LG Chem Ningbo Yongxing ABS HI-121H is classified as an injection-moulding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer manufactured on the Ningbo Yongxing ABS train operated by LG Chem. The material consists of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix carrying a dispersed grafted polybutadiene rubber phase. The high-impact designation is derived from a rubber-particle size distribution and grafting architecture adjusted for notched Izod energy absorption, rather than from simple rubber-content increase alone. Published supplier literature characterises the grade with a melt mass-flow rate of 23 g/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg piston load according to ISO 1133-1:2022, a tensile yield stress near 46 MPa under ASTM D638-14, a flexural modulus of approximately 2,350 MPa under ISO 178:2019, and a notched Izod impact strength of 32 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180/1A:2019. The rubber-phase grafting efficiency controls phase adhesion between the polybutadiene domains and the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix; insufficient grafting produces agglomerates that reduce weld-line elongation and fall-weight rupture energy in moulded enclosures.

The values in the table are representative lot-averaged data taken from published supplier technical documentation and are not release limits. Actual batch values vary with production lot, pigmentation, and moulding history.
Pre-drying is the first processing control. The styrene-acrylonitrile phase absorbs atmospheric water, and when storage relative humidity remains above 60 %, absorbed moisture can produce splay streaks, surface silvering, and reduced weld-line strength. The material is therefore dried in a desiccant-bed dryer with a closed-loop air supply and a dew point at or below -30 °C. A drying temperature of 80–85 °C for 3–4 hours is commonly specified, with residual moisture measured by Karl Fischer coulometry to remain below 0.02 wt% under ISO 15512:2019. Moulded parts exposed to humid plant air after drying can reabsorb sufficient surface moisture within 30–60 minutes to restore splay defects, particularly in film-gated tooling.
Melt temperature is held within 200–240 °C. Below 200 °C, viscosity rises sharply and gate freeze is accelerated; above 240 °C, the polybutadiene phase undergoes thermal-oxidative degradation that first appears as yellowing and later as notched Izod loss. Screw plasticating units with compression ratios of 2.2:1 to 2.8:1 and low-shear distributive mixing sections are acceptable. Back pressure is maintained at 5–10 bar to stabilise melt density without imposing excessive shear work. Mould temperature is normally controlled between 30 °C and 60 °C; larger thermal gradients across the cavity increase differential shrinkage and warp in flat enclosure faces. The grade should be processed with a shut-off nozzle to prevent drool and decompression-induced air entrapment.
When HI-121H is substituted for a general-purpose ABS in electronic housing applications below 1.2 mm nominal wall, the design of gate location and weld-line placement becomes the dominant risk variable. General-purpose ABS grades with lower polybutadiene rubber phase content provide higher stiffness and surface gloss but exhibit lower notched Izod values and are more prone to brittle failure at screw bosses and snap-fit geometries. HI-121H shifts the balance toward impact-modified behaviour, improving resistance to assembly damage and drop-induced corner cracking. However, the grade is not a high-flow ABS; its melt mass-flow rate in the mid-20 g/10 min range under ISO 1133-1:2022 is lower than supplier high-flow ABS grades that exceed 40 g/10 min under the same test condition. Consequently, flow-length-to-wall-thickness expectations must be adjusted. Published spiral-flow data for this specific grade are limited; when high-flow confidence is required, process validation on the actual mould is preferred.
Mechanical shock performance is typically evaluated by instrumented puncture according to ASTM D3763 or by package-level drop test protocols derived from IEC 60068-2-27. The rubber phase in HI-121H supports ductile response at room temperature, but low-temperature impact falls sharply as the polybutadiene phase approaches its glass-transition region. For field use below -20 °C, the grade requires validation; published notched Izod data at subzero temperatures for this configuration are limited. Flame rating is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm. If a UL 94 V-0 rating is required for information-technology equipment enclosures, a flame-retardant ABS or an externally coated enclosure is necessary.
In multi-cavity tools, cavity pressure for projected-area clamp-force calculations is typically assumed at 30–40 MPa. Injection speed should be set moderately fast to prevent premature freezing in thin ribs, but excessive velocity can generate shear heating that locally degrades the polybutadiene phase at the gate. Weld lines formed downstream of holes or slots retain less rupture elongation than the surrounding material, so bosses and snap-fit hooks should be positioned away from known knit-line regions.
