Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC230
Predrying KUMHO ASA XC230 for unpainted exterior mirror housings and cowl-vent grilles is set at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point below -20 °C; residual moisture above 0.05% by weight produces gate splay and loss of Class A surface. The injection moulding conversion uses a general-purpose screw with 20:1–25:1 L/D, a screw diameter above 45 mm, and a back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa. Barrel temperature zones are profiled from 220–230 °C in the feed zone to 250–260 °C in the metering zone, with the nozzle set at 245–255 °C; melt temperature measured by infrared probe is maintained at 240–260 °C. Above 265 °C, surface gloss loss and yellowing become measurable on moulded plaques examined under ASTM D2244-21. Mould temperature is held at 60–80 °C with turbulent water circulation, and clamp force is calculated at 3.0–4.0 kN/cm² of projected part area. Unpainted black specifications use 1.5–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch in an ASA carrier; the masterbatch is predried under the same desiccant conditions because moisture in the carrier produces silver streaks at the gate. Textured exterior surfaces are moulded with VDI 3400 grain depths from 27 to 36; lower grain depths expose knit lines at boss back-sides. The terminal parts are exterior mirror housings, cowl-vent grilles, and hatch garnish trims. Weathering qualification is per SAE J2527, with OEM programmes commonly requiring ΔE*ab not exceeding 3.0 after 3000 kJ/m² radiant exposure, and post-aging impact evaluated by ISO 179-1:2020.

Capstock Layer Coextrusion on Rigid PVC Window Lineals

In capstock coextrusion, KUMHO ASA XC230 is fed through a dedicated 35–45 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D and a vacuum vent, while the rigid PVC substrate is processed in a separate main extruder. The ASA layer is dried at 80 °C for 2–3 h to a moisture content below 0.05%; the PVC compound is stabilised with 3–5 phr organotin or calcium-zinc stabiliser. The two melts meet in a feedblock or coextrusion die with the ASA cap layer thickness controlled between 120 μm and 250 μm. Melt temperature for the ASA side is maintained at 205–225 °C, while the die body is set at 190–210 °C. This window is maintained because heat transfer from the ASA layer to the PVC substrate above 200 °C accelerates dehydrochlorination and can generate hydrochloric acid attack on calibrator surfaces. Pressure ahead of a 60/80/100 mesh screen pack is kept below 28 MPa to control shear heating. Haul-off speed for standard window lineals is set between 1.5 m/min and 2.5 m/min. Light-coloured capstock is pigmented with 2–3 wt% titanium dioxide concentrate in an ASA/SAN carrier; dispersion quality is inspected on extruded tape at 100× magnification because agglomerates reduce impact resistance at the capstock-PVC interface. The finished product is a weather-resistant window or door profile capstock. Weathering is assessed according to ISO 16871:2003 and, where applicable, RAL-GZ 716/2. Direct melt blending of XC230 with PVC is not recommended because of viscosity mismatch and HCl release at processing temperatures; the two polymers should only meet in a coextrusion feedblock.

Can ASA XC230 Hold Colour Stability in Outdoor EV Enclosure Housings?

Outdoor EV charging enclosure housings moulded from KUMHO ASA XC230 require separate evaluation for UL 746C outdoor suitability and any regional electrical equipment standard. The polymer is normally specified in wall thicknesses from 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm; flexural modulus measured on dry-as-moulded specimens per ISO 178:2019 is used to determine rib spacing and mounting boss geometry. For an enclosure body with a mass of 1.2 kg, clamp force is calculated at 4.0 kN/cm² of projected area, and a hot-runner valve gate above 2.2 mm diameter is used to reduce shear heating. Mould temperature at 65–75 °C reduces weld-line depth at cable entry bosses. Weathering colour stability is assessed by mounting injection-moulded plaques in a xenon arc chamber per ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 with a black-standard temperature of 65 °C and chamber temperature of 38 °C. Outdoor enclosure programmes commonly require ΔE*ab below 3.0 after 2000–3000 kJ/m²; however, published data for this specific configuration of XC230 is limited and pre-production aged plaque retainers are required. If the end-use standard mandates a flame rating more stringent than UL 94 HB, XC230 is not inherently rated for V-0 use; flame-retardant masterbatch addition can be considered, but loading above 10–15 wt% typically reduces UV gloss retention and impact strength. The final product is an outdoor charging station shell, pillar-mounted or wall-mounted; chemical cleaning compatibility is limited to 5% neutral soap solution or 70% isopropanol/water, with methyl ethyl ketone and aromatic solvents excluded. Gasket seating surfaces are designed with a minimum 1.0 mm radius and 1.5° draft to avoid stress cracking around inserts.

