Follow the manufacturer’s SDS, local regulations, and good housekeeping practices to prevent spills or environmental release. |
| Shelf Life | LG Chem ASA LI913 has a shelf life of 24 months when stored cool, dry, and in unopened packaging. |
On 120-ton hydraulic injection molding machines equipped with 24:1 L/D general-purpose barrier screws, LG Chem ASA LI913 is predried to 0.012% residual moisture in a desiccant dryer set at 80°C for 2–4 h when producing exterior mirror housings. The grade’s datasheet melt flow rate of 20 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1 permits filling of 2.2–2.5 mm nominal wall sections with rib-to-wall ratios not exceeding 0.6. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 220°C at the feed throat to 250–260°C at the nozzle, while mold temperatures are held at 60–80°C on hardened P20 steel cavities. Injection velocity is set in the medium-high range to fill the mirror-cap perimeter before the flow front cools below the no-flow temperature; packing pressure of 50–70 MPa is maintained for 4–6 s per mm of wall thickness. In production tooling, vent depths of 0.02–0.03 mm at the last-filled bosses prevent trapped-gas burn marks at the mirror-glass actuator mounting sockets. Because ASA LI913 contains an acrylic ester elastomer, unpainted exterior mirror housings retain gloss under ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure without the primer adhesion failure modes associated with mineral-filled polypropylene. The shrink rate is typically 0.4–0.6% in the flow direction and 0.5–0.7% across flow, so movable cores for the mirror pivot bore are adjusted after first article dimensional audit using a coordinate measuring machine referencing ISO 105-A02 grey scale for color change. Process technicians record melt residence time at temperatures above 260°C; residence beyond 3 min produces an increase in yellowing due to acrylic ester degradation.
Splay in humid production shops appears as silver streaking at the gate when regrind containing more than 20% by weight of previously dried material is reintroduced through an open hopper. The streaking is not corrected by increased melt temperature alone; the hopper throat must be purged with dry air and the dryer dew point held at -40°C or lower. Mechanical fastening bosses around the pivot bore require a minimum outer diameter of 2× the self-tapping screw nominal diameter. If the boss outer diameter is reduced below this ratio, assembly torque above 1.2 N·m splits the boss after thermal cycling. Thermal cycling tests on finished mirror housings are performed from -40°C to 90°C for 100 cycles under ISO 16750-4. The screw boss and snap-fit tower retain torque without cracking only when the radius at the boss root is at least 0.5 mm. If the radius falls below 0.3 mm, notched impact energy at -20°C is insufficient and the tower fails during warm-to-cold thermal shock. Ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz with a 0.4 mm energy director is preferred for locating tabs; shear joint geometry produces a weld strength of 14 MPa, while butt joints on textured surfaces fall below 8 MPa.
Where a central sprue feeds an open-grille radiator surround, flow fronts recombine at rib intersections and around tow-hook apertures. The resulting weld lines are the lowest-energy zones in the component. In a 2.0 mm nominal wall grille molded from LI913, the melt flow rate of 20 g/10 min keeps pressure drop below 18 MPa across a flow length of 350 mm only when the nozzle temperature is held between 250°C and 255°C. Mold temperature must not fall below 50°C; at 40°C mold surface temperature, Charpy notched impact strength at the weld line drops below 8 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA, compared with an unwelded reference of 15 kJ/m² at 23°C. This weld-line sensitivity is driven by the orientation of the acrylic ester rubber phase at the melt front interface. Tooling used on production lines inserts cold-slug wells and overflow tabs after the last filling point; for grille apertures with length-to-thickness ratios above 50:1, sequential valve gating is preferred over direct side gates.
