The substitution...
Where a high-flow weatherable ASA is specified for exterior mirror housings, LG Chem ASA LI923P is processed as a pre-coloured shell, normally at wall stock between 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm. The material is run in desiccant dryers set to 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h, with a supply dew point not higher than -40 °C; residual moisture is held below 0.05 wt% and checked by ISO 15512. Moisture above that limit hydrolyses the SAN phase in the barrel, producing surface splay on the class-A outer shell. A four-zone barrel profile of 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C and 240 °C with nozzle at 235 °C is used with screw back pressure of 0.6 MPa to 0.8 MPa and screw speed of 60 rpm to 80 rpm. The mould is held at 50 °C to 70 °C, with differential temperature across the fixed and moving halves kept within 3 °C. For a four-cavity hot-runner tool with valve-gated drops, injection speed is set at 100 mm/s to 140 mm/s so that the flow front passes the mirror motor boss without hesitation. Slower speeds produce visible weld lines around the lens aperture and boss array; speeds above 160 mm/s raise melt temperature by shear heating and can shift colour in pre-coloured shells. Switch-over from injection to hold occurs at 96 % to 98 % of cavity fill, and holding pressure is maintained at 55 MPa to 65 MPa for 4 s to 6 s before decay. Tensile stress-strain data used for gate pressure calculations are determined on ISO 294-1 plaques and tested according to DIN EN ISO 527-2 at 5 mm/min.
The weld line orientation is moderated by moving the gate away from the boss centreline; production tools are normally simulated in Moldflow to place the meeting angle above 135°, which reduces notch sensitivity in the base resin. End-use validation follows the OEM specification, usually a heat soak at 90 °C for 1 h followed by low-temperature impact at -30 °C after 16 h conditioning; published data for LI923P in a specific mirror housing tool is limited, so process capability must be confirmed on the production mould. The main incompatibility observed on moulding lines is the use of external mould-release sprays containing PDMS, which migrate into the SAN surface and cause subsequent adhesion failure of two-part acrylic primers. Solvent wiping agents containing acetone or toluene are avoided because they craze the styrenic surface; isopropanol is used for light cleaning. The finished mirror housing, cowl vent grille or wheel arch trim retains colour in exterior exposure when tested according to ISO 4892-2 or SAE J2527, but the exact colour shift value must be read from the pigment masterbatch lot card rather than from unpigmented resin data.
For large outdoor electrical enclosures with wall thickness of 3.0 mm and gate diameters of 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm, the gate-seal time is the controlling cooling limit. When LI923P is processed at melt temperature 235 °C to 245 °C and mould temperature 55 °C to 65 °C, the gate land length should be 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm; if the gate freezes before the holding pressure decays, the cavity near the sprue is isolated and a sink mark forms on the external face. Injection moulding simulation is used to set holding time at 1.5 times the predicted gate freeze time, typically 8 s to 12 s for a 2.2 mm hot-runner gate. Once gate freeze is confirmed, cooling time for a 500 mm × 400 mm enclosure door can be set at 22 s to 30 s, with ejection temperature below 80 °C. Premature ejection generates warpage because the amorphous SAN-rich skin has cooled while the core remains above its heat deflection range; this is a practical failure mode on single-stage injection machines with insufficient clamp force, especially when tool deflection exceeds 0.05 mm. The flatness of the enclosure door is checked after 24 h at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % relative humidity using ISO 1101; a tolerance of 1.5 mm over 400 mm is common for outdoor cabinets, but the exact value is set by the end-product standard, not by the resin.
