Application of Lotte Chemical Starex® ASA WR-9300HF

Lotte Chemical Starex® ASA WR-9300HF belongs to the styrene-acrylonitrile/acrylate rubber family and is supplied as a high-flow injection grade. Unpainted black exterior mirror housings and door handle escutcheons are produced from this grade where weld-line integrity and molded-in color stability are design constraints. The acrylic ester elastomer phase replaces the polybutadiene phase used in standard ABS. The absence of unsaturated alkene sequences reduces the formation of conjugated oxidation products during UV exposure. Residual moisture is controlled below 0.05% before molding. A desiccant-bed dryer with dew point -30°C and inlet air temperature 80°C for 3 h to 4 h is required when the material has been stored in unopened polyethylene-lined containers. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, open-container floor time should be limited to 30 min. Longer exposure permits moisture uptake that appears as silver streaking and intermittent gloss shift on black surfaces. The melt volume-flow rate of the high-flow grade is verified by ISO 1133-1:2022. On production equipment, a 350-ton hydraulic injection molding machine with 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw and sliding check ring is used. Melt temperature is measured by nozzle immersion thermocouple at 235°C to 245°C. A shot size between 55% and 65% of barrel capacity is maintained to limit residence time under heat. The tool cavity is polished to SPE/SPI A-2 finish. Higher polish produces higher measured gloss but also magnifies sink marks over snap-fit bosses and mirror actuator mounting points.

For the mirror shell, nominal wall thickness is 2.0 mm to 2.4 mm, with rib thickness limited to 0.8 mm and rib height not exceeding 2.5:1 height-to-thickness ratio. Sequential hot-runner valve gating is used because simultaneous gate opening creates parallel flow fronts that merge at the central seam. A delayed second gate opening of 0.3 s shifts the knit line into the low-bending-moment corridor adjacent to the folding pivot. The high-flow grade reduces pack pressure at the gate from values typical for medium-flow ASA by approximately 10 MPa to 15 MPa. Insufficient hold pressure still causes sink at the rear boss. Mold temperature is maintained at 45°C to 55°C on both halves. Higher mold temperature improves knit-line blend at the expense of longer cycle time and increased drag on the textured cavity. Ejection temperature is kept below 80°C to prevent deformation of snap-fit tabs during plate movement. Weathering acceptance for unpainted exterior trim is frequently evaluated by SAE J2527 with a radiant exposure of 2500 kJ/m² and color difference measured by ASTM D2244. Gloss retention is measured by ISO 2813. Published OEM criteria often require ΔE ≤ 3.0 and gloss retention above 70% after accelerated exposure, but vehicle-specific limits vary. The molded black part eliminates the paint adhesion interface that is a known failure point on mirror housing edges after repeated door slam loading.

How does high-flow ASA perform in cowl vent grilles where weld-line integrity limits part stiffness?

In long cowl vent grilles and windscreen drainage covers, multiple valve gates are sequenced along the length of the part. The flow length-to-thickness ratio commonly exceeds 120:1 for a vent grille with 1.6 mm nominal wall and 850 mm overall length. WR-9300HF permits lower melt temperature than standard ASA, reducing the yellowing risk in both natural and gray compounds. Nozzle melt temperature is set to 230°C to 240°C. Temperatures above 250°C accelerate ester-group thermal degradation and produce visible beige streaking in translucent gray formulations. Gate sequencing is programmed with a 0.2 s delay between central and lateral valve pins. The delayed fill front prevents gas pockets at the final fill region near the wiper arm boss. The material’s lower viscosity reduces the pressure drop across the flow path from 120 MPa to 80 MPa at the same fill speed. This allows a cavity without excessive flash along the vent slots. Flash generation in ASA is controlled by the non-shear-closing shutoffs. A cavity land of 0.03 mm to 0.05 mm is maintained at vent slots because the lower melt viscosity can penetrate larger gaps at pack pressure.