For parking sensor apertures and clip towers, core-pin diameters below 2.0 mm require reduced injection speed and raised mold temperature to 70°C to avoid jetting. A comparative DOE on a 180-ton electric toggle press showed that part mass variance exceeded 0.15% when hold pressure was below 45 MPa, leading to sink marks on Class A surfaces adjacent to ribs. Weighing every shot at the press on a 0.01 g resolution balance provides early detection of check valve leakage before dimensional drift appears. Published data for this exact grade configuration is limited; the following representative starting conditions for unfilled high-flow ASA must be validated on production tooling.
| Wall thickness (mm) | Nozzle melt temperature (°C) | Cavity surface temperature (°C) | Holding pressure (MPa) | Packing time (s) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.8 | 255–260 | 70–80 | 60–75 | 8–12 |
| 2.5 | 250–255 | 55–70 | 50–65 | 12–18 |
| 3.5 | 240–250 | 45–60 | 40–55 | 18–25 |
For outdoor electrical enclosures certified under IEC 60529 for water ingress, the use of LI913 addresses ultraviolet stability but does not alter flammability classification. Unfilled ASA LI913 carries UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm wall thickness; enclosures requiring V-0 or 5VA must be molded in a flame-retardant grade, not modified by dry-blending a flame-retardant masterbatch. The material supplier’s regulatory data sheet indicates compliance with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH without the use of halogenated flame retardants, but an HB rating means the resin cannot be used in photovoltaic combiner boxes or mains-voltage disconnect enclosures where the end-product standard specifies IEC 60695-11-10 V-0 through walls.
Molding practice for UV-stable outdoor enclosures differs from indoor ABS in gate placement and venting. Housings with 3.0 mm side walls and a 2.5 mm rear bulkhead are injected from a central sub-gate into the rear bulkhead to prevent visible gate blush on the front face. Holding pressure is set to 45–55 MPa; at lower pressure, the rear bulkhead shrinks 0.6–0.8% and the gasket groove loses its 0.3 mm interference fit. The mold is heated to 55°C and cycled at 45 s to prevent sink marks around brass inserts. Insert preheating to 80°C is mandatory; cold inserts below 60°C create hoop stress fractures after the first outdoor thermal cycle from -20°C to 60°C.
The table below lists the qualification test matrix transferred from the end-use specification into incoming resin control.
| Qualification parameter | Standard or test method | Material-dependent baseline | Production qualifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melt flow rate | ISO 1133-1 | 20 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg | Incoming resin lot |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2 | 48 MPa | Dry as molded |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178 | 2,300 MPa | At 23°C |
| Notched Charpy impact | ISO 179-1/1eA | 15 kJ/m² at 23°C | Not UV-aged |
| Flammability | UL 94 | HB at 1.5 mm | Not V-0 certified |
| Xenon arc weathering | ISO 4892-2 | ΔE and gloss retention per end-use specification | Approved color concentrate only |
Weathering results are color-concentrate dependent. ISO 4892-2 method A aging with a daylight filter does not produce a single pass value for every shade; light grey and beige enclosure colors must be tested separately with the specific pigment concentrate and melt stabilizer package. A xenon-arc campaign should include gloss retention at 60° geometry, not only ΔE, because surface micro-checking can appear before a color shift. The LI913 acrylic ester phase delays embrittlement but does not eliminate gloss loss on dark brown or black cabinet lids at 3,000 h under high irradiance. Regrind ratios for outdoor enclosures are limited to 15% by weight unless the regrind is first-pass spruce separated before blending; higher ratios reduce xenon-arc gloss retention because the acrylic ester phase is partially crosslinked during the first molding pass, detectable as a broadening of the rubber-phase tan δ peak in dynamic mechanical analysis.
Molded from LI913 at 2.5–3.0 mm wall thickness, cordless string-trimmer motor housings require gate placement at non-cosmetic rib intersections because the unpainted surface exposes flow marks that would be hidden on a painted ABS component. The tool is a 2-plate cold-runner mold on a 350-ton hydraulic press; the runner system is naturally balanced across 4 cavities with a total shot weight of 1.8 kg. Drying is maintained at 80°C for 2 h and monitored at the hopper inlet, not at the dryer outlet, because moisture pick-up in the feed throat above 0.02% generates gas burn at the end-of-fill. The material is not used as a single structural housing around the motor; a separate glass-filled polypropylene gear case carries the bearing loads. This separation avoids long-term creep in ASA around the motor bearing pocket, where continuous service above 60°C under 0.45 MPa load would exceed the practical creep limit.