Electrical enclosure suppliers also specify LI923P because high-flow ASA eliminates a secondary painting operation and retains dimensional stability in direct sun. The material is not a substitute for engineering thermoplastics in high-moisture internal live parts; it is used for the enclosure body, front cover and hinge reinforcement ribbing. Where a gasketed IP65 enclosure is required, sealing surfaces are designed with a convex rib of 2.0 mm height and a groove of 2.5 mm depth; the silicone or EPDM gasket is specified separately because ASA does not provide adhesion to low-durometer silicones. Processors should note that the UV stabiliser package in LI923P is factory determined; recompounding with high-let-down flame retardants or recycled ABS streams alters the UL 746C outdoor rating. The supplier technical centre should confirm the final grade formulation if more than 5 wt% regrind is used, because regrind carries shorter SAN chains after multiple heat histories and lowers notched impact at -30 °C. Published lot-specific data for a flame-retarded version of LI923P is limited; LI923P is normally used as a base weatherable grade without V-0 additives.
`Need maybe "V-0" not bold. It is standard class maybe fine. Could bold? Avoid. "UL 746C" bold. Good.Need maybe "IP65" in table and text maybe bold maybe okay.Table with caption. Need maybe use `Grass trimmer and backpack blower housings subject the polymer to simultaneous ultraviolet exposure, engine-oil mist and vibration loads transmitted from a two-stroke or brushless motor. LI923P is injection moulded at wall thickness 2.2 mm to 2.8 mm with a hot-runner system, after pre-drying at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h. The melt temperature is set at 240 °C to 250 °C because high-flow ASA grades lose impact strength when the melt is extended above 260 °C due to SAN degradation. The mould is maintained at 50 °C to 60 °C. Screw back pressure is 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa. For textile or foam-backed anti-vibration interfaces, the ASA shell is not overmoulded with TPE unless the TPE grade is tested for adhesion to styrenic substrate; a two-shot process requires a substrate temperature above 70 °C at the point of TPE injection. In terms of additive loading, a black housing is produced with 0.8 wt% to 1.2 wt% carbon black masterbatch; this pigment concentration improves ultraviolet opacity but can depress melt flow. The masterbatch carrier must be SAN-compatible; polyolefin carrier masterbatches create delamination streaks in thin bosses.
Outdoor power equipment manufacturers evaluate weathering by ISO 4892-2 using a xenon arc with daylight filters and 0.35 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm; acceptance is typically no surface cracking and Δb below 3.0 after 1,500 kJ/m². However, the exact Δb limit for a specific colour is end-product driven. The terminal components are brushcutter engine covers, blower housings and rear handle shells. Incompatibilities include continuous immersion in alkylate petrol, which softens ASA at temperatures above 40 °C; petrol splash contact is acceptable but fuel tanks or fuel pump flanges are outside the design envelope. The use of recycled ABS regrind above 10 wt% also accelerates UV chalking and is normally excluded from the regrind stream for brands that validate to ISO 4892-2 outdoor intervals.
One-piece patio chair shells moulded in LI923P require a flow length from a central gate to the arms above 600 mm, which eliminates low-flow ASA grades and drives melt temperature to 245 °C. Wall thickness is held at 2.8 mm to 3.2 mm, and the tool is water-heated to 50 °C with a temperature variation across the cavity of less than 2 °C. A gas-assisted injection sequence is used when the shell has hollow armrests: after 95 % volumetric fill, nitrogen at 15 MPa to 25 MPa is introduced through gas pins located in the armrest, forcing the molten core into the remaining cavity and reducing sink depth on the visible surface. The gas delay should be 0.5 s to 1.0 s; shorter delay causes gas breakthrough, longer delay fails to penetrate the thickened rim. Without gas assist, the central gate feeding a monobloc chair shell produces a visible knit line in the rear stretcher when two opposing flow fronts meet; processors using direct sprue gates should increase mould temperature to 65 °C and reduce injection speed to 60 mm/s to maintain a meeting angle above 120°. Melt-volume flow rate is confirmed per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg before starting a gas-assisted campaign; lot-to-lot variation outside the authorised range changes the gas penetration pattern.
