In diagnostic analyzer enclosure programs where the optical window is a non-implantable, non-mucosal component, LG Chem LUPOS MABS TR-558NS is processed with a residual moisture target below 0.03 wt% after desiccant drying at 80 °C for 4 h with a dew point of -30 °C to -40 °C. The polymer is an unfilled methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer; its lot-to-lot melt volume rate is verified against ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10 kg load before mould trials. For transparent bezels, the colourant addition is restricted to 0.0–0.2 wt% of a pre-dried styrenic UV-stabiliser masterbatch, and if a cool-blue tint is required, the cobalt-violet pigment level is held at 0.05–0.1 wt% because higher pigment loads raise haze measured under ASTM D1003-21. Injection is performed on a hydraulic toggle machine with clamp force calculated at 3.5 kN/cm² of projected area; barrel zones are profiled at 210/225/240/240 °C from hopper to nozzle, melt temperature is 245 °C, and the mould temperature is maintained at 50 °C. Full-round edge gates of 6 mm diameter feed the lens at the non-visible edge to prevent gate blush, and the screw cushion is held at 3–4 mm. REACH Article 33 declarations are obtained for the specific lot, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II limits are verified by XRF screening. Typical failures during scale-up are short shots at weld lines around bosses, splay from under-dried regrind, and stress whitening after press-fit insertion into metal frames. Terminal products include IVD analyser bezels, dermoscope windows, and non-load-bearing imaging console covers. The material is not to be used in implantable or long-term mucosal-contact devices unless biological evaluation according to ISO 10993-1:2018, ISO 10993-4:2017, ISO 10993-5:2009, and ISO 10993-10:2021 is completed with the specific colourant and processing heat history.
Regulatory documentation for cosmetics packaging focuses on REACH Annex XVII restrictions, particularly cadmium-bearing pigments under entry 63 and azo-colourants under entry 43, because the final compact case or fragrance cap outer shell is not a cosmetic product itself but must not transfer restricted substances to the hand under repeated contact. The grade-specific data file is checked for absence of SVHCs above 0.1 wt% per REACH Article 33 and for RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II limits. Formulation for a pearlescent lipstick mechanism cover uses 2.0–3.0 wt% of a pre-compounded mica-based masterbatch in a SAN carrier; for high-gloss clear caps, pigment loading is held below 0.3 wt% to keep haze below 2.0% on a 2 mm plaque measured per ASTM D1003-21. External lubricants are not added, because plate-out contaminates the SPI/SPE A-1 polished cavity within the first 200 shots. A sequential valve-gate hot runner with 3 drops suppresses weld lines across the hinge area. Melt temperature is set at 250 °C, mould temperature at 60 °C, and fill speed is profiled from 30 mm/s at the gate to 70 mm/s through the hinge; switch-over is by screw position with a 4 mm cushion. Hold pressure is 60 MPa, and cooling time is 18 s for a 2.5 mm nominal wall. Terminal products include compact case lids, lipstick mechanisms, fragrance cap outer shells, and clear mascara overcap lenses. Hinge live-load and snap-fit retention are evaluated after 500 open/close cycles at 23 °C and 50% RH; stress whitening at the hinge is treated as a lot-acceptance failure.
When a wireless router front panel requires a co-moulded LED light pipe with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm and a channel length above 12 mm, TR-558NS is dried at 80 °C for 3 h in a desiccant dryer and processed at the lower end of its melt-temperature range to suppress yellowing at the light-entry face. The compound is left natural or tinted with 0.5–0.8 wt% of a non-polar diffuser masterbatch composed of 20–25 wt% titanium dioxide in SAN carrier; regrind from sprues and runner systems is limited to 10 wt% when luminous transmittance through a 2 mm plaque must remain above 86% under ASTM D1003-21. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II limits for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and PBB/PBDE are verified by XRF screening, and the unfilled material carries UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm under UL 94, a classification sufficient for low-current enclosures but not for components requiring V-0. A 30 mm screw with a 22:1 L/D ratio is used with a reverse-taper nozzle; barrel zones are profiled at 200/215/225/230 °C, and injection speed at the gate is held at 50–70 mm/s. High-speed fill through the light-entry gate can cause jetting, while low-speed fill produces hesitation flow marks along the channel; a cross-shaped gate of 0.8 mm thickness and 1.5 mm width at the light-entry face balances these defects. Mould temperature is set at 60 °C, and the cavity surface is polished to SPI A-2. Terminal products include router front-panel light pipes, switch indicator lenses, IoT sensor covers, and control bezels for set-top boxes.
