    More Introduction

LG Chem ABS SZ-0150 is an acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene injection-moulding grade supplied as cylindrical pellets for melt processing on general-purpose injection-moulding machines. The polymer is manufactured by continuous bulk polymerisation, producing a grafted polybutadiene rubber phase dispersed in a rigid styrene–acrylonitrile matrix. This two-phase morphology provides the characteristic ABS balance between melt processability and notched impact resistance. Nominal density is 1.04 g/cm³ when tested in accordance with ISO 1183-1. Melt mass-flow rate is reported by the supplier as 15 g/10 min at 220°C under 10.0 kg load using ISO 1133-1. The grade is therefore placed in the medium-flow segment for thin-wall components, where wall thickness is commonly between 1.0 mm and 2.5 mm and where high-impact ABS grades may require excessive screw-tip pressure.

Table 1 reports representative values from injection-moulded plaques prepared to ISO 294-1 and conditioned for 24 h at 23°C and 50% RH. These figures are typical datasheet values, not minimum lot-release limits. Production lot variation in rubber particle size distribution, graft ratio, and SAN molecular weight can shift notched impact, flexural modulus, and melt flow by a few percentage points; incoming material should therefore be released against the lot certificate of analysis and, where safety-critical, tested to ISO 180/1A at the design temperature.

What Processing Restriction Is Imposed by Moisture Absorption?

Because the SAN phase and pellet surface can pick up atmospheric moisture during storage, SZ-0150 must be dried before melt processing. Pellets stored in unsealed silos or open bags at relative humidity above 60% can exceed the recommended moisture content of 0.02%. Excess moisture vaporises in the plasticating section and produces splay on the part surface, weakens weld lines, and can cause irregular shot weight on hot-runner tools with small gate diameters. Desiccant-wheel hopper dryers are specified at 80°C for 2 h to 4 h under standard conditions. The drying air dew point should be at least −30°C, and in high-humidity environments above 80% RH dwell time should be extended to 4 h to 6 h.

Drying is not only a surface conditioning step. Moisture in the feed throat increases local gas pressure in the compression zone and can promote polymer degradation because the barrel temperature is higher than the boiling point of water. On production lines with central vacuum-bed dryers, a dew point of −40°C is preferred because hopper residence time often exceeds 6 h and the material can re-absorb moisture during transfer.

Production equipment used to establish the SZ-0150 processing window on a 1200 kN clamp force line typically includes a 25 mm general-purpose screw with a 20:1 L/D ratio and a reverse-cut non-return valve. Under these conditions, barrel set-points from hopper to nozzle are commonly 200°C, 210°C, 220°C, and 230°C. Screw recovery time and peak holding pressure are tracked to detect batch-to-batch viscosity drift. A reduction in recovery time at constant screw speed and back pressure may indicate either a higher-flow lot or an unstable barrel control loop.

Mould temperature is held between 40°C and 60°C for surface gloss and knit-line strength. Lower mould temperatures shorten cycle time but reduce surface replication and notch resistance at weld lines. Back pressure is set at 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa, and screw speed is limited to 120 rpm to prevent shear-induced melt-temperature rise. Holding pressure should be validated by gate-freeze weight studies rather than fixed timer settings; the hold profile is maintained until part weight plateaus.

Flow simulation packages require accurate PVT and viscosity data. The supplied grade datasheet does not include a full Cross-WLF viscosity curve; instead, a capillary rheometer should be used to generate shear viscosity data at 220°C, 230°C, and 240°C for injection-pressure prediction. Published data for SZ-0150 under 1000 s⁻¹ and 10 000 s⁻¹ is limited. Mould-filling simulation should therefore be calibrated with short-shot studies on the production tool before design validation.

