Lotte Chemical ABS PD-1000 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding resin in the Starex ABS portfolio. The model suffix 1000 identifies an unfilled formulation without halogenated flame-retardant additives, mineral reinforcement, or high-heat comonomer substitution. The material is supplied as natural or precolored pellets, and the values below describe natural-grade injection-molded specimens conditioned at 23±2 °C and 50±5 % relative humidity unless otherwise stated.

The ranges in Table 1 are not simultaneous specification bands. Lot-to-lot variation in continuous-phase molecular weight and polybutadiene particle size distribution causes notched Izod impact to vary independently from melt mass-flow rate. A receiving inspection plan for impact-critical components should therefore include ISO 180 or ASTM D256 notched impact testing at 23 °C and -30 °C, rather than relying on melt flow as a sole incoming quality-control gate. Published data for this specific configuration is limited in regional technical data sheets, and the lot certificate of analysis remains the controlling document. Pellet moisture should be verified by Karl Fischer titration according to ISO 15512 when drying time is being adjusted after open storage.
Initial drying is a boundary condition. A closed-loop dehumidifying dryer with a dew point ≤ -40 °C should dry pellets at 80±5 °C for 2–4 h. If pellets are stored at plant relative humidity above 60 %, moisture uptake can raise residual water above 0.05 wt% within 8 h unless sealed hoppers are used. Moisture-related splay and silver streaking are observed when residual water exceeds 0.1 wt%. During production trials on hot-runner tools, molders sometimes misdiagnose moisture splay as gas trapping from the runner system; a Karl Fischer moisture analyzer reading is the differential check. Dryer airflow should be set to 3.7–4.0 m³/h per kg/h of material throughput to maintain dew-point stability.
The recommended melt-temperature window at the nozzle is 200–240 °C. Zone settings should be profiled so that the front zone is 5–10 °C below the nozzle and the feed throat is kept below 60 °C to avoid pellet bridging. Melt temperature above 260 °C initiates thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase, producing brown streaks and acidic volatiles; the purging material should be a general-purpose ABS or acrylic-based purging compound at 220–250 °C. For injection molding machines with clamping force from 50–800 tonnes, a shot size of 30–70 % of barrel capacity is acceptable. Larger shot percentages reduce residence time but can create melt inhomogeneity. Use a general-purpose screw with L/D 18:1–22:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1; a smear tip or ring check valve with clearance 0.05–0.10 mm prevents leakage during holding.
Mold temperature should be maintained at 40–80 °C. If mold temperature falls below 30 °C, gate freeze-off and weld-line embrittlement increase. Thin-wall sections of 1.5–2.0 mm require higher melt temperatures and injection speeds; parts with flow length/wall thickness ratio above 150:1 may need multiple gates or sequential valve gating. Injection velocity should fill the cavity in 1–2 s for nominal wall thickness of 2–3 mm. Packing pressure typically starts at 60–100 MPa hydraulic and decays over 3–6 s. Back pressure of 0.5–2.0 MPa and screw recovery speed of 30–80 rpm are adequate. Screw speeds above 80 rpm in small barrels can induce viscous heating above setpoint. For hot-runner molding, manifold and nozzle tip temperatures should be maintained at 230–245 °C and 230–250 °C, respectively. The gate diameter should not be smaller than 0.8 mm for uncolored PD-1000, because dead spots in smaller gates cause yellowing after residence times greater than 10 min. When molding colors, the masterbatch carrier should have a melt viscosity within ±10 % of the base resin to avoid color streaks in injection-molded housings.
Rheological characterization for gate pressure drop should follow ISO 11443 by capillary rheometry. A shear-rate sweep from 100 s⁻¹ to 10 000 s⁻¹ is necessary to calculate narrow-gate pressure requirements; published isothermal rheology for this specific commodity ABS configuration is limited. If the processor compounds glass fiber or antistatic additives into PD-1000, a co-rotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder with L/D 32:1–44:1 is typically used; however, post-compounding impact retention must be measured per ISO 180 because shear reorientation of polybutadiene particles is not captured by melt mass-flow rate alone.
