Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC230-NC

In exterior low-gloss black trim programmes for passenger vehicle platforms, KUMHO ASA XC230-NC is processed as a 100.0 wt% base resin without polymer blending, while a separately dosed carbon black masterbatch is added at 2.0–3.5 wt% of total compound weight to reach OEM grain-specified colour coordinates. The compliance set includes the end-of-life vehicle directive 2000/53/EC, REACH Regulation 1907/2006, and weathering validation under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 with 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm, 102 min dry / 18 min water spray, black standard temperature 65 ± 3 °C. Lot-specific tensile yield of moulded specimens is monitored under ISO 527-2 type 1A, and incoming melt mass-flow rate is checked under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C / 10 kg; OEM submissions rely on certificate-of-analysis values rather than typical data-plate figures. Where low-gloss grained surfaces are specified, gloss and colour retention are evaluated after 1,500–2,000 h of ISO 4892-2 exposure, with acceptance limits defined by the platform engineer rather than by a universal standard.

Before injection moulding, the granular feedstock is dried in a closed-loop desiccant dryer at 80 ± 5 °C for 3–4 h with inlet air dew point −30 °C or lower, targeting residual moisture ≤0.02 wt%. A general-purpose reciprocating screw with L/D 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.5:1–3.0:1 is used, with barrel zone settings from feed to nozzle of 210–230 °C, 230–250 °C, 240–260 °C, and nozzle 235–255 °C; melt temperature measured at the nozzle is maintained within 240–255 °C. Mould temperature is biased to 40–60 °C for grain reproduction and low gloss, but this lower thermal reserve reduces weld line strength at mirror mounting bosses and cowl edge attachments; gate, runner, and cavity layout therefore require sequential valve-gate control where component width exceeds 300 mm. Injection velocity is held between 20–45 mm/s; above this band, short gate land lengths below 0.5 mm show jetting on Class A surfaces; below this band, sink at rib-to-shell transitions becomes visible after paint or clear-coat operations.

Production-scale behaviour on multi-cavity hot-runner tools indicates that thermal-gate open nozzles produce stringing and gate blush when the melt cushion falls below 2 mm, and valve-gate systems require sequenced opening delays of 0.5–1.0 s to prevent hesitation lines in long-flow cowl covers. Melt residence time above 12 min at 250 °C or barrel temperatures above 270 °C induce yellowing and molecular weight degradation in natural-grade ASA; purging with low-viscosity acrylic or general-purpose ABS is performed after 45–60 min of interruption to avoid carbonized material in the melt stream. Internal regrind from sprues, runners, and rejected low-gloss parts is limited to 20 wt% in exterior programmes because repeated heat history shifts notched impact retention under ISO 179-1/1eA and increases surface gloss variability in grain bottoms. Carbon black masterbatch dispersion is monitored by Delta E after 500 h of ISO 4892-2; agglomerates above 30 μm produce visible white specks on black grain surfaces even when the masterbatch addition ratio is within tolerance.

Terminal component types in this application band are exterior rearview mirror housings, windshield cowl covers, front grille surrounds, B-pillar appliqués, tailgate handle bezels, and roof antenna covers; the grade is specified where unpainted black or dark grey surfaces must survive outdoor UV and stone-chip exposure without the multi-layer paint stacks required on ABS.

Why does outdoor electrical enclosure moulding shift from ABS to ASA at UV exposures above 300 MJ/m²?

Outdoor junction boxes and telemetry enclosure covers produced from ABS require a UV-resistant paint or co-extruded cap to meet multi-year exposure warranties; once the installed UV load exceeds 300 MJ/m² annual solar radiation, paint adhesion and impact retention failures occur on ribs and screw bosses. KUMHO ASA XC230-NC is processed as a 100.0 wt% neat base resin for non-flame-retardant outdoor enclosures, with grey or black masterbatch added at 1.0–2.0 wt% when colour is not pre-compounded; carbon black or TiO2-based concentrates are used because of their UV absorption or reflection characteristics. Compliance is assessed under UL 746C for outdoor suitability, including ultraviolet-light exposure followed by water exposure and then flammability/mechanical evaluation, with UL 94 HB as the minimum combustion class for non-structural electrical housings. End-use enclosure standards include IEC 61439-1 for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies and IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, where impact, thermal stability, and protection degree are evaluated on the finished assembly.

