Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC230G

In exterior mirror housing and non-painted body trim moulding, KUMHO® ASA XC230G is specified as the pelletized base resin where the OEM drawing deletes paint and retains weatherable pigment classifications. The compounding recipe uses KUMHO® ASA XC230G as the balance; additives are 1–2 wt% custom-matched weathering masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% acrylic processing aid, and 0.1–0.3 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer package. The masterbatch carrier must be styrenics-compatible to prevent delamination at gate vestiges and around boss features. Compliance documentation references ECE Regulation 46 and FMVSS 111 for rearview mirror impact and driver vision, ELV Directive 2000/53/EC and REACH SVHC screening for material traceability, and weathering acceptance via SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2 with OE-defined ΔE*ab and Δb* limits. Downstream manufacturing uses reciprocating-screw injection moulding with a barrel L/D of 20:1, compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1, melt temperature 230–250°C, and mould temperature 40–80°C; clamp force is set between 2,000 and 4,500 kN depending on projected area and cavity count. Production bottlenecks include shore-to-shore gloss mismatch in multicavity tools and gate blush on textured surfaces; sequential valve gating and oil-heated tool zones narrow gloss variation. Terminal products include exterior mirror housing shells and covers, cowl vent grilles, A-pillar appliqués, roof ditch mouldings, and tailgate trim covers.

What Happens When Unpainted ASA Replaces Painted ABS in Outdoor Electrical Enclosures?

Outdoor electrical enclosure programs for photovoltaic inverters, telecommunications cabinets, and EV charging infrastructure impose UV, thermal cycling, and impact requirements without post-mould painting. KUMHO® ASA XC230G is the base resin used as the balance; additives are 2–4 wt% UV-stabilizer masterbatch, 0.5–1.5 wt% flow-modified styrenic processing concentrate, and 1–3 wt% color concentrate. Regrind may replace up to 20 wt% of virgin base resin, provided melt flow index deviation remains below 10% and notched Izod scatter stays within OEM control limits. Relevant compliance clauses include UL 746C for outdoor suitability and f1 recognition, IEC 62208 and IEC 60529 for enclosure mechanical impact and ingress protection, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for restricted substance documentation, and UL 94 HB as the minimum fire performance reference in end-product standards. The process is thick-wall injection moulding with sequential valve-gate control; barrel temperatures are set 230–250°C, mould temperatures 50–70°C, and clamp force from 2,500 to 5,000 kN. Screw back pressure is maintained 5–10 bar, and packing pressure 60–80 MPa is held until gate freeze to control sink mark formation at bosses and rib intersections. Field-reported failure modes include post-mould insert cracking when brass inserts are placed without preheating and surface gloss drift after 2,000 h xenon-arc exposure under UL 746C. Terminal products include solar inverter enclosures, telecom enclosure covers, junction boxes, and outdoor EV charging station front panels.

When coextruded window and door lineal manufacture uses ASA capstock to protect PVC or cellular PVC substrates from direct weathering, the capstock layer must resist color change and chalking without compromising profile dimensional stability. KUMHO® ASA XC230G constitutes the balance of the capstock compound; additives are 2–4 wt% inorganic or organic color concentrate and 1–2 wt% acrylic process aid. The capstock layer is controlled at 0.15–0.30 mm thickness over the substrate. The compliance framework for this sector includes RAL GZ 716 for PVC window profile quality, EN 12608 for unplasticized PVC profile dimensional and weathering requirements, and ISO 4892-2 with ASTM D2244 for calculating ΔE*ab and color retention; Florida exposure per ASTM G7 is often referenced for 10-year outdoor validation. The downstream process is coextrusion using a single-screw extruder of 30:1–32:1 L/D with a barrier screw and Maddock mixing section, melt temperature 220–240°C, adapter and die temperature 220–235°C, and calibrators held at 15–20°C; line speed ranges from 2 to 6 m/min depending on profile geometry. Die lip build-up from color concentrate decomposition is a known production issue; purging with acrylic-based purge compound is required between color changes. Finished profile articles include window and door main frame profiles, sash profiles, fence and railing caps, and outdoor trim boards.

