How Does Coextruded ASA Capstock Maintain Corner-Weld Integrity on Rigid PVC Window Lineals?

Coextruded KUMHO® ASA XC280G capstock over rigid PVC is specified where exterior profile surfaces require colour retention without post-extrusion painting. On a window-profile line, the PVC substrate is plastified in a 54 mm conical twin-screw extruder at 190–200 °C, while the ASA capstock is plastified in a 35 mm single-screw satellite extruder with a barrier screw and an L/D of 30:1. The ASA melt stream is introduced through a coextrusion block and combined die at 215–230 °C. Capstock thickness is maintained between 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm on a 6 mm profile wall, equivalent to 8–12 % of the total cross-section. Pre-drying is performed in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h with a dew point of −30 °C; residual moisture must remain below 0.05 wt% because the acrylate ester segments in ASA hydrolyse at processing temperatures and generate splay on the capstock surface.

The capstock compound in this application typically contains 8–12 phr of rutile TiO₂ with an inorganic surface treatment, 0.3–0.8 phr of an oligomeric HALS, and 0.2–0.5 phr of a benzotriazole UV absorber. The TiO₂ level is not increased beyond 15 wt% in this configuration because higher filler loadings reduce corner-weld ductility. When the capstock is joined by 45° mitre welding at 250–260 °C, the fusion zone is already the weakest point in a rigid PVC profile; a stiff, highly filled ASA layer concentrates bending stress at the weld line and can reduce corner strength below the minimum published in EN 514 for uPVC windows. Processors maintain a viscosity ratio between the ASA capstock and PVC substrate at the die land below 1.6:1. Exceeding this ratio at line speeds above 2.0 m/min produces encapsulation faults, transverse layer-thickness oscillation, and edge-tear defects that are visible only after punching drainage slots.

Calibration of the coextruded profile is carried out in a dry vacuum calibrator with 8–12 sizing plates. The capstock surface contacts a polished pre-cooling plate at 70–85 °C to prevent PVC decomposition blistering before the profile enters the main calibration tank. Finished window lineals and fascia boards are tested under EN 12608-1 for dimensional tolerances, EN 477 for colour variation after weathering, and ASTM D4726 where North American profile specifications apply. Heat-shrinkage testing per ISO 2505 at 100 °C for 1 h should show longitudinal shrinkage not exceeding 2.0 % and transverse shrinkage not exceeding 0.5 %; higher values lead to seam opening in dark capstock colours during summer exposure.

Thermo-oxidative and photolytic failure in unpainted automotive cowl vent grilles is governed by the acrylate rubber domain size, SAN matrix molecular weight, and the uniformity of hindered amine stabilizer dispersion in the melt stream. In a production injection moulding cell for a 1.4 kg cowl vent grille, KUMHO® ASA XC280G is processed on a 1600-kN clamp force press with a two-platen tool. Barrel temperatures are set at 220 °C, 230 °C, 240 °C, 245 °C, and 250 °C from feed throat to nozzle; the melt temperature at the nozzle is held at 245–255 °C. The mould is thermostatted at 60 °C using counterflow circuits to stabilise surface gloss and prevent cold-slug marks at the end of flow. A sequential valve-gated hot runner with three drops opens the centre gate first, delays the outer gates by 0.6 s, and fills the cavity in 2.2–2.8 s. Holding pressure is set at 45–60 MPa for 6–8 s, followed by screw recovery at 80–100 rpm; total melt residence time above 240 °C should be kept below 8 min to limit SAN phase yellowing.

The unpainted compound incorporates 0.5–1.0 wt% high-surface-area furnace black or 0.2–0.5 wt% transparent iron oxide for low-gloss black and dark grey surfaces, plus 0.4–0.8 wt% HALS and 0.2–0.5 wt% benzotriazole. Colour performance is validated under SAE J2527 using a total radiant exposure of 2500 kJ/m² at 340 nm; OEM validation protocols commonly require ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0 and retained Charpy notched impact strength of at least 6 kJ/m² when tested per ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C after weathering. Because unpainted ASA exterior parts are not covered by an organic clearcoat, low-molecular-weight SAN oligomers can generate surface haze during prolonged summer exposure. This is reduced by vacuum degassing at the injection unit nozzle and by adding 0.05–0.15 wt% of an acid-neutralising lubricant system to the compound.

Rheological Boundaries in Thin-Wall Outdoor Electrical Enclosure Molding

Outdoor electrical enclosures and meter-box covers moulded from KUMHO® ASA XC280G must satisfy UL 746C outdoor suitability while retaining dimensional stability under internal heat from terminal blocks. The limiting flow path is a 1.5 mm side wall with a flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio of 180:1 in a four-cavity family tool; at this ratio injection pressure rises above 90 MPa unless the melt temperature is kept at 240–255 °C and the mould at 50–70 °C. Hot-runner manifold temperature is held at 250 °C with ±2 °C variation, because local overheating above 260 °C produces acrolein-type degradation products and yellowing in the SAN phase. A three-stage injection profile with initial injection velocity of 80 cm³/s, mid-fill velocity reduction to 50 cm³/s, and final packing velocity of 20 cm³/s prevents jetting and gate-area splay.

Formulation differs from capstock compounds in that flame-retardant and tracking-resistant additives are minimised to preserve ultraviolet stability. Unfilled ASA typically shows a comparative tracking index above 600 V when tested under IEC 60112 with solution A; the addition of more than 5 wt% calcium carbonate or talc reduces the index below 400 V and is therefore avoided in exposed terminal covers. Glow-wire testing to IEC 60695-2-11 at 650 °C for a 1.5 mm wall thickness is used in IEC 62208 empty enclosure certification. Because ASA is not inherently UV-transparent, pigmented dark grey enclosures can operate in direct sunlight with ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0 after 3000 h under ISO 4892-2, provided the pigment dispersion remains finer than 40 µm maximum agglomerate size.

