Application of Kumho Petrochemical KUMHO® ASA HAG5223

High-volume automotive exterior programs use KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 for unpainted mirror housings, door handle bezels, and lower B-pillar trims. The grade is dried in desiccant hopper dryers at 80°C for 3–4 h, bringing residual moisture below 0.02% by weight before melt delivery. Injection molding is performed on servo-hydraulic machines of 1,200–3,000 kN clamp force, with barrel zones from rear to nozzle set between 220°C and 245°C. Mold wall temperature is held at 50–70°C to balance surface gloss and gate freeze time. Hot-runner systems should use polished torpedo tips and externally heated manifolds, with gate diameters no smaller than 0.8 mm for thin-wall sections. Weld-line strength is sensitive to color concentrate carrier selection; concentrates based on ASA or SAN are specified, while LDPE-carrier masterbatch is excluded because it reduces weld-line elongation and can produce localized delamination. Packing pressure is maintained at 50–70% of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s after gate seal to control sink marks. Supplier certificates are checked against ISO 1133-1 melt volume rate and ISO 527-2 tensile yield data, and in-mold stress is minimized by sequencing ejection with differential air blasts. Unpainted mirror housings are evaluated for appearance after SAE J2527 xenon arc exposure and for embrittlement after 1,000 kJ/m² radiant energy, with exact pass criteria defined by the tier-one owner.

What Limits the Capstock Layer Thickness in uPVC Window Profile Coextrusion?

Coextruded weathering capstock made from KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 is run on parallel twin-screw extruders for the rigid PVC substrate and a single-screw extruder for the ASA layer. The capstock melt temperature at the feed block is limited to 220–240°C because long residence times above 250°C shift the terpolymer from yellowing toward brown streaking. The PVC substrate enters the coextrusion die at 185–195°C, and the two melts are combined in a feed block with an adjustable distribution barrier. Capstock layer thickness is set between 0.5 mm and 0.9 mm on exposed surfaces; below 0.5 mm, UV protection becomes heterogeneous after extrusion drawing, and above 0.9 mm, thermal contraction mismatch between ASA and rigid PVC can bow the profile during tank calibration. Calibration is carried out in vacuum tanks with water temperatures of 15–25°C, and haul-off speed is matched to the first calibration die pull. Weathering performance is verified against ISO 4892-2 and ASTM D2244, with color shift and specular gloss retention measured at 60° gloss after specified radiant exposure. Adhesion quality between the capstock layer and PVC substrate is evaluated by shear peel testing on cut profile sections. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so production validation should include profile corner fusion tests after ASA capping to confirm weld strength at the ASA-PVC boundary.

In photovoltaic balance-of-system components, KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 is injection molded into meter housings, solar combiner boxes, and rural telecommunication enclosures. The wall thickness is normally maintained between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm to avoid internal voids while retaining screw bosses for lid gaskets. Tool design uses edge gates or fan gates with a land length of 0.8–1.2 mm, and gates are placed away from weather-seal grooves to prevent jetting at fill fronts. The grade is processed at melt temperatures of 230–250°C and mold temperatures of 50–60°C. Because unfilled ASA is not an inherent UL 94 V-0 material, enclosure designs requiring V-0 at 3.0 mm must either use a flame-retardant ASA variant or accept a UL 94 HB classification with product-level insulation and spacing rules per IEC 60664-1. Outdoor suitability is assessed through UL 746C, including water exposure and UV conditioning, before mold shrinkage is validated in the field. The material is dried to 0.02% or lower moisture content before molding; processing above 260°C produces surface degradation that reduces enclosure impact resistance measured by ISO 179/1eA.

When a Dark-Gray Cowl Grille Must Pass SAE J2527 Without Paint

Dark-gray and black cowl grilles made from KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 are subjected to both UV radiation and high surface temperatures from solar absorption. At 0.5% to 1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch loadings, surface temperatures under stagnation can exceed 70°C in tropical climates, so long-term heat aging is included in the validation plan. Tooling for these grilles uses rib-to-wall thickness ratios not exceeding 0.6:1, and the main visible surface is gated with a fan gate to minimize flow hesitation. Melt temperature is kept below 245°C to reduce formation of acrylic-phase oxidation byproducts, which appear as yellowing in white or light-gray parts but are masked in black grades. Packing time is extended to 6–8 s for long flow lengths because the dark matte texture increases surface area and requires complete replication of the mold grain. Weathering acceptance is based on SAE J2527 and ISO 4892-2, with visual evaluation for microcracking under 10× magnification and ΔE measured per ASTM D2244 after 2,500 kJ/m². Dimensional stability after heat aging is checked at 80°C for 24 h per OEM internal methods. If the cowl grille is mechanically fastened to the body with expanding clips, relaxation after torque must be measured because ASA can creep above 60°C when stress is concentrated at bosses. Published data for HAG5223 long-term creep at fastener bosses is limited; part-level fixture testing is required.

Agricultural Equipment Inspection Covers and Diesel Exhaust Chemical Exposure

Tractor side panels, meter cluster visors, and combine inspection covers use KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 for low-gloss exterior appearance and resistance to diesel fuel splash and hydraulic oil mist. Chemical resistance is evaluated by immersion or spot contact per ISO 175 and ASTM D543; the styrenic-acrylic matrix resists aliphatic hydrocarbons but softens with prolonged contact from aromatic solvents, methyl ethyl ketone, or concentrated acid. The melt is injected at 230–250°C into tools with 40–60°C mold temperature, using direct sprue gates or tab gates for thick boss regions. Because these covers are large and shallow, the packing phase is set as a function of gate freeze, with hold pressure reduced to 30–50% of peak to avoid overpacking in ribs. The component is often textured with a fine grain to reduce visible scratch damage; mold release from textured surfaces is improved by using an external release spray during initial production only. UV stabilization is verified through ISO 4892-3 for short-wavelength UV, while low-temperature impact is measured by ISO 179/1eA at -30°C after conditioning. Processors must avoid introducing regranulate above 20% because repeated extrusion reduces impact strength and increases color drift in dark brown shades.

Recreational Vehicle Compartment Doors and Marine Hatch Rings Demand Low-Temperature Impact Retention

Rigid compartment doors, water-fill hatches, and marine hatch rings are injection molded from KUMHO® ASA HAG5223 where UV exposure and low-temperature toughness are required. The material is dried to 0.02% moisture and processed at melt temperatures of 235–250°C; tools are heated to 60–80°C for high-gloss exterior surfaces and reduced internal stress around hinge bosses. Gate locations are offset from the hinge line so that weld lines do not coincide with high tensile loads during repeated opening cycles. Impact strength at -30°C is evaluated by ISO 179/1eA, and hinge boss torque resistance is tested on the finished part after 500 open-close cycles under 50% relative humidity. Salt spray resistance is quantified by ASTM B117 for 500 h and monitored for surface blisters and gloss change. For saltwater environments, direct contact with concentrated bilge cleaners containing hypochlorite is avoided because oxidative degradation attacks the styrene-rich domains and reduces surface gloss. The grade does not provide antifouling or inherent UV reflective properties; if a white or high-reflectance hatch surface is specified, a titanium dioxide concentrate in ASA carrier at 4–6 wt% is used, with dispersion verified by colorimeter readings and no visible pigment striation at 50× magnification.
