LG Chem ABS MP-211 is an amorphous acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding grade supplied as free-flowing pellets. The material is positioned for screw-plasticizing injection molding operations in which melt fluidity, surface hardness, and moderate impact resistance must be balanced against cycle time and dimensional stability. In the LG Chem ABS portfolio, MP-211 is differentiated from high-impact grades by a reduced polybutadiene rubber domain and from high-flow grades by a more viscous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix; the result is a medium-impact general-purpose rheology profile.
At incoming inspection, MP-211 should be evaluated against the supplier’s certificate of analysis using ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt mass-flow rate and ISO 180:2023 for Izod notched impact. These two measurements define the primary trade-off between processability and energy absorption. Because ABS is hygroscopic, exposure to ambient air above 50% RH requires closed hopper storage or desiccant drying. Residual moisture above 0.02% by mass produces splay and silver streaking at the part surface. The following table identifies the standard test matrix used for lot acceptance and end-use qualification.
| Property | Standard Method | Measurement Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Melt mass-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022 | Flow index under defined load and temperature |
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | Mass per unit volume and shrinkage estimation |
| Tensile stress at yield | ISO 527-2:2012 | Short-term load-bearing capacity |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019 | Stiffness under three-point bending |
| Izod notched impact strength | ISO 180:2023 | Energy absorption at defined notch radius |
| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306:2022 | Softening under controlled heating |
| Moisture content | ISO 15512:2019 | Residual water before processing |
Grade-specific nominal values for MP-211 should be taken from the supplier’s technical datasheet and compared against the lot certificate. Published third-party data for this specific grade configuration is limited; therefore, direct substitution into mold-filling simulations or finite-element structural models should use measured lot values rather than generic ABS database entries.
The principal structural variables controlling the property profile of MP-211 are polybutadiene rubber particle size distribution, grafted styrene-acrylonitrile shell morphology, and matrix molecular weight. High-impact ABS grades contain larger or more numerous rubber domains and are designed to retain notched Izod impact at sub-zero temperatures. That modification improves toughness but increases low-shear viscosity and reduces melt mass-flow rate during mold filling. High-flow ABS grades use a lower-viscosity styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and may reduce tensile strength, stiffness, and environmental stress-crack resistance as a consequence. MP-211 occupies an intermediate position. Relative to high-impact grades such as HI-121H, MP-211 generally exhibits lower low-temperature Izod notched impact and higher melt mass-flow rate. Relative to high-flow grades, MP-211 typically retains better dimensional stability and surface hardness under moderate mechanical loading.
For thin-wall housings with nominal wall thickness between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, the melt-flow characteristics of MP-211 reduce injection pressure and improve fill uniformity compared with high-impact grades. For thick structural components requiring impact resistance at -30 °C, a high-impact ABS or ABS/polycarbonate alloy is generally more appropriate. The selection boundary is not fixed; it is determined by the notched Izod requirement at the service temperature, the maximum allowable injection pressure, and the predicted shear rate at the gate.
MP-211 is processed on conventional three-zone screw injection machines with an L/D ratio of 18:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3.5:1. Shutoff nozzles are preferred over open nozzles to minimize drool. A desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below -20 °C is required when the material has been exposed to uncontrolled ambient air. The following processing envelope represents typical starting conditions for medium-flow ABS; actual settings must be established on the intended machine and mold.
| Parameter | Starting Range | Measurement or Control Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-drying temperature | 80 °C | Desiccant dryer hopper inlet |

Melt temperatures above 260 °C increase the risk of thermal degradation; residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 5 min to 10 min during production interruptions. Because MP-211 is amorphous, shrinkage is lower and less anisotropic than semi-crystalline resins. A mold shrinkage allowance of 0.4% to 0.7% is typical for ABS, but the exact value depends on wall thickness, packing pressure, gate freeze time, and fiber orientation if fillers are added.
Mold-filling defects in MP-211 are commonly traced to gate dimensions and injection velocity. For thin-wall parts, the gate diameter should be 60% to 80% of the part wall thickness. For thicker sections, gate land length should be kept below 1.0 mm to prevent premature gate freeze. Tunnel gates with diameters below 0.8 mm can shear-heat the melt and produce yellowing or black specks. Jetting and flow marks indicate the melt front is not establishing stable fountain flow; corrective action includes reducing injection speed, enlarging the gate, or moving the gate to an impingement surface to break the jet.
ABS degrades through chain scission in the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and oxidative attack on the unsaturated polybutadiene phase. Each additional heat history introduces hydroperoxide species and consumes stabilizer package. The result is an increase in melt mass-flow rate, a decrease in notched Izod, and a shift in yellowness index. At regrind levels up to 20% by weight, property change is often acceptable if the regrind is dry, free of fines, and generated under controlled processing conditions. Above 20% by weight, the risk of lot-to-lot variability increases; melt mass-flow rate may rise beyond the qualified processing window and notched Izod may fall below the acceptance limit. Color shift measured by CIELAB can exceed ΔE 1.0 after repeated heat histories.
Regrind particle size should be screened through a 4 mm mesh to avoid bridging in the hopper. Press-side blending above 30% regrind is not recommended without re-qualification using ISO 180:2023 and ISO 1133-1:2022. Hot-runner systems with dead spots or poorly heated manifold sections accelerate degradation. If black specks appear after extended production, the hot runner should be purged or inspected for stagnation zones before adjusting the material formulation.
For end-use compliance, MP-211 should be verified against the supplier’s batch-specific documentation for REACH SVHC under EC No 1907/2006 Article 33 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863. Food-contact use, medical-device use, and potable-water contact require separate migration testing and regulatory assessment because ABS is not universally approved across all jurisdictions. Exposure to ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, and strong organic acids can cause environmental stress cracking; compatibility with service fluids should be evaluated by ISO 22088-3:2006 or an equivalent bent-strip method under the specific strain level and temperature expected in service.
