Application of Lotte Advanced Materials Starex® ASA HF-5330S

High-volume automotive cowl vent grille tooling running Starex® ASA HF-5330S is configured as a 2+2 hot-runner stack mould with sequential valve gates to manage weld-line position. This part is unpainted ASA, substituting a painted PC/PBT or mineral-filled polyamide design. The resin enters the manufacturing cell as sealed octabin lots and is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h in a desiccant-bed dryer with air dew point not warmer than -35 °C. Target residual moisture before plastication is below 0.05 % by weight. Drying below target produces jetting and silver streaking at gate exits; drying above 85 °C for more than 4 h causes yellowing. The injection cylinder is profiled from feed throat to nozzle at 230 °C, 245 °C, 255 °C, 260 °C. The manifold is held at 265 °C. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle by an insertion thermocouple is 255 °C to 265 °C. Mould temperature is 60 °C to 80 °C; lower temperatures increase gloss differences on textured surfaces, higher temperatures extend cycle time beyond the part's target ejection modulus.

Wall stock is 2.5 mm nominal, ribs are capped at 0.6 of nominal wall (1.5 mm), and the grill slots are filled by low-shear gate placement at 4 positions per shot. Hold pressure is set by gate freeze tests between 35 MPa and 60 MPa; short hold produces sink around bosses, overhold raises frozen-in stress and reduces impact. The material's high melt-volume rate, characterized under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg, allows flow-length-to-wall ratios above 120:1. When moulded in black, a stabilised ASA-based masterbatch is let down at 2 wt% to 3 wt%; the exact letdown is fixed by a dispersion audit on 10 consecutively filled shots using optical microscopy. Accelerated weathering acceptance for the cowl grille uses SAE J2527 and ISO 4892-2:2013; the exposed target is set by the vehicle manufacturer. Colour shift is measured with a sphere spectrophotometer under ISO 11664-4:2008. The terminal cowl vent grille carries moulded washer nozzle bosses, snap-fit retainers, and a grain finish; post-mould shrinkage is recorded at 24 h under ISO 294-4:2018.

What Changes When Outdoor Telecom Enclosures Shift from GF-ABS to ASA HF-5330S?

Outdoor telecommunications shrouds and IoT gateway housings are being moulded from unfilled ASA HF-5330S where 20 % glass-fibre-reinforced ABS produced anisotropic warpage and outdoor colour change. The substitution changes the failure mode from fibre-related surface roughening to possible low-temperature notch sensitivity. Enclosure bodies are filled in 1.8 mm to 2.2 mm walls with 4 mm ribs; the grade's flow permits lower pack pressures than GF-ABS, but the tool must compensate for lower modulus by adding ribbing. The rib-to-wall ratio is kept at 0.5 to 0.6. The mould is a three-plate cold-runner system with tunnel gates, clamped on a 120 t hydraulic press. The screw is 35 mm diameter, with shot size at 55 % of barrel capacity to limit residence time. The material is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h.

Weatherability is assessed via UL 746C if the housing is to carry an outdoor suitability classification; the exact f1 rating must be verified on the current Lotte Advanced Materials UL Yellow Card for this specific lot. For low-voltage enclosures, the finished assembly is tested to IEC 62208:2011 for empty enclosure performance, including impact and degree of protection when a gasket is seated. Flammability is limited to the grade's unfilled ASA rating, typically UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; this compound is not a flame-retardant system. If UL 94 V-0 or UL 94 5VA is required, HF-5330S cannot meet the requirement as a neat resin and should not be selected. The terminal telecom shroud includes a UV-stabilized top cover and sealed cable-entry bosses; solar loading under ISO 4892-2:2013 is used for pre-production colour qualification. Published data for HF-5330S in fully assembled IEC 62208 enclosures is limited; the assembly fabricator retains validation responsibility.

Four-cavity injection moulding of an outdoor condensing-unit fan guard in HF-5330S uses a 150 t machine with a 40 mm screw and a hot-runner manifold fed by a single sprue. The cavity layout places four gates at the hub ring to fill 20 radial spokes of 2.2 mm nominal wall and 0.7 mm rib thickness. The resin is dried to 0.04 % moisture with 80 °C desiccant air; this target is checked by a hygrometer rather than by visual inspection because surface splay appears only after the melt has undergone partial acrylic-phase degradation. Barrel zone temperatures are 230 °C, 245 °C, 255 °C, 260 °C. The nozzle is 255 °C. Mould temperature is 50 °C to 70 °C. Fill time is 1.4 s to 1.8 s to prevent flow hesitation at the outer blade tips; hold pressure is set at 45 MPa to 55 MPa.

