LG Chem ABS AF-312 is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade intended for electrical and electronic enclosure applications requiring a vertical burn classification on the finished component. The matrix consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer with dispersed polybutadiene rubber domains; the flame-retardant mechanism is based on a brominated additive used with an antimony trioxide synergist. Published producer data identify a nominal specific gravity of 1.17 under ISO 1183-1 and a melt mass-flow rate of 33 g/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg piston load in ISO 1133-1. These values place AF-312 in the high-flow segment of flame-retardant ABS, which is selected when thin-wall filling pressure becomes the limiting process variable. Published data for this specific grade at wall sections below 1.5 mm are limited; final part validation is mandatory.
Vertical burn classification is determined according to IEC 60695-11-10, the test procedure referenced by UL 94 for the vertical burning test. The published classification for AF-312 is V-0 at a specimen thickness of 2.0 mm. A V-0 result requires that after two 10 s flame applications, the total afterflame time does not exceed 50 s, no individual afterflame time exceeds 10 s, and no flaming drips ignite the cotton indicator. The rating is thickness-dependent. Ribs, bosses, knit lines, and colour concentrates can change ignition resistance; no component should be claimed as V-0 based solely on the resin data-sheet rating when the final wall section is below 2.0 mm. Halogenated flame-retardant systems operate primarily through gas-phase radical trapping. Antimony trioxide promotes the formation of antimony trihalide intermediates that interrupt the combustion chain, but the final char yield is not the main mechanism of action.
For material selection purposes, representative property values from the producer technical datasheet are listed below. The values are typical values, not specification limits; lot-to-lot variation should be established with the producer before incoming inspection limits are fixed.

AF-312 differs from general-purpose ABS grades such as LG Chem HI-121 in density, flammability, and melt-flow balance. Unfilled general-purpose ABS typically has a specific gravity near 1.04–1.06 and may show notched Izod impact values above 20 kJ/m² because it does not carry the particulate flame-retardant package. AF-312 contains a brominated flame-retardant system that raises density and reduces tensile strain at break; the datasheet value for tensile strain at break is approximately 10% under ISO 527-2. The elevated melt mass-flow rate is obtained through controlled molecular weight in the SAN phase. This provides shorter filling time or lower injection pressure in thin-wall cavities, but it creates a processing trade-off: weld-line strength and heat deflection temperature may be lower than those of lower-flow FR ABS grades. Published data for weld-line strength of this specific grade are limited, and applications with mechanical loading across a knit line should be evaluated with a welded-specimen test rather than a neat-resin data-sheet comparison.
Compared with halogen-free intumescent FR ABS, AF-312 uses a halogenated synergist approach. The halogen-antimony pathway generally permits lower additive loadings and better injection flow to reach a V-0 rating, but the trade-off is higher smoke density during combustion, acidic gas release under fire conditions, and more complex recycling streams under WEEE separation. Phosphorus-based FR systems may produce lower smoke and less corrosive combustion gas, but they can require higher addition levels and may show more severe reductions in tensile strength or melt flow. The selection between the two systems is therefore governed by the end-use fire-safety, environmental, and electrical performance requirements, not by a single flammability value. At apparent shear rates of 103–104 s-1, the high-flow grade is expected to show a lower viscosity than high-viscosity FR ABS; a complete capillary viscosity curve is not consistently published and should be measured for mould-filling simulations.
Before melt plastication, the drying step controls residual moisture. A dehumidifying hopper dryer with an inlet air dew point of -30 °C or lower and an air temperature of 80 °C for 2–4 h is used to reduce surface moisture below 0.02 wt%; moisture is commonly verified by Karl Fischer titration under ISO 15512. Above 0.02 wt%, hydrolysis of the SAN phase can occur during plasticating, producing surface splay and reducing notched Izod impact. If containers have been exposed for more than 24 h to relative humidity above 60%, drying should be extended to 4–6 h or continued until the moisture target is confirmed.
