LG Chem ABS HP-1000 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding resin supplied as cylindrical pellets. The grade is classified under ISO 2580-2 and is formulated without glass fibre, mineral filler, or halogenated flame retardant. Supplier literature reports a density of 1.05 g/cm³ at 23 °C after conditioning to 50 % relative humidity. Melt volume-flow rate, determined according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg, places the material in the intermediate-flow tier for ABS. This flow position permits filling of wall sections down to approximately 1.2 mm in multi-cavity tools without raising melt temperature to the upper permitted limit. The unfilled nature of the grade produces lower anisotropy in mould shrinkage than mineral-filled grades, but it also limits modulus relative to glass fibre-reinforced ABS.
Residual moisture is the dominant process variable associated with surface defects. At ambient relative humidity above 60 %, pellets can pick up sufficient moisture to exceed 0.10 % within 4 h of open storage. Hot-air hopper drying is not adequate when the ambient dew point is above 5 °C. Desiccant drying with a return-air dew point no higher than -30 °C is specified. Pellets should be dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture content of 0.03 % or lower. Processing with moisture above 0.05 % results in steam-driven splay, silver streaks, and increased scatter in notched Izod impact values. Drying above 90 °C should be avoided because surface additives and colourant concentrates can fuse or degrade.
Verification of pellet moisture is performed with a Karl Fischer titrator or a loss-on-drying analyzer calibrated for ABS. A representative pellet sample of 30 g should be tested at 160 °C to constant weight; results above 0.05 % require re-drying before injection. Hopper loaders with hot-air pickup should be avoided in ambient humidity above 70 % RH.
At facilities without central desiccant drying, mobile twin-tower dryers with a bed temperature of 80 °C and a design airflow of 3.8 m³/h per kg/h of material consumption are sufficient. The drier return-air dew point should be recorded hourly during production; values above -20 °C indicate saturated desiccant and require regeneration before continuing.
The following representative values are compiled from supplier technical data. They are not specification limits and must be verified against the lot-specific certificate of analysis.

For closed-loop dimensional tolerances, mould shrinkage is neither uniform nor isotropic. Packing pressure, gate freeze time, and wall thickness affect shrinkage more than the pellet lot itself. Flow-direction shrinkage in a 2.0 mm plaque may be 0.4–0.6 %, while transverse shrinkage may reach 0.6–0.8 %. Rigid mounting bosses with wall thickness above 3.0 mm can produce sink if gate sealing time is shorter than 8 s; holding pressure of 40–60 MPa is typical on hydraulic machines.
HP-1000 occupies an intermediate heat-resistance tier between general-purpose ABS and fully high-heat ABS. Relative to a general-purpose grade such as HI-121H, HP-1000 raises Vicat softening temperature by approximately 4–6 °C under ISO 306:2022 method B50 while retaining a melt volume-flow rate suitable for multi-cavity injection. Relative to a high-heat grade such as HP-181, HP-1000 trades roughly 5 °C of Vicat temperature for improved flow length in thin sections and lower injection pressure. The result is a material position for moulders that require an increased service-temperature margin but cannot accept the melt-viscosity penalty of a fully high-heat ABS.

These differences are visible in tool performance rather than only in data sheets. A high-heat grade may require a 10–15 °C higher melt temperature to fill the same 0.8 mm wall, which shortens safe residence time and increases volatiles. HP-1000 can frequently fill the same tool at a nozzle temperature closer to 240 °C. General-purpose ABS runs at lower melt temperatures but may exceed its Vicat limit in dark-coloured interior surfaces exposed to solar loads.
The grade is not a plating-grade ABS. Electroplating adhesion on ABS depends on a tailored polybutadiene particle size distribution that is etched by chromic acid to create mechanical anchoring. Plating grades in the supplier portfolio are formulated for this etch morphology; HP-1000 is formulated for thermal and flow balance. Published data for decorative electroplating on HP-1000 is limited. Compared to a PC/ABS blend, HP-1000 does not require polycarbonate-specific drying above 100 °C and its heat deflection temperature under 1.80 MPa is lower by roughly 15–25 °C relative to a typical 30 % polycarbonate blend.
Processing is performed on reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with a general-purpose three-zone screw having an L/D ratio of 18:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. Shot size should be maintained between 25 % and 75 % of barrel capacity to limit residence-time distribution. Barrel profiles from feed throat to nozzle are typically set at 190 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 240 °C, with nozzle temperature at 235 °C. Mold temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 70 °C depending on surface finish requirements. Back pressure is held between 5 and 15 bar.