Regulatory position of LG Chem Ningbo Yongxing ABS HI-121H is typically documented on the supplier lot certificate and supporting compliance statements. The grade is sold for industrial and consumer injection-moulding applications, including appliance housings, control panels, small electrical enclosures, and structural interior components. The table below summarises the standard compliance matrix.

Continuous outdoor UV exposure is not a recommended service condition. ABS undergoes photo-oxidative yellowing and surface embrittlement unless protected by a weathering-grade capstock, coating, or a UV-stabilised masterbatch. If outdoor durability is required, weatherable ABS or acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile alternatives should be evaluated with accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2.
LG Chem Ningbo Yongxing ABS HI-121H is differentiated from other ABS product classes primarily by its impact-modified rubber-phase balance. General-purpose ABS grades formulated for low rubber content and high surface gloss typically show higher flexural modulus and solvent resistance but lower notched Izod impact. In contrast, HI-121H maintains sufficient styrene-acrylonitrile content for processability and surface finish while retaining a tougher polybutadiene distribution. The trade-off is a flexural modulus slightly below some rigid general-purpose grades, which is the expected consequence of the dispersed rubber phase softening the matrix below its unmodified modulus.
High-flow ABS grades are distinguished from HI-121H by melt mass-flow rate. These grades are typically formulated with lower molecular-weight styrene-acrylonitrile or higher lubricant package loading to reach flow rates above 40 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022. They are preferred for large-surface-area thin-wall parts with long flow lengths, but their lower rubber content and lower melt strength reduce impact and geometry retention. HI-121H is therefore selected when the moulding contains snap grips, screw bosses, or load-bearing undercuts that require higher elongation before fracture.
Heat-resistant ABS grades use alpha-methylstyrene or maleimide-based comonomers to raise heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa. HI-121H has a published heat deflection temperature of 95 °C at 0.45 MPa under ASTM D648-18; heat-resistant grades can exceed 100 °C at 1.82 MPa. That improvement comes with higher melt viscosity, narrower processing window, and greater risk of thermal degradation. For applications involving secondary oven hardening or high-temperature interior lighting, a heat-resistant grade should be evaluated. For general appliance and enclosure service at moderate temperatures, HI-121H avoids the processing penalty of heat-resistant formulations.
Electroplating-grade ABS is formulated with a more controlled polybutadiene particle size and surface oxidation response to promote palladium/tin catalyst adsorption and subsequent electroless plating. HI-121H is not sold specifically as an electroplating substrate. Chromic acid etching conditions, colloidal activation, and electroless nickel coverage must be validated independently on this grade. Flame-retardant ABS contains brominated flame retardants and antimony synergists to achieve UL 94 V-0; those grades have higher density, lower melt stability, and a more brittle mechanical response than HI-121H. The choice between them is governed by regulatory flammability requirements rather than mechanical toughness.
In injection-moulding production, the most commonly observed failure mode is not resin deficiency but inadequate drying before processing. Moulded parts produced on twin-screw plasticating units with worn non-return valves show cushion variation that shifts shot-to-shot density and pack pressure. On production-scale machines, the grade is normally processed as supplied natural pellets; colour is introduced by pellet masterbatch at the press side. Screw recovery time should be monitored because elevated screw speed can increase shear heating and reduce viscosity without altering barrel set point. Regrind ratios are commonly held at 20–30 wt%. Higher regrind ratios increase melt-flow variability and may reduce notched Izod values by concentrating degraded rubber particles from previous thermal histories.
Mould warpage in HI-121H is best controlled by uniform mould temperature and correct gate freeze time. Premature gate freeze restricts pack pressure and increases sink marks above ribs and bosses. Prolonged packing after gate freeze does not reduce shrinkage but extends cycle time. The published mould shrinkage range of 0.4–0.7 % in the flow direction under ISO 294-4:2018 should be validated with cavity-pressure sensors and part-measurement protocols before multi-cavity tool production. The material is not recommended for continuous immersion in strong polar solvents; swelling of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase and extraction of low molecular weight additives can occur in ketone, ester, and chlorinated environments. Avoid purging with unmodified polycarbonate at high temperature unless full screw and barrel cleaning is performed, because incompatible residues can generate degraded streaking and delamination on subsequent shots.
