LG Chem ABS GP-2200 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied for injection-moulded components requiring moderate stiffness, medium impact resistance, and controlled melt flow. The product is classified as a high-flow GP-series grade, with a published melt volume-flow rate of 20 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg. Density is typically 1.05 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019. The grade is not impact-modified to the level of the LG Chem HI-series, and it does not carry a UL 94 V-0 listing; its standard flammability classification is UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, subject to colour and part thickness. Processors select GP-2200 where melt filling of thin-wall sections, surface replication, and medium flexural rigidity are central acceptance criteria, while recognising that the material retains the moisture sensitivity and thermal-oxidative boundaries common to general-purpose ABS.
Before moulding, GP-2200 must be dried to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt%. Desiccant dryers operating at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a supply-air dew point not higher than −30 °C are standard. At storage relative humidity above 60 %, drying time should be extended toward the upper limit to avoid silver streaks, splay, and reduced tensile elongation at the moulded surface. Melt temperature is normally maintained between 200 °C and 240 °C, with mould temperature between 40 °C and 80 °C. General-purpose injection screws with L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.8:1 are accepted for melt homogeneity without excessive shear heating. Injection pressure is typically 70–140 MPa, and back pressure is held at 0.5–1.5 MPa. Back pressure above 1.5 MPa can raise melt temperature through viscous dissipation and produce yellowing or jetting. In production using 80–120 tonne hydraulic machines, short shots in 1.0 mm wall sections are avoided by raising melt temperature to 225 °C and maintaining injection velocities above 80 mm/s.
| Parameter | Recommended range | Process note |
|---|---|---|
| Drying temperature | 80 °C | Desiccant dryer, dew point ≤ −30 °C |
| Drying time | 2–4 h | Target residual moisture < 0.05 wt% |
| Melt temperature | 200–240 °C | Short residence above 240 °C only |
| Mould temperature | 40–80 °C | Upper range used where surface gloss is specified |
| Injection pressure | 70–140 MPa | Dependent on wall thickness and gate geometry |
| Back pressure | 0.5–1.5 MPa | Higher settings increase shear heating |
| Screw L/D ratio | 20:1–24:1 | Compression ratio 2.0:1–2.8:1 |
The following table consolidates typical published values for LG Chem ABS GP-2200. The values are lot-independent reference data and must be checked against the certificate of analysis for production batches. When North American specifications are applied, tensile and flexural properties may also be reported under ASTM D638-14 and ASTM D790-17; direct numerical equivalence with ISO methods should not be assumed because specimen geometry, conditioning, and strain-rate definitions differ.

Across electrical enclosure applications with nominal wall sections of 1.2–2.0 mm, GP-2200 is typically moulded through a hot-runner system or a cold runner with sprue diameter not below 3.5 mm. Edge-gate dimensions of 0.8–1.5 mm by 2.0–4.0 mm and land lengths below 1.0 mm are common to prevent premature gate freeze-off before complete packing. Weld-line strength in perforated enclosures is below bulk material strength; notched Izod impact measured across a weld line may fall by more than 50 % relative to the value obtained from the same mould without flow recombustion. In snap-fit or screw-boss areas, the tensile strain at break of 15 % under ISO 527-2:2012 requires design radii of at least 0.6 mm at the base of the boss to reduce stress concentration. Processors report that gloss consistency in GP-2200 is more sensitive to mould temperature than to injection-speed variation; polished tooling with surface roughness below 0.5 µm is recommended only where uniform visual appearance is part of the acceptance specification.
