Lotte Chemical ABS SD-0150W is a white-pigmented injection-moulding grade of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene positioned in the manufacturer’s SD general-purpose series. The resin is specified for thin-wall housings, consumer electronic enclosures, appliance trim, and small electrical enclosures where medium melt flow and consistent surface whiteness are required. Published datasheet values identify a density of 1.04 g/cm³ when tested to ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt mass-flow rate of 15 g/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load when tested to ISO 1133-1:2022. These two values position the resin as a flow-optimised general-purpose ABS rather than a high-impact or high-heat speciality grade. The white pigmentation is compounded during resin manufacture, eliminating the need for press-side colour addition and reducing lot-to-lot colour variation compared with natural ABS dry-coloured at the machine.

The values in the table are typical lot-average figures from public manufacturer documentation and are not specification limits for every production lot. The notched Izod impact of 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C places SD-0150W in the medium-impact range. The material can support thin-wall housings that require resistance to ambient assembly drops, but it is not a direct substitute for high-impact ABS where low-temperature ductility below -10 °C is required. Heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa of 87 °C defines the upper structural limit for a load-bearing geometry. Short-term surface contacts above 90 °C are not recommended at fastener bosses or snap-fit features because localised softening and stress relaxation occur as the polymer approaches Vicat softening at 96 °C.
Barrel temperatures between 200 °C and 240 °C are generally applicable for SD-0150W. The feed throat should remain cool at 30–50 °C to prevent pellet bridging. A common thermal profile from rear zone to nozzle is 200 °C, 215 °C, 225 °C, and 230 °C. The upper limit is constrained by thermal degradation of the butadiene rubber phase, which produces yellowing and volatile off-gassing. The lower limit is constrained by melt pressure loss in the runner and gate system; below 200 °C, melt viscosity rises sharply and thin-wall sections below 1 mm can exhibit short shots.
Mould temperature is set between 40 °C and 80 °C. For white parts with textured surfaces, a mould temperature of 60 °C improves flow-front coalescence and reduces weld-line visibility. Lower mould temperatures improve cycle time but increase frozen-in stress near gates. Higher mould temperatures improve stress relaxation and whiteness retention but extend cooling time and may increase part sticking if draft angles are below 0.5°.
Back pressure between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa and screw rotation speed between 50 rpm and 100 rpm are adequate for melt homogenisation. Excessive back pressure raises shear heating and can induce pigment rubbing; insufficient back pressure can cause inconsistent cushion and trapped air. Injection speed should be sufficient to fill before freeze-off but not so high that jetting occurs. For a 0.8 mm wall section, a fill time of 0.2–0.5 s is a practical starting range; the actual fill time should be derived from cavity pressure sensors or short-shot studies.
Moisture in ABS SD-0150W creates silver streaks and surface blush during moulding. The maximum acceptable residual moisture is 0.05 wt%. Desiccant dryers operating at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a supply-air dew point below -30 °C are required when stored pellets are exposed to ambient humidity above 60 % RH or when silo unloading introduces condensation. Moisture content is determined by ISO 15512:2019. Hot-air hopper dryers without desiccant beds are not sufficient for cold pellets in a high-humidity plant because they cannot reduce moisture in the pellet core to below the threshold.
Regrind use should be controlled because heat history degrades the rubber phase and shifts the melt mass-flow rate. Closed-loop regrind additions above 20 wt% may reduce impact and shift colour. A starting point for regrind is 10 wt%. Batch-to-batch variation can be monitored by measuring melt flow rate to ISO 1133-1:2022 and notched Izod to ISO 180:2023. If visible yellow shift occurs under D65 illumination, regrind content should be reduced or virgin material ratio increased.
Thin-wall housings with wall thickness from 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm are the main application geometry for SD-0150W. The resin is not a structural grade; load-bearing ribs and snap-fits require detailed mouldflow simulation and physical testing because the published data cover standard test specimens only. Weld lines in multi-gate tools are more visible in white parts and have lower fracture energy than the bulk material. The exact weld-line strength reduction for SD-0150W is not disclosed in public datasheets, so validation using part-level drop tests at 23 °C or product-specific standards is required before series production. Clamp force for single-cavity or multi-cavity tools is estimated from the projected area using 0.5–0.8 ton/cm² because excessive clamp force can close vent gaps and trap gas that creates burn marks on white surfaces.
White ABS is visually sensitive to thermal oxidation. Continuous exposure above 70 °C in still air can produce yellowing within several hundred hours, although the exact discoloration rate for SD-0150W is not listed in the manufacturer’s public data. For indoor electronics near heat sinks or power semiconductors, accelerated thermal aging under ISO 188:2023 or UL 746B is required to determine the maximum service temperature for a particular part thickness and stress state. For outdoor use, ABS is not inherently UV-stable. White SD-0150W may exhibit chalking and yellowing when exposed to UV-A and UV-B radiation over long periods unless the part is painted, co-extruded with an acrylic cap layer, or protected by a proven UV-stable coating. The material is not a direct substitute for ASA or PMMA in exterior unpainted white applications.
Compared to natural SD-series ABS, SD-0150W trades a small amount of melt fluidity for integrated whiteness. The exact effect of the pigment package on melt viscosity is not provided in public documentation; production converters should not assume identical injection pressure profiles when changing between natural and white versions of the same base resin. The white version also has higher opacity, which conceals internal ribs and weld lines less effectively than dark grey but provides better colour consistency than natural resin with masterbatch added at the machine.
Compared to Lotte Chemical high-impact ABS grades, SD-0150W has lower notched impact. High-impact ABS resins typically report 30–40 kJ/m² notched Izod at 23 °C and lower melt flow below 10 g/10 min. SD-0150W with 20 kJ/m² is easier to fill in thin-wall tools but is less suitable for parts that must survive repeated drops or low-temperature impact below -10 °C. The grade therefore competes with medium-impact rather than high-impact materials.
Compared to heat-resistant ABS or PC/ABS blends, SD-0150W has a lower heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa. Heat-resistant ABS grades can exhibit HDT above 95 °C, while PC/ABS blends can exceed 110 °C. SD-0150W is not recommended for power tool housings or automotive interior parts near heat sources where continuous service above 85 °C is specified. If heat resistance is required, a high-heat ABS or PC/ABS should be selected and tested under the same part geometry and load conditions.
| Obligation / test | Reference code | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| EU RoHS | 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 | Supplier declaration typically supports compliance for the restricted 10 substances, including phthalates; verify lot-specific declaration. |
| REACH SVHC | 1907/2006 | Compliance must be confirmed against the latest ECHA Candidate List; declaration needed for SVHC above 0.1 wt%. |
| Food-contact resin status | 21 CFR 181.32 | Applicable to acrylonitrile copolymer compositions only when end-use migration limits are met; no blanket food-contact certification is granted by the raw resin datasheet. |
| Flammability | UL 94 | Rating is HB at 1.5 mm; no V-0 or 5V claim is assigned to this grade. |
These references are not a finished-article certificate. The final article must be assessed under the applicable product-specific directive or standard, such as IEC 62321 for determination of restricted substances in electrical products or EU 10/2011 for plastic food-contact migration if the application falls within that scope.
Incoming quality-control plans for SD-0150W should include melt mass-flow rate to ISO 1133-1:2022, density to ISO 1183-1:2019, and visual pellet colour against an approved white master plaque. Viscosity shifts of more than ±5 % from the supplier’s certificate indicate regrind contamination, moisture-induced degradation, or wrong grade segregation. A change in pellet colour can signal contamination from a dark resin in the silo or conveying line, and such batches should be quarantined before moulding because white parts cannot be reworked without visible tint shift.
