Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA XC180-NC

In automotive exterior trim programmes where paint deletion is specified as a cost, weight, and volatile-organic-compound reduction measure, KUMHO® ASA XC180-NC is charged at 100 phr as the unfilled natural base resin. The recommended formulation addition ratio for a black cowl-vent-grille compound is 1.5–2.5 phr carbon-black masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 phr UV screener package, 0.2–0.4 phr hindered phenolic/phosphite stabilizer, and 0.1–0.3 phr metal-stearate mould release. Compliance is evaluated with SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure using Type 1A face mounting, ISO 4892-2 cycle 1, ASTM D638-14 for tensile yield, and ISO 179-1/1eA for notched Charpy at 23 °C and -30 °C; OEM approvals in this segment commonly require Delta E below 3.0 and gloss retention above 65 % after 3,000 kJ/m² xenon-arc energy. Downstream production is performed on a 1,200–2,500 kN clamp-force injection moulding machine with a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D general-purpose screw, pre-drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a moisture content below 0.05 %, barrel zones set at 210–230–240–250 °C, nozzle at 245 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C, back pressure 5–10 bar, and injection velocity 80–120 mm/s. For two-cavity mirror-shell tooling with direct hot-runner valve gates, the gate diameter is held at 0.8–1.2 mm and the gate shear rate is kept below 40,000 s⁻¹ to avoid surface silver streaks and jetting. Terminal product types include exterior mirror shells, cowl vent grilles, front grille frames, B-pillar appliqués, roof rack end caps, and wiper arm covers. Published data for this specific grade and conversion route should be confirmed against the supplier lot certificate because the stated starting-point additive ratios are masterbatch-supplier recommendations rather than certified compound values.

What limits thick-wall louver and exterior HVAC housing tooling?

The controlling variable in thick-wall outdoor HVAC louver tooling is the solidification shrinkage of unfilled ASA across a wall-thickness transition from 2.0 mm rib roots to 4.5 mm boss areas; this difference produces sink marks and post-mould warpage unless the packing phase is extended until gate freeze. The production process for this route uses sequential valve-gate actuation on a 2,000–3,500 kN machine, melt temperature 225–240 °C, mould temperature 50–70 °C, injection velocity 100–150 mm/s, holding pressure 60–80 % of injection pressure for 6–12 s, and cooling time 18–30 s depending on boss diameter. Mould-filling analysis for unfilled ASA in these thick-wall areas indicates volumetric shrinkage typically above 5.0 %, so holding pressure must be ramped over 3–5 s before gate freeze to keep sink below the visual acceptance threshold. The formulation addition ratio is 100 phr XC180-NC, 2.0–3.5 phr carbon-black masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 phr processing aid, and 0.2–0.4 phr antioxidant; dry-side flame-retardant addition is not recommended because splay and weld-line embrittlement occur in this geometry, and any V-0 requirement should trigger evaluation of a pre-compounded flame-retardant ASA grade. Compliance standards for outdoor HVAC enclosures include UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, UL 746C f1 outdoor suitability, IEC 60335-2-40 for electrical safety of outdoor air-conditioning equipment, and ISO 4892-2 for weathering. Terminal product types are outdoor condenser louver panels, top cover frames, fan shrouds, drain-pan supports, side access panels, and packaged terminal air-conditioner corner covers.

Outdoor electrical enclosure compliance and UV retention

For outdoor electrical junction boxes and solar combiner-box housings, the dual requirement is that the final compound must satisfy external enclosure standards and long-term UV exposure limits without creating surface carbon-black migration that lowers insulation resistance. The formulation addition ratio for a grey enclosure compound is 100 phr XC180-NC, 1.0–2.0 phr titanium dioxide/brown-oxide colour system, 0.3–0.6 phr HALS/UV absorber combination, 0.2–0.4 phr antioxidant, and 0.1–0.2 phr mould release. Where the housing must pass glow-wire ignition or UL 94 V-0, dry-side FR addition is avoided because it worsens splay and reduces weld-line strength; a pre-compounded FR ASA or ASA/PC variant should be evaluated instead. Injection moulding processing is conducted at melt temperature 230–250 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C, hydraulic back pressure 5–10 bar, screw rotation 50–120 rpm, and cushion 3–6 mm. Splay-free surfaces in ribbed enclosure designs require parting-line vent depth 0.02–0.03 mm and vacuum venting when long flow paths trap air ahead of the melt. Compliance is verified with UL 94, UL 746C, IEC 62208 for empty enclosure performance, IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire flammability, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and REACH EC 1907/2006. Terminal product types include IP65 outdoor junction boxes, solar combiner boxes, EVSE charging station internal enclosures, outdoor instrument housings, and street-lamp terminal boxes.