The threshold behaviour is nonlinear, and published data for TR-558NS-specific regrind response is limited; general MABS closed-loop studies show that haze remains below 2.0% at 10 wt% regrind on 2 mm plaques but rises once the regrind fraction exceeds 15 wt% because the polybutadiene rubber phase undergoes additional crosslinking and particle size shifts during repeated plastication cycles. Closed-loop in-house reuse of sprues and runners is not a REACH registration event, but if recovered material is transferred to another legal entity, REACH Article 33 SVHC declarations and waste classification under Directive 2008/98/EC become applicable. Regrind is sieved to 6 mm maximum particle size, and the virgin-to-regrind blend ratio is set at 85:15 for printer and label-dispenser windows. If visual inspection under a D65 light booth reveals gel particles above 0.3 mm, the regrind fraction is reduced to 10 wt%. Drying of blended feedstock at 80 °C for 3–4 h with a dew point of -30 °C is mandatory because regrind absorbs moisture faster than virgin pellets. A 25:1 L/D general-purpose screw with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 is used; barrel zone set points are 215/225/235/240 °C, back pressure is 8 bar, and screw speed is 80 rpm. Mould temperature is kept at 50 °C. Notched Izod impact is verified on end-gated specimens according to ISO 180:2023, and haze is tested according to ASTM D1003-21; if either parameter drifts beyond the lot-specific control limit, melt temperature is reduced by 5 °C before the regrind ratio is lowered. Terminal products include printer scanner windows, label-dispenser covers, and automated office equipment display filters.
Transparent pen barrels and toy magnifier lenses made from TR-558NS are processed in high-cavitation injection blow moulds where dimensional control of the gate vestige affects optical distortion. The compound is tinted with 0.1–0.2 wt% of a pelletised transparent colourant; for uncoloured lenses, no masterbatch is added because even 0.3 wt% of a poorly dispersed pigment raises haze above 2% on a 2 mm plaque under ASTM D1003-21. Toy-grade components require a migration-of-elements test according to EN 71-3:2019 for barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and tin, and mechanical testing according to ISO 8124-1:2022 if the lens is accessible to children; the supplier's REACH SVHC declaration is checked for phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Drying is at 80 °C for 3 h to 0.03 wt% residual moisture. Injection blow moulding is run with a melt temperature of 230 °C, a preform mould temperature of 40 °C, and a blow mould temperature of 15 °C with 0.8 MPa blow air. Pen barrel wall thickness is 1.2 mm; toy lens wall thickness is 2.5 mm at the optical centre and is not allowed to fall below 2.0 mm at the edge. Typical defects include gate vestige haze, blow ratio non-uniformity causing astigmatism in toy lenses, and stress whitening at the barrel threads. Terminal products include translucent pen barrels, high-clarity toy magnifier lenses, and snap-fit stationery organisers.
High-gloss washing machine control-panel surrounds are manufactured from TR-558NS only when the electrical or mechanical load does not require a V-rated material; the unfilled polymer carries UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, which is not an acceptable alternative to glow wire test requirements under IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30 for unattended appliances. If the end-use involves a current-carrying part within 3 mm of the plastic, a glow wire test at 750 °C may be required, and the material must be assessed on the actual wall thickness and colourant package; flame-retardant additives that raise UL 94 to V-0 typically reduce light transmittance by more than 5% measured under ASTM D1003-21 and introduce blooming at the mould surface. For non-current-carrying decorative surrounds, the colourant loading is held at 0.5–1.0 wt% of a blue-grey masterbatch, and external release agents are omitted to maintain grain texture on the cavity. Injection is carried out on a 150-tonne toggle clamp with a cavity pressure of 35 MPa; melt temperature is 250 °C, mould temperature 55 °C, and the cavity is textured to SPI C-1 to hide flow lines and minor scuffs. The gate is a fan edge gate of 1.2 mm thickness across the top edge of the frame, with vacuum venting at the base to prevent vent burns and splay. Holding time is 6 s, and cooling time is 20 s for a 2.5 mm wall. Terminal products include washing-machine control knob trims, panel surrounds, and refrigerator fascia frames where IEC 60335-1:2020 and IEC 60335-2-24 or IEC 60335-2-25 end-product testing are completed by the appliance manufacturer.
