Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC200

When Does Unpainted ASA Replace Coated ABS in Automotive Exterior Trim?

For exterior trim components that are mechanically fixed to vehicle bodies, KUMHO ASA XC200 is processed into high-gloss, low-gloss and grained surfaces without post-mould painting because the acrylic ester elastomer phase retains surface appearance after xenon-arc exposure under ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 conditions at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm and 65 °C black-panel temperature. The applicable compliance framework for automotive exterior unpainted parts includes SAE J2527:2017 for xenon-arc weathering, ISO 4892-2:2013, ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt flow verification, and the material restrictions of REACH 1907/2006 and EU Directive 2000/53/EC end-of-life vehicle requirements. Formulation addition ratios for dark unpainted trim typically fall within 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt% of a 50% carbon black masterbatch, 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt% of a hindered amine light stabilizer concentrate, and 0.05 wt% to 0.15 wt% of a mould release lubricant; the neat resin fraction remains above 95 wt%. Pre-drying is mandatory at 80 °C to 90 °C for 2 h to 4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point below −20 °C, and when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% the drying time is extended to the upper limit. Downstream production is carried out on injection moulding machines with general-purpose screws of 18:1 to 22:1 L/D ratio, clamp force between 250 t and 600 t, barrel temperatures profiled from rear to nozzle at 230 °C to 250 °C, hot-runner manifolds at 240 °C to 260 °C, and tool temperatures held between 40 °C and 80 °C. Mould filling speeds are set to avoid jetting at grained surfaces, and pack/hold pressure is maintained between 50 MPa and 80 MPa to minimize sink marks at bosses and clip towers; improper gate sizing below 0.8 mm depth has been observed to produce weld lines in mirror housing mounting lugs. Terminal finished product types include exterior mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar appliqués, tailgate trim covers, roof rail end caps, and wheel arch extensions.

If Coextruded ASA Capstock Must Maintain Gloss and Impact Across a 15-Year Building Envelope

In coextruded exterior building profiles, the top layer must retain colour, gloss and impact after continuous weathering while the substrate, frequently unplasticized PVC or foamed PVC, remains protected from UV oxidation. The governing compliance set includes ASTM D7251-22 for colour and appearance retention of plastic building products, ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc testing at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm, EN 20105-A02 grey-scale assessment of colour change, and the REACH 1907/2006 Article 33 declarable substance discipline. For capstock use, KUMHO ASA XC200 is typically formulated at 96.0 wt% to 99.0 wt% of the cap layer compound, with 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% acrylic process aid, 0.3 wt% to 1.5 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch for light colours, and 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% hindered phenol antioxidant. The capstock is coextruded through a single-screw extruder with 25:1 to 30:1 L/D and a vacuum vent, with barrel zones set between 200 °C and 230 °C and the die kept at 210 °C to 235 °C; the cap layer is deposited at 0.3 mm to 0.7 mm thickness onto the substrate. The critical threshold in production is the cap thickness tolerance: below 0.25 mm, UV transmittance through the ASA layer increases and substrate chalking can occur within 2 000 h of artificial weathering, while above 0.8 mm, shrinkage differential between the cap and substrate can produce longitudinal bowing. The stabilised processing window for cap extrusion is narrow; excursions above 235 °C produce visible surface haze and thermal yellowing, while melt temperatures below 205 °C cause melt fracture and incomplete layer encapsulation. Polishing-stack temperatures of 75 °C to 90 °C are used to preserve a low-ripple surface; line speeds typically range from 2 m/min to 8 m/min depending on profile complexity. Terminal finished product types include window and door profile capstock, siding panels, fascia boards, shutter profiles, gutter guards, and deck-board capping layers.

Outdoor electrical and telecommunication enclosures are manufactured from KUMHO ASA XC200 when the housing must withstand direct sunlight, rain, and wide surface-temperature cycling without the UV-induced chalking and embrittlement observed in general-purpose ABS. The compliance requirements for this application are dominated by UL 746C:2018 f1 outdoor suitability tests, UL 94 horizontal burn classification at HB, IEC 60529:1989+A2:2013 for ingress protection, IEC 62208:2023 for empty enclosure performance, RoHS 2011/65/EU with its Annex II restricted substances, and REACH 1907/2006. The formulation addition ratio for natural or coloured outdoor enclosures is 93.0 wt% to 97.0 wt% XC200, 2.0 wt% to 5.0 wt% UV-stabilized colour masterbatch, 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% processing aid, and 0.05 wt% to 0.15 wt% antistatic additive where dust adhesion on sealing surfaces must be reduced. Where a listed flame-retardant enclosure is required, XC200 is not appropriate as a neat resin because it does not meet UL 94 V-0; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and a dedicated flame-retardant ASA or PC/ASA grade should be substituted. Injection moulding of large flat housings is performed on hydraulic presses from 400 t to 800 t clamp force, with barrel zones of 230 °C to 250 °C, hot-runner manifolds at 240 °C to 260 °C, and mould temperatures of 50 °C to 70 °C. Sequential valve-gated hot runners are used to prevent weld lines at the corners; fill speed is reduced during the final 5 mm of flow to avoid gas traps, and hold pressure is maintained at 50 MPa to 70 MPa for 10 s to 20 s depending on wall thickness. Terminal finished product types include solar combiner boxes, fibre splice enclosures, weatherproof distribution boxes, outdoor control cabinets, and base-station radio housings.