Knit-line integrity is characterised by Charpy impact on double-gated plaques tested perpendicular to the weld line. Test procedures follow ISO 179-1:2020. Weld-line retention in ASA is generally higher after UV ageing than weather-resistant ABS because the acrylic ester phase does not contain the polybutadiene unsaturation responsible for rapid crosslinking and embrittlement. At a fill-speed-to-gate-cross-section ratio that keeps the flow-front melt temperature above 220°C, surface knit lines remain shallow and can be hidden by grain texture of VDI 24 or heavier. If gate delay exceeds 0.6 s, the frozen layer thickens and the opposing flow fronts cannot interpenetrate. The resultant surface groove is visible on the top-side ribbed louver. Hold pressure is applied for 3 s at 50 MPa to 60 MPa. Cycle time is limited by the hot-runner gate vestige. Premature cooling at the gate tip produces stringing when the valve pin retracts. The finished part is attached to the body with integral snap tabs. Tab fatigue after thermal cycling is assessed by ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture at -20°C in some OEM validation programs. Published data for WR-9300HF in this exact two-gate weld-line geometry is limited. Mold-filling simulation is required to locate the weld line at acceptable low-stiffness-loss zones.

Outdoor enclosure flatness and gasket flange sealing are more process-critical than raw impact strength in meter boxes and antenna housings. Meter enclosures and antenna housings are produced with wall thickness 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm and gasket flange width of 3.0 mm to 3.5 mm. The high-flow grade permits lower melt pressure, but the wide flat base remains prone to differential shrinkage between the ribbed inner surface and the outside wall. To reduce warpage, mold temperature is set at 55°C on the core half and 40°C on the cavity half. The temperature difference controls curvature direction but cannot eliminate shrinkage-induced sinking at the root of the main mounting boss. The boss root is cored with a diameter-to-wall-thickness ratio of 1.8:1 and connected to the side wall by zigzag ribs. The gate is placed into the bottom center, not the side wall. Center gating produces radial melt flow and reduces clamping-force requirement. It also creates circular surface orientation that has less effect on flange flatness than side gating. Pack pressure is held at 60 MPa to 70 MPa for 4 s to 6 s. The gate is a direct sprue into the bottom interior. A cold sprue break avoids visible vestige on the exterior. After ejection, the part is placed on a cooling fixture for 15 min. Unrestrained cooling between mold cycles has been observed on production lines to produce flange warp exceeding 1.5 mm over 300 mm length, sufficient to compromise the IP rating of the enclosure. The assembly is tested for impact by IEC 62262 or UL 746C in the North American market. Outdoor exposure is evaluated via ASTM D4329 and ISO 4892-2. Published data for WR-9300HF in tropical high-radiance sites is limited. The grade should be screened at the intended service dose because humidity and UV dominate hydrolytic and oxidative degradation differently.

When black molded-in color must survive high-desert ultraviolet exposure without a painted carbon black topcoat

For roof-mounted solar junction box covers, skylight end caps, and streetlight access hatch lids, black WR-9300HF is molded without paint. The black compound uses carbon black at a loading between 1.0 wt% and 2.5 wt%. Carbon black acts as a free-radical absorber and converts absorbed ultraviolet energy into heat. The surface temperature of a black panel in high-desert exposure can reach 85°C. Therefore heat deflection temperature and Vicat softening temperature are design limits. Typical ASA datasheet values measured by ISO 75-2:2013 and ISO 306:2022 place the load-deflection temperature above 85°C at 1.8 MPa and Vicat softening above 95°C. Exact grade-specific values for WR-9300HF are to be taken from the manufacturer’s published certificate of analysis. Accelerated weathering is performed by ASTM D4329 with 8 h UV at 50°C followed by 4 h condensation at 40°C. Color difference is measured by ASTM D2244 on the CIE L*a*b* scale. Long-term Florida exposure per SAE J1976 or Arizona exposure per AATCC TM16.3 may be specified. Published data for WR-9300HF in this specific high-desert configuration is limited.

