    More Introduction

LG Chem ABS GP-2100F is a flow-modified general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-mold grade supplied in pellet form. The F suffix identifies a high-fluid formulation positioned within the GP series for thin-wall and multi-cavity molding. The two-phase thermoplastic comprises a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix surrounding dispersed polybutadiene-based rubber particles. Under standard conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, the nominal density is 1.04 g/cm³ when determined under ASTM D792-20. The melt mass-flow rate is typically 21 g/10 min at 220 °C with a 10.0 kg piston load under ASTM D1238-23. These values are typical lot-release references, not contractual specification limits, and should be verified against the supplier certificate for each delivery.

Property retention in this material is governed by pellet moisture, regrind fraction, melt residence history, hot-runner geometry, and cooling rate. The property matrix below aggregates conventional public datasheet values; actual production parts may differ because shear heating and mold-vent conditions influence frozen skin-core morphology and orientation. Where international specifications require ISO methods, equivalent evaluations include ISO 1183-1:2019 for density, ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile properties, ISO 178:2019 for flexural properties, ISO 180:2023 for notched impact, and ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt flow. Melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 should be converted using melt density when compared with the ASTM mass-flow result.

What Material Variables Produce the High-Flow Signature?

The enhanced fluidity of GP-2100F relative to standard GP-2100 results primarily from a reduced average molecular weight of the styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase and a lower effective polybutadiene rubber fraction. This combination lowers zero-shear viscosity and raises the melt-flow index while retaining enough rubber-phase toughness for general-purpose enclosures and housings. The single-point ASTM D1238-23 value should be interpreted as a viscosity ranking rather than a direct indicator of in-mold fill. At injection shear rates above 10,000 s⁻¹, the pseudoplastic behavior of ABS produces lower apparent viscosity than the low-shear melt-flow test suggests. Capillary rheometry at three temperatures between 200 °C and 260 °C is advisable for mold-filling simulation; published data for this specific configuration is limited. The lower rubber volume also reduces melt elasticity, which can suppress gate blush in some hot-runner tools but may increase jetting in thick sections if the injection speed is not reduced.

Before processing, the pellets are dried in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a drying-air dew point of −30 °C or lower. The residual moisture target is below 0.05 %. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, drying time should be extended or dryer capacity reduced. Undried material produces splay, silver streaks, weak weld lines, and die drool. On reciprocating-screw injection-molding machines with general-purpose three-zone screws and 20:1 to 22:1 L/D, the feed throat is kept at 30–50 °C, the compression zone at 210–230 °C, and the metering zone at 230–240 °C. Nozzle temperature is often set 5–10 °C below the metering zone to reduce stringing. Mold surface temperature is controlled between 40 °C and 70 °C; the lower end shortens cycle time but reduces gloss and knit-line strength. Screw back pressure is typically 0.5–1.0 MPa, and shot sizes should be maintained between 30 % and 80 % of nominal barrel capacity to avoid excessive residence time.

Barrel residence time above 250 °C should not exceed 10 min during production interruptions. Stagnant melt at the non-return valve seat or hot-runner gate can undergo thermo-oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase, generating black specks. This failure mode is observed as intermittent surface defects that migrate between cavities in a multi-cavity tool. If black specks appear, the front zone and hot runner should be purged with a commercial purging compound and the non-return valve inspected for polymer gel accumulation. On a 1,500 kN clamp force injection machine with a 30 mm diameter screw, shot-weight fluctuation typically remains below 0.3 % when the non-return valve is in good condition and the cushion is maintained at 3–5 mm. Variations above this threshold frequently indicate screw-tip wear, moisture variation, or regrind segregation.

