Application of LG Chem ASA LI928

In exterior mirror housing production on 13,000 kN hot-runner injection platforms, paint delamination at the lens-housing interface and microcracking around snap-fit bosses are recurring field-failure modes that drive substitution toward weather-stable ASA moulding compounds. LG Chem ASA LI928 is processed in this configuration as a pre-coloured compound, eliminating the primer, basecoat, and clearcoat sequence and transferring surface specification control to the moulding stage. The granulate is pre-dried in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h until residual moisture is below 0.05 wt%; higher moisture produces silver streaking and splay on low-gloss grained surfaces. The drying-air dew point is maintained at -30 °C or lower, and hopper residence time is kept below 4 h to avoid thermal yellowing. The barrel temperature profile is set from 210 °C at the feed throat to 245 °C at the front zone, with the nozzle held at 250 °C. A mould surface temperature of 50–70 °C is maintained using pressurised water units, not oil, to balance flow length against post-mould shrinkage and to reproduce grain geometry from the cavity texture. Sequential valve-gated hot runners with a gate diameter of 1.2–1.5 mm are used for mirror housings with flow-path-to-wall-thickness ratios above 150:1; valve gates are delayed by 0.3–0.6 s between drops to prevent flow-front collision and visible weld lines on the class-A surface. For cowl vent grilles with long flow paths, injection speed is profiled with initial fill at 60–80 mm/s screw speed, then ramped to 100–120 mm/s after gate passage. Weathering acceptance is performed according to SAE J2527 using a xenon arc chamber with a black standard temperature of 70 °C, relative humidity of 50 %, and 0.55 W/m² at 340 nm. After 2,000 h, the pass criterion is typically ΔE ≤ 2.0 and no surface microcracking at 20× magnification. Mechanical release from the tool requires draft angles of at least 1.5° on textured ribs; lower draft angles increase ejection friction and create stress whitening at the snap-fit root. Tensile strength retention after weathering is normally specified above 85 % of original measured under ISO 527-2, while notched Charpy impact is assessed under ISO 179-1/1eA at both 23 °C and -30 °C. Terminal parts include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, and lower B-pillar appliqués, all moulded without paint.

What Limits Capstock Thickness Across a Rigid PVC Window Profile Extrusion?

In coextruded window lineal production, LI928 is let down as a weather-resistant cap layer over a rigid PVC substrate using a dedicated satellite extruder positioned at the feedblock. The capstock extruder is commonly a 45 mm single-screw machine with 25:1 L/D and a barrier screw, running at 190–215 °C from feed to metering zone, while the main PVC extruder runs at 170–190 °C to stay below the dehydrochlorination threshold. Pre-drying of LI928 at 80 °C for 3 h to below 0.05 wt% moisture is mandatory because even slight moisture in the capstock causes interfacial bubbles that appear only after the profile enters the calibration tank. Screw speed on the capstock extruder is held at 30–50 rpm, and melt pressure at the feedblock is stabilised within ± 1 % by a gear pump to prevent pulsation in layer distribution. The cap layer is held at 0.3–0.7 mm on exposed faces; above 0.8 mm, the differential thermal contraction between the amorphous ASA skin and the rigid PVC core generates shear stress at the interface during freeze-off, producing intermittent delamination in the calibration sleeve. Melt viscosity matching at the feedblock is maintained by adjusting capstock melt temperature rather than changing layer ratio; the apparent viscosity ratio between LI928 and PVC should remain near 0.9:1 at the coextrusion shear rate, otherwise flow instability appears as wave-like surface defects parallel to the extrusion direction. Vacuum calibration with water at 15–25 °C is used, but the first calibration block is run dry on the capstock side to prevent rapid skin solidification from locking in surface gloss variation. Weathering of the finished lineal is assessed under EN 513 or ISO 105-A02 protocols; typical architectural specifications require grey scale change no worse than 4-5 after 3,000 h of xenon arc exposure. The finished units are used as window outer frames, door sills, and roofline cladding, where the capstock must retain colour and impact resistance without an applied paint film.

Outdoor furniture armrests, slat connectors, and foot caps are injection moulded from LI928 at a melt temperature of 230 °C and a tool temperature of 60 °C. The moulding cycle is optimised not for maximum gloss but for uniform texture reproduction; polished cavities are avoided because specular reflection highlights flow hesitation lines. Pre-drying conditions remain unchanged at 80 °C for 3–4 h. Holding pressure is set at 50–70 % of the peak injection pressure and held for 8–12 s to compensate for the amorphous melt’s relatively high volumetric shrinkage. For colour retention, outdoor furniture composed of ASA is tested to ISO 4892-2 with a black standard temperature of 65 °C and 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm. The typical acceptance criterion is ΔE ≤ 2.5 after 1,500 h; published LI928-specific data for longer outdoor furniture exposure is limited, so commercial acceptance often relies on matched-exposure panels supplied with the moulded lot. The terminal components are assembled without additional painting or film lamination, and the main operational boundary is the use of white or black masterbatch at letdowns above 4 wt%, which can reduce notched Charpy impact due to masterbatch carrier inclusion.