Processing on 350–650 t toggle-clamp or hydraulic injection machines uses shot volumes from 30–70% of barrel capacity and a general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1; barrel temperatures are set at 220–255 °C from feed to nozzle and mould temperature is held at 50–80 °C. Wall thickness is normally 2.0–3.5 mm to allow gate freeze after a hold pressure of 50–70 MPa; screw speed is limited to 40–80 min^-1 and back pressure to 0.5–1.5 MPa to avoid frictional heating that can cause yellowing in natural parts. For enclosure covers with peripheral gasket grooves, venting at the end-fill point is deepened to 0.02–0.03 mm and vacuum-assisted mold venting is applied because ASA melt fronts trap volatile degradation products at the knit line when the tool is not adequately vented; production lines report silver streaking due to residual moisture above 0.03 wt% and jetting at direct sprue gates when the screw decompression distance exceeds 3 mm.

The unmodified grade must not be used where UL 94 V-0, 5VA, or glow-wire ignition requirements above 960 °C are specified; published data for flame-retardant-modified KUMHO ASA XC230-NC in electrical enclosure applications is limited, and compounders must validate a custom FR formulation against UL 746C after modification. Internal regrind is limited to 20 wt% for UV-stated parts because repeated heat history at 250 °C shifts impact retention under ISO 179-1/1eU and accelerates chalking of dark grey surfaces after 1,000 h of ISO 4892-2. Terminal products are outdoor meter boxes, telecom splice enclosures, solar combiner boxes, HVAC control panel covers, pump control housings, and antenna base covers.

Where battery-powered grass trimmers and leaf blowers transfer impact loads to central housing shells, KUMHO ASA XC230-NC is processed with a colour masterbatch at 1.5–3.0 wt% and, when prolonged UV exposure in commercial landscaping is specified, an additional hindered amine light stabilizer concentrate at 0.5–1.5 wt% may be used even though the ASA backbone already provides outdoor retention. Compliance for hand-held motor-operated tools uses IEC 62841-1 for safety, while household outdoor equipment may also be assessed under EN 60335-1; material weathering is validated under ISO 4892-2 with 1,000–1,500 h exposure depending on the tool brand warranty. The injection moulding process uses two-plate cold-runner tools with film gates on the visible surface and wall stock of 1.8–3.0 mm; mould temperature is kept at 50–70 °C, and packing pressure is set to 60–80 MPa for 3–6 s after fill to suppress sink marks at thick screw bosses and motor mounting pads. Ketone, aromatic hydrocarbon, and chlorinated solvent contact is not recommended; solvent wiping with MEK or toluene on blackout surfaces produces stress cracking at ribs. Terminal parts are grass trimmer motor housings, leaf blower fan shrouds, hedge trimmer bodies, battery pack covers for outdoor power equipment, and wheel covers for electric mowers.

Injection-moulded ASA in roof-edge flashing, vent cover and external wall cap components

Building components mounted on dark roofing membranes reach surface temperatures that distort unpainted ABS and degrade painted polypropylene. KUMHO ASA XC230-NC is used at 100.0 wt% neat with colour concentrate at 0.8–1.5 wt% for dark brown and grey profiles; the acrylate-modified ASA backbone maintains gloss and colour better than ABS under ISO 4892-2 exposures above 1,500 h. Impact resistance is assessed by ISO 179-1/1eU, and surface flame spread of the final assembly is assessed under EN 13501-1 only at assembly level; the unfilled grade is not specified for structural load-bearing elements.

Moulding uses higher mould temperature 60–80 °C and slow injection speed 10–25 mm/s to reduce moulded-in stress in long, thin vent flaps with length/wall ratios above 150:1. Holding pressure is set at 40–60 MPa with gate freeze verified by short-shot progression; sink marks at hinge points are controlled by local gas-counterpressure or by redesigning rib thickness to 50–60% of adjacent wall. Terminal products are roof vent covers, roof-edge flashing caps, external wall cap terminals, cable entry covers, and soffit access panels.

In pools and marine environments where oxidative sanitizer contact creates microcracking in painted ABS components, KUMHO ASA XC230-NC is selected because the acrylate rubber phase resists UV embrittlement and surface bleaching better than conventional polybutadiene-modified ABS. White spa cabinet parts are compounded at 1.5–2.5 wt% titanium dioxide concentrate, and regrind is limited to 10–15 wt% to avoid streaking in high-gloss surfaces; published data for XC230-NC under long-term saltwater immersion is limited, so load-bearing parts are validated by in-service testing rather than laboratory immersion alone. Compliance for weathering uses ISO 4892-2 for sunlight and ISO 4892-3 for window-glass-filtered UV; condensate exposure is assessed under ISO 6270-2. Injection moulding is performed on 250–450 t machines with polished cavity surfaces to produce high-gloss parts; mould temperature is 50–70 °C, melt temperature 240–260 °C, and screw speed 40–60 min^-1. Terminal products are spa cabinet panels, pool pump motor covers, marine instrument panel bezels, above-waterline hatch covers, and outdoor shower control housings.
