Globalprene® SEBS 7554 is a hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer produced by LCY Chemical Corporation under the Globalprene trade name. The grade is classified as a saturated triblock thermoplastic elastomer in which polystyrene end-blocks, with a glass transition temperature near 95 °C, are linked through an ethylene/butylene midblock derived from selective hydrogenation of a polybutadiene precursor. The hydrogenation step saturates the midblock and reduces residual unsaturation to a level commonly reported as less than 1 mol%, which distinguishes the material from unhydrogenated SBS and from partially hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers. In its uncompounded state, the polymer has a styrene content of approximately 30 wt% per ASTM D5775, a specific gravity of 0.910 per ASTM D792, a Shore A hardness of 70 per ASTM D2240, a tensile strength of 18 MPa at 500 mm/min per ASTM D638, an elongation at break of 600%, and a melt mass-flow rate of 0.5 g/10 min under 230 °C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022. These values are representative technical data, not batch-release specifications, and lot-specific certificates of analysis from LCY should be consulted for production qualification.

The principal difference from unhydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers is the saturated midblock. In SBS, the butadiene segment retains allylic hydrogens that promote autoxidation at sustained service temperatures above approximately 60 °C and cause surface cracking under ozone exposure. Globalprene® SEBS 7554 has a hydrogenated ethylene/butylene midblock that withstands longer thermal aging and eliminates the need for large antichecking wax loadings in outdoor compounds. Compounds prepared from SEBS 7554 are commonly evaluated under ASTM D1149-18 for ozone resistance and ASTM G154-23 for fluorescent UV weathering, whereas SBS compounds typically fail qualified outdoor requirements at equivalent film thicknesses. In circulating-air aging at 100 °C for 168 h, typical SEBS compounds retain more than 80% of initial tensile strength; comparable SBS compounds can embrittle within 72 h because of oxidative crosslinking and chain scission in the unsaturated midblock.
Within the broader SEBS family, the 30 wt% styrene content places SEBS 7554 in an intermediate-hardness position. Higher styrene grades, generally near 40–45 wt%, display higher Shore hardness and tensile strength but imparted compound flexibility is lower. Lower-styrene grades near 20 wt% exhibit softer elastic response and improved low-temperature flexibility but reduced tensile strength and higher oil acceptance. The model designation 7554 also differentiates the grade by molecular weight and melt viscosity. Grade-to-grade comparisons with adjacent SEBS products should be confirmed using LCY technical data, because published open-literature data for this specific configuration is limited.
Pre-drying of the pelletized feed is required when residual moisture exceeds 0.05 wt%. Drying in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80 °C for 2–3 h is sufficient for material exposed to ambient air at relative humidity above 60%. The melt processing window is 190–230 °C. On a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a 40:1 L/D ratio, barrel temperature profiles are typically set in the range of 170/180/190/200/200/200/205/210 °C from feed throat to die. At melt temperatures above 260 °C, oxidative degradation of the ethylene-butylene midblock accelerates; residence times above 10 min at 270 °C produce measurable reductions in ultimate tensile strength. For single-screw operations, a barrier screw with a compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3.5:1 and a length-to-diameter ratio of at least 24:1 reduces surging during continuous extrusion.
Thermoplastic elastomer compounds based on Globalprene® SEBS 7554 typically use paraffinic white oil as an extender because it selectively solvates the ethylene/butylene midblock while leaving polystyrene domains as physical crosslinks. Oil loadings between 50 phr and 150 phr reduce Shore A hardness from approximately 70 to 20–35 and increase melt flow. Aromatic oils are incompatible with the styrene domains and should not be used. Naphthenic oils show intermediate compatibility and can lower compression set, but compounds extended with naphthenic oil may show higher extractables when tested under ASTM D471 after exposure to IRM 901 oil.
Addition of 10–20 phr isotactic polypropylene raises the upper service temperature and reduces elongation at break, while also increasing the quantity of continuous-phase crystallinity. The sequence of incorporation on a twin-screw line is dry blending of polymer and polypropylene before downstream injection of process oil, which prevents pellet agglomeration and stabilizes torque. Distributive mixing elements are placed after the first kneading block to disperse the oil without excessive shear heating. Compounds processed under these conditions are typically pelletized in an underwater pelletizer and require post-extrusion cooling below 40 °C before bagging to prevent blocking.
Hot-melt adhesive and sealant formulations introduce Globalprene® SEBS 7554 at 15–30 phr with hydrocarbon tackifier resins and paraffinic process oil. Application is generally conducted through slot-die or spiral-spray equipment at 160–180 °C, where target viscosity is controlled below 10,000 mPa·s for pneumatic spray coverage. The saturated midblock improves thermal stability of the adhesive during prolonged pot residence compared with SIS or SBS. Viscosity drift over 8 h at 180 °C is commonly less than 10% for SEBS formulations, whereas SIS formulations can exceed 25% under identical conditions. The product is also used in elastic film, gasket, soft-touch grip, and polymer modification applications where resistance to oxidation, ozone, and outdoor weathering is required without chemical vulcanization.
Globalprene® SEBS 7554 is supported by regulatory documentation covering REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Manufacturer statements indicate that the neat polymer contains no Substances of Very High Concern above 0.1 wt% under REACH Article 33 and no restricted heavy metals above RoHS limits. Food-contact status is not inherent to the neat polymer; end-use compounds require evaluation under applicable national legislation, FDA 21 CFR food-contact provisions, or EU Regulation 10/2011 for plastic materials intended to come into contact with food.
The documented operational boundary includes the melt temperature ceiling of 260 °C and the restriction against aromatic oil extension. The neat polymer is also incompatible with polar engineering thermoplastics such as polyamides and polycarbonate in rigid overmolding operations. When adhesion to those substrates is required, maleic anhydride-grafted SEBS tie-layer technology is used rather than SEBS 7554. The polymer is insoluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and ethyl acetate at room temperature; solvation occurs in toluene, cyclohexane, and mixtures of toluene with ethyl acetate. Published creep and fatigue data for Globalprene® SEBS 7554 in specific finished-component configurations are limited, so application-specific validation is required under the end-use load, temperature, and exposure conditions.
