Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC190

KUMHO® ASA XC190 is an acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate terpolymer used in injection molding and extrusion applications where outdoor ultraviolet exposure, low-temperature impact, and dimensional stability define fitness for use. The downstream sectors specified below are restricted to production-scale applications for which ASA terpolymers are established raw-material inputs: automotive exterior trim, building profile capstock, outdoor electrical and telecommunication enclosures, outdoor power equipment, and agricultural equipment fairings. Each scenario identifies the applicable compliance gate, the loading or dilution ratio, the downstream production process, and the terminal part classes. Processing boundaries common to all sectors include desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, and avoidance of melt temperatures above 280 °C, which degrade the acrylate ester phase and reduce weld-line strength.

Which Weatherability Benchmarks Govern ASA Exterior Mirror Housing Production?

Production records from automotive tier-supplier injection molding cells show that exterior mirror housings molded from ASA XC190 are processed on multi-cavity hot-runner tools with clamp forces between 1,800 kN and 3,000 kN, depending on projected cavity area and cold-runner volume. The barrel profile follows a rising thermal gradient from 230 °C at the feed throat to 255 °C at the nozzle, with mold temperature held between 50 °C and 70 °C to balance surface gloss against sink mark formation. Screw-back position is trimmed to a cushion of 3–5 mm to prevent splay and preserve consistent shot weight when sprues and runners are recycled. For Class A painted or metallic-finished housings, the formulation ratio is 100 wt% virgin ASA XC190; for non-appearance structural brackets and stiffeners, lot-matched regrind from the same production cell is incorporated at levels up to 20 wt%, provided the melt flow rate shift remains below 15 % relative to virgin resin.

The governing material requirement is not a single mandatory regulation but an OEM specification stack: exterior trim is evaluated under SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure or ISO 4892-2:2013 with humidity and spray cycles, followed by color measurement to ASTM D2244 and gloss retention to ISO 2813. Mirror housing validation also requires resistance to windshield washer fluid and car wash chemicals under ISO 175, and the mounting geometry of the finished assembly falls under FMVSS 111 without imposing a direct material weatherability threshold. Terminal parts produced in this segment include exterior mirror housings, A-, B-, and C-pillar appliqués, cowl vent grilles, and wiper arm caps, where low-temperature impact after weathering and resistance to aqueous chemical contact are the primary fitness-for-use criteria.

During coextrusion of PVC window lineals on a 65 mm counter-rotating conical twin-screw line, the ASA XC190 capstock is introduced through a satellite single-screw extruder at 210–230 °C melt temperature and deposited at a layer thickness of 0.5–1.0 mm over the rigid PVC substrate. The substrate barrel is maintained at 190–210 °C, and vacuum calibration in the first tank at −0.08 MPa to −0.06 MPa is followed by a secondary cooling stage before embossing. In this capstock application, the formulation ratio is 90–100 wt% ASA XC190 with 0–10 wt% color masterbatch or process aid; mineral filler above 2 wt% is avoided because it reduces surface gloss and promotes microcracking at the capstock-substrate interface after repeated thermal cycling. Production-scale failure modes observed on embossing calendar rolls include gloss variation when capstock melt strength drifts, which is corrected by adjusting satellite barrel temperature rather than increasing screw speed.

Profile systems are validated to EN 12608 for unplasticized PVC profile dimensional stability and impact, ASTM D4726 for rigid PVC exterior profile compounds, ISO 4892-3:2016 for UV exposure through window glass, and ISO 178 for flexural modulus. Terminal components include window lineals, siding lap joints, fascia panels, soffit boards, and architectural trim boards installed without painting, where the XC190 capstock supplies the weatherable surface and the PVC substrate supplies the linear thermal stability and lower system cost.