When the Same Grade Migrates from Cosmetic Trim to Electrical Enclosure Load Paths

If LI928 is shifted from decorative trim into outdoor electrical enclosure load paths, the design review must separate impact performance from flammability classification. The compound does not carry a published UL 94 V-0 claim for thin wall sections; its use is therefore limited to enclosures where the governing specification permits HB or where the electrical safety standard does not require flame-retardant polymer at the relevant wall thickness. For empty outdoor enclosures tested under IEC 62208:2011, dimensional stability after weathering and resistance to mechanical impact are evaluated before IP ingress protection is confirmed. Moulding thick-walled junction boxes of 3–5 mm from LI928 requires a lower melt temperature of 220–235 °C and a tool temperature of 40–60 °C; higher melt temperature increases cycle time without improving knit-line strength at cable entry apertures. The screw back pressure is kept at 4–8 bar to avoid excessive shear heating in the metering zone, and the shot volume should not exceed 65 % of barrel capacity for consistent residence-time distribution. Weld lines are reinforced with local wall thickness increases of 0.3–0.5 mm around the bosses, because mechanical loading of cable glands creates tensile stress across the knit line. Toolmakers apply a linear mould shrinkage of 0.4–0.7 % based on ISO 294-4 measured on a 60×60×2 mm plaque, with separate core and cavity adjustments for ribs and bosses. Weathering qualification uses ISO 4892-2 at 0.51 W/m² and 65 °C black standard exposure, but electrical clearance and creepage distances remain governed by IEC 60664-1, not by the polymer weatherability data. The terminal articles are outdoor small-cell enclosures, meter covers, and access panels, with the strict boundary that any application requiring glow-wire ignition above 750 °C must be revalidated because published LI928-specific glow-wire data is limited.

Spa Skirting, Pump Shrouds, and Long-Term Hypochlorous Acid Ageing

In above-ground spa cabinets and pump shrouds, LI928 is exposed to simultaneous UV radiation, elevated humidity, and intermittent splashing with chlorinated water. Pre-drying follows the standard 80 °C for 3–4 h schedule; residual moisture below 0.05 wt% is critical because wet granulate in thick-section panels produces internal voids that reduce burst resistance at tapped brass insert bosses. Moulding uses a melt temperature of 235–245 °C and a tool temperature of 55–70 °C; the higher tool temperature is selected for low stress through the insert-bearing bosses, and the mould is textured to SPI grade A-2 rather than polished, to mask minor flow marks on large flat panels. Chemical resistance to free chlorine is assessed by immersion in 50 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution at 40 °C under ISO 175:2010, with acceptance criteria tied to a mass change not exceeding 1.0 % and a tensile strength retention above 85 %. Published LI928-specific long-term chlorinated water immersion data is limited; components should be qualified as splash-resistant rather than continuously immersed, and any direct contact with trichloroisocyanuric acid tablet feeders is outside the recommended validation envelope. The main processing bottleneck is insert moulding of brass fittings: if the insert temperature is below 100 °C, local cooling produces a frozen skin that later cracks under thread-forming torque after ageing. Insert temperature is held at 130–150 °C and the boss outside diameter is kept at least 2× the insert diameter to reduce hoop stress. Terminal articles include spa skirt panels, equipment access covers, and pump shrouds, where the absence of a paint film avoids coating failure at screw fasteners after repeated thermal cycling from 5 °C to 50 °C.

In agricultural sprayer shrouds and off-road telemetry enclosures, weathering is accompanied by intermittent diesel fuel splash, detergent washing, and mechanical impact at sub-zero temperatures. LI928 is dried to below 0.05 wt% moisture and injected at a melt temperature of 225–240 °C with a mould temperature of 40–60 °C, producing wall sections of 2.5–4.0 mm. On 11,000 kN toggle-clamp machines, the gate land length should be kept below 1.0 mm to avoid premature freeze-off in cold-runner tools, particularly for multi-cavity tools with more than four drops. Impact resistance is measured under ISO 6603-2 at -20 °C using a striker velocity of 4.4 m/s; acceptance values vary by equipment producer, and no LI928-specific public value is available. Weathering for agricultural components is tested under ISO 4892-2 with water spray, but field exposure includes chemical contact that xenon testing does not simulate; diesel splash compatibility is checked by immersion under ISO 175 for 72 h at 23 °C followed by tensile testing. The compound is processed without internal lubricant additions above 0.5 wt% because excess additive migrates to the surface and impairs adhesive bonding to foam sealing gaskets. Terminal parts include sprayer side shrouds, ECU covers, and fender extensions, all mounted without painting and retained by stainless steel fasteners at torque values determined by boss pull-out testing rather than by generic resin data.