Marine and RV Exterior Component Thermoforming With Low Water Absorption and Chalking Resistance

Heavy-gauge sheet extrusion followed by thermoforming converts KUMHO ASA XC200 into exterior components for recreational vehicles and marine service, where the material is selected because its acrylic ester rubber phase provides long-term resistance to both UV radiation and moisture-driven surface degradation. Compliance is anchored to ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc exposure at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm, ASTM D4329-21 UV-A fluorescent condensation cycles, ASTM D570-22 water absorption testing, and ISO 180:2023 notched Izod impact testing at low temperature. The formulation addition ratio for extruded sheet is 94.0 wt% to 98.0 wt% XC200, 1.0 wt% to 3.0 wt% weather-resistant colour masterbatch, 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% sheet-processing aid, and 0.1 wt% to 0.2 wt% hindered phenol antioxidant. Sheet extrusion uses a single-screw barrier extruder of 30:1 L/D with a melt pump, barrel temperatures of 220 °C to 240 °C, and chrome-polished chill rolls at 75 °C to 95 °C to produce a gloss-matte range without post-processing. The sheet is thermoformed after IR preheating to a surface temperature of 150 °C to 170 °C; aluminium tools are maintained at 60 °C to 80 °C, and forming is performed under vacuum or 0.4 MPa to 0.8 MPa pressure to capture rib and louvre detail. Edge trimming is completed on five-axis CNC routers to maintain sealing-surface flatness. Terminal finished product types include RV air-conditioner shrouds, marine dashboard instrument panels, hatch covers, deck access lids, battery box covers, and chartplotter housings.

For agricultural and turf equipment exterior panels, the production constraint is not only UV stability but also resistance to fertilizer dust, chlorinated water, and impact at low ambient temperatures. Components are moulded from KUMHO ASA XC200 in formulations containing 88.0 wt% to 95.0 wt% neat resin, 5.0 wt% to 12.0 wt% high-chroma OEM colour masterbatch, and 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt% combined lubricant and antioxidant package. The compliance framework relies on ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle 1 for UV aging, ASTM D256-23 Izod impact at −20 °C, ISO 180:2023 notched Charpy impact, RoHS 2011/65/EU with Annex II restrictions, and REACH 1907/2006 Article 33 communication requirements. In the downstream process, large injection moulding machines of 600 t to 1 200 t clamp force are equipped with sequential valve gating to fill long fender and hood side panels without visible knit lines; barrel temperatures are set from 235 °C to 255 °C, tool temperatures from 40 °C to 70 °C, and packing pressure from 60 MPa to 80 MPa. Thick bosses and mounting ribs are formed with gas-assist or water-assist equipment to reduce sink marks and warpage. Mineral filler additions above 10 wt% are not recommended for this grade because low-temperature impact retention decreases sharply; if stiffening is necessary, a 5 wt% mineral-filled masterbatch may be evaluated with retained-impact verification. Terminal finished product types include tractor hood side panels, fender extensions, turf equipment engine shrouds, irrigation controller housings, pump covers, and tank brackets.

Spa Shell Processing Eliminates Gel Coat and Requires Controlled Moisture Uptake

In spa and outdoor leisure equipment, KUMHO ASA XC200 sheet is used as the cosmetic surface layer because the polymer resists hydrolytic attack in warm chlorinated-water environments and does not require a gel coat to maintain gloss and colour. The material is specified against ISO 62:2008 water-absorption limits, ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc weathering, IEC 60335-2-60:2010 appliance safety for whirlpool baths, RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006. The formulation addition ratio for heavy-gauge sheet is 96.0 wt% to 98.0 wt% XC200, 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt% pearlescent or solid colour masterbatch, 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer, and 0.05 wt% to 0.15 wt% hindered phenol antioxidant. Downstream production begins with sheet extrusion through a 30:1 L/D barrier screw at 215 °C to 235 °C, followed by polishing rolls at 75 °C to 95 °C; sheets of 4.0 mm to 8.0 mm are then thermoformed at 150 °C to 170 °C surface temperature over water-cooled aluminium moulds. After trimming, the reverse side is abraded and backed with glass-reinforced polyester spray-up for structural stiffness; adhesion between ASA and polyester requires mechanical anchoring because the ASA surface is low-polarity. Terminal finished product types include spa shells, hydrotherapy tub surrounds, outdoor shower panels, pool equipment covers, and sauna door panels.
