    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

LG Chem ABS BP-460 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade. The manufacturer designates the material for thin-wall moulded articles, small appliance housings, cosmetic packaging, toy components, office equipment parts and consumer electronics accessories in which high melt-volume-flow, surface gloss and dimensional repeatability are the primary selection criteria. The grade is not positioned for maximum impact toughness or unpainted outdoor service. Representative physical data reported in the ISO 10350-1:2017 single-point format include density 1.04 g/cm³ measured under ISO 1183-1:2019 and melt mass-flow rate 35 g/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg load under ISO 1133-1:2022. These values define a medium-to-high flow ABS with adequate stiffness for snap-fit assembly and light-duty structural parts.

For lot acceptance, the producer’s certificate of analysis should be consulted because published values are typical rather than guaranteed minima. Mould shrinkage is reported in the range 0.4–0.7% according to ISO 294-4:2018, but the actual value varies with gate geometry, hold pressure, wall thickness and flow orientation. Discoloration, gloss level and mechanical properties in pigmented lots may differ from natural-resin values because colorants and processing stabilizers alter the thermal and rheological response of the compound.

Which property set separates BP-460 from high-impact and plating ABS grades?

The primary differentiators are flow length, surface appearance and impact response. Unfilled ABS is a heterogeneous polymer system in which grafted polybutadiene rubber particles absorb impact energy. In BP-460, the effective rubber volume fraction is lower than in the producer’s high-impact grades, while the styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase governs melt rheology and visible gloss. The result is a higher melt-volume-flow and a lower notched impact strength relative to a high-impact grade such as HI-121H. For design selection, BP-460 is appropriate when injection pressure for thin-wall cavities, rather than Charpy or Izod energy, is the controlling process variable.

The comparative difference is most visible in melt processing: BP-460 exhibits a melt mass-flow rate roughly two to three times that of conventional high-impact ABS. This enables shorter fill time at equal wall thickness, but the trade-off is lower notched Izod impact at room temperature and a more brittle response at sub-zero temperatures. Plating grades such as MP-211 differ further because the butadiene particle-size distribution and surface chemistry are adjusted for oxidative etching and electroless metal deposition. Published data for BP-460 as an electroplating substrate is limited; plate adhesion performance equivalent to MP-211 should not be assumed without laboratory etchability and peel-strength testing.

Drying before melt processing is mandatory when the resin has been exposed to atmospheric moisture at relative humidity above 60%. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower and a drying temperature of 80 °C for 2–4 h is recommended. Residual moisture content should be verified below 0.02% by weight using Karl Fischer titration or a calibrated moisture analyzer; excess moisture hydrolyzes the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix at melt temperature and produces surface splay, reduced weld-line strength and inconsistent surface gloss.

On conventional hydraulic injection moulding machines with three-zone screws of L/D ratio 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, the starting barrel profile is rear 180–200 °C, middle 190–210 °C, front 200–220 °C, with nozzle temperature 210–230 °C. Mould temperature is typically 30–60 °C; higher mould temperatures improve gloss and knit-line visibility but extend cooling time. Injection pressure normally falls between 70 MPa and 100 MPa, and hold pressure is commonly 50–70% of the actual peak injection pressure. Back pressure of 0.3–1.0 MPa and screw speed 30–60 rpm provide adequate homogenization without excessive shear heating. Melt residence time at barrel temperatures above 230 °C should be kept below 5 min to suppress yellowing and oxidative degradation product formation.

Typical production bottlenecks on multi-cavity tools are gate freeze-off before compaction and inconsistent fill at cavities positioned at the end of a runner system. The higher melt flow of BP-460 reduces pressure drop along narrow runners, but the same flow increases the risk of flash if clamp force is marginal. For tools with projected area 0.05 m² and effective cavity pressure 35–50 MPa, required clamp force is approximately 1,750–2,500 kN; this is an arithmetic estimate and does not replace actual tool trials or cavity-pressure transducer measurements.

When mould fill pressure limits thin-wall cavity length

Spiral-flow and short-shot trials on injection moulding machines establish the pressure-limited fill envelope. In such trials, the distance a melt front travels before solidification is controlled by melt temperature, mould temperature, injection speed, hydraulic pressure and the melt volume-flow rate of the resin. Because BP-460 has a melt mass-flow rate of approximately 35 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022, it fills long thin flow paths at lower pressure than a 15 g/10 min high-impact ABS. The difference is most relevant for wall sections between 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm; at wall thickness below 1.0 mm, even high-flow ABS in a cold mould can solidify before full pack.

A practical consequence is that multi-cavity cosmetic caps and small appliance bezels can be filled through sub-0.6 mm pin gates without exceeding 90 MPa injection pressure when mould temperature is maintained above 40 °C and fill time is shorter than 1.0 s. If fill time exceeds 1.0 s, the fountain flow front cools and the gate freezes; hold pressure cannot then compensate for volumetric shrinkage, and sink marks or internal voids appear. Injection speed should be set as high as the machine and venting allow without causing jetting; a fast linear flow front also reduces visible flow lines on high-gloss surfaces.

Limitations of the property set appear in thicker parts where impact loading controls. Because BP-460 has lower notched Izod impact strength than high-impact ABS, applications requiring ductile failure in room-temperature drop tests should evaluate a high-impact grade. Similarly, at sub-zero temperatures the impact response declines as the rubber phase approaches its glass transition. Published data for BP-460 at −30 °C is limited, but general ABS behavior indicates a sharp reduction in notched impact at low temperature. BP-460 should not be used for parts requiring an ISO 180 notched Izod value above 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C without additional instrumented impact verification.

    Compliance and lot acceptance documentation

Raw-material certification should include lot number, melt mass-flow rate, density, tensile yield stress, notched Izod impact and colour coordinates. The manufacturer supplies a safety data sheet and product data sheet; the safety data sheet contains regulatory status. For the European Union, the base resin is normally declared compliant with RoHS 2011/65/EU and its amendments, and the supplier should provide a declaration under REACH Article 33 if any substance of very high concern is present above 0.1% by weight. For consumer goods, finished-article testing under EN 71-3 migration limits for heavy elements is required for toys; raw ABS does not itself constitute a toy-grade certification.

Flame retardancy of BP-460 is not a high-performance feature. The grade is typically assigned UL 94 HB; applications requiring V-2, V-1 or V-0 must use a flame-retardant ABS or polymer blend. The UL Yellow Card should be checked for current thickness and colour restrictions because UL classification is thickness-dependent and may not apply to all pigmented variants. Food-contact status is not declared for BP-460 in the absence of finished-article testing. If a food-contact application is considered, migration testing under EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 is required, and the colorants and processing aids used in the formulation may affect overall compliance. Published data for food-contact use of this particular grade is limited.

Operational boundaries are defined by the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and the polybutadiene rubber phase. Long-term service above 60 °C under mechanical load is not recommended unless creep, stress relaxation and heat deflection are evaluated on the finished part. Exposure to solvents such as toluene, methyl ethyl ketone and trichloroethane can craze or dissolve the SAN phase; cleaning and bonding agents should be selected from aliphatic hydrocarbon or mild alkaline systems after compatibility testing.

Recyclate use in production is possible, but dried regrind from uncontaminated sprues and runners should not exceed 20 wt% without a property re-verification program because successive heat histories reduce impact and yellow the polymer. BP-460 should not be combined with flame-retardant additives or amine-based antistatic packages without process testing; some additives lower thermal stability and produce plate-out on tool surfaces. The grade is not intended for outdoor unpainted weatherable service; ultraviolet exposure causes SAN yellowing and surface microcracking unless stabilizers or coatings are applied.