When a transparent MABS lens is overmoulded onto a thermoplastic elastomer seal, the process order is selected so that the TPE substrate is moulded first and the TR-558NS lens is injected second, because MABS melt at 240 °C will soften a low-hardness TPE if the sequence is reversed. The TPE substrate is selected with Shore A 60 hardness and a styrenic block-copolymer chemistry to provide mechanical interlock; adhesion is achieved by a 0.5 mm undercut and a 2° draft, not by melt bonding, because the two polymer families do not form a reliable chemical bond. The MABS lens layer is compounded with 0.4 wt% of a pre-dried UV-stabiliser masterbatch; the TPE substrate uses 5 wt% of a black masterbatch that is pre-dried at 60 °C for 2 h. Regulatory requirements include REACH SVHC declarations, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restrictions, and, for portable audio accessories, IEC 62368-1:2023 safety certification on the final assembly. Insert-overmould production runs on a two-shot rotary machine with a 180-tonne clamp force; TPE barrel zones are set at 180/190/200/210 °C and MABS zones at 220/230/235/240 °C. The mould temperature for both stages is maintained at 60 °C to balance TPE shrinkage and MABS viscosity. Short shots at the lens periphery, delamination at the interface, and compression set on the seal are the primary production defects. Terminal products include earbud lens covers, hearing-aid case windows, microphone boom housings, and portable speaker control lenses where a soft-touch seal is required.

LG Chem LUPOS MABS TR-558NS is an injection-molding grade of methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied as cylindrical pellets. The continuous phase is a methyl methacrylate-modified styrene-acrylonitrile matrix; the dispersed phase is a polybutadiene-based rubber with a particle-size distribution refined to limit loss of luminous transmittance. Refractive-index matching between the continuous phase and the rubber domains produces total luminous transmittance in the 88–90% range at 3.2 mm thickness when measured according to ISO 13468-1:2019. Haze values reported in technical literature for the LUPOS MABS family are typically below 2.0% at 3.2 mm using ISO 14782:2021. The melt volume-flow rate at 220 °C and 10 kg load is positioned in the high-flow range of 22–26 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022. Density is recorded at 1.09–1.10 g/cm³ via ISO 1183-1:2019. These values differentiate TR-558NS from lower-flow transparent MABS materials such as general-purpose LUPOS MABS TR-557, which typically exchanges higher viscosity for improved thick-section impact performance.
Mechanical response under short-term loading is normally determined on ISO multipurpose test specimens injection molded from dry pellets. Tensile stress at yield is reported near 45–50 MPa when tested according to ISO 527-2:2012 at 5 mm/min, with tensile elongation at break in the 25–35% range. Flexural modulus values are distributed around 2000–2300 MPa under ISO 178:2019. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C under ISO 180/A:2020 is typically 10–15 kJ/m² for high-flow transparent MABS; published data for this specific TR-558NS configuration is limited, and end-use qualification should be performed on the actual tool. Heat deflection temperature under 0.45 MPa load according to ISO 75-2:2020 is approximately 85–90 °C, and Vicat softening temperature under 50 N load according to ISO 306:2022 is approximately 95–100 °C. Mold shrinkage for high-flow MABS is typically 0.4–0.6% in the flow direction and 0.5–0.7% transverse, although gate design and wall-thickness variation produce measurable anisotropic differences.

Molten resin should not be processed without desiccant drying. Predrying in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 hours is required for virgin pellets, with the dew point maintained at −30 °C or lower. Hopper capacity should match shot weight and residence time; a return-air temperature drop below setpoint indicates moisture load and requires automatic regeneration of the desiccant bed. Barrel temperatures are typically set in a rising profile from rear 220 °C to nozzle 250 °C. Melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer should remain below 260 °C because MABS thermal degradation accelerates at higher temperatures and produces yellowing, silver streaking, and a styrenic odor. General-purpose screws with L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are used; high-shear mixing elements are avoided because frictional heating can exceed 260 °C above 100 rpm screw speed. Shot size should use 40–70% of barrel capacity, and melt residence time should not exceed 5–8 minutes. Mold temperature for high-gloss surfaces is maintained between 50 °C and 70 °C. Lower mold temperatures reduce cycle time but produce flow marks and reduce optical clarity in thick sections; higher mold temperatures increase cooling time and can promote ejection damage on inadequately drafted surfaces. A shut-off nozzle is recommended because the low melt viscosity can cause drooling at the sprue tip.