The fan guard is dimensionally constrained by a 3 mm to 4 mm radial clearance between the blade tip and the orifice ring. Unfilled ASA shrinkage must be compensated with gate-freeze hold; radial runout is measured after conditioning for 16 h at 23 °C and 50 % RH per ISO 291:2008. Post-mould shrinkage is tracked to ISO 294-4:2018. Regrind is limited to 15 % of dry weight because impact retention in the thin spokes decreases when reprocessed material exceeds this ratio. Chemical contact with compressor oil mist and outdoor coil-cleaning agents is evaluated by immersion in 10 % alkaline cleaner for 24 h at 23 °C; interpretation follows tensile property change under ISO 527-2:2012. The terminal product is a UV-stabilized fan guard assembled with vibration-damping posts and clips; no paint or flame-retardant coating is used.

When Battery-Powered Lawn Tool Housings Must Survive Impact at -30 °C

For battery-powered outdoor tool housings, Starex ASA HF-5330S is specified where low-temperature impact is more important than continuous heat deflection. A string trimmer motor housing has a 2.4 mm nominal wall, deep battery-tote bosses, and snap features that must remain ductile after repeated assembly. The material is dried to 0.03 % moisture in a -40 °C dew-point hopper at 80 °C for 3 h. Moulding is performed on a 130 t press with a 35 mm barrier screw; fill time is 2.0 s, then a short hold at 40 MPa to 55 MPa is used. The tool is 55 °C to 65 °C. In-mould stress is minimised by avoiding overpack at the gate; frozen stress is flagged by a 1 h anneal test at 85 °C with part growth measured.

Low-temperature impact is measured by ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy notched test at -30 °C on specimens cut from the moulded housing; if the housing wall is thinner than 3 mm, a small specimen size is used. Re-grind is capped at 20 % because repeated extrusion lowers the notched impact energy; the cap is validated by lot-to-lot Charpy dispersion. Self-colouring is done with a light-stable masterbatch at 2 wt% to 3 wt%; lower letdown shows inconsistent streaking in the battery housing walls, higher letdown disturbs screw feeding. The masterbatch carrier is ASA-based to avoid phase separation. The terminal part is a motor end-cap or fan shroud for a commercial landscaping line; compliance records include REACH SVHC and RoHS 2011/65/EU supplier declarations, plus ISO 4892-2:2013 for UV retention.

Because louvre blades for passive building ventilation are assembled without paint, Starex ASA HF-5330S is injection moulded with no protective capstock. The blade length is 600 mm, width 120 mm, and nominal wall 1.8 mm. To reduce warpage, the mould uses injection-compression travel of 0.3 mm after 90 % fill; the press is a 250 t hydraulic injection-compression machine with a 50 mm screw. The material is dried at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h. Barrel temperatures are 230 °C to 260 °C. The mould is 60 °C to 70 °C. Compression reduces moulded-in stress and improves flatness after ejection; flatness is checked on a granite surface plate with feeler gauges at 5 measuring points. Post-industrial regrind ratio is held at 0 % for exposed architectural parts; any regrind use requires xenon-arc revalidation.

Weatherability is the controlling property. South-facing exposure in a xenon-arc chamber under ISO 4892-2:2013 with daylight filters and 0.35 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm is run to a total radiant exposure set by the building envelope specification. Colour change is assessed against the grey scale under ISO 105-A02:1993; chalking is examined by adhesive tape and visual rating. The compound is not designed for continuous hot-water or potable-water contact; drainage channels in the louvre are designed to shed condensate. Terminal parts are assembled with stainless steel pins into a louvre bank; no painting is performed, which removes VOC compliance burdens in architectural finishing.

Chemical Resistance Boundaries in RV Roof Vent Frames and Access Hatches

In RV roof vent frames and access hatch surrounds, the black HF-5330S compound is specified for grained exterior covers. Grain depth is 0.08 mm to 0.12 mm. The injection mould is a single-cavity 180 t tool with a tunnel gate into a hidden boss. Processing requires a 240 °C to 260 °C melt temperature and 50 °C to 65 °C mould temperature. Drying is at 80 °C for 3 h. The frame has a wall thickness of 2.0 mm and threaded brass inserts are installed post-mould via heat staking. Hold pressure is 35 MPa to 45 MPa, because excessive pressure expands the gate area and changes the insert boss inner diameter. The insert boss diameter is held to +0.05 mm after 24 h; the material is used as a neat black compound or with 2 wt% carbon black masterbatch.

Chemical exposure on RV rooftops includes acid-rain candidates, bird droppings, silicone sealant by-products, and surfactant-based wash solutions. The frame is evaluated for tack-free surface retention after 72 h immersion in 5 % acetic acid and 5 % neutral detergent at 23 °C. Stiffness after exposure is measured under ISO 178:2019 three-point flexure. Softening temperature is characterised by ISO 306:2022 Vicat B50 to ensure screw boss stability during solar roof heating. If the part is intended for marine or shoreline use, salt-spray exposure is performed per ISO 9227:2022 with visual rating after 500 h; published data for this grade in marine-location RV parts is limited, so end-use qualification is required.
