Mass-coloured exterior mirror shells for light-duty vehicle platforms in China and South Korea are screened for UV-induced gloss degradation and dimensional creep before tooling release. In this segment, KUMHO® ASA HAG5220 is compounded at 96–98 wt% of total formulation, with 2–4 wt% light-stable colour masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% hindered phenolic stabiliser where extended hot-light ageing is stipulated by the OEM. Injection moulding on reciprocating-screw machines with 20:1–22:1 L/D barrels and reverse-taper nozzles is conducted at a melt temperature of 240–260 °C and mould temperature of 60–80 °C; lower mould temperatures are avoided because rapid skin solidification increases sink-mark depth around boss features. Nozzle temperature is typically set 10–15 °C below the front-zone set point to prevent drool during open-mould pauses, and batch-to-batch gloss variation is tracked against the first article on textured tool faces rather than absolute colour coordinates alone. Compliance is assessed under ISO 11469:2016 marking, ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc ageing, ASTM D638-14 tensile loading, ISO 178:2019 flexural modulus, 2000/53/EC end-of-life vehicle restrictions, EC No 1907/2006 REACH, and Directive 2011/65/EU with (EU) 2015/863 for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE restrictions. Drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt% is mandatory when warehouse relative humidity exceeds 60%; published data for this specific configuration is limited to OEM-internal weathering programs, so qualification relies on retained production-tooling samples rather than laboratory plaques alone. Produced terminal part types include mirror housings, side repeater bezels, A-pillar covers, and door handle escutcheons.
On solar-exposed energy meter boxes in tropical and subtropical distribution grids, two-track qualification is normal: UL 746C outdoor suitability as a UV/water exposure protocol, and IEC 62208:2023 for empty enclosure performance. KUMHO® ASA HAG5220 is processed at 98–100 wt% as a virgin base resin, with 0–2 wt% light-stable colour concentrate; antistatic or lubricant packages above 0.5 wt% are excluded because of potential plate-out on tool venting and reduced impact at knit lines. Injection-moulded enclosures are produced on large-platen machines of 450–850 t clamp force with accumulator-assisted injection for filling thin-wall rib sections served by hot-runner valve gates; melt temperature is held at 245–265 °C, and hot-runner manifold temperature is profiled no more than 10 °C above the nozzle set point to avoid thermal degradation at residence times exceeding 6 min. Batch release standards include ISO 4892-2:2013, Method A, cycle 1, ISO 179-1:2023 Charpy impact, IEC 62208:2023, and UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm; wall sections are commonly 2.5–3.5 mm for impact-rated covers. Representative parts are three-phase meter enclosures, distribution box lids, photovoltaic combiner boxes, and outdoor datalogger housings.
Capstock substitution on rigid PVC window profiles requires differential rheology between the substrate and the ASA surface layer; when the ASA melt viscosity is too far above the PVC substrate, layer thickness oscillation appears as surface wave mark on the calibrated coextrudate. For coextrusion, KUMHO® ASA HAG5220 is normally run at 100 wt% as the capstock compound, with 0–1 wt% dry colour concentrate; if matting is required, a crosslinked acrylic matting agent is added at 0.5–2.0 wt%, but this raises melt pressure and is avoided when profile throughput exceeds 1.5 m/min. The ASA layer is extruded through a coextrusion die at 210–230 °C, while the PVC substrate melt is kept at 190–200 °C; the resulting cap layer is maintained at 0.2–0.4 mm thickness on exposed faces, with calibration plates set at 20–25 °C and vacuum at −0.06 to −0.08 MPa. Compliance for profile systems is assessed under EN 12608-1:2016 profile specification, EN 477:2018 falling-mass impact resistance, EN 479:2018 heat reversion, ISO 4892-2:2013 UV ageing, and Directive 2011/65/EU RoHS recast; surface failure caused by improper drying—visible as micro-voids at the coextrusion interface—is prevented by pre-drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h. End-use profiles include window outer frames, sash capping, shutter slats, and ventilated rain-screen cladding strips.
Because outdoor air-conditioning condensing unit housings and heat pump cabinets see simultaneous exposure to ultraviolet radiation, compressor vibration, and temperature cycling from −40 °C to 70 °C, powder-coated steel alternatives require periodic refinishing that moulded KUMHO® ASA HAG5220 components avoid. HAG5220 is moulded at 97–99 wt% with 1–3 wt% of a light-stable colour masterbatch; foaming agents are not used in this segment because cell collapse at gas counter-pressure settings below 0.3 MPa produces non-uniform wall thickness in parts with six or more demoulding directions. Processing uses large injection moulding machines with 800–1,200 t clamp force and sequential valve-gated hot runners; melt temperature is set at 240–260 °C, injection speed is profiled to fill 70–80% of flow length at constant shear rate, and packing pressure is maintained at 50–70 MPa for 8–12 s. Applicable test methods include ISO 4892-2:2013 accelerated UV exposure, ASTM D648-18 heat deflection temperature, ISO 178:2019 flexural modulus, and UL 94 HB flammability; units shipped to EU markets are screened under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and Directive 2011/65/EU. Terminal product forms include AC condensing unit top covers, fan grilles, heat pump cabinet side panels, and inverter controller housings.
In cold-climate recreational product moulding cells, materials are selected against painted polycarbonate/ABS substrates because polybutadiene-containing copolymers tend to delaminate after repeated stone impingement at −30 °C. KUMHO® ASA HAG5220 is specified at 96–99 wt% with 1–4 wt% of a low-temperature impact modifier only when the moulder runs tooling with long flow paths exceeding 300 mm; otherwise the impact modifier is omitted. Injection moulding takes place on 350–600 t hydraulic or electric toggle presses with dynamic mould temperature control cycling from 40 °C to 80 °C to reduce weld-line visibility without post-mould painting. Melt temperature is limited to 235–255 °C; residence time beyond 8 min at these settings produces yellowing in light grey and white formulations. Quality release is performed under ASTM D256-10(2018) Izod impact, ISO 306:2022 Vicat softening temperature, ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon exposure, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for SVHC compliance. Produced components include snowmobile side panels, personal watercraft storage hatches, mountain bicycle fairings, and off-road vehicle mirror arms.
