Application of LG Chem ASA LI940C

When injection-moulded exterior mirror housing shells are produced from LG Chem ASA LI940C on 1,200–1,600 tonne hydraulic toggle presses, the dominant process conflict is not thermal degradation but shear-induced gloss striping along the flow front. The material is dried to a residual moisture limit below 0.05 wt% using a desiccant dryer with -40°C dew point and 4 h residence at 80°C; deviation above 0.07 wt% produces silver streaking at the gate. Barrel temperature profiles are set from rear to nozzle at 230/240/250/255°C, and mould surface temperature is held between 50°C and 70°C. At mould temperatures above 75°C, high-gloss black mirror shells show non-uniform gloss and ejection elongation, while below 45°C the weld line at the mirror flag boss loses ductility during broadside impact testing. Formulation is run neat at 100 wt% LI940C for first-surface exterior shells; when regrind is introduced, the ratio is limited to 80–85 wt% virgin LI940C and 15–20 wt% post-industrial ASA regrind because higher regrind levels shift black colour coordinates under SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure. Compliance verification for exterior trim includes ISO 527-2:2012 tensile properties, ISO 180:2023 notched Izod at 23°C and -30°C, ASTM D648-18 heat deflection under 1.82 MPa, and outdoor weathering according to SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2:2021 with a minimum ΔE of ≤3.0 after 3,000 kJ/m² on textured black grades. Downstream processing uses sequential valve-gate hot-runner systems to displace knit lines into non-appearance zones; gate diameters below 1.2 mm cause jetting, while injection speeds above 85 mm/s produce tiger-stripe defects that remain visible after painting. Terminal finished parts include exterior mirror housing shells, A-pillar upper covers, B-pillar appliqués, cowl grille end caps, and antenna mounting bezels.

Does LI940C Retain UL 746C f1 Outdoor Suitability in Sealed EV Charging Post Housings at 2.0 mm Wall Stock?

Accelerated weathering of LI940C for EV charging post front panels and telecom RRU shrouds is evaluated under UL 746C f1 ultraviolet and water exposure programmes, together with IEC 62196-1:2022 mechanical enclosure tests for charging inlet surroundings. The f1 assessment for ASA is thickness-sensitive; when plaque thickness is reduced from 3.0 mm to 2.0 mm, impact retention after 1,000 h xenon-arc aging is the gate criterion, and published data for this specific LI940C configuration is limited, so the injection moulder must confirm the UL file at the exact production wall. Formulation for outdoor electrical enclosures uses 97–99 wt% LI940C with 1–3 wt% masterbatch containing carbon black or light-stable pigments; fluorescent orange or yellow pigments raise warpage sensitivity because differential shrinkage aligns with flow direction. The downstream production process employs two-shot injection moulding on vertical rotary machines where the first shot forms the LI940C housing and the second shot deposits a TPE rim seal; mould temperature is maintained at 55–80°C and the first-shot barrel is profiled at 235/245/250/250°C. Weld lines around corner bosses are the critical defect; they are shifted by placing valve-gate drops no more than 120 mm from the boss edge and by sequencing fill with 0.5 s overlap. Terminal product types include outdoor AC charging station front fascia panels, charging gun holster housings, small-cell radio shroud frames, antenna enclosure clamshells, and outdoor power distribution indicator housings.

Moisture-Induced Splay and Vent Pin Fouling in Architectural Louver Blade Injection Moulding

The primary process conflict in injection-moulded architectural louver blades and gable vent frames is moisture-induced splay magnified by long flow lengths and thin wall sections. LI940C must be dried to ≤0.04 wt% moisture, and total residence time in the hopper should not exceed 4 h at 80°C; when regrind from sprues and runners is fed at 20–30 wt%, the blend must be re-dried because bulk density differences reduce desiccant airflow uniformity. Formulation for exterior architectural components is 100 wt% LI940C for first-surface visible areas, or 70–80 wt% LI940C with 20–30 wt% post-industrial ASA regrind for hidden structural ribs and mounting flanges. Downstream production uses multi-cavity cold runner tools with edge gates at 1.5–2.0 mm diameter and vent depth of 0.02–0.03 mm; vent channels below this depth fill with styrene oligomer deposits within 8,000–12,000 shots, causing gas burn and intermittent short shots at rib intersections. Mould surface temperature is maintained at 40–60°C, and hydraulic ejection is delayed until part surface temperature falls below 95°C to avoid deformation of louver blade tips. Compliance testing includes ASTM D638-14 at 50 mm/min, ASTM D790-17 flexural modulus at 2 mm/min, ASTM G154-23 UVB-313 exposure for 1,000 h, and EN 13501-1 reaction-to-fire classification for building products; ASA typically obtains Class D or Class E depending on thickness, so it is not specified for smoke-sensitive plenum environments. Terminal finished products include exterior horizontal louver blades, roof gable vent frames, soffit reveal trims, and air-conditioner louver end caps.

