Lotte Chemical ABS SG-1000 is supplied as a pelletised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer for injection moulding of rigid enclosures, housings, and structural interior components where balanced melt flow, surface gloss, and dimensional stability are specified. The grade is positioned within the Lotte styrenic portfolio as a general-purpose injection grade with higher melt flow than high-impact ABS and lower notched Izod impact than rubber-toughened extrusion grades. Material classification follows the ISO 2580-1 designation system; melt volume-flow rate is determined under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg, and density is measured under ISO 1183-1:2019. Manufacturer-published nominal values include melt volume-flow rate of 18 cm³/10 min, density of 1.04 g/cm³, tensile yield stress of 44 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus of 2,350 MPa under ISO 178:2019, and notched Izod impact strength of 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180/1A. Colour-dependent UV stability and lot-specific additive packages require confirmation from the supplier certificate; published data for this exact configuration are batch-driven.
Manufacturer-reported nominal data place the Vicat softening temperature at 97 °C under ISO 306/B50 and heat deflection temperature at 88 °C under ISO 75-2/A. For thin-wall enclosures with nominal wall thickness below 1.5 mm, melt temperature and mould temperature are held above the values used for filled polyolefins to preserve replication of polished cavity surfaces. Gloss retention is evaluated at 60° incidence under ASTM D523-20; production lots with regenerated rubber phase above the supplier control limit show lower specular reflectance and higher haze in direct-gated sections.

Before melt processing, the granulate is dried in a closed-loop desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3 h minimum for virgin material; the supply air dew point is maintained at or below −20 °C. Residual moisture content is verified by an automatic Karl Fischer coulometer or an ISO 15512:2019 moisture analyser, with a maximum setpoint of 0.05 wt%. For storage at relative humidity above 60%, drying time is extended to 4–6 h regardless of lot age. Melt processing is performed on a general-purpose three-zone metering screw with length-to-diameter ratio from 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio from 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Injection cylinder zones are set flat to a reverse profile: feed throat 190–210 °C, compression zone 220–240 °C, metering zone 230–245 °C, nozzle 240–250 °C. Melt temperature measured by pyrometer should not exceed 260 °C for more than 5 min, otherwise surface silver streaks and yellowing increase.
Back pressure is held between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa, with screw speed from 30 rpm to 60 rpm. Cushion is maintained at 3–6 mm because excessive cushion increases residence time and creates black specks from degraded polybutadiene at the screw tip. Non-return valve clearance should not exceed 0.05 mm after cleaning; a worn valve produces shot-to-shot melt-pressure variation above 1.0 MPa and poor part weight repeatability. The barrel residence time should occupy 50–70% of shot capacity. Total residence time above 8 min at 250 °C may prematurely reduce impact strength and cause mould deposit from low-molecular-weight acrylonitrile oligomers.
In thin-wall electrical enclosures with nominal wall stock below 1.2 mm, injection velocity is set above 180 mm/s to prevent premature freeze-off; however, screw forward displacement above 240 mm/s can induce jetting and gas entrapment at the gate land. Filling time for 1.5 mm wall is kept between 0.3 s and 0.8 s. Hydraulic injection pressure at the material is typically 90–130 MPa, with hold pressure 60–80 MPa for 2–4 s per millimetre of nominal wall thickness. Mould temperature is controlled at 60–80 °C through closed-loop water manifolds; cavity surface temperature below 50 °C reduces gloss and increases internal stress near weld lines. Hot runner manifold temperature is set at 230–245 °C, with gate land diameters from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm and vent depth from 0.02 mm to 0.04 mm. Valve-gated hot drops are preferred for direct-gated housings to reduce gate blush.
Production trials on all-electric presses with 450 kN clamp force and 30 mm barrier screw have shown that regrind addition above 20 wt% without closed-loop melt-pressure compensation can shift melt cushion by 2–3 mm and lower notched Izod impact by 10–15%. Splay is observed when screw speed exceeds 80 rpm at high back pressure, particularly in lots exposed to ambient humidity. Direct-gated housings show knit-line cracking when hold pressure drops below 40 MPa or when injection speed is reduced to compensate for gas marks; the acceptable processing window is therefore narrower than for high-flow ABS grades with higher rubber content.
Chemical resistance limitations are governed by the interaction of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with polar and non-polar penetrants under external strain. Environmental stress-cracking resistance is examined by the constant-strain method under ISO 22088-3; samples exposed to vegetable oil or detergent solutions may develop microcrazes at strain levels above 0.5% in tests exceeding 24 h. SG-1000 is not specified for continuous contact with esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents. Short-term contact with ethanol-based cleaners is tolerated only when residual moulded-in stress is minimised through fill and pack control; otherwise, surface haze and gloss loss occur before the end of the cleaning cycle.
Flame classification is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm where the supplier yellow card lists the natural grade; pigmented versions require separate UL evaluation. RoHS compliance is assessed by IEC 62321-3-1:2013 for lead, IEC 62321-5:2013 for cadmium, and IEC 62321-8:2017 for phthalates; certification is additive-package dependent. SG-1000 is not formulated to meet electroplating peel strength requirements under ISO 19095-3; adhesion-promoting grades with higher polar functionality are specified when decorative chromium electroplating is to be applied.
In multi-impression tooling, SG-1000 fills with approximately 20–30% lower pressure than lower-flow general-purpose ABS grades because of its melt viscosity characteristic. Compared with high-impact ABS grades, notched Izod impact is reduced by roughly 30–40%, while Rockwell hardness is increased by approximately 5 points under ISO 2039-2. The product is therefore specified for small domestic appliance housings, electrical accessory covers, and personal care equipment enclosures where surface appearance and dimensional repeatability are dominant requirements, and where sustained impact loading is not the primary service condition. Processor evaluation should include weld-line strength testing under ISO 527-2:2012 and gloss retention under ASTM D523-20 on production-representative tools before lot qualification.
