    More Introduction

LG Chem Huizhou ABS HI-121H is a high-impact acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection molding grade produced at the Huizhou polymerization and compounding facility. Producer datasheet values list a nominal melt flow index of 20 g/10 min under ASTM D1238 at 220°C with a 10 kg load, notched Izod impact of 30–34 kJ/m² at 23°C under ISO 180/1A, and tensile yield stress of 42–47 MPa under ASTM D638. The unfilled product has a nominal density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ASTM D792 and a flexural modulus of 1,900–2,200 MPa under ASTM D790. These values place HI-121H in the medium-flow, high-impact segment of the ABS range, between low-flow extrusion high-impact grades and high-flow general-purpose ABS. The practical result is a balance of low-temperature ductility and injection fill pressure that is relevant for enclosures, junction boxes, appliance covers, and structural internal brackets.

At the feed throat of a closed-loop desiccant dryer, the material should be dried with a drying-air dew point at or below −30°C. A drying profile of 80–90°C for 4 h is standard for natural and colored pellets; residual moisture should remain below 0.02% before melt processing. At moisture contents above 0.05%, the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix absorbs water, causing surface splay, silver streaks, and measurable loss in notched Izod impact after molding. Regrind dried under the same conditions should not exceed 20–30 wt% unless the part is not impact-critical, because repeated thermal exposure reduces the polybutadiene phase’s capacity to arrest crack growth. A three-zone screw with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D, compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, and a positive check ring is adequate. Back pressure should be maintained between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa; higher back pressure at 250°C should be avoided because butadiene-rich domains degrade by chain scission and crosslinking in the transition zone.

Rheological fingerprint and thermal stability boundaries

Because the producer’s published datasheet for HI-121H does not provide a complete viscosity curve, process development should use a capillary rheometer or in-mold pressure studies to establish the melt-pressure signature. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but unfilled medium-flow ABS of similar melt flow index typically shows apparent viscosity near 120–180 Pa·s at 240°C and 1,000 s⁻¹. The recommended melt temperature range is 220–250°C; the lower boundary is set by poor plasticating and high injection pressure, while the upper boundary is limited by discoloration and impact regression from thermal oxidation of the polybutadiene phase. Residence time should not exceed 10 min at melt temperatures above 250°C, and production shutdowns should include purging with a medium-viscosity styrenic purge compound. Mold temperature is preferably 50–60°C for textured surfaces and 40–60°C for flat technical parts; mold temperatures below 40°C cause a solidified skin that reduces texture replication and increases weld-line notch sensitivity.

Clamp-force estimates for HI-121H in cold-runner tools with wall thickness 2.0 mm commonly fall between 3 kN/cm² and 5 kN/cm² projected area for technical enclosures; hot-runner sequential-valve-gate tools reduce this by 15–25%. In hydraulic direct-clamp machines, a 120-ton press is typically sufficient for a 300 cm² single-cavity front cover with 85–110 MPa injection pressure, while a 300-ton press may be required for a 4-cavity frame. Mold-protection pressure should be set below 2 MPa to prevent damage to textured surfaces from flash contact. If a thermoset or PVC barrel was used previously, a purging compound should be run before HI-121H to avoid cross-contamination and local degradation in the feed zone. Reciprocating screw speed should be limited to 60–100 rpm for 25 mm to 40 mm screws; high shear in the check ring can locally exceed 250°C despite a barrel setpoint of 230°C. Melt cushion should be maintained at 2–4 mm for consistent shot weight and cavity-to-cavity impact stability.

How does HI-121H differ from lower-impact ABS grades in molded enclosures?