Reducing Thermoform Crack Risk in Spa Shell Side Panels

Sheet extrusion for spa shell side panels and bath wall cap stock requires a monolayer ASA sheet thickness of 2.5–4.0 mm run through a T-die with a polished three-roll stack. The resin is pre-dried at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h; the extruder uses a barrier screw with 28:1 L/D and a screen pack no finer than 60 mesh to limit shear heating. Melt temperature is 200–230 °C; roll temperatures are set at 60–80 °C lower roll, 70–85 °C middle roll, and 60–75 °C upper roll to control curl and surface reproduction of hair-cell texture. Regrind of ASA edge trim below 15 wt% is permissible after drying, but batch-to-batch gloss variation increases above that level. Thermoforming is carried out with sheet surface temperature at 140–160 °C; below 135 °C the sheet may whiten on deep draws, and above 170 °C thermoforming sag becomes difficult to control on open tubs. Compliance for plastic plumbing fixtures is evaluated under ANSI Z124.1.2 and EN 14516; long-term chlorinated water exposure is generation-dependent. For spa water containing 1–3 mg/L free chlorine at 40 °C, the resin has greater hydrolysis resistance than ABS, but published data for XC230-specific thermoformed sheet is limited, and an installation-specific immersion test per ASTM D6284-20 is required. Finished parts are whirlpool tub side skirts, bath wall panels, and pool step front panels, often backed with rigid PVC or ABS substrate.

Roof-mounted HVAC louvres and condenser fan guards expose the polymer to continuous UV, rain pH of 3.5–8.0, and surface temperatures up to 85 °C on dark roofs. Injection moulding uses melt temperature 240–260 °C, mould temperature 70–80 °C, and holding pressure 55–75 MPa applied for 6–10 s. Wall thickness is maintained at 2.5–3.0 mm; ribs are specified at 0.6 of the nominal wall to avoid sink marks on visible faces. Weathering performance is monitored using ASTM G154-16 cycle 1 with 8 h UVB-313 at 60 °C and 4 h condensation at 50 °C, plus periodic colour measurement according to ASTM D2244-21. Black components are compounded with 1.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch; the masterbatch is selected for low dusting to avoid deposit on fan blades during field operation. Mechanical retention after 1000 h of accelerated weathering is compared to as-moulded ASTM D638-14 tensile strength and ISO 178:2019 flexural modulus; a drop after aging of more than 20% in flexural modulus triggers review of moulded-in stress and gate size. The terminal product is a louvre bank or fan guard for commercial rooftop units; no paint or clearcoat is applied. For high-temperature roof exposure above 80 °C, insert torque retention is validated with a pull-out test at 85 °C after 24 h recovery.

When ASA XC230 Replaces Painted ABS in Garden Equipment Cowlings

When painted ABS is replaced by KUMHO ASA XC230 in lawn-tractor hoods and snowthrower cowlings, the injection moulding process is adjusted because ASA shows different melt elasticity and lower mould shrinkage than ABS; mould shrinkage is recorded per ISO 294-4:2018. The granulate is pre-dried to 0.05% moisture at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h; barrel temperature is kept between 230 °C and 255 °C, and mould temperature is set at 60–70 °C to develop a low-gloss, textured surface. The gate size should be 60–80% of wall thickness, and wall sections are kept at 2.0–2.5 mm to maintain impact resistance in cold-weather use; notched Charpy impact at -10 °C is evaluated according to ISO 179-1:2020. Colour stability without paint is tested under ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1; OEM requirements for garden equipment commonly permit ΔE*ab not exceeding 2.5 after 1500 kJ/m². Formulation uses a weather-resistant pigment package, typically 1.0–2.0 wt% carbon black for dark grey or 1.5–2.5 wt% TiO₂ plus 0.3–0.8 wt% iron oxide for earth-tone colours; colour masterbatch is pre-dried separately. Post-mould shrinkage of 0.5–0.8% after 24 h must be accommodated in mounting hole spacing; if the part is assembled over a metal frame, slotted holes with 1.5 mm radial clearance reduce buckling after outdoor thermal cycling. The finished part is a cowling, hood, or fender that can be recycled as unfilled ASA regrind at 10–15% without repainting.

Extruded ASA XC230 profiles for recreational vehicle side skirts and trim rails are run at 210–225 °C melt temperature and vacuum calibrated through a dry calibration tank at 20–30 °C; line speed is adjusted to maintain a wall thickness of 1.8–2.5 mm. For dark colours, the extruder is purged with a low-MFI acrylic purging compound before shutdown to remove carbon black residues that would contaminate lighter colour changes. Weathering specifications for RV exterior trim often reference SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2:2013; colour shift is measured on extruded cutouts after 2500 kJ/m² exposure. Chemical resistance for road splash is assessed with ASTM D543-20 using 1% sodium chloride solution, diesel fuel, and 5% acetic acid; the resin should show no visible cracking after 72 h immersion at room temperature. Published data for XC230 in marine instrument panel bezels exposed to salt spray and UV is limited; optical retention after 1000 h salt spray per ISO 9227:2017 and 1000 h xenon arc per ISO 4892-2 is required before production. Mounting features are machined or punched only after stress-relief conditioning at 80 °C for 2 h, which reduces drilling-induced microcracks. The terminal product is an unpainted trim rail, side skirt, or dash bezel.
