Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC200FR

KUMHO® ASA XC200FR is specified where outdoor weathering, flame-retardant behavior at nominal walls between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, and styrenic processing economies intersect. The downstream sectors below are restricted to established applications for ASA-based, ignition-resistant grades. Product certificate values and grade-specific data override all generalized processing windows stated in this document.

Utility Metering and Distribution Enclosures Under Rain-Shedding and UV Load

Utility meter enclosures and outdoor distribution boxes are molded from KUMHO® ASA XC200FR in sections where polycarbonate-based flame-retardant grades fail by surface microcracking after 2,000 h of xenon arc exposure according to ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1. Parts are evaluated under IEC 62208:2023 for empty enclosures for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, with mechanical impact after conditioning per IEC 60068-2-75 at -25°C. Flame performance is verified at the thinnest wall, not at a standard plaque; a 2.0 mm main wall connected to a 1.5 mm boss must be classified at 1.5 mm. The resin is processed neat for load-bearing corner bosses and hinge brackets. Regrind generated from sprues and rejects is incorporated at a maximum of 25 wt% into the virgin XC200FR stream for walls at or above 2.0 mm; for enclosures with a 1.5 mm nominal section, the regrind fraction is reduced to 15 wt% or eliminated because the ignition-resistance margin narrows. Color is introduced with an ASA-carrier masterbatch at 2–4 wt%; use of ABS carrier masterbatch causes delamination at gate-adjacent weld lines. The drying sequence uses a desiccant dryer at 80–85°C with a dew point below -40°C for 3–4 h to achieve moisture at or below 0.05% measured by ISO 15512:2019. The melt is held at 230–250°C at the nozzle; residence time is kept below 6 min at temperatures above 245°C to avoid yellowing of the flame-retardant package. Injection molding is conducted on a 20:1 to 25:1 L/D single-flighted screw with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.8:1 and a ring check valve. Back pressure is set at 3–6 bar hydraulic, with screw surface speed held between 0.3 m/s and 0.5 m/s to avoid high-shear heat generation. Hot runner drops are sized at 1.2 mm or larger, because smaller gates cause shear-induced streaks around openings. Parting-line vents are polished to 0.02–0.03 mm depth and cleaned every 4,000 cycles; flame-retardant volatiles can plate out on chilled mold surfaces. Terminal products in this sector include ANSI meter sockets, utility termination boxes, circuit-breaker enclosures, surge-protection boxes, and outdoor disconnect covers. The typical bottleneck is nonuniform wall shrinkage around brass thread inserts; inserts are preheated to 80°C by frictional contact rather than a exposed surface torch to avoid local degradation of the ASA matrix.

Can a 25 wt% Regrind Fraction Maintain UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm Nominal Wall?

In outdoor electric vehicle charging infrastructure, AC and DC supply equipment housings are injection molded with KUMHO® ASA XC200FR for outdoor-facing shell components because the combination of hydrolytic stability, UV resistance, and flame-retardant performance reduces the need for post-molding painting. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 61851-1:2017 for electric vehicle conductive charging systems, with flame-retardant requirements typically drawn from UL 94 V-0 at the thinnest wall section in North American supply chains and from IEC 60695-11-10:2013 in global markets. Outdoor suitability is assessed under UL 746C with f1 or f2 exposure ratings, supported by ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 or ASTM G155 Cycle 1. The processing question is the allowable fraction of reprocessed material. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; however, industrial practice in styrenic flame-retardant systems restricts in-house regrind to 20–25 wt% for walls at or above 2.0 mm. At a 1.5 mm nominal wall, the same regrind fraction shifts the burning classification in some cavity locations because flow-induced orientation redistributes the flame-retardant package near the surface. The dilution effect is non-linear; thin sections above a hot runner tunnel show variable afterglow. The resin is therefore processed neat for 1.5 mm wall-box front fascias, with regrind limited to 10 wt% only in hidden internal brackets. Injection molding cells for charger housings typically use clamp force of 6,000–12,000 kN, depending on projected area, and hot runner systems with sequential valve gates to reduce visible weld lines. The screw has a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D and a constant taper; screw speed is not permitted to exceed 120 rpm at 60 mm diameter because the flame-retardant package suffers from excessive shear heating. Nozzle temperature is held at 235–245°C; hot runner manifold temperature is kept within 5°C of the nozzle setting. Mold surface temperature is controlled at 60–80°C with pressurized water units, not oil, to avoid surface gloss variation. Vents at the end-of-fill are cleaned every 3,000 cycles; flame-retardant migration produces a white deposit at the parting line after sustained operation. This deposit is acidic in humid environments and must not be allowed to accumulate on clamp platens. For terminal products such as AC wall-box enclosures, DC fast-charge side skirts, cable holsters, and charge controller covers, dimensional stability at 85°C and low-temperature impact at -30°C are controlled by maintaining melt constant; a 10°C melt drop increases internal stress at structural ribs. Batch-to-batch color variation is minimized by calibrating the masterbatch feeder at 1.5–2.5 wt% with an ASA carrier; free-fall dosing of powder additives is avoided due to separation in the material hopper.