Material degradation is dominated by the polybutadiene phase. At melt temperatures above 260 °C, oxidative scission of unsaturation in the polybutadiene domains increases yellowness and reduces notched Izod impact. A residence time above 8 min at 240 °C can produce brown streaking and an acrid odour. Start-up purging should use styrenic purging compounds, not polyolefin purge, because incompatible purge residues can block gates and create intermittent surface delamination.
Gate diameter should be at least 50–70 % of the part wall thickness for edge gates. Sub-gates with diameters below 0.8 mm produce high shear rates above 50,000 s⁻¹, which can induce rubber-phase migration and surface haze. For thin-wall sections below 1.2 mm, shear heating may lower viscosity locally and improve fill, but it also raises flow-front instability.
Fill studies should use short shots from 60 % to 95 % of cavity volume. The injection pressure curve during filling should remain linear; a sharp rise before 90 % fill indicates gate freeze or insufficient venting. Vent depths for unfilled ABS are typically 0.02–0.04 mm; deeper vents produce flash. Fill times below 0.2 s are not recommended for wall thicknesses above 1.5 mm because air entrapment at the flow front causes burn marks. For hot-runner systems, externally heated manifolds with valve gates are preferred over hot sprue bushings. Colour changes require purging with a styrenic compound.
On production lines converting the grade in 24-cavity hot-runner tools, cycle time is usually limited by cooling rather than plasticating. The recommended hydraulic injection pressure is 80–120 MPa for cavity pressures of 30–50 MPa. Higher cavity pressure improves replication of grain texture but increases mould deflection and flash risk on parting lines with wear. Tools should be designed with balanced runner layouts to keep fill time variation below 5 % across cavities; unbalanced fill creates differential packing and warpage after ejection.
Regrind of sprues and runners may be added up to 20 wt% if the regrind is dry, dust-free, and not thermally degraded. Higher regrind levels shift melt viscosity and reduce low-temperature notched impact. Colour masterbatches should be styrenic; polyolefin-based masterbatches reduce weld-line strength and can create visible delamination.
Back-to-back melt temperature checks with a needle pyrometer before the nozzle are recommended after start-up. A melt temperature delta above 5 °C between the nozzle and the front zone setpoint indicates screw recovery issues or excessive back pressure. Low-gloss and grained surfaces are more sensitive to melt temperature uniformity than to absolute melt temperature because flow-mark visibility depends on temperature distribution at the flow front. Reducing injection acceleration or increasing melt temperature by 5 °C within the safe range can reduce flow-mark visibility, but raising melt temperature above 250 °C solely to eliminate flow marks is not recommended.
HP-1000 is specified for injection-moulded automotive interior structures where continuous service temperature does not exceed approximately 80–85 °C. The Vicat softening temperature of 100 °C under ISO 306:2022 B50 provides a margin against short-duration heat spikes in instrument panel and door trim environments. Components such as lower dashboard carrier frames, HVAC housing flanges, and seat-side trim panels are processed on tools with clamp forces from 180 to 650 tonnes. For exposed upper surfaces, the material is coated or grained because unfilled ABS is not inherently UV-stable; prolonged exposure causes chalking and impact loss.
In electrical enclosure applications, HP-1000 is rated UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm thickness. This classification is not equivalent to V-0, V-1, or V-2. For live-contact housings, comparative tracking index data under IEC 60112 should be generated on the production formulation.
Chemical resistance is typical for ABS. The material resists aqueous acids, alkalis, and many detergent solutions at room temperature but is attacked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents. Environmental stress cracking can occur when moulded-in tensile stress exceeds approximately 40 % of the tensile yield stress in the presence of certain aliphatic hydrocarbons. Validation should follow ISO 22088-3 using a defined strain fixture. For automotive interior low-VOC programmes, a low-VOC variant or validated colourant package may be required; emission behaviour depends on residual styrene and additive package and should be confirmed under VDA 278 or ISO 12219-1. Published data for this specific configuration is limited unless the grade is explicitly supplied with low-VOC certification.
Regulatory documents supplied with the resin include a safety data sheet and a certificate of compliance. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 status are confirmed through supplier certification. Food-contact status under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 is not implied for every shipment; a specific request is required before using the grade in food-contact applications.
Storage should be indoors at 5–35 °C, away from direct sunlight. Partially used bags should be resealed immediately. Open storage for more than 30 min in humid conditions may require re-drying. Pallets should not be double-stacked if the lower bags are under sustained mechanical load because pellet compaction can alter regrind particle size distribution.