When Melt Temperature Exceeds 250°C, the Rubber Phase Undergoes Thermal Scission

Despite the medium-flow designation, the processing window has an upper boundary. At melt temperatures above 250°C, the polybutadiene rubber phase undergoes thermo-oxidative scission and gel formation. The visual indicator is a shift from natural white to yellow; the mechanical consequence is a measurable loss of notched impact and an increase in brittle fracture at knit lines. Residence time above 6 min at 250°C generates black specks, gloss haze, and potential deposits on the screw surface. In hot-runner systems, manifold temperature should be maintained at 220°C to 230°C, and gate shut-off duration should be short enough to prevent material stagnation. Purging with a general-purpose styrenic purging resin is recommended when changing from a PC/ABS or PPO/PS blend to SZ-0150, because residual high-temperature polymer can degrade the ABS rubber phase.

Differential Flow–Impact Position Within LG Chem ABS Grades

Within the LG Chem ABS portfolio, SZ-0150 is positioned between high-impact HI-121H and high-flow HF-380. Published supplier data for HI-121H list a melt flow near 11 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg and higher notched Izod at 23°C. HF-380 is specified at a higher melt flow, usually near 38 g/10 min, with lower notched impact. SZ-0150 reduces screw-tip pressure relative to HI-121H while retaining higher impact resistance than HF-380. The flow improvement is achieved without a proportional loss in tensile strength because the SAN molecular weight distribution is adjusted rather than simply lowering overall molecular weight. Published data for low-temperature impact at −30°C for this specific grade is limited; qualification for low-temperature drop impact on finished parts is required.

Compared with LG Chem MP-211, a plating-grade ABS, SZ-0150 is not specified for maximum electroplate adhesion. The rubber particle size distribution and etched surface topography are different, so critical bright-metal parts should be prototyped with a plating-grade resin. Published quantitative peel-strength differences between SZ-0150 and MP-211 are limited.

Components converted from SZ-0150 include vacuum cleaner housings, small appliance control panels, electrical enclosures, office-machine bezels, and automotive interior trim where UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm is sufficient. The grade is not a flame-retardant formulation. Applications requiring V-2 or better should select an LG Chem AF-series flame-retardant ABS or a PC/ABS grade. Unpigmented ABS undergoes photo-oxidation and chalking during outdoor exposure; painted, metallised, or UV-stabilised systems are therefore necessary for exterior automotive parts. Notch sensitivity increases at wall thickness below 1.2 mm, so sharp internal corners should be radiused to at least 0.5 mm in tool design. For UV-exposed parts, accelerated weathering should be validated by ASTM G154 cycle 1 or ISO 4892-2 method A, but published data for SZ-0150 under these specific cycles is limited.

Secondary Processing Is Governed by Solvent Stress-Crack Resistance and Surface Preparation

Solvent wipe operations must exclude ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons because these fluids plasticise the SAN phase and promote environmental stress cracking. Aliphatic hydrocarbon cleaners are preferred for degreasing. For painting and adhesive bonding, corona or plasma treatment is used to raise wetting tension above 40 mN/m. If electroplating is considered, the part surface must be etched in a chromic acid bath; however, published plating adhesion data for SZ-0150 is limited, and plating-grade ABS alternatives are recommended for critical bright-metal components. Ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz requires a tongue-and-groove joint design and a peak-to-peak amplitude above 30 µm to achieve weld strength above 70% of the base resin tensile stress.

Regulatory declarations for SZ-0150 are maintained under EU REACH 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended by EU 2015/863. Table 2 summarises the compliance matrix normally documented in the supplier’s regulatory certificate. The product is not supplied with a food-contact statement; converters must verify any food-contact compliance against EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR before use.

    RequirementStandard or regulationDeclared status
Heavy metals and brominated flame retardantsRoHS 2011/65/EU + EU 2015/863Compliant to supplier’s declaration
Substances of very high concernREACH 1907/2006No SVHC above 0.1% w/w
Flame ratingUL 94HB at 1.5 mm

Because environmental stress-crack resistance is reduced by annealing near the glass transition, machined prototypes should be stress-relieved at 60°C for 2 h only after all solvent contact has ceased. Moulded parts should not be stacked hot above 50°C immediately after ejection, because the low surface hardness at demoulding temperature permits surface bruising.
