For injection-molded enclosures and structural housings in which resistance to brittle failure at ambient and sub-ambient temperatures governs material selection, LG Chem ABS HI-100 is a high-impact acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied in pellet form for injection molding. Typical melt mass-flow rate is 10 g/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load using ASTM D1238; specific gravity is 1.04 by ASTM D792. The grade combines a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles, increasing energy absorption before crack propagation. Notched Izod impact strength is 40 kgf·cm/cm on 3.2 mm specimens at 23 °C per ASTM D256. Tensile yield stress is 44.0 MPa, flexural modulus is 2,200 MPa, and heat deflection temperature is 88 °C at 18.56 kgf/cm² per ASTM D648. Applications include vacuum cleaner bases, power tool motor housings, electronic equipment enclosures, appliance end panels, and automotive interior structural brackets. The product is typically selected when a general-purpose ABS exhibits stress whitening or edge cracking at fast loading rates or at 0 °C to −20 °C service conditions. It should not be confused with high-flow ABS grades, which exhibit higher melt fluidity and lower elastomer content; those grades are suitable for ultra-thin-wall, long-flow-length parts but provide lower crack-propagation resistance. The manufacturer’s typical values are not specification minima and should be verified against the lot-specific certificate of analysis before production.
Under tensile loading at 23 °C, the SAN continuous phase undergoes shear yielding while the rubber particles act as stress concentrators that initiate microcavitation. This cavitation absorbs energy and prevents the growth of catastrophic surface crazes, which is the dominant failure mechanism in lower-rubber ABS grades. Nominal mold shrinkage for HI-100 is 0.4% to 0.7% depending on wall thickness and gate configuration; the transverse value may exceed the longitudinal value by 0.05% to 0.10%. Water absorption at equilibrium is approximately 0.3% by ASTM D570. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion is 80 × 10−6/°C to 100 × 10−6/°C, which must be incorporated in tolerance calculations for long-dimension parts. For parts with sharp corners, notch radius should be kept above 0.5 mm because abrupt transitions concentrate stress and reduce effective impact resistance.
The principal differentiation from other ABS products is observed in the melt flow index-to-notched Izod relationship. General-purpose ABS grades commonly exhibit notched Izod values in the 20 kgf·cm/cm to 30 kgf·cm/cm range at 23 °C, while high-flow ABS grades may fall below 20 kgf·cm/cm; in contrast, HI-100 typically reports 40 kgf·cm/cm. The higher rubber-phase volume fraction responsible for that impact retention also lowers melt fluidity. A melt mass-flow rate of 10 g/10 min requires a runner and gate design focused on short flow paths or moderate wall thickness. Comparative values are summarized in Table 1.

When processing on a cold-runner injection molding machine, screw geometry should use a compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3.0:1 and an L/D ratio of 20:1 or greater. Melt temperature is held between 200 °C and 230 °C; mold temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C. Back pressure is set at 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa, and injection pressure typically falls between 70 MPa and 100 MPa depending on flow length ratio and gate size. A cushion of 3 mm to 6 mm prevents degraded material from being transferred into the cavity. Hot-runner systems may be used, but nozzle tips and manifold channels should remain below 240 °C to avoid thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase. Color concentrates should use a SAN or ABS carrier; incompatible carrier resins can form delaminated weld-line planes in pigmented parts. Capillary rheometry at 220 °C indicates apparent viscosity in the range 300 Pa·s to 500 Pa·s at 100 s−1, falling below 100 Pa·s at 1,000 s−1. This shear-thinning behavior allows injection through small gates but does not eliminate the throughput penalty compared with high-flow grades. Clamp force requirement is approximately 0.5 to 0.8 tons per cm² of projected area; parts with thin ribs below 1.0 mm require a higher value.
Drying is required when storage has exceeded 6 h in open containers or when relative humidity is above 60%. The target moisture content is below 0.05 wt%; above that level, water vapor hydrolyzes the SAN phase and produces splay or silver streaks on molded surfaces. Desiccant dryer settings of 80 °C to 85 °C for 2 h to 4 h are standard, with a dew point below −30 °C. Hopper dryers are not sufficient in high-humidity plants because they do not deliver the required air dew point. Over-drying at temperatures above 95 °C can sinter pellet surfaces and generate feed-throat bridging. The hopper throat should be maintained below 70 °C to prevent premature agglomeration at the screw intake.
When shear heating is allowed to exceed the polybutadiene degradation ceiling, the rubber particle size distribution shifts toward agglomeration and the resin loses low-temperature impact retention. On compounding extruders with L/D ratios of 36:1 or higher, the high-shear dispersion of rubber particles must be balanced against barrel temperatures above 230 °C. Continued residence time at 240 °C for more than 10 min can increase melt flow index by 15% to 30% and decrease notched Izod by 10% to 20%. This is a process-conflict zone: higher melt temperature improves fill speed but degrades rubber-phase integrity. Nozzle melt temperature should be monitored by direct immersion or infrared thermocouple, not inferred from barrel set point alone. Screw compression ratios above 3.0:1 should be avoided because they amplify shear heating without improving rubber particle distribution.
Mold inserts with surface roughness above 10 µm can nucleate premature shear yielding, and when two melt fronts meet at a weld line, the local orientation of rubber particles is parallel to the interface. In complex multi-gate tooling, the weld-line Izod impact of HI-100 can degrade by 30% to 50% relative to the bulk notched Izod value. Gate placement should move weld lines away from high-stress regions. For parts subjected to drop-ball impact specifications, instrumented falling-dart testing per ASTM D3763 is required because Izod data alone does not measure biaxial deformation. Published data for HI-100 in flat plaque falling-dart configuration are limited; validation should therefore be performed on actual molded parts.
Secondary operations on HI-100 include ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz with amplitude 20 µm to 40 µm, hot-plate welding at 180 °C to 230 °C, and solvent bonding using methyl ethyl ketone or dichloromethane blends. Solvent bonding should be performed in ventilated enclosures because the solvents swell the SAN phase, but high concentrations can induce crazing near stress points. Painting requires surface modification because the polybutadiene-rich surface is nonpolar; adhesion promoters based on chlorinated polyolefins improve cross-cut peel adhesion. Electroplating is possible after chromic acid etching; etched surface roughness should reach 0.5 µm to 1.0 µm Ra for Cu/Ni/Cr layer adhesion.
Compliance claims depend on lot-specific documentation and final article construction. The unfilled and unmodified grade can be supplied with lot-specific RoHS 2011/65/EU declarations for lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE restrictions when the supply contract requires it. REACH SVHC screening under EC 1907/2006 is documented on the safety data sheet, but the 0.1 wt% threshold is evaluated per lot. Food-contact use under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 for acrylonitrile copolymers requires extraction testing on the finished molded article because processing aids and mold release agents can alter migration. UL 94 flammability for the unmodified resin is generally reported as HB at 1.5 mm and above; applications requiring V-2 or better require flame-retardant ABS grades. The grade does not contain UV weathering stabilizers; outdoor exposure without painting or capstock will cause yellowing and embrittlement of the SAN phase.