At wall sections below 1.5 mm, flow length is governed not by nominal melt volume-flow rate alone but by frozen-layer development and gate solidification. A high-flow MABS such as TR-558NS is selected when flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios exceed 150:1; however, published spiral-flow data for this specific formulation is limited. Injection velocity should be profiled to maintain a melt-front velocity of 100–300 mm/s across the cavity, and switch-over to holding pressure is typically set at 95–98% of actual cavity fill to avoid overpacking at the gate. Hot runner systems with externally heated manifolds and valve gate control are preferred over cold runners larger than 4 mm because large runner volume raises melt residence time and accelerates yellowing. Vent depths below 0.02 mm are insufficient for high-speed filling of transparent MABS; vent lands of 0.02–0.03 mm on the parting line reduce trapped-gas burn marks without increasing flash, provided clamp force and parting-line fit remain adequate.
Chemical resistance is determined by the methyl methacrylate-modified SAN matrix; polar solvents can induce environmental stress cracking under molded-in stress or external load. The material withstands short-term contact with aqueous surfactant solutions, dilute acids, and aliphatic hydrocarbons, but aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents should be assessed by ISO 22088-3:2018 constant-strain environmental stress-cracking testing. In personal-care packaging, formulations containing more than 5% ethanol or isopropanol may reduce critical strain; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and test coupons must be evaluated at the intended strain level and service temperature. Resistance to vegetable oil and paraffin oil is moderate; prolonged contact above 40 °C may produce surface microcrazing. Transparent polycarbonate exhibits higher resistance to boiling water but is attacked by ammonia and amine-based formulations, whereas MABS is often less sensitive to detergent solutions but lower in heat resistance. The selection decision therefore requires chemical compatibility testing on the actual formulation rather than inference from generic chemical-resistance tables.
Silver streaks, splay, and flow-front haze in transparent molded parts are usually traced to moisture or thermal degradation rather than to raw pellet optical quality. Because the grade absorbs surface moisture in humid environments, pellets should not be left in open hoppers at relative humidity above 60% for more than 30 min. Use of regrind above 20% by weight lowers melt stability and raises gel counts, which interferes with transmitted-light quality under ISO 13468-1:2019. Mold release agents based on silicone can create haze on textured surfaces; the TR-558NS suffix is commonly associated with reduced plate-out and non-silicone release behavior in LG Chem MABS grades, but the exact additive package should be confirmed from the technical datasheet. Purging between color changes is performed with a PMMA- or SAN-based purge compound, and the screw is pulled only after displacement of degraded transparent material is visually confirmed at the nozzle.
Relative to general-purpose LUPOS MABS TR-557, the TR-558NS grade is differentiated primarily by a higher melt volume-flow rate, which supports shorter injection times and lower clamp force requirements in thin-wall housings. The trade-off appears in notched impact and stress-cracking resistance; medium-flow MABS grades typically retain higher molecular weight and better thick-section toughness. Compared with transparent polycarbonate, TR-558NS processes at lower melt and mold temperatures, has lower density, and exhibits lower heat deflection temperature under load, lower notched impact strength, and lower continuous-use temperature. Compared with PMMA, MABS offers higher impact toughness and lower melt viscosity but lower surface hardness and higher haze. The choice is governed by whether the application requires PMMA-level scratch resistance, PC-level heat resistance, or MABS-level flow and room-temperature toughness.

Across appliance front panels and small kitchen appliance housings, TR-558NS is processed on injection molding machines with clamp force calculated from projected cavity area and a cavity pressure of 300–500 bar. For a multicavity cosmetic container tool with projected area of 200 cm², the calculated clamp force is 60–100 metric tons. Tool steel for transparent MABS cavities should specify high-polish surfaces with diamond finish equivalent to SPI A-1 and hardness near HRC 50–52. Documentation commonly supplied with the grade includes REACH SVHC compliance according to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, EU RoHS compliance according to Directive 2011/65/EU, and ISO 9001 lot certification. Food-contact and medical-clearance claims are not automatically available for all MABS grades and must be verified against specific regulatory references such as FDA 21 CFR 181.32 or EU 10/2011 when applicable. UL 94 classification is normally HB at the tested thickness; applications requiring V-2 or higher flame retardancy require a separate grade selection.
