Application of LG Chem ASA LI912

Automotive exterior mirror housings moulded from LG Chem ASA LI912 require a desiccant-dried feedstock with residual moisture below 0.02% before barrel residence, as moisture above this threshold hydrolyses the acrylic ester phase during plasticating and produces silver streaks on high-gloss cavity surfaces. Drying is conducted in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of at least -30°C and an inlet air temperature of 80°C for 2 h to 4 h; hopper residence after drying should not exceed 30 min without a heated feed throat. Barrel temperature profile from rear to nozzle is set in the range 210°C to 250°C, with melt temperature measured by an immersion pyrometer maintained between 230°C and 250°C. Mould temperature is held at 60°C to 80°C to improve replication of the mirror cover grained or polished surface; lower temperatures increase gloss variation and reduce knit-line strength at the mirror pivot boss. Injection speed is profiled to fill the shell before a frozen layer exceeds 0.1 mm; on a 1200 t clamp injection moulding machine, peak injection pressure typically falls between 60 MPa and 100 MPa depending on gate location and flow length. Hot runner systems with sequential valve gates are used for two-cavity family tools, with valve gate opening delay adjusted to prevent gas traps at the peripheral snap-fit edge. Packing pressure is held at 60% to 80% of peak injection pressure for 6 s to 12 s per mm of nominal wall; sink marks at the mirror boss are controlled by local boss wall reduction to 40% to 60% of the nominal wall. Post-moulding, painted housings require a cleaning sequence with aqueous neutral detergent to remove low-molecular-weight additive bloom; adhesion of two-component acrylic topcoats is assessed by cross-cut ISO 2409 or ISO 16276-2 with pass criteria defined by OEM paint specifications. Unpainted black mirror housings are qualified by exterior automotive weathering standards, with part-level testing conducted after mounting on full vehicle road-load fixtures.

What Drives Colour Shift in Unpainted Outdoor Enclosures?

Outdoor roof-mounted antenna housings and street-level network enclosures rely on the acrylic ester rubber phase in ASA to suppress photo-oxidative chalking that causes unacceptable ΔE shift in ABS. Accelerated weathering is performed according to ISO 4892-2 with xenon-arc exposure, black-standard temperature 65°C, and a 102 min dry / 18 min water spray cycle; colour change is measured to ASTM D2244 using a CIELAB 10° observer under D65 illumination. For enclosures rated for 10 years outdoor installation, UV absorber additions in colour masterbatch are controlled to 0.3 wt% to 0.8 wt% of final compound, and hindered amine light stabilizer additions to 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%. Overdosing beyond these ranges can cause plate-out on mould vents and odour at the melt front during injection. Injection moulding tools for enclosure bases use wall thicknesses of 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm, with ribs at 50% to 70% of nominal wall and snap-fit undercuts limited to 0.6 mm interference for removable covers. North American outdoor electrical boxes are qualified under UL 746C for UV exposure, water exposure and flammability; the UL Yellow Card for a specific LG Chem ASA LI912 production lot and colorant package must be checked before approving tooling. Laser marking of enclosure interiors is performed with a 1064 nm fibre laser at 20 W to 30 W power; laser additives can reduce dielectric strength measured by IEC 60243-1, so creepage and clearance distances in IEC 62368-1 or IEC 62109-1 must be validated on marked parts. Batch-to-batch variation in black level is controlled by melt-state spectrophotometric verification against a master plaque retained from the initial tool trial.

Spa and Pool Component Weatherability Requirements

Pump lids, filter housings and jet flange covers exposed to chlorinated water and outdoor UV are moulded from LG Chem ASA LI912 class compounds because the terpolymer combines acrylic ester impact modification with low water pickup. Long-term immersion performance is screened by ISO 175 and ASTM D543 for mass change and tensile property retention after 7 days at 60°C in 3 mg/L free chlorine solution; results are compared against dry control specimens tested to ISO 527-2. Surface gloss retention after cycling between 40°C water and -20°C air is assessed by ISO 2813 at 60° geometry. Moulded parts in this segment use coarse spiral or involute flow paths with wall thicknesses above 3.0 mm to reduce jetting, and gate locations are placed at the lower hidden surface of pump lids to prevent visible gate blush. For ultrasonic welding of filter housing halves, an energy director with a 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm apex height and included angle of 90° is designed into the parting line; welding amplitude is set to 30 µm to 50 µm at 20 kHz, with collapse distance held to 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm. Post-weld burst strength is tested hydrostatically to 1.5× maximum service pressure, with failure required in the parent material rather than the weld line. Contact with potable water systems additionally requires NSF/ANSI 61 extraction testing; LI912-specific certification must be confirmed for the exact formulation and colourant package used in serial production.