PD-1000 carries a UL 94 rating of HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm. The grade is not designed for V-0, V-2, or 5VB classification. Halogen-free or halogenated flame-retardant ABS grades incorporate phosphate or bromine/antimony packages that raise limiting oxygen index and alter thermal degradation pathways; the absence of those packages in PD-1000 lowers plate-out on mold vents and reduces corrosion of polished tool steel during humid shutdowns. For enclosure applications requiring flame classifications under IEC 60695-11-10, a dedicated flame-retardant ABS should be specified instead of PD-1000.
Relative to high-heat ABS grades, PD-1000 does not contain α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers. High-heat ABS grades move heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa to 95–110 °C, while PD-1000 remains at 82–88 °C. Continuous load-bearing use of PD-1000 should be limited to environments below 70 °C unless creep testing under ISO 899-1 demonstrates adequate dimensional recovery. Automotive interior vertical surfaces in solar soak can exceed 85 °C; prototype validation should include heat aging according to the applicable OEM method, not HDT alone. Against high-flow ABS grades, PD-1000 has a melt mass-flow rate range of 15–25 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, which is below thin-wall grades exceeding 30 g/10 min. The difference is intentional: higher melt flow grades trade impact resistance and surface hardness for reduced cycle time. In applications where the tool has a flow length/wall thickness ratio below 120:1 and impact requirements exceed 200 J/m, PD-1000 is selected over high-flow counterparts.
For electroplating ABS, the product is deliberately formulated to be etched by chromic acid-sulfuric acid mixtures. The polybutadiene particle size distribution and SAN crosslinking density are controlled so that etch pits form consistent mechanical anchorage. PD-1000 is not sorted for this process; plate adhesion per ASTM B533 may be lower than electroplating grades. Users requiring chrome or satin-plated ABS for automotive grilles and badges should select an electroplating grade and not promote PD-1000 into plating fixtures without etch-bath qualification. Published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Manufacturer application literature identifies PD-1000 in refrigerator door caps, washing machine top plates, vacuum cleaner housings, monitor back covers, electronic switch enclosures, and automotive interior console panels. In these components, the notched Izod impact above 200 J/m at 23 °C and linear mold shrinkage of 0.4–0.7 % are used as early feasibility filters. Flexural modulus between 2.1–2.4 GPa provides moderate stiffness for snap-fits; snap-fit strain should not exceed the tensile yield strain from ISO 527-2. Finite element analysis using the measured tensile curve is necessary when the mating latch exceeds 1.5 % effective strain. Weld-line positions should be moved away from latch roots, because weld-line impact retention is commonly 30–50 % lower than parent material when measured in accordance with ISO 180.
Chemical resistance is determined by the SAN continuous phase. Aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents cause stress cracking or dissolution; these solvents should not be used for cleaning molded parts. Brief contact with ethanol or aliphatic hydrocarbons is less aggressive but should be verified by immersion testing per ISO 175. Mold-release agents containing amine compounds should be avoided in humid environments because amine migration can contribute to surface whitening and stress-crack initiation. For outdoor use, a UV-stabilized or carbon black masterbatch is required; the natural grade has no meaningful UV stabilization.
RoHS screening is generally documented under IEC 62321-5 for lead and cadmium, IEC 62321-4 for mercury, and IEC 62321-6 for polybrominated biphenyls and diphenyl ethers. Food-contact status is not automatic: although ABS base resins may be covered by FDA 21 CFR 181.32, the specific colorant and additive package must be approved for the intended food-contact application under regional requirements, including EU 10/2011 where applicable. Users should request lot-specific statements of composition for REACH SVHC determination.
Processors should not run PD-1000 above 260 °C or with barrel residence time exceeding 8 min at maximum melt temperature. Shutdown procedure should include purging with a medium-viscosity acrylic purge at 220–240 °C, and barrel temperatures should be lowered to 120–150 °C for idle periods longer than 15 min. Material from floor sweepings or unsealed gaylords should not be returned to molding because pellet contamination from nylon or acetal produces large-scale delamination in molded parts.