Bosses for self-tapping screws in this application have a nominal hole diameter of 2.5 mm for a 3.0 mm screw; screw pull-out force exceeds 250 N only if the boss outer diameter is 7.0 mm and the hole depth is 6.0 mm. Reducing the boss diameter to 6.0 mm while maintaining 2.5 mm hole ID causes the boss to split during power-tool assembly when torque exceeds 1.2 N·m. Chemical resistance to sodium hypochlorite cleaners is acceptable under ISO 175 for 24 h immersion at 23°C, but continuous immersion in gasoline or xylene-based solvents is outside the validated window. Incidental fuel splash must be tested with the actual ethanol-blended fuel at 10% ethanol because E10 blends soften the acrylic ester phase faster than straight hydrocarbon test fluids.
Roof vent bases molded in dark grey and black ASA LI913 accumulate solar heat loads above 80°C on asphalt shingle surfaces during summer peak irradiance of 1000 W/m². The heat deflection temperature of LI913 at 1.8 MPa is 88°C under ISO 75-2; the 1.8 MPa value is not an absolute service ceiling because the actual mechanical load on a vent base is below 0.45 MPa. Long-term creep resistance limits continuous use to approximately 60–70°C when clamping screws impose sustained compression. A 400 mm diameter base with a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 80–100 × 10-6 K-1 under ISO 11359-2 expands by 0.32–0.40 mm per 10 K; if the mounting flanges are not slotted, thermal expansion against galvanized steel flashing buckles the part and lifts the shingle seal.
Injection tooling for high-volume roof vents uses a hot runner system with 2 valve gates set 180° apart. The gates are positioned away from the central vent opening to avoid a radial weld line that would act as a crack initiation site under wind-induced flutter. Mold temperature is maintained at 70°C and cooling time is increased to 22 s to reduce frozen-in orientation; a mold temperature of 40°C produces post-mold distortion within 48 h of installation on a dark roof. Gate freeze time at 2.5 mm wall is approximately 8 s; holding pressure is maintained 0.5 s beyond the frost time to prevent backflow. Incoming resin lots are qualified by differential scanning calorimetry for the acrylic ester phase transition, not only by melt flow rate, because a shift in the rubber-phase gel content changes impact retention at -20°C without altering flow.
When a painted ABS cowl-top grille is converted to in-mold textured ASA LI913, the elimination of paint film changes the acoustic and dimensional response of the part. The textured surface is not a sacrificial paint layer; surface defects such as gate blush, weld lines, and splay are directly visible. For a 650 cm² projected area cowl grille with 2.5 mm wall, filling pressure at the nozzle is below 80 MPa when the melt temperature is 250°C and the mold is held at 60°C. Sequential valve gating with 5 drops is used, with valve delays of 0.5–1.0 s to prevent flow-front collision along the centerline. Gate freeze at 2.5 mm wall occurs near 8 s; hold time is set to 8.5 s to avoid gate suck-back and surface blemishes.
Texturing in the tool is specified as VDI 24 or finer, with the mold texture depth certified by a profilometer before steel hardening. A textured surface of this depth reduces the effective gloss to 1.2–1.5 gloss units at 60° and masks minor sink but not knit lines. Weld lines at the wiper arm clearance slot are relocated by shifting the gate sequence; if the weld line remains at the slot root, notched impact at -20°C drops below 4 kJ/m² and the slot edge cracks during wiper stall torque spikes. The LI913 conversion is not suitable for electroplating or vacuum metallizing; ASA does not provide the same adhesion morphology as electroplatable ABS. In-mold texture withstands 2,000 h of ISO 4892-2 method A exposure with less than 2 ΔE units of color shift for dark grey, provided the color concentrate contains 2.0% carbon black by weight and the molded part is not post-treated with wax-based release agents.