When Thin-Wall Cowl Vents Replace Painted ABS

Under low-cost exterior cowl vent programmes, unpainted ASA is selected as a direct replacement for painted ABS because the moulded-in colour eliminates the paint line and associated volatile organic compound emissions. The flow length for a 1.8 mm nominal wall cowl vent ribbed grille cannot exceed the material-specific spiral flow length at 240°C melt temperature and 80°C mould temperature; published data for LG Chem ASA LI912 in spiral flow configuration is limited, so tool trials must verify fill with a short-shot study at 95% fill volume before final gate sizing. Venting at the end of the rib fills is cut to 0.02 mm depth and 3 mm width; insufficient venting leads to diesel-effect marks at the rib tips and local burn deposits on the cavity steel. The cowl vent is designed with nominal draft angles of 1° per 0.025 mm texture depth, and the parting line is moved away from the visible top surface to avoid flash on the textured show face. Moulding is carried out with a fast injection profile of 80 mm/s to 150 mm/s screw forward velocity, followed by a holding pressure time of 8 s to 12 s for a 600 mm long grille. After moulding, dimensional stability is checked according to ISO 291 conditioning at 23°C and 50% RH for 48 h; measurements are taken with contact or optical CMM using datum fixtures that replicate vehicle mounting points. Weathering performance is validated by SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2, with gloss retention and ΔE requirements detailed by individual automotive OEM material specifications.

Lawn and garden equipment housings such as string trimmer motor clamshells and ride-on mower control consoles are exposed to petrol splashes, grass juice and direct sunlight. Dimensional tolerance of a two-shell clamshell is controlled by post-mould shrinkage measurement to ISO 294-4; for unfilled ASA, mould shrinkage is commonly in the range 0.4% to 0.7% depending on wall thickness and gate orientation. Bosses for self-tapping screws use a hole diameter equal to 0.8× screw nominal diameter and boss wall thickness 0.5× nominal part wall, with a minimum radius at the boss base of 0.25× the nominal wall. Gasoline resistance is evaluated by ASTM D543 for 24 h immersion at 23°C; if continuous fuel contact is expected, the design must isolate fuel lines with elastomeric grommets because ASA is not recommended for continuous immersion in aggressive fuel blends. Low-temperature notched impact is tested to ISO 180/1A at -30°C; gate locations are placed away from high-stress corner radii to reduce brittle failure. Mould temperature of 40°C to 60°C is used to balance cycle time against visual appearance of the outer shell.

For wall-mounted and pedestal EV charging stations, outdoor charging connector housings and user interface shells use ASA for the external shell where the part must remain dimensionally stable at 70°C to 80°C surface temperature from direct solar loading. The design must avoid dark colours with an L* value below 30 because solar absorption raises surface temperature beyond the continuous-use temperature class of standard unfilled ASA. Electrical safety testing includes glow wire at 850°C per IEC 60695-2-11 and comparative tracking index measurement per IEC 60112; the CTI value for a specific LI912 colourant batch is required before fixing creepage distances on the connector shell. Sealing interfaces are overmoulded with a TPE of Shore A hardness 50 to 70; chemical bonding between ASA and TPE is only reliable with styrenic TPEs after plasma or corona surface activation. Insert-moulded brass contacts require preheating to 80°C to 120°C to reduce differential thermal contraction; the tool insert pockets are designed with 0.05 mm clearance to prevent flashing during injection. Outdoor verification is conducted by ISO 4892-3 UV-A fluorescent exposure; if the housing is load-bearing in a wall-mounted charger, creep is tested under constant load at 60°C according to ISO 899-2.