GP-2200 is not a direct replacement for impact-modified or flame-retardant ABS grades. Compared with LG Chem HI-121H, the notched Izod impact of GP-2200 is lower, typically near 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C, while high-impact ABS grades are specified where values above 28 kJ/m² under ISO 180:2019 are required. The lower rubber content that reduces impact resistance also provides higher flexural modulus; GP-2200 therefore offers greater rigidity but lower ductility in constrained snap-fits and low-temperature service. When a UL 94 V-0 listing at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm is mandatory, GP-2200 is unsuitable because its standard classification is UL 94 HB. A flame-retardant ABS or a flame-retardant PC/ABS blend must be selected. The grade is not intended for sustained load-bearing service above approximately 70 °C; for continuous thermal exposure above that boundary, heat-resistant ABS grades or engineering thermoplastics with higher heat deflection temperature should be evaluated. Published data for direct long-term creep comparison between GP-2200 and heat-resistant substituted grades is limited, so application-specific testing under the actual load and temperature profile is required.
Storage of unopened bags is recommended at or below 30 °C and below 60 % RH. Bags that remain open for more than 4 h without re-drying may exceed the 0.05 wt% moisture threshold in humid climates, producing surface splay, jetting, and measurable loss in tensile strength. The grade has not been evaluated for repeated hot-water contact or for direct food-contact applications unless a specific regulatory letter is issued by the supplier. Drying air must be free of oil, and hopper loaders should not recirculate ambient air above 60 % RH.
The melt-flow behaviour of GP-2200 is pseudoplastic, with apparent viscosity decreasing as shear rate increases. Published data for this specific grade is limited, but general-purpose ABS of comparable melt-flow rate typically exhibits apparent viscosity in the range of 50–100 Pa·s at 230 °C and 1000 s⁻¹. Hot-runner manifold temperatures are normally set between 210 °C and 240 °C, and total residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 8–10 min. At longer residence times, thermo-oxidative degradation of the butadiene phase manifests as yellowing, reduced notched Izod impact, and an increase in melt-flow rate due to chain scission. In hot-runner tools with high channel volume, shot size should remain above 20 % of barrel capacity to limit residence-time distribution and dead zones. During colour changes, a low-viscosity purging compound should be used; purging temperature may be reduced to 190 °C once the previous polymer has been displaced to avoid carbonisation of residual GP-2200 in corners or valve-gate pockets.
Under normal supply conditions, LG Chem ABS GP-2200 is formulated to satisfy the hazardous substance restrictions of RoHS 2011/65/EU and the applicable REACH candidate list obligations. It does not contain intentionally added deca-BDE or other polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The grade is not certified as a food-contact substance under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 unless a specific lot or grade confirmation is issued by the supplier. For electrical enclosure applications, the UL 94 HB yellow-card classification applies only to the tested thickness and colour range; custom colours and regrind blends may require additional UL 94 testing to maintain the listing.
GP-2200 accepts stearate-based mould releases and standard colour concentrates used with ABS. Amine-based additives should be avoided because they can accelerate thermo-oxidative degradation of the butadiene phase. Continuous external mould-release spray should be limited to start-up; persistent application can interfere with surface texture, adhesion of coatings, and ultrasonic welding. If colour concentrates are used, the carrier resin should be identical to GP-2200 or a compatible ABS grade. Concentrate let-down ratios above 4 wt% may reduce the notched Izod impact below the datasheet value and alter melt-flow rate. In light-coloured parts, zinc stearate loadings above 0.1 wt% can produce plate-out on mould vents and increase tool-cleaning frequency.
For grained or high-gloss surfaces, tool temperature uniformity of ±5 °C is more critical than the absolute set point. During filling, flow-front velocities below 200 mm/s in texture depths of 0.1 mm may fail to replicate the grain. Raising injection velocity at the gate to 80–120 mm/s improves replication but may increase air entrapment; vacuum venting or periodic gas evacuation is recommended for large flat enclosures. Weld lines in multi-gated tools should be positioned away from snap-fit and screw-boss areas because local impact strength may be 40–60 % lower than the bulk material. If the application requires a notched Izod impact above 15 kJ/m² at −30 °C, GP-2200 is not the appropriate grade; low-temperature impact resistance is a known limitation of general-purpose ABS.
