    More Introduction

LG Chem ABS GP-2100 is introduced as a general-purpose injection-molding grade within the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene family. The pelletized product is positioned for rigid parts that require higher melt flow than typical high-impact ABS and can accept moderate impact loading. Supplier literature, based on specimens conditioned under ASTM D618 at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, places specific gravity at 1.04 (ASTM D792), melt flow rate at approximately 20 g/10 min (ASTM D1238, 220 °C/10 kg), tensile yield strength in the 42–45 MPa range (ASTM D638), flexural modulus between 2,250 MPa and 2,400 MPa (ASTM D790), and notched Izod impact from 160 J/m to 200 J/m (ASTM D256). Heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa is typically 84–86 °C (ASTM D648), Vicat softening is 95–98 °C (ASTM D1525), and the natural unfilled grade is rated UL 94 HB. The balance of properties supports short-cycle injection molding, thin-wall structural components, and parts with long flow-length-to-thickness ratios, subject to validation on production tooling.

What separates a general-purpose ABS from high-impact and flame-retardant ABS grades?

In comparison with high-impact ABS, GP-2100 contains a lower volume fraction of dispersed polybutadiene rubber in the continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. This difference reduces melt viscosity, improves spiral flow at equal barrel settings, and lowers notched Izod and puncture energy. High-impact ABS grades such as LG Chem HI-121H are therefore specified for power-tool housings, safety helmets, and thick structural parts that require high energy absorption, while GP-2100 is specified for multi-cavity electronic covers and small appliances where fast fill and short cycles dominate. Flame-retardant ABS grades use brominated or phosphate additive packages that raise melt viscosity, require lower barrel temperatures, and can plate out on hot-runner surfaces if overheated; their UL 94 V-0 or V-2 ratings are used when regulatory flammability requirements exclude UL 94 HB. Relative to PC/ABS blends, GP-2100 has lower heat deflection and lower multi-axial impact, but it offers lower density, easier hydrolysis resistance, and better retention of melt viscosity after extended screw-barrel residence.

Color concentrates, mold releases, and antistatic packages can alter GP-2100 melt viscosity and impact. Carriers based on polystyrene or SAN are generally compatible with the ABS matrix; EVA or polyolefin carriers are to be avoided because they can cause delamination and weld-line weakness. If color is added at the press, let-down ratios must be controlled within supplier-documented limits and pre-drying of the masterbatch should match the base resin. Mold releases containing silicone can reduce paint adhesion; external mold release should be applied only after verifying downstream painting, printing, or adhesive bonding. Plate-out on mold surfaces is minimized by lower residence time and moderate screw recovery speeds.

The dispersed rubber phase in GP-2100 is grafted to the SAN matrix during bulk or emulsion polymerization, and the post-reaction blend leaves a fine dispersion of particles that control crack deflection and melt elasticity. Lower rubber content than high-impact ABS reduces die swell and improves surface gloss replication from polished mold surfaces; the trade-off is reduced resistance to crack propagation, particularly at sharp corners and weld lines. Thermal degradation in the melt begins with oxidative attack on polybutadiene unsaturation when oxygen is present; yellowness index increases detectably above 250 °C, and hold times above 10 min at 260 °C can generate low-molecular-weight SAN oligomers that migrate to the melt surface and adhere to molds. Processing therefore minimizes residence time in the barrel, uses oxygen-limited hopper conditions, and avoids over-drying above 90 °C, which can oxidize the rubber phase and shift formulation color.

Before molding, pellets are dried in a desiccant-hopper dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reduce absorbed moisture below 0.05 wt %; moisture above this boundary volatilizes during plastication and generates splay, silver streaks, and brittle weld lines. Barrel settings from rear zone to nozzle are maintained between 190 °C and 230 °C, with mold temperature controlled at 40–70 °C for dimensional stability. A general-purpose reciprocating screw with 18:1–22:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is adequate; back pressure is held at 0.3–0.7 MPa, screw cushion at 3–6 mm, and fill velocity is set high enough to avoid flow marks but low enough to avoid shear heating. Production-scale hydraulic presses typically record 10–20 % lower peak injection pressure on GP-2100 than on a high-impact ABS at the same melt temperature, but gate freeze occurs earlier; velocity-to-pressure switchover should therefore be set before 95 % of shot volume. Hot-runner systems are acceptable when dead spots are eliminated and internal shear heating is minimized.

Mechanical test protocols, specimen conditioning, and lot-to-lot monitoring

Measurements used for lot-release qualification are performed on injection-molded specimens prepared with defined end-gate and fan-gate conditions and conditioned for 40 h at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % ± 5 % relative humidity under ISO 291 or ASTM D618. Tensile yield strength is determined on Type I bars per ASTM D638 at 50 mm/min; flexural modulus is measured per ASTM D790 on 127 mm × 12.7 mm × 3.2 mm bars with a 16:1 span-to-depth ratio and 1.3 mm/min crosshead speed; notched Izod is generated per ASTM D256 with a V-notch and corrected for specimen width. Melt flow rate is confirmed per ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238 at 220 °C/10 kg; mold shrinkage is reported as 0.4–0.7 % in the flow direction under ASTM D955 and is tool-dependent. Dimensional stability in service remains limited by the amorphous nature of the SAN matrix; continuous loading above 60–70 °C can produce creep.

When thin-wall fill length is the controlling design constraint

When GP-2100 is applied to thin-wall enclosures and bezels where nominal wall thickness is below 1.5 mm and flow length from the gate exceeds 150 mm, the lower melt viscosity reduces short shots and permits faster linear fill speeds without excessive clamp force. The grade is used in small electric/electronic housings, office automation covers, cosmetic packaging, stationery, and appliance trim. Gate geometry should include generous radii; a fan gate or tab gate with thickness at 60–80 % of the part wall is preferred when surface flow marks are unacceptable. Weld lines around core pins retain approximately 50–70 % of bulk notched Izod; snap-fit locations should be moved away from weld lines or reinforced with ribs to compensate for reduced energy absorption. During mold trials on a 1,200 kN hydraulic injection machine, filling a 1.0 mm plaque required lower holding pressure than a medium-impact ABS, but sink depth on bosses increased if holding time was shortened below gate-seal time. The material is not suitable for thick load-bearing parts where impact failure could result in sharp fragment release.

For regulatory submissions, the supplier documentation for GP-2100 must be obtained for the specific production lot; typical ABS grades are accompanied by statements covering REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended, including restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE below 0.1 % by weight in homogeneous material. The grade is not supplied as a food-contact material unless a specific letter of conformity is issued for the finished molded article. Post-industrial regrind can be blended with virgin pellets up to 20 wt % when the regrind is dry, free of oil, and free of thermally degraded black specks; higher regrind fractions lower notched Izod by roughly 10–15 % and should be validated by ASTM D256 testing from start, middle, and end of the production run. Storage of unopened bags below 30 °C and 60 % relative humidity minimizes moisture reabsorption. Published data for prolonged UV weathering of natural GP-2100 is limited; outdoor applications require carbon-black loading or a dedicated UV-stabilized ABS grade.
