Application of LG Chem ASA LI980G

LG Chem ASA LI980G is an injection moulding grade of acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymer designed for high-flow filling of large, thin-wall exterior parts. The crosslinked acrylate ester rubber phase provides weatherability and thermal stability superior to butadiene-based ABS in unpainted outdoor service, but it does not confer inherent flame retardance or continuous hot-water pressure-pipe capability. Pre-drying is required at 80°C for 2–4 h in a dehumidifying hopper dryer with return-air dew point at or below −20°C to maintain residual moisture at or below 0.05%. Failure to dry produces splay, pinholing, gloss loss, and impact retention loss. The downstream applications below are separated by compliance anchor, formulation loading, production equipment, and terminal article type rather than by generic outdoor exposure; each segment imposes different limits on regrind ratio, mold temperature, masterbatch loading, and gate configuration.

What Limits High-Flow LI980G in Unpainted Mirror Housings and Cowl Vent Grilles?

Automotive exterior trim programs converting from painted ABS or ASA/PC to unpainted ASA use LI980G at 96–98 wt% with 2–4 wt% ASA-carrier color masterbatch; high-gloss black cowl vent covers require 0.8–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch plus 0.3–0.8 wt% HALS/UV absorber concentrate. For multi-cavity mirror housings, the melt is prepared in a screw with L/D ratio 20:1–22:1 and compression ratio 2.3:1–2.6:1, using a barrel profile of 240°C feed, 250°C compression, 255°C metering, and 250°C nozzle; actual melt temperature is checked at 245–255°C. Moisture above 0.05% produces silver streaks on flat high-gloss faces because residual water hydrolyzes the acrylate phase at high local shear; dehumidifying hopper dryers with return-air dew point ≤ −20°C are therefore mandatory for 2–4 h. Hot-runner tools with 8–16 cavities use sequential valve gating opened in 0.2–0.4 s intervals to shift weld lines away from load-bearing bosses; gate-freeze cavity pressure is held at 45–60 MPa, and mold temperature is controlled to 70–80°C. Terminal parts include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, A/B/C pillar covers, roof ditch moldings, and radiator grille surrounds.

Compliance anchoring in this segment is dominated by OEM weather-resistance specifications rather than generic datasheet values: SAE J2527:2017 xenon-arc exposure at 2500–3000 kJ/m² through a 3.2 mm plaque with ΔE ≤ 3.0, ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 with 3000 kJ/m², ISO 179-1/1eU:2023 Charpy unnotched impact, ISO 180:2019 notched Izod at 0°C, and ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow-rate stability after five consecutive melt cycles. Under EU ELV 2000/53/EC, the formulation must avoid lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium above the regulated thresholds; REACH 1907/2006 applies to SVHC disclosures. Production-scale bottlenecks with LI980G in this application include surface blush when mold temperature drops below 60°C, gate blush when injection speed exceeds 160 mm/s in walls below 2.5 mm, and delamination when masterbatch loading exceeds 4 wt% due to local viscosity mismatch. The moulding cell uses 1200–3000 kN clamp force; cavity-to-cavity flow imbalance above 5% is unacceptable because it shifts pack pressure and creates visible knit-line gloss differences on Class A surfaces.

Outdoor telecommunication and electric vehicle supply equipment enclosures are a second downstream segment where LI980G is processed as a single-layer injection moulded housing, not as a capstock over glass-filled substrate. The standard compounding ratio for non-flame-retarded outdoor enclosures is 96–97 wt% dried LI980G, 2–3 wt% RAL/custom color concentrate, and 0.5–1.0 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch; closed-loop regrind of sprues and rejected parts is limited to 15 wt% because higher regrind reduces gloss and increases the risk of brown streaking from repeated heat history. Processing on production cells with 1500–5000 kN clamp force uses barrel temperatures of 230°C feed, 240°C compression, 245°C metering, and 240°C nozzle, with actual melt temperature of 235–245°C; mold temperature is 70–85°C. Long flow lengths across 2.5–4.0 mm nominal walls require stepped hold pressure: 70–80 MPa for 2 s followed by 40–50 MPa for 4 s to avoid overpacking around threaded inserts and stiffening ribs. Unmodified ASA is typically UL 94 HB, so LI980G is not acceptable as the sole housing resin where UL 94 V-0, glow-wire 750°C, or energized compartment flame barriers are required; those designs require a FR PC/ASA or FR ABS/ASA alloy after compatibility screening.

Molded-in Metallic Pigment Retention in Mower Shrouds and String Trimmer Housings

Garden power equipment housings formulated with LI980G are typically loaded at 97–99 wt% resin, 1–2 wt% metallic-effect or pearlescent ASA carrier masterbatch, and 0.3–0.8 wt% UV/HALS concentrate. Metallic masterbatch additions above 2.5 wt% deepen knit-line grooving in thin ribs and reduce Charpy unnotched impact at −20°C by more than 20%; therefore the ratio is verified by melt-pressure loss across the closing check ring of the injection unit. The production process uses a screw L/D ratio 20:1–23:1 with a dynamic dispersive mixing tip, barrel temperatures of 235°C feed, 245°C compression, and 250°C metering, with mold temperature at 75–85°C to orient pigment flakes at the surface without causing delamination. Injection speed is profiled at 100–140 mm/s for the main flow path with a final 6–8 mm/s step to vent deep bosses; the slow final fill reduces gas burn at the end of ribs and improves adhesion of the molded-in texture. Terminal parts include walk-behind mower control housings, string trimmer motor cowlings, snowthrower discharge chutes, and engine shrouds.

