    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

LG Chem ABS AF-303 is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene compound intended for injection-molded parts that must retain a vertical burn rating of V-0 under IEC 60695-11-10. The grade is used in electrical and electronic enclosures, socket bodies, power distribution modules, adaptor shells, and internal office automation components where the polymer must stop propagating flame after removal of the ignition source. Publicly available distributor datasheets indicate a specific gravity of approximately 1.19–1.21 g/cm³ when measured in accordance with ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt mass-flow rate in the range of 25–40 g/10 min under ASTM D1238-20 at 220 °C with a 10 kg load. These values place AF-303 in the medium-flow flame-retardant ABS category rather than in the low-flow high-impact structural ABS category. The material is opaque, and its flame-retardant system is not fully disclosed in public literature; commercial V-0 ABS compounds of this class commonly use a brominated aromatic additive with antimony trioxide synergy, but the exact package should be confirmed with the manufacturer before exposure to specific chemical environments. AF-303 should not be considered a food-contact resin unless a grade-specific compliance letter under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or equivalent regional regulation is issued.

Representative Property Ranges and Test Conditions

Table 1 consolidates representative physical, mechanical, thermal, and flame-retardant data from distributor literature and typical industrial test reports. The values are not batch-specific guarantees; the certificate of analysis supplied with each production lot governs acceptance. Where individual values are reported in both ISO and ASTM methods, the ISO-based value is listed unless otherwise noted.

In thin-wall enclosure production, the practical balance of flow and stiffness governs tool fill. The notched Izod range of 14–20 kJ/m² is adequate for many non-load-bearing electronic housings, but it is not equivalent to high-impact ABS grades used for vacuum cleaner bodies or automotive interior trims. The density penalty of approximately 0.15 g/cm³ relative to general-purpose ABS should be included in part mass and cost calculations. When the design requires a snap-fit or screw boss with high post-molded tensile stress, the molder should verify weld-line and boss load capacity on prototype plaques, because flame-retardant additives can reduce ductility relative to unfilled general-purpose ABS.

Compared with general-purpose ABS, AF-303 replaces the untreated copolymer’s inherently combustible matrix with a flame-retardant additive package that raises density, narrows the notched impact window, and may increase melt flow. Compared with high-impact ABS grades used in appliances, AF-303 is not as ductile and is not the appropriate choice for impact-dominated parts such as vacuum cleaner housings. Compared with flame-retardant PC/ABS, AF-303 generally processes at lower melt temperatures and lower density, but its heat deflection temperature is lower and acid-gas ventilation requirements are more restrictive. Compared with halogen-free flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS grades, AF-303 may require corrosion-resistant tool steel and more frequent vent cleaning because of halogen acid byproducts; material selection should therefore be made after the end-product fire enclosure requirement under IEC 62368-1 is established.

What Injection Molding Constraints Preserve Flame-Retardant Integrity?

Drying is mandatory, and flammability failure in molded parts is frequently traced to excess moisture rather than formulation deviation. The material should be dried in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h to achieve a residual moisture level not exceeding 0.05% by weight; moisture can be verified by ISO 15512:2019 Karl Fischer titration. Barrel temperatures should be maintained at 190–210 °C in the rear zone, 200–220 °C in the compression zone, and 210–230 °C in the metering zone and nozzle, with melt temperature held below 240 °C. Mold temperatures of 40–60 °C provide sufficient surface replication; higher mold temperatures may improve knit-line strength but extend cycle time.

Excessive thermal history degrades the brominated flame-retardant package and can liberate acidic degradation species. On production-scale injection molding machines with general-purpose screws having an L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1, total melt residence time should not exceed 5 min when the machine cycles at the upper end of the melt-temperature window. During interruptions longer than 30 min, the barrel should be purged with a general-purpose ABS or a polypropylene with similar melt viscosity to displace thermally degraded material. Back pressure should be kept between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa to maintain homogenization without over-shearing the flame-retardant system. Screw retraction should be set to avoid sucking air into the melt, and the nozzle should be fitted with a shut-off device for hot-runner layouts if leaking must be prevented.

Because distributor datasheets report a melt mass-flow rate range of 25–40 g/10 min, production lots should be monitored for melt flow shift; a variation of 5 g/10 min can alter injection pressure and gate freeze time in thin-wall tools. Mold vents of 0.02–0.04 mm depth are common for ABS, and clogged vents can lead to burn marks or short shots. Vent plate-out is a known failure mode on high-volume flame-retardant ABS tools; pulling and cleaning intervals should be established during tool trial rather than extended without inspection. Tool steel selection should account for the mildly corrosive potential of halogenated flame-retardant degradation byproducts.

Using Regrind Without Compromising UL 94 Recognition

Clean sprue, runner, and rejected parts can be re-incorporated at up to 20 wt% in non-appearance applications, provided the granulate is free of dust and moisture. For molded parts requiring UL 94 V-0 recognition, regrind addition does not automatically fall under the original UL certification; the molder must validate the final blend under the same thickness and conditioning protocol used for virgin material. Because brominated flame-retardant ABS can undergo slight molecular weight reduction and additive depletion during reprocessing, higher regrind fractions may reduce notched impact strength and increase melt flow rate. The material should not be blended with general-purpose ABS at high levels without re-qualification; even small changes in rubber content or flame-retardant concentration can shift the burn extinction time from acceptable to marginal.

    When Thin-Wall Enclosures Require a Flow-Impact Balance

In wall sections below 1.5 mm, the processing window between mechanical impact and flame-retardant performance becomes increasingly sensitive. AF-303 is typically specified where wall stock ranges from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm; flow length should be calculated using mold-filling simulation at the chosen melt temperature rather than extrapolated from standard spiral flow tests alone. Parts requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm or lower should be evaluated against the current UL Yellow Card for AF-303, because published recognition may list 2.0 mm as the minimum thickness. Mold-filling studies conducted with two-platen hydraulic or servo-electric injection molding machines using 24:1 L/D screws indicate that the material can fill multi-drop hot-runner layouts when melt temperature is maintained near 230 °C and injection pressure is allowed to reach 90–120 MPa. Raising melt temperature above 240 °C to improve fill is not recommended because decomposition of the flame-retardant package can cause splay, vent plate-out, and reduced delamination resistance at the weld line.

End-product fire enclosureIEC 62368-1Material UL 94 V-0 supports but does not guarantee end-product compliance

AF-303 is not intended for continuous outdoor weathering; unprotected ultraviolet exposure degrades the butadiene phase and may cause chalking, gloss loss, and embrittlement over a service-dependent period. It is also not recommended for hot-water or steam-contact applications because flame-retardant ABS can undergo hydrolysis and additive migration. The material exhibits the solvent susceptibility typical of ABS: ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents can cause stress crazing, especially in molded-in tensile stress zones such as snap-fits and screw bosses. Direct contact with PVC gaskets or amine-containing adhesives should be evaluated because low-molecular-weight plasticizers and amines can initiate surface softening or interfere with adhesion. During any fire event, halogenated flame retardants can release acid gases; therefore production areas and end-use installations should provide adequate ventilation. Laser marking, painting, and metallization require grade-specific trials because the flame-retardant package influences surface tension, char formation, and adhesion.