Marine and RV Component Weathering: Salt Spray, UV, and Impact Thresholds

Marine and RV exterior components are produced from KUMHO® ASA XC230G after paint-grade ABS and glass-fiber-filled polypropylene exhibit field failures from surface fibrillation, color fade, and stress whitening at fastening points. The compound uses KUMHO® ASA XC230G as the balance; additives are 1.5–2.5 wt% marine-grade UV masterbatch and 0.2–0.4 wt% antioxidant, with up to 15 wt% in-house regrind replacing virgin base if the melt flow index remains within ±10% of virgin value and notched Izod impact per ASTM D256 at −20°C remains above OEM minimum. Compliance input includes ASTM D256 or ISO 180 notched Izod impact at 23°C and −20°C, ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc weathering, ASTM B117 neutral salt spray for metallic insert compatibility, and ABYC recommended practices for plastic deck hardware where applicable. Downstream production is split between sheet extrusion plus vacuum forming and injection moulding. Extruded sheet of 0.8–6 mm gauge is heated to 160–190°C surface temperature and formed over epoxy or aluminum molds at 50–70°C; injection moulding conditions are 230–250°C melt, 40–70°C mould, and clamp force 2,000–4,500 kN. Differential gloss between sheet-formed and injection-moulded parts within the same assembly is a documented appearance problem; single source grain depth and mold texture are aligned by using VDI 3400 surface roughness references. Terminal products include pontoon console panels, deck hatch frames, RV exterior vent covers, and equipment cowlings.

Field Vibration and Long-Term UV Exposure Define the Processing Window for Riding Mower Hoods

For riding mower hoods and agricultural equipment housings, the material specification must satisfy repeated impact, engine vibration, and multi-season UV exposure without paint. KUMHO® ASA XC230G is the base resin used as the balance; additives are 3–6 wt% high-load color masterbatch, 0.3–0.7 wt% UV and heat stabilizer concentrate, and 1–2 wt% internal lubricant or processing aid. Mineral reinforcement is omitted unless the OEM drawing specifies a filled variant; tensile properties are documented per ASTM D638-14. Compliance is driven by ISO 4892-1 for weathering exposure framework, ASTM D638-14 tensile property documentation, ISO 179-1 notched Charpy impact, and ISO 8256 for biaxial impact behavior; UL 94 HB is cited when plastic fuel spillage exposure is evaluated. Production uses multi-cavity injection moulding with hot runners, barrel temperature 230–250°C, mould temperature 50–70°C, and clamp force between 3,000 and 6,000 kN for large hood tools. Vibration-induced stress cracking at mounting bosses is a documented field failure; trials use gas-assist or low-pressure structural foam variants to reduce sink and increase section stiffness. End-product geometries comprise riding mower hoods, tractor fender extensions, portable generator covers, and utility vehicle storage covers.

Chlorinated pool and spa environments create simultaneous oxidative and hydrolytic stress on exterior housings, ladder treads, and cabinet panels. KUMHO® ASA XC230G is the base resin used as the balance; additives are 2–4 wt% UV stabilizer concentrate, 1–2 wt% acrylic processing aid, and optional 5–10 wt% barium sulfate masterbatch replacing an equivalent portion of base resin where mass aesthetics and sink resistance are required. Compliance documentation for pool service includes NSF/ANSI 50 for components in intermittent pool water contact, ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure, ASTM G154 for fluorescent UV screening, and ASTM D638-14 for tensile property verification after 1,000 h accelerated aging. Published multi-year weathering data for this specific grade in chlorinated pool service is limited; each formulation should be screened per ISO 4892-2 before production release. Processing is injection moulding for structural housings and sheet extrusion for flat panels; melt temperature is 230–250°C, mould temperature 40–70°C, and drying must maintain pellet moisture below 0.02% when ambient RH exceeds 60%. Main operational boundaries are to avoid contact with concentrated chlorinated solvents and strong oxidizing acids prior to installation; the grade is not intended for continuous immersion in potable water lines. Moulded and extruded articles include pool filter housings, spa cabinet panels, strainer lids, and skimmer covers.