Standards for this downstream class are ISO 4892-2:2013 for 3000 kJ/m² xenon-arc retention on metallic finishes, ASTM D638-14 for weld-line tensile retention of injection moulded plaques, ASTM D256-10(2018) for notched Izod at 0°C and −20°C, and ISO 11359-2:2022 for coefficient of linear thermal expansion where snowthrower panels must fit between −20°C and 60°C ambient. Production bottlenecks on four-cavity tools include pigment flow lines when gate lands are below 0.8 mm, and surface gloss variation when cavity temperature variation exceeds ±3°C. The tooling normally uses full-round edge gates on non-appearance sides to minimise jetting into the textured cavity; hot-runner valve gating is not used when metallic flake orientation at the gate is unacceptable. No post-moulding painting is applied; terminal surfaces are moulded-in texture.

Building products constitute a fourth downstream conversion route where LI980G is injection moulded into roof vent covers, downpipe brackets, and sheet metal flashing clips. Loading for dark grey or brown roof accessories is 96–98 wt% LI980G, 1.0–2.5 wt% custom color masterbatch, and 0.5–1.0 wt% UV/HALS masterbatch; for black roof vent components, carbon black at 1.0–2.0 wt% is used and additional UV absorber is typically omitted. The process uses a three-zone screw of 40–70 mm diameter with decompression of 3–5 mm at screw end, barrel temperatures of 225°C feed, 235°C compression, 240°C metering, and 235°C nozzle, with mold temperature of 65–75°C; melt is kept below 245°C to avoid flash on snap-fit ears with a tolerance band of ±0.08 mm. Compliance for this segment relies on ISO 4892-2:2013 at 4000 kJ/m² with ΔE ≤ 4.0, ASTM D638-14 for tensile yield of samples cut from moulded parts, ASTM D790-17 for rib flexural modulus, and ISO 179-1/1eA:2023 for impact of snap-fit features. Terminal parts include roof vent hoods, gutter adapters, downpipe connectors, fascia clips, and window hood covers.

When LI980G Is Used for Spa Jet Faces, Underwater Light Bezels and Pool Valve Covers

Spa and water-contact components made from LI980G are engineered around the acrylate rubber phase’s resistance to chlorinated or brominated water, but LI980G is not specified for pressurised potable water pipe or fittings. The compounding ratio for colored spa components is 96–99 wt% LI980G, 1–4 wt% ASA carrier masterbatch, and 0.3–1.0 wt% UV/HALS stabilizer; copper-based biocidal concentrates are not used because copper ions can accelerate degradation at hot wet surfaces. The process uses polished cavity surfaces of SPI A2 or better, mold temperature of 75–90°C, melt temperature of 235–245°C, and hold pressure of 50–60 MPa for 3–5 s to eliminate sink marks around threaded inserts and jet nozzle orifices. Sequential valve-gated hot runners are preferred because the resulting gate vestige is flush and does not disturb sealing surfaces. Processing moisture is controlled to ≤ 0.05% after 2–4 h at 80°C.

Standards applicable to this water-contact class include ISO 175:2010 for evaluation of 10 ppm active chlorine solution at 40°C for 7 days, ISO 4892-2:2013 for UV retention of gloss and color under simulated outdoor service, ISO 306:2013 Vicat B/50 method for heat resistance under stagnant spa water exposures, and ISO 180:2019 for notched Izod impact after water conditioning. Because service cracks often start from molded-in stress at gate regions or thread bosses, cavity pressure is capped at 55 MPa at gate freeze and the part is ejected only after average wall temperature drops below 85°C. Terminal products include spa jet trim rings, underwater LED bezels, skimmer lids, filtration lid covers, pool valve handles, and pump motor shrouds.

Recreational and aftermarket vehicle components are a low-volume, high-gloss downstream segment where LI980G is compounded at 96–98 wt% with 2–4 wt% color masterbatch and 10–20 wt% clean in-house regrind only when ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow shift remains within 8% of virgin material. These parts often require injection-compression moulding or oversized sprue direct gating into 2.0–3.0 mm flat panels to reduce oriented stress and birefringence; barrel temperatures are 240°C feed, 250°C compression, and 255°C metering, with mold at 70–80°C, compression stroke 1.0–2.0 mm after 90% cavity filling, and hold pressure 35–45 MPa. Cavity surfaces are polished to SPI A1 and external mold-release agents are not used because silicone migrates to the surface and causes adhesive bond failure. Standards for segment approval include ISO 4892-2:2013 for outdoor xenon exposure of cargo box skins, ASTM D638-14 for finished part tensile properties, ASTM D3763-18 for high-speed puncture of cargo panels, and ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus after 1000 h heat aging at 80°C. Production bottlenecks include differential gloss on large textured surfaces when wall-thickness variation exceeds ±0.15 mm and gate blush when injection speed exceeds 160 mm/s. Terminal part types are kayak hatch brackets, cargo box side panels, roof rack fairing housings, aftermarket grille trim, and personal watercraft console pods.