Barrel temperature settings for a general-purpose screw with a 2.2:1 compression ratio and 20:1 L/D are commonly set with the rear zone at 180–200 °C, centre zones at 200–220 °C, and the front/metering zone at 210–230 °C. The nozzle is held at 200–220 °C. Melt temperature should not exceed 240 °C for more than 5 min, because brominated flame-retardant degradation and colour shift become measurable. Production experience on a 100 t hydraulic injection moulding machine with a 25 mm diameter screw has shown that barrel residence time beyond 6 min at 230 °C increases yellowness index by more than 2 units and reduces notched Izod impact by more than 10% relative to normal residence. Mould temperature is maintained at 40–70 °C; lower temperatures may shorten cycle time but increase internal stress near gates and sharp corners. Injection speed should use the fastest fill profile that does not produce jetting or burn marks at the gate. Hold pressure is normally established from gate-seal time, with cavity pressure at the gate held above 30 MPa during solidification. Purging should be performed with a general-purpose polyolefin or commercial purging compound. Acetal purging compounds should be avoided because acidic residues can form at elevated temperatures. Surface bloom from flame-retardant migration can appear after prolonged humid storage; parts exposed to 60 °C and 85% RH for 168 h have been observed to develop a light surface deposit that can interfere with painting, ultrasonic welding, or laser marking.
AF-312 is subject to the restrictions on polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers under EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II. The grade is not formulated with restricted PBB or PBDE, but a supplier declaration should be obtained for each production lot because impurity profiles can vary. Under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the Article 33 candidate-list communication duty applies only above 0.1 wt% for listed substances of very high concern. Published producer declarations for AF-312 do not identify SVHCs above the communication threshold, but the candidate list is updated periodically and the downstream user must verify against the latest official list. The grade contains halogenated flame retardants and is not suitable for halogen-free designation under IEC 61249-2-21; applications calling for chlorine and bromine maximums below 900 ppm should select a halogen-free FR ABS instead. No FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 food-contact clearance should be assumed for this flame-retardant grade.

A material data-sheet V-0 classification is not a substitute for end-product certification. The finished enclosure must be assessed with the final wall thickness, gate location, weld lines, and colour package under the relevant end-product standard.
When the application is an electrical enclosure, the grade is used for power-adaptor housings, control boxes, internal frames, and small appliance covers. The combination of V-0 at 2.0 mm and a melt mass-flow rate of 33 g/10 min supports multi-cavity tooling where fill balance and gate pressure are the controlling variables. The material is not intended for load-bearing structural components because the tensile strain at break is low. Continuous service above 70 °C is not generally recommended for ABS-based materials. Contact with strong organic solvents, esters, ketones, or chlorinated hydrocarbons can attack the SAN phase. Ultraviolet stability is limited without protective coating or UV stabilization; outdoor exposure can cause chalking and surface gloss loss. Published data for accelerated weathering of this specific grade are limited, and applications requiring UV resistance should be validated with ISO 4892-2 using the final colour and surface texture. For printed-circuit-board carriers or connector housings, comparative tracking index under IEC 60112 may also be required; published values for AF-312 are limited and should be measured on the finished part because additives and colour concentrates can alter surface tracking.
In appliance and power-supply enclosures, a resin data-sheet V-0 classification is often supplemented by glow wire testing on the moulded component. Glow wire flammability index is measured under IEC 60695-2-12, and glow wire ignition temperature is measured under IEC 60695-2-13. Published datasheet values for AF-312 under these methods are limited; end-part testing is therefore mandatory. Thin-wall sections below 2.0 mm are prone to premature softening during glow wire contact because the low thermal mass of the wall limits heat conduction away from the contact point. Design compensations include increasing wall thickness at contact regions, adding ribs for heat sinking, or selecting a flame-retardant film insert. Overpacking of thin sections should be avoided because frozen-in stress can increase ignition risk during glow wire testing. Hot-runner systems with externally heated manifolds require thermal homogenisation because local hot spots above 250 °C can degrade the flame-retardant package and create streaking or black specks. The same limitation applies to long residence times in the injection unit; the melt cushion should be kept stable and screw-recovery time should match the cooling time to avoid overheating the brominated system.