When LI940C Is Compounded at 25–35 wt% into Post-Industrial ABS Recyclate for Off-Highway Control Housings

Compounding LI940C into post-industrial ABS recyclate at 25–35 wt% shifts the low-temperature ductility of off-highway control panel housings without requiring a full switch to polycarbonate alloys. The preferred formulation is 30 wt% LI940C, 69 wt% dried ABS regrind from appliance covers, and 1 wt% stabilizer masterbatch containing hindered amine light stabilizer and phenolic antioxidant; exceeding 35 wt% LI940C reduces the melt flow to a point where two-cavity tools fill inconsistently, while below 25 wt% the improvement in notched Izod at -30°C is too small to justify the added material cost. The blend is compounded on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D, screw speed 300–400 rpm, barrel settings 220/230/235/240/240/235°C, and vacuum devolatilisation at -0.08 MPa to remove residual styrene monomers. Pellet moisture after compounding is brought below 0.03 wt% before injection moulding. The downstream moulding process uses 500–800 tonne toggle presses, mould temperature 50–70°C, and injection speed profiling in which the first 40% of fill is slow at 30 mm/s and the remaining fill is accelerated to 70 mm/s to prevent surface blush around gate lands. Compliance for agricultural control housings includes ISO 4892-2:2021 xenon-arc weathering at 2,500 kJ/m², ISO 180:2023 notched Izod, ISO 527-2:2012 tensile properties, and ASTM D648-18 HDT at 1.82 MPa; chemical resistance to hydraulic fluid is evaluated under ISO 175:2010, and continuous immersion in diesel at 23°C beyond 24 h is not recommended. Terminal product types include tractor fender extensions, combine control panel housings, sprayer boom electrical enclosures, and hydraulic reservoir access panels.

During gas-assisted injection moulding of leaf blower fan shrouds and string trimmer guards from LI940C, the technical problem is not polymer degradation but gas breakthrough at thin ribs when gas pressure exceeds 35 MPa. The material is dried to ≤0.05 wt% moisture and processed at melt temperatures of 235–250°C; mould temperatures are held at 40–60°C, and gas channels are designed at 6–8 mm diameter to remain functional after painting. Formulation for outdoor power equipment uses 96–98 wt% LI940C and 2–4 wt% UV-stabilised carbon black masterbatch; weight percent above 4 wt% reduces Charpy impact at -20°C because carbon black agglomerates act as stress concentrators. The downstream production process incorporates gas injection at 25–30 MPa after 70–75% volumetric fill; gas hold time is 5–10 s, and packing pressure is removed immediately after gas injection to avoid polymer backflow into the gas pin. Compliance verification is based on UL 94 HB at the production thickness, ASTM D638-14 tensile elongation at break, ASTM D256-23 Izod impact at -20°C, and ASTM G154-23 UVB-313 weathering for 1,000 h. Terminal finished parts include leaf blower fan volute housings, string trimmer debris guards, riding mower dashboard cowls, and chainsaw side cases.

Marine deck hatch trim rings and RV skylight frames demoulded from LG Chem ASA LI940C require controlled cooling because the material’s high-flow character shortens fill time but increases residual stress around thick-to-thin transitions. The recommended formulation is 92–95 wt% LI940C with 5–8 wt% light-stabilised pigment masterbatch; darker colours above 8 wt% masterbatch increase surface temperature under solar load and can push part surface temperature beyond 80°C in service, which is above the continuous-use threshold for long-term gloss retention. Processing on 350–600 tonne hydraulic presses uses a barrel profile of 230/240/245/250°C and mould temperature 50–70°C; hydraulic core pulls for hatch rim undercuts are actuated only after the part surface has cooled below 100°C to prevent tear-out. Gate placement is concentrated along the non-appearance underside of the rim, and valve-gate sequencing is spaced at 100–150 mm to avoid entrapped air at the mullion intersection. Compliance anchors include ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, ISO 180:2023 for notched Izod at 23°C, ASTM G154-23 for UVB-313 exposure, and ISO 4892-2:2021 xenon-arc weathering for marine deck hardware; published data for LI940C in continuous salt fog exposure under ISO 9227:2017 is limited, so bonded stainless steel inserts are specified rather than relying on the polymer for load-bearing attachment. Terminal product types include deck hatch trim rings, RV compartment door frames, window mullion covers, and non-structural anchor locker lids.