Outdoor Telecom Enclosure Shells, IP Sealing, and UL 94 Class Compliance

Because IEC 60529 ingress protection ratings are assigned to the finished enclosure assembly, the thermoplastic wall must supply dimensional stability across the gasket plane rather than serve as the sole moisture barrier. In outdoor telecom enclosures, ASA XC190 is injected at 100 wt% with a carbon black masterbatch at 2–3 wt% for opacity and ultraviolet absorption, although the acrylate ester phase in ASA provides weathering resistance without the rapid yellowing observed in unmodified ABS. Molding on a 1,000–1,500 kN clamp force vertical or horizontal machine with a vented barrel is typical, using melt temperatures between 240 °C and 260 °C and a mold temperature of 60–80 °C. The production bottleneck on multi-insert enclosures is warpage of the sealing flange; this is addressed through cooling-channel geometry and holding pressure rather than increasing mold temperature, which slows deflection but raises cycle time beyond the economical range.

The material is tested to UL 94 HB for flammability class, IEC 62208 for empty enclosure performance including mechanical impact and thermal aging, ISO 4892-2:2013 for xenon-arc weathering, and ASTM D638 for tensile yield. Enclosure manufacturers also perform salt fog exposure according to ISO 9227 when the housing contains cable glands or uncoated steel hinges. Terminal product classes include outdoor small-cell telecom housings, electricity metering boxes, CCTV camera bodies, and antenna radome covers where flame class and ultraviolet retention outweigh chemical resistance requirements.

When molding a large-surface lawn mower hood from ASA XC190, the injection unit operates with a 1,800–2,500 kN clamping force and a barrel profile of 235–255 °C, while the mold is held at 50–80 °C to reproduce grain texture on visible surfaces. The formulation is 100 wt% ASA XC190, with 2–4 wt% color masterbatch and post-industrial regrind from the same hood production cell limited to 15 wt%; higher regrind fractions reduce Gardner impact by more than 10 % in parts with wall thickness below 2.5 mm. Hot-runner valve gates on a 4-drop manifold are used for hoods with dimensions above 600 mm in length, and the switch-over position is set to 95 % fill volume to prevent jetting streaks at gate lands. Observed production defects include gasoline spill whitening and stress-cracking at the fuel filler recess when molders raise melt temperature above 260 °C to improve flow, which is avoided by reducing fill time rather than increasing temperature.

Compliance testing for walk-behind lawn mowers follows ISO 5395-1 for engine and electric drive safety, IEC 60335-1 where the hood encloses electrical components, ASTM D256 Izod for impact, and ISO 175 for resistance to gasoline, engine oil, and oxygenated fuel blends. Terminal parts in this segment include mower hoods, grass catcher lids, string trimmer guards, chainsaw chain covers, and snow blower discharge chutes, where stress cracking at fuel contact zones and low-temperature impact after outdoor storage are the limiting failure modes rather than ultraviolet color retention alone.

When Pesticide Contact and Direct Sunlight Exceed Automotive UV Loads

Exposure to both ultraviolet irradiance and pesticide spray residue creates a degradation environment in agricultural fairings that cannot be validated by single-factor weathering alone. For tractor roof panels, fender extensions, and sprayer shrouds, extruded ASA XC190 sheet is produced at 100 wt% virgin resin with colorant addition limited to 5 wt%; the sheet is extruded at a melt temperature of 230–245 °C and cooled to a surface temperature of 170–190 °C before vacuum forming. Sheet extrusion lines running this grade on 75 mm twin-screw machines exhibit edge-thickness variation below 0.2 mm when the polishing stack temperature is held within ±3 °C; out-of-range settings cause visible gauge bands that later become stress concentrators during forming. Pesticide contact is evaluated by immersion in emulsifiable concentrate dilutions according to ISO 175, and the same material is tested under ISO 4892-2:2013 for xenon-arc weathering, ISO 179-1 for Charpy impact at −30 °C, and ASTM D638 for tensile yield retention.

Production-scale vacuum forming of ASA XC190 sheet requires close control of sheet surface temperature; if the sheet is clamped at surface temperatures below 170 °C, corner thinning exceeds 25 % and causes stress whitening after outdoor exposure. Above 190 °C, uncontrolled sag and webbing on male tools become the dominant failure mode. Vacuum forming tooling made from temperature-controlled aluminum with 0.8 mm vacuum hole diameters in high-draw areas is used to maintain wall stock above the minimum required by impact testing. Terminal product types include tractor roof shells, fender extensions, intake screens, sprayer tank shrouds, and seed hopper lids where weatherability and chemical contact are concurrent in the field.