    When GP-2100F Replaces GP-2100 in Thin-Wall Molds

The most direct substitution in the LG Chem general-purpose ABS line is from GP-2100 to GP-2100F. The flow-modified grade raises melt mass-flow rate from roughly 10 g/10 min to 21 g/10 min under identical ASTM D1238-23 conditions. The fluidity increase reduces short shots in wall sections below 1.2 mm and supports long rib-to-wall flow paths. The trade-off appears in notched Izod impact: room-temperature values are lower than those of GP-2100, typically by 20–30 % depending on specimen thickness and test standard. The substitution is therefore not acceptable where impact strength is the limiting design criterion or where low-temperature drop performance below −20 °C is required.

Gate design should be revalidated after substitution because the lower melt viscosity can amplify jetting in thick sections and may change the gate-freeze time. Hold pressure should be adjusted until part mass stabilizes. A reduction in hold pressure may be possible because the material fills at lower cavity pressure, but packing must still compensate for volumetric shrinkage of 0.4–0.7 % under ASTM D955-21. When a multi-cavity tool shows short shots in the cavity farthest from the sprue, switching to GP-2100F can eliminate those short shots but may produce flash in the first cavity if the runner system is unbalanced; in such cases the runner diameter or injection-speed profile must be rebalanced rather than increasing clamp force alone.

High-impact HI-121H is the preferred grade when snap-fit insertion, drop impact, or sub-zero service conditions dominate. Heat-resistant AF-342 is specified when heat deflection temperature under load must exceed 95 °C, as in painted parts subjected to bake cycles above 80 °C. Flame-retardant ABS grades use different base resins and additive packages; a GP-2100F part rated UL 94 HB must not be used as a drop-in replacement in mains-voltage barriers or components requiring UL 94 V-0 at the same thickness. The following table provides screening-level comparisons only; regional datasheets may differ within normal interlaboratory repeatability.

Typical application classes for GP-2100F include non-load-bearing electronic equipment enclosures, small appliance housings, vacuum cleaner cyclones, cosmetic containers, toy shells, and office equipment panels. The grade is suited to nominal wall thickness between 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm, multi-gate tools, and hot-runner molds where standard GP-2100 may produce short shots or require excessively high injection pressure. In these cavity configurations, the higher melt fluidity permits lower hydraulic injection pressure and lower clamp-force demand, but the pressure reduction must be verified with cavity-pressure transducers. Molds with long cold-runner drops may not show the full benefit because runner solidification can dominate fill pressure before the polymer reaches the gate.

Regulatory documentation for GP-2100F typically states compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for restricted substances in the homogeneous pellet, provided no contaminated colorant, flame-retardant masterbatch, or regrind is introduced during processing. No food-contact status under 21 CFR 177.1020 or corresponding national legislation is assigned automatically to this grade in public technical documentation; written supplier confirmation is required if the part will contact food or potable water. No claim is made for medical-grade or implant use. The stock polymer is handled as a non-hazardous thermoplastic, but thermal decomposition products above 250 °C may include styrene, acrylonitrile, and butadiene-related volatiles, requiring local exhaust ventilation.

The material should be stored in closed moisture-proof packaging at 5–40 °C. Opened packaging should be used within 24 h or resealed with desiccant. The grade is not recommended for continuous service above 70 °C under mechanical load without deflection analysis. It is susceptible to environmental stress cracking in contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and strong acids. Outdoor unpainted exposure leads to UV-induced yellowing and surface microcracking. In applications requiring UV stability, a UV-stabilized capstock, paint, or weathering-protection package is required. Batch-to-batch variation in melt flow rate is commonly controlled within ±2 g/10 min; purchased lots should be accompanied by a certificate showing the exact melt-flow value and notched impact result. If a lot arrives at the upper melt-flow limit, molders may compensate by reducing melt temperature by 5–10 °C or increasing hold pressure to maintain part mass.

Compared with standard GP-2100, GP-2100F reduces melt viscosity but also lowers ductility. Compared with extrusion grades in the LG Chem ABS line, GP-2100F is not intended for sheet extrusion or thermoforming because its low melt strength can produce draw-down and sag. The grade is also not suitable for electroplating-grade applications where adhesion to electroless copper or nickel requires a high-butadiene plating grade; published data for this specific configuration is limited and requires supplier validation on the actual tool.
