LG Chem ABS SD-0150 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding compound supplied as cylindrical pellets. In the data-block system of ISO 2580-2:2004, the grade is designated as a general-purpose ABS material with medium impact strength. Lot-release properties recorded under ISO methods include a density of 1.04 g/cm³ when measured according to ISO 1183-1:2019, a melt flow rate of 15 g/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg load when determined according to ISO 1133-1:2022, and a tensile yield stress of 46 MPa tested at 50 mm/min under ISO 527-2:2012. The base resin is normally offered in natural and pre-coloured pellet form, with moisture content below 0.03 wt% in sealed polyethylene-lined bags. In the manufacturer’s product hierarchy, SD-0150 occupies the medium-flow injection-moulding band. The polybutadiene rubber phase content is lower than that of high-impact extrusion grades, which increases melt flow and flexural modulus while reducing notched Izod impact. This trade-off is the central selection criterion for thin-wall components where high-impact grades cannot fill long flow paths at realistic injection pressures.
In its natural unpigmented form, the grade is designed for dry-blend colouring with styrenic masterbatches; the use of olefinic carrier masterbatches is not recommended because the incompatible carrier can create delamination at the part surface. The pellets should be handled in closed conveying systems wherever the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% for more than 8 h. Before melt processing, moisture content must be verified by a dew-point or Karl Fischer method. Uncontrolled moisture above 0.08 wt% produces silver streaking and surface splay on moulded parts, particularly in polished or grained cavities.
Removal of surface moisture is required before melt processing. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, pellets should be dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should be maintained at 220–250 °C. Typical barrel temperature profiles run from 180–200 °C in the rear zone, 210–230 °C in the middle zone, and 220–240 °C at the front zone; nozzle temperature is held at 230 ± 5 °C for parts with a wall thickness of 2.0 mm. Mould temperature should be 40–60 °C for general parts and 60–80 °C for high-gloss or low-stress parts. On production-scale reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with screw L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1, back pressure should be kept at 0.5–1.0 MPa and screw speed at 40–80 rpm to avoid excessive shear heating. Injection speed should be profiled so that the melt front velocity remains below 300 mm/s in unvented cores; gas traps at the end of fill are observed when the flow front exceeds 400 mm/s in polished cavities. Hold pressure is typically 60–70% of peak injection pressure for 4–8 s depending on gate size and wall thickness.
Hot-runner valve-gate systems show a measurable gate-blush threshold when the shear rate in the gate exceeds 120,000 s⁻¹. In a production trial with a 1.0 mm tunnel gate and a 1600 kN hydraulic clamp machine, gate blush was eliminated only after reducing the injection velocity from 110 mm/s to 70 mm/s; this raised fill time from 0.9 s to 1.4 s and reduced peak cavity pressure from 58 MPa to 44 MPa. The corresponding part mass standard deviation across a 32-cavity hot-runner tool was 0.14 g. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; tool-specific process validation remains necessary. If hot-runner temperature zones exceed 240 °C, the grade releases volatile butadiene-derived decomposition products, generating gate blush and streaking. Residence time in the barrel should be kept below 15 min at 230 °C to limit toluene-insoluble gel formation and yellowing associated with oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase.
The distinction is primarily rheological and toughness-related. SD-0150 is formulated for lower melt viscosity and moderate stiffness. Comparative data across typical LG Chem ABS product categories show that SD-0150 has a notched Izod impact of 22 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180:2023, a Vicat softening temperature of 95 °C under ISO 306:2022 B50 method, and a melt flow rate of 15 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022. High-impact ABS grades generally exhibit notched Izod values of 30–40 kJ/m² but melt flow rates near 5–10 g/10 min. Heat-resistant ABS grades can provide Vicat values above 105 °C but require higher melt temperatures and exhibit lower flow, increasing moulded-in stress. SD-0150 therefore shifts the balance toward thin-wall fill and dimensional stability, while sacrificing low-temperature ductility relative to the high-impact grades. The property trade-off is also visible in flexural modulus: SD-0150 shows a value of 2400 MPa under ISO 178:2019, whereas high-impact grades with higher rubber content commonly fall below 2100 MPa.