In ride-on mower engine cowlings, high-shear dispersion of UV-stabilized masterbatch is performed on a 40 mm corotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D of 40:1 and a strand pelletizer; outdoor power equipment housings require a uniform stabilizer distribution that survives injection moulding at high screw recovery rates. KUMHO® ASA XC280G is compounded with 0.4–0.8 wt% oligomeric HALS and 0.2–0.6 wt% benzotriazole before moulding. If black cowlings are specified, 0.5–1.0 wt% of high-purity furnace black is introduced through a side feeder at barrel zone 6 to minimise heat history. Moulding is performed on a 1250-kN clamp press with an accumulator-assisted injection unit to reach 300 mm/s screw advance at a shot volume of 650 cm³. The tool has a textured cavity surface with 25 µm average roughness to hide moulded-in pigment streaks; this requires filling at the upper end of the melt-temperature window, 245–260 °C, and holding pressure of 50–70 MPa to replicate texture without sink marks. Gas-assist is not used around the fuel-tank recess because internal gas channels can collapse the ASA skin and create a visible shadow on textured dark surfaces.

End-product validation for ride-on mower engine cowlings includes UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm and low-temperature impact per ASTM D5420 at −30 °C. The acrylate rubber phase in ASA retains ductile failure at low temperature, but thin ribs below 0.8 mm can turn brittle if melt temperature exceeds 265 °C; therefore the hot-runner nozzle temperature is limited to 255 °C and regrind content is held at 20 % maximum. After 2000 h of xenon-arc exposure under ISO 4892-2, surface micro-cracking is assessed by 10× microscopy; visible cracks longer than 0.5 mm fail the OEM specification.

Marine Instrument Housings, Salt Fog, and the Polyacrylate Domain

Marine GPS and fish-finder housings are exposed to salt spray, direct UV in open cockpits, and intermittent sunscreen contact. KUMHO® ASA XC280G is selected for the rear housing and mounting bracket because the polyacrylate rubber phase is inherently resistant to hydrolysis in neutral salt solutions. Injection moulding uses a 600-kN press with a two-cavity tool; melt temperature is set at 235–250 °C and mould temperature at 50–60 °C. A 1.2 mm gasket groove around the display must be produced to ±0.05 mm flatness; therefore the part is cooled with sequential inlet water temperature of 20 °C for 12 s, then 50 °C for 8 s to minimise differential shrinkage between thick bosses and the thin bezel.

The housing compound is UV-stabilized with 0.3–0.8 wt% HALS, 0.2–0.5 wt% benzotriazole, and 0.3–0.6 wt% titanium dioxide for light-coloured surfaces; black housings replace TiO₂ with 0.5–1.0 wt% carbon black. Salt-fog exposure is run per ASTM B117 for 500 h with no visible blisters and tensile strength loss not exceeding 15 %. UV aging is tested under ISO 4892-3 using UVA-340 lamps for 2000 h; ΔE*ab ≤ 3.0 is targeted. Sealing performance of the gasket groove is validated after 1000 h in cyclic corrosion per ISO 11997-1, and mounting-boss pull-out force is measured after the same exposure to confirm that salt deposit formation does not reduce thread engagement strength below the design minimum.

When ASA XC280G Is Specified for Agricultural Roofline Components

Agricultural roofline components—ventilation louvers, end caps, and ridge covers for poultry and greenhouse structures—require a polymer that can survive ammonia-laden atmospheres, high humidity, and intermittent direct sunlight. In this application, extrusion of KUMHO® ASA XC280G sheet is performed on a 90 mm single-screw extruder with a coat-hanger die and a three-roll polish stack. The resin is dried to 0.05 wt% maximum moisture and processed at a melt temperature of 220–240 °C; roll-stack temperatures are set at 85 °C, 90 °C, and 75 °C to produce a 2.0–3.5 mm sheet with both surfaces hair-cell finished. Sheet is then thermoformed on a vacuum former at 165–185 °C using a plug-assist ratio of 0.45–0.55. The forming window is narrow because acrylic multipolymer caps applied for UV protection can delaminate if the surface temperature exceeds 190 °C.

The compound for this roofline sheet contains 8–12 phr rutile TiO₂ and 0.3–0.8 phr HALS to maintain opacity and surface integrity. Because ammonia exposure may act as an environmental stress-cracking agent on the SAN phase, formed parts are annealed at 80 °C for 2 h after thermoforming to relieve residual stress near clamp holes and knockouts. Disinfection protocols in livestock housing commonly use 0.5 % quaternary ammonium solutions; the formed parts are wiped down daily, and stress-cracking resistance is validated by immersion in a 0.5 % quaternary ammonium solution at 50 °C for 72 h per ASTM D543. Published data for the specific combination of this ASA grade and ammonia vapour under poultry-house conditions is limited; therefore field validation includes 30 days of exposure at 50 ppm ammonia and 35 °C before releasing the roofline specification.

Finished parts are tested for notched impact after thermoforming per ISO 179-1/1eA and after weathering per ISO 4892-2. Because the sheet is not painted, colour retention is checked under ISO 105-A02 against grayscale grade 4 after 3000 h of xenon-arc exposure. The operational boundary is that solvent-based acrylic lacquer should not be applied to formed ASA; aromatic hydrocarbons in some lacquers swell the SAN phase and can produce micro-crazing at clamp holes within 72 h.