Compared with a general-purpose ABS class of similar melt flow index, HI-121H shifts the property balance toward notched impact and elongation at the expense of flexural modulus and tensile yield. The notched Izod impact value of 30–34 kJ/m² at 23°C is roughly two times the 14–20 kJ/m² typical of medium-impact ABS; at −30°C, high-impact ABS retains a higher proportion of room-temperature impact, although the published datasheet for this specific configuration may not give a guaranteed low-temperature value. Tensile yield is reduced by approximately 3–8 MPa relative to medium-impact ABS, and flexural modulus is 200–500 MPa lower. In ribbed housings, the higher rubber content increases stress whitening before crack formation and permits deeper undercuts in snap-fit features, but it requires thicker bosses or additional gussets to achieve the same structural stiffness as a lower-rubber ABS. Against high-heat ABS, HI-121H has heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa of approximately 88–92°C versus 98–108°C for high-heat ABS; substitution is therefore limited to applications with continuous-use shell temperature below 75–80°C and no exposure to heat aging above 95°C.

Values in the table are class-level representative ranges from supplier literature and are not batch specifications. Against flame-retardant ABS, HI-121H is not designed to meet UL 94 V-0; a halogenated or phosphorus-based FR ABS may reach V-0 at 1.5 mm but typically reduces notched Izod to 10–18 kJ/m² and lowers melt stability at temperatures above 240°C. Against PC/ABS, HI-121H has lower heat deflection temperature, lower sub-zero multiaxial impact, and lower chemical stress-cracking resistance to certain hydrocarbon and ester environments; however, it provides lower density, better flow-to-impact balance in unreinforced thin-wall tools, and more uniform electroplating adhesion when a standard ABS etch system is used.

At the application specification stage, the grade should not be selected solely on the basis of room-temperature notched Izod. For snap-fit covers with a throw angle above 2 mm and nominal wall below 1.8 mm, evaluation should include multiaxial impact at −20°C and 0°C because notched Izod under ASTM D256 is a notch sensitivity test and may not correlate with a shallow lateral snap arm in cold service. The use of hot-runner dies with split manifolds is not restricted, but long hot-runner residence times above 5 min can cause the same polybutadiene discoloration observed in barrel residence.

When mold surface temperature falls below 40°C during thin-wall filling

Premature solidification in wall sections below 1.2 mm leads to jetting, surface blush, and high injection pressure. If the mold cannot be held at 50–60°C, the gate diameter should be increased by 15–20% relative to a universal ABS gate design, or the filling velocity should be profiled from 120 mm/s to 80–90 mm/s after the initial sprue and runner filling. A mold-temperature unit with control tolerance of ±2°C is recommended for cavities with texture depth below 25 µm; colder mold surfaces reproduce texture unevenly and produce visible flow marks at the transition from glossy to textured areas. Weld-line strength in such cold-mold conditions should be verified on instrumented prototypes because the minimum meltfront temperature at the weld line may fall below 180°C, below which the weld line in ABS becomes a brittle plane in tensile tests under ISO 527-2.

Drying and regulatory documentation are not interchangeable.

Compliance of HI-121H with end-market chemical restrictions is not automatic; the grade is supplied as a natural or precolored pellet depending on lot, and the final additive package determines regulatory status. The matrix below summarises the boundary conditions that should be verified with the supplier certificate of analysis before mass production.

    Compliance verification matrix for HI-121H

Food-contact regulations FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 / EU 10/2011 Not universally declared for this grade; extraction testing required for finished article
RoHS phthalate restrictions EU 2015/863 category limits Phthalate-free additive package should be specified at order placement

In outdoor, hot-moisture, or continuous-load applications, the operational boundary of this grade becomes visible as a reduction in notched impact and an increase in surface microcracking. Unstabilized unpigmented ABS should not be used in direct sunlight; if outdoor use is required, the part should be compounded with UV-stabilized pigmentation or protected by an opaque coating. Under ISO 4892-3 accelerated weathering, unpigmented ABS can lose more than 50% of initial notched impact after 1,000 h; formulated UV-stable grades retain a higher proportion, but supplier data should be obtained for the specific color. Continuous exposure to hot, humid environments above 60°C and 80% RH is not recommended because polybutadiene oxidation increases the glass-transition temperature of the rubber phase and reduces low-temperature ductility. In painted or plated parts, the grade requires a pretreatment or adhesion tie-layer compatible with ABS; cyanoacrylate and aggressive solvent-based adhesives can cause stress crazing at molded-in stress concentrations, and prototype testing under ISO 22088-2 is required for chemical compatibility.