Electrical enclosure housings with nominal wall thickness of 2.0 mm and flow length of 180 mm have been moulded at 230 °C melt temperature and 50 °C mould temperature. On a 2000 kN servo-hydraulic injection moulding machine with screw diameter 50 mm and L/D ratio 22:1, complete filling occurred at peak injection pressure 72 MPa; shot-to-shot part mass variation remained below 0.18 g over 500 cycles. Screw-recovery time was 9.2 s at a back pressure of 0.6 MPa and screw speed 60 rpm. The grade is suitable for small appliance bezels, vacuum cleaner housings, and interior trim when dimensional tolerances are specified to DIN 16742:2013 TG 6; tighter tolerances require fixture cooling validation. The compound is not recommended for direct food-contact or medical implants because additive migration and long-term biocompatibility data are not part of the published grade dossier. In automotive interior applications, emissions and odour performance must be verified on the final article because the published base-resin data do not include complete vehicle-level VDA 270 or VDA 278 release classifications.
Surface finishing operations impose additional material-selection boundaries. The rubber phase in SD-0150 is dispersed as discrete polybutadiene domains that can be activated by chromic acid etching for electroplating, but published manufacturer data for plating adhesion in this specific configuration is limited. For electroplating, a chromic acid etch line operating at 60–65 °C for 10–15 min is used to oxidize the polybutadiene phase. Peel adhesion measured by ISO 4578:2008 should exceed 0.4 N/mm for interior decorative parts; production parts below 0.25 N/mm are typically rejected. For painting, adhesion tests should follow ISO 2409:2020 cross-cut testing after 24 h cure, with a minimum classification of 1 on a 2 mm grid. Adhesive bonding with cyanoacrylate or semi-structural polyurethane systems requires substrate surface energies above 34 mN/m after isopropanol wipe; corona or plasma treatment may be necessary when mould release agents are present. Solvent-assisted bonding using methyl ethyl ketone is not recommended because the solvent attacks the SAN matrix and can induce environmental stress cracking in regions of high moulded-in stress.
The grade is normally available in natural or pre-coloured form with a UL 94 HB flame classification at 1.6 mm under UL 94:2023. Compliance with Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 is documented for the base resin, but final article compliance depends on pigments, masterbatch carriers, and metallic inserts. REACH registration status under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 should be confirmed in the supplier’s safety data sheet; candidate-list SVHCs are stated to be below 0.1 wt% in the base compound. Migration of residual acrylonitrile and styrene in unfilled ABS may be below the specific migration limits in food-contact applications, but the grade lacks a broad food-contact approval dossier and should not be selected where 10/2011/EU compliance is required without additional testing.

Continuous-service temperature is not a single-point property. Unstressed unfilled ABS in air is generally limited to 60–80 °C; at 85 °C, surface chalking and yellowing are observed after 1,000 h depending on venting and part thickness. The Vicat softening temperature of 95 °C under ISO 306:2022 B50 is a short-term softening parameter, not an upper service temperature. Contact with methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, toluene, or chlorinated solvents causes stress cracking within minutes under sustained moulded-in stress above 20 MPa. The compound is incompatible with strong oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid and with prolonged immersion in acetic acid above 10 wt% at 40 °C. Copper-containing pigments can catalyse oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase under elevated humidity; if copper-based colourants are unavoidable, the part should be tested for retained impact strength after 500 h at 80 °C and 90% relative humidity. Avoid compounding with amine-based stabilizers where the butadiene phase is exposed to elevated humidity; these combinations can accelerate thermo-oxidative chain scission and lower the notched Izod impact below 15 kJ/m² after ageing.
Melt viscosity data at 230 °C measured by capillary rheometry indicate shear thinning from 450 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 110 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹. The power-law index in the shear-rate range 100–1,000 s⁻¹ is approximately 0.45. This behaviour lowers pressure demand in long flow paths but increases gate blush sensitivity when local shear rates exceed 120,000 s⁻¹. For direct-gated parts, the gate diameter should be at least 0.8 mm; smaller gates increase shear heating and can raise the local melt temperature above 250 °C, producing yellow streaking. When moulding at high screw speeds, the melt residence time should be kept below 15 min at 230 °C to limit toluene-insoluble gel formation. The grade is not optimised for extrusion blow moulding or sheet extrusion requiring high melt strength; for those processes, a high-impact extrusion ABS grade with a lower melt flow rate is preferred, although the resulting cycle time or extrusion output penalty must be evaluated on the intended line.
