 100 wt%; internal post-consumer regrind is limited to 0–5 wt% when the client’s weathering specification requires ΔE after long-term Florida-equivalent exposure below 2.0 CIELAB units, because reprocessed polymer develops conjugated discolouration sites more rapidly under 0.51 W/m²/nm @ 340 nm xenon cycles. Drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to <0.05 wt% moisture is mandatory before large-panel moulding. Melt temperature is controlled at 235–250 °C, mould temperature at 50–70 °C, and flow-front velocity is profiled at 100–180 mm/s to reduce gloss variation on visible shut lines. Gas counterpressure is optionally applied at 2–5 MPa during filling to suppress sink marks around boss pillars. Compliance includes UL 746C f1 for outdoor suitability, IEC 61851-1 enclosure impact provisions for electric vehicle charging equipment, ASTM D256-23 notched Izod at 23 °C and -30 °C, and ISO 4892-2:2013. WX-9310UV has a UL 94 classification of HB; if the charger enclosure requires UL 94 V-0, a flame-retardant grade or design-level flame barrier is required because this ASA grade should not be modified with amine-based flame-retardant packages. Terminal products include charging enclosure front panels, parking post housings, power module covers, and cable-management covers.

Agricultural irrigation controller housings and weather-shielded display enclosures are also injection-moulded from WX-9310UV at 100 wt% after drying at 80 °C to <0.05 wt% moisture, with melt temperature 235–250 °C and mould temperature 50–60 °C; relevant compliance includes IEC 60529 IP54 and ISO 4892-2:2013 after 2,000 h, and terminal parts include timer bodies, valve enclosures, and rain-shielded display bezels.