Layer distribution in ASA capstock coextrusion is constrained by the adhesion window between the ASA melt and the rigid PVC substrate under calibration draw; if the cap layer falls below 0.12 mm, melt fracture and local delamination are observed on the downstream vacuum calibrator. The production line for window and door lineals uses a 25:1 L/D single-screw extruder for the capstock, a 30:1 L/D parallel twin-screw extruder for the rigid PVC substrate, and a coextrusion die with separate melt-lane temperature control, typically 200–215 °C on the ASA side and 190–205 °C on the PVC side. The capstock layer is set at 0.15–0.30 mm, representing 12–20 % of total profile thickness, while the PVC substrate is 80–88 % and an optional recycled PVC core is used only when the outer ASA cap remains continuous. The capstock compound addition ratio is 100 phr XC180-NC, 3–5 phr colour concentrate, 0.8–1.5 phr UV stabilizer masterbatch, 0.5–1.0 phr processing aid, and no impact modifier unless the profile must pass notched Charpy at -10 °C with an energy above 1.0 J. The calibrator operates with dry vacuum at 0.06–0.08 MPa and wet cooling at 15–25 °C; capstock melt temperature above 220 °C at the die lip can produce residence-time streaking and thermal kick toward the PVC layer. Compliance standards are EN 12608-1 for unplasticized PVC profiles, EN 477 for impact strength, ISO 105-A02 grey-scale assessment after weathering, ISO 4892-2 cycle 1, and REACH EC 1907/2006. Terminal product types include window casement frames, door sashes, outdoor trim board, soffit and fascia profiles, and cable duct covers.

Low-temperature impact in garden motor housings is controlled by rubber-phase dispersion, not wall thickness

In garden power equipment, string-trimmer motor housings and snow-blower chute adapters are injection molded from the same natural ASA grade, but the failure mode at -20 °C shifts from ductile to brittle if the butyl-acrylate rubber phase is not uniformly dispersed through the pellet and the melt is overheated above 260 °C. The formulation addition ratio is 100 phr XC180-NC, 2–4 phr colour masterbatch, 0.2–0.4 phr antioxidant, and 0.1–0.3 phr mould release; for snow-service parts, 2–5 phr of a compatible impact modifier is added only after validating weld-line notched Charpy impact at -30 °C. Injection moulding is performed at melt temperature 210–240 °C, fast injection 100–160 mm/s, mould temperature 45–65 °C, and hot-runner drop temperature not exceeding 245 °C to avoid yellowing in light-coloured NC-based compounds. Weld-line placement is managed with sequential valve gating where two flow fronts merge at a rib boss; poor rubber-phase dispersion appears as a haze band in thin-section transmitted-light inspection. Compliance testing uses ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy at 23 °C and -30 °C, ISO 180/1A Izod, SAE J2527 outdoor xenon weathering, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Terminal product types are lawn mower engine cowls, string trimmer motor housings, snow blower chute adapters, garden tractor fender extensions, and hedge trimmer guards.

When recreational vehicle side trims and outdoor signage require paint-free high-gloss retention

Because recreational vehicle exterior trim and outdoor signage frames are produced by sheet extrusion followed by thermoforming or by direct injection moulding, the acceptance criterion is typically retention of ≥70 % of initial 60° gloss after 3,000 kJ/m² xenon-arc weathering without delamination. The formulation addition ratio for sheet extrusion is 100 phr XC180-NC, 3–6 phr UV absorber package, 2–4 phr high-opacity colour concentrate, and 0.2–0.5 phr processing aid; no post-mould painting is used. Sheet production runs on a 30:1 L/D vented single-screw extruder at 210–230 °C, melt pump pressure 80–120 bar, a three-roll polishing stack at 80–100 °C, and sheet thickness 1.0–4.0 mm; thermoforming is conducted at mould temperature 120–160 °C with plug-assisted pre-stretch for corner definition. Regrind from thermoforming skeletons can be re-introduced at 15–20 % with virgin pellets only when sieve size is 8 mm or below; higher regrind loading increases gel formation and surface haze in the polished sheet. Compliance testing includes ISO 4892-2, ASTM D256, ASTM D638-14, ISO 1133-1:2022, and REACH EC 1907/2006. Terminal product types are recreational vehicle side trim, access hatches, outdoor signage frames, outdoor kiosk enclosures, and boat locker doors.