Weathering validation on outdoor furniture shells is normally performed with ISO 4892-2 cycle 1, using 60 W/m² irradiance at 300 nm to 400 nm; colour change ΔE is measured to ISO 7724-3. The acceptance threshold is set by the furniture brand; unpigmented ASA data cannot be substituted for a finished colour masterbatch. Impact strength after weathering is assessed by drop impact on the complete shell, not by a notched coupon, because the shell's curvature and ribbing modify the stress field. LI923P supplies the base shell, but the terminal product includes a chair shell, tabletop or backrest insert, often post-fixed with stainless steel screws into brass inserts; the insert boss should have an outer diameter at least 2.5 times the insert diameter to prevent hoop stress cracking at 0 °C. Failure to dry the moulding compound below 0.05 wt% moisture causes silver streaks along the flow line from the central gate; this is more visible on dark brown and black outdoor furniture colours. Incompatibility with low-molecular-weight silicone oil applied as a mould maintenance agent is also observed; the oil migrates to the surface and can reduce paint adhesion if the shell is later decorated.
`Need maybe "cycle 1" maybe okay.Need maybe "lot-to-lot variation outside authorised range" okay.Need maybe "ISO 1133-1:2022" bold. Good.Segment 5:`In tropical and coastal HVAC installations, the substitution of painted steel by injection-moulded ASA front panels occurs when corrosion at cut edges and colour fade of powder-coated louvres drive a change to weathering-grade thermoplastics. LI923P is used for louvre panels, discharge grilles and service valve covers with wall thickness from 2.3 mm to 3.0 mm. The tool requires multiple valve-gated hot-runner nozzles because the louvre openings split the flow front into separate ribbons; a gate spacing of 150 mm to 200 mm prevents weld lines from crossing the visible front face. The projected area of a full front panel for a 5 kW outdoor unit can reach 0.8 m², so the clamp force is specified at 1,200 t to 1,500 t. Melt temperature is held at 235 °C to 245 °C, and the mould is cooled to 55 °C. The most demanding processing point is the louvre tip: if injection speed is above 120 mm/s, the tip fills before the root and creates jetting streaks; if speed is below 80 mm/s, hesitation marks form at the trailing edge. The process is therefore run with a profiled injection velocity, starting at 100 mm/s and dropping to 70 mm/s when the melt front reaches 70 % of the flow length.
Weathering stability is evaluated by ISO 4892-2 and, where the unit is sold into the North American market, UL 746C f1; the finished panel must retain mechanical function after 3,000 h of xenon exposure in the chosen colour. Hail impact is reproduced by firing 25 mm ice balls at 23 m/s at the panel centre and louvre edges; the acceptance is no visible crack after 5 impacts. This test is end-product specific and cannot be replaced by a notched Izod value. One limitation is that LI923P is not a replacement for glass-filled polyamide in compressor shrouds or base pans where continuous heat exceeds 80 °C; it is limited to the outer housing and louvre assembly. Adhesive tape attachment of insulation is not recommended on ASA surfaces unless flame treatment or atmospheric plasma treatment is applied immediately before bonding, because low surface energy inhibits wetting of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Impact strength after weathering is assessed by drop impact on the complete shell, not by a notched coupon, because the shell curvature and ribbing modify the stress field. The shift from painted steel to injection-moulded ASA front panels in tropical and coastal HVAC installations occurs when corrosion at cut edges and colour fade of powder-coated louvres drive a change to weathering-grade thermoplastics. The projected area of a full front panel for a 5 kW outdoor unit can reach 0.8 m², so the clamp force is specified at 1200 t to 1500 t. Weathering stability is evaluated by ISO 4892-2 and, where the unit is sold into the North American market, UL 746C f1; the finished panel must retain mechanical function after 3000 h of xenon exposure in the chosen colour. Adhesive tape attachment of insulation is not recommended on ASA surfaces unless flame treatment or atmospheric plasma treatment is applied immediately before bonding, because low surface energy inhibits wetting of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives.`.