Injection tooling for these parts often uses hot-runner tips with valve pins because black ASA shows gate blush more readily than gray or white. The gate tip orifice is not smaller than 1.5 mm. Smaller orifices increase shear heating and cause visible brown streaking at the gate. Melt temperature is held at 230°C to 240°C. Barrel residence time should not exceed 10 min during a hot-runner block heat or machine interruption. If the machine stops for more than 15 min, the barrel should be put into standby at 190°C and the next 3 shots discarded. These operational boundaries prevent black specks and gloss reduction caused by thermal degradation of the acrylic ester phase. The finished part is mated to a clear polycarbonate dome or glass panel with a silicone gasket. ASA demonstrates adequate outdoor stress-crack resistance when contact stress is kept below tensile yield. Contact areas subject to continuous shear from thermal expansion should be evaluated under ISO 22088-2:2006 environmental stress cracking with the intended gasket plasticizer. Published data for this specific combination with WR-9300HF is limited.

Snowmobile hood louvers, fuel vapours, and low-temperature impact

Hood panels and vent louvers on snowmobiles are injection-molded in black or body-color compounds. The high-flow grade fills large thin-wall panels with projected area above 0.5 m² at clamp force below 1000 tons in some tools. Melting at 235°C to 245°C with fill speed 30 mm/s to 40 mm/s permits complete filling before the flow front freezes. Gate positions are spaced to avoid long free-sheet flow that produces surface waviness. Low-temperature impact of the finished part is validated by ISO 179-1/1eA at -30°C and by field trial in northern operating conditions. Grade-specific values for WR-9300HF at -30°C are not widely published. Comparative screening against weather-resistant ABS is recommended because ASA retains more impact after exterior ageing than ABS but may have different as-molded yield behavior. Fuel vapor contact arises near the fuel filler neck and vent lines. ASA resists aliphatic hydrocarbon stress cracking better than high-impact polystyrene and some ABS blends. Aromatic fuel blends containing high levels of toluene or oxygenated ethanol mixtures may alter the stress-crack resistance. Continuous contact is not recommended without component-specific testing under ISO 22088-3. Process boundaries include leaving the melt cushion above 5 mm. A smaller cushion reduces pack pressure transfer to the wide panel center and produces sink at the louver ribs. Screw recovery speed is kept below 120 rpm to avoid excessive shear heating in the high-flow grade.

Tool texturing is MT 11010 or equivalent. Glossy smooth surfaces are avoided because low-temperature flexing of snowmobile panels creates fine stress whitening under tensile bending. The part is ejected warm at 60°C to 70°C and supported on a contoured cooling jig until below 50°C to prevent edge curl. Published field data for WR-9300HF in snowmobile hood configurations is limited. Accelerated UV retention per SAE J2527 and low-temperature impact per ISO 179-1 provide a screening protocol before full winter fleet evaluation.

Agricultural housing flatness is controlled by gate placement before chemical exposure is evaluated

When agricultural equipment housings require dark color stability and resistance to intermittent pesticide contact, WR-9300HF is molded in wall thicknesses of 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm. Housings for irrigation controllers, livestock monitoring nodes, and small tractor junction boxes use the grade for weather resistance and dimensional stability. Pesticides, diesel streaking, and alkaline cleaning fluids contact the outer shell. ASA does not carry chemical resistance certification for aggressive agricultural chemicals. Validation is required under ISO 22088-2:2006 with representative diluted pesticide spray, not only with water vapor. Sharp notches at gasket bosses should be radiused above 0.5 mm because stress concentration combined with dilute calcium hydroxide can promote environmental stress cracking over multiple seasons. Flatness across a housing length of 400 mm is maintained by a 2.0 mm minimum wall and by side-gate placement along the short edge. Center gating is avoided because the circular flow pattern creates anisotropic shrinkage that bows the long side. The mold is run with a differential core/cavity temperature of 15°C and water temperature set at 45°C. Ejection is carried out at 75°C or below with multi-point ejectors to prevent white stress marks at closely spaced ribs. Outdoor weathering is screened by ISO 4892-2 with conditioned water spray. Color shift is evaluated by ASTM D2244. Published data for WR-9300HF under multi-season field immersion in agricultural chemicals is limited.