When a PV Junction Box Lid Is Welded to a Flame-Retarded ASA Base Without a Gasket

When photovoltaic junction boxes and inverter top covers are molded from KUMHO® ASA XC200FR, low-temperature toughness and resistance to yellowing under long-term ultraviolet exposure at altitudes up to 2,500 m are primary selection criteria. The compliance matrix includes IEC 62790:2020 for junction boxes for photovoltaic modules, IEC 60695-2-12:2021 for glow-wire flammability at 750°C on a 1.0 mm plaque, IEC 60112:2020 for comparative tracking index, and UL 746C for outdoor suitability. The resin is processed as a neat grade; inorganic filler is not added beyond 5 wt% talc for tightening torque stability, because higher filler loadings reduce the weld strength at the lid-to-base interface. Color masterbatch is limited to 2–3 wt% with an ASA carrier; black masterbatch with 30% carbon black is preferred for UV opacity. The downstream process is multi-stage: the base is injection molded at a 2.5–3.0 mm wall with a hot-runner edge gate, the lid is molded at 2.0–2.5 mm, and the two are joined by hot-plate welding without a sealing gasket. Welding uses a platen temperature of 210–230°C, a melt displacement of 0.2–0.4 mm, and a joining pressure from 0.10 MPa to 0.20 MPa, depending on part geometry; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so production settings are validated on sacrificial parts. The absence of a gasket means the welded seam is the environmental barrier; it must be continuous and free of carbonized particles from the flame-retardant package. Molders report that local overheating at the weld rib produces outgassing bubbles if the platen is left in contact for more than 12 s. The injection molding stage requires a screw with a 20:1 L/D and a non-return valve clearance maintained at 0.05–0.10 mm; leakage across the check ring causes short shots at the weld ribs. Pre-drying is identical to other scenarios: 80–85°C desiccant drying for 3–4 h to 0.05% maximum moisture. Terminal products include PV junction box bodies, lid covers, DC disconnector covers, and inverter top covers for string and micro inverters. In hot climates, continuous service temperature is checked against deflection temperature under load, and parts are annealed at 80°C for 2 h to release molded-in stress before terminal posts are inserted, preventing post-insertion cracking.

Below 1,000 m altitude in coastal building envelopes, KUMHO® ASA XC200FR is coextruded as a flame-retardant cap layer over a foamed or unfoamed ASA substrate for soffit panels and eave vents. Reaction-to-fire classification in the European Economic Area follows EN 13501-1:2018; North American installations are evaluated under ASTM E84-23a for flame spread and smoke developed index. The cap layer is processed at 100 wt% XC200FR with a thickness of 200–400 µm; this is not a paint or lacquer but a structural coextruded surface. Regrind is not permitted in the cap layer because contaminate particles cause surface craters and reduce weathering resistance. Core-layer regrind is limited to 25 wt%, and it is drawn from the user’s own coextrusion trim. The production line uses a 25:1 L/D barrier screw with vacuum venting at -0.08 MPa; melt temperature at the adapter is held at 225–240°C and the sheet die lip is set at 235–245°C. Polishing roll temperatures are maintained at 80–90°C to control low-gloss surface development. Die-lip build-up from flame-retardant volatiles appears as black specks if the residence time exceeds 8 min; operators must purge with a styrenic purging compound at the end of each shift. Terminal products include exterior soffit panels, fascia covers, eave vent strips, and high-rise window trim elements that must pass local building-code ignitability provisions without secondary coating.

Where outdoor luminaire bodies require an IP66 seal and a high-char flame-retardant surface, injection molders select KUMHO® ASA XC200FR instead of painted aluminum when salt-spray testing covers 1,000 h per ISO 9227:2022. Compliance is assessed under IEC 60598-1:2020 for luminaire general requirements, UL 1598 for luminaires in North America, and IEC 60529 for ingress protection. The resin is processed neat for optical sealing surfaces and lens gasket grooves; no regrind is used in these critical surfaces because contamination causes air leaks at the IP66 seal. Black masterbatch is limited to 2 wt% with an ASA carrier; silicone external mold release is avoided because migration prevents potting compound adhesion inside driver compartments. The injection molding process uses a 2.0–2.5 mm nominal wall, mold surface temperatures of 50–70°C, and active tool venting at the sealing ribs; outgassing from the flame-retardant package can fog adjacent PC or PMMA lens surfaces if vents are not pulled at least every 2,000 cycles. Terminal products include floodlight housings, emergency exit luminaire shells, wall pack enclosures, and bollard light bodies with integral UV-resistant rear shells.

Managing Gate Freeze Time and Post-Molding Warp in Thin-Walled Disconnect Enclosures

For outdoor industrial control and disconnect switch enclosures, KUMHO® ASA XC200FR is gated through reverse-taper sprue bushings in molds with 1.2–1.5 mm nominal walls around cable entries but 3.0 mm around mounting bosses. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60947-1:2020 for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear general requirements, NEMA 250 for enclosure types in North America, and UL 94 V-0 for ignition classification at the thinnest section. Formulation practice for walls below 2.0 mm restricts regrind to 15 wt% because post-mold shrinkage anisotropy increases beyond 0.3% when reprocessed styrenic content drops the melt viscosity in the gate-frozen region. The process uses two-stage injection with gate freeze time from 8 s to 12 s; premature hold-pressure release produces sink marks at the rear boss cylinders. Differential mold temperature is set at 40°C on the fixed side and 70°C on the moving side to correct warp without extending cycle time beyond 55 s. Internal stress after 48 h at 23°C and 50% relative humidity is measured by ISO 294-4:2018 on a representative lot basis. Terminal products include outdoor disconnect switch covers, cam switch bodies, motor protection switch enclosures, and auxiliary contact housing bases used in agricultural and wastewater control circuits.
