    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Kumho Petrochemical grade XT-500 is designated as an extrusion-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The material is supplied in pellet form for thick sheet, coextruded capstock, and profile processes in which controlled melt strength, sag resistance, and low-temperature ductility are primary selection criteria. The grade is classified under ISO 2580-1, with specimen preparation and property determination governed by ISO 2580-2. Supplier documentation positions the grade in appliance thermoforming, sanitary ware sheet, luggage panels, and furniture edge banding. It is not a flame-retardant compound, and it is not an electroplating grade; those applications require different grades within the Kumho ABS portfolio.

Molecular architecture of the dispersed polybutadiene phase controls both low-speed ductility and high-speed crack propagation. In ABS resins, the rubber phase consists of grafted polybutadiene particles with a controlled size distribution; larger rubber particles improve impact absorption, while smaller particles maintain surface gloss and process stability. For an extrusion resin such as XT-500, the rubber phase is expected to survive repeated shear history during sheet extrusion without excessive particle breakup or crosslinking. Capillary rheometry under ISO 11443 is preferred over a single melt-flow value for quantifying the shear-viscosity function used in die design. Published data for the exact rubber loading, particle size distribution, and capillary viscosity curve of XT-500 is limited; therefore, a grade substitution should not be made without comparing the ISO 1133-1 melt volume-flow rate and the ISO 180/1A notched impact response at the intended wall thickness.

How Is XT-500 Specification Compliance Expressed Under ISO 2580-2?

Specification compliance is expressed as a matrix of test methods rather than a single melt-flow value. Because XT-500 is an extrusion resin, its specification emphasizes melt volume-flow rate, not melt mass-flow rate, and low-temperature ductility as measured by notched impact tests. The following table lists the standard methods commonly used by incoming quality-control laboratories for lot acceptance. The standard designations are supplied by the resin manufacturer on certificates of analysis and should not be replaced with uncalibrated melt-flow testers or single-point hardness values.

Test-condition dependence is important. Notched impact values obtained on edge-gated injection-moulded specimens under ISO 180/1A may differ from the performance of thick extruded sheet because of orientation and cooling-rate differences. For this reason, some processors qualify XT-500 by testing specimens machined from extruded sheet according to ISO 527-2 and ISO 179-1, rather than relying exclusively on injection-moulded standardized specimens.

Resin drying is the first operational boundary. The continuous styrene-acrylonitrile phase and the dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase in XT-500 are hygroscopic; pellet moisture above 0.10 wt% is sufficient to produce surface splay on polished sheet and to reduce melt strength at the die. In a production environment with ambient relative humidity above 60 %, drying must be performed in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with an air dew point of -40 °C or lower. The recommended inlet air temperature is 80 °C to 85 °C, with a minimum residence time of 3 h to 4 h. The target residual moisture for sheet extrusion is 0.05 wt% or lower, verified by a calibrated Karl Fischer titrator or by ISO 15512-aligned moisture analysis. Batch-to-batch moisture variation is commonly observed when pellets are received in unlined octabins stored in unheated warehouses; therefore, moisture verification should be performed per delivery, not per resin grade.

Extrusion equipment should be configured for a controlled melt-temperature profile. A single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and L/D ratio from 33:1 to 40:1 is typical for ABS sheet lines. Barrel set points are normally profiled between 210 °C and 240 °C, but the decisive parameter is the melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer at the die entry. Sustained melt temperature above 250 °C accelerates degradation of the polybutadiene rubber phase, causing yellowing, deposit formation at the die lip, and a measurable loss of notched impact strength. Screw speed and back pressure should be set so that full-throughput melt temperature remains below the degradation threshold. The die gap and throughput must be matched to the roll-stack speed to maintain sheet width, edge integrity, and thickness tolerance.

When XT-500 Is Run on Sheet Extrusion Lines with High-Velocity Chill Rolls

High-velocity chill rolls impose a rapid solidification history that plays a larger role in sheet ductility than many line operators assume. The roll stack should use chrome-plated rolls with internal oil or water temperature control. For ABS sheet, first-roll temperature is commonly maintained between 60 °C and 90 °C; lower roll temperatures increase gloss but can freeze in molecular orientation and create residual stress. The second and third rolls are set in a descending profile. If the sheet is cooled too quickly, the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix passes through its glass transition before the polybutadiene rubber phase can fully relax; the resulting sheet may exhibit edge curl after trimming and non-uniform thermoforming shrinkage. A common production failure occurs when sheet gauge is increased without reducing line speed, leading to insufficient core cooling and roll-stack release issues.

In coextruded sheet, XT-500 may serve as the substrate layer under a gloss cap layer of styrenic copolymer or polymethyl methacrylate. Coextrusion requires matched viscosity at the interface; a large melt-viscosity mismatch produces interfacial instability and wavy layer boundaries. The viscosity ratio under production shear rates should be checked by ISO 11443 capillary rheometry at 230 °C, not by low-shear melt-volume rate alone. Color masterbatch carriers should be SAN-based or ABS-compatible. Polyethylene or wax carriers can reduce capstock adhesion and produce delamination in deep-draw thermoformed parts.

Thermoforming uses for XT-500 include thick sheet from 3 mm to 5 mm, processed on contact-heating or shuttle thermoforming machines. Sheet surface temperature during forming is typically maintained between 140 °C and 170 °C; exact values depend on sheet thickness, color masterbatch, and draw ratio. The grade’s high melt strength provides a wider sag window than that of high-flow injection-moulded ABS. Deep-draw appliance liners require uniform heating and precise plug assist to avoid corner thinning below 60 % of nominal wall thickness. Final parts should be tested for low-temperature notched impact using ISO 180/1A at -30 °C or lower, depending on the end-use temperature. Published data for the specific XT-500 thermoforming map is limited; processing parameters should be established on the target production line with the actual sheet thickness, colorant, and regrind level.

Regrind use is possible but introduces process drift. Clean sheet skeletons from thermoforming operations may be reintroduced at levels up to 20 %, provided the regrind is dust-controlled and dried under the same conditions as virgin pellets. Higher regrind fractions reduce melt strength and shift the sheet sag window; color stability also changes because the rubber phase undergoes additional thermal history during regrind extrusion. Processors should not assume that regrind addition of 20 % is acceptable for thin-gauge sheet without re-qualifying the final part under the application acceptance criteria.

XT-500 differs from injection moulding grades in the same Kumho ABS range primarily by melt-flow level, die swell, and rubber-phase contribution to sag resistance. High-flow injection grades exhibit higher melt volume-flow rates under ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C and 10 kg and are optimized for filling thin-wall moulds; they sacrifice melt strength and low-temperature impact at equal wall thickness. XT-500 should not be substituted for a high-flow injection grade when spiral-flow length and short cycle time are the critical process variables. It differs from Kumho electroplating grades in that the rubber particle size distribution and surface stabilization are not designed for chromic acid etch and electroless nickel adhesion. It also differs from flame-retardant ABS compounds: no brominated or phosphorus-based flame-retardant additive package is specified. Flame-retardant compounds require separate purging and screw cleaning to avoid cross-contamination in coextrusion plants.

Compliance status should be confirmed through the material declaration. The final article, not the pellet, must satisfy EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 180.22 where direct food-contact approval is claimed. The resin supplier may declare conformity with REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for the unmodified natural pellet; processors are responsible for the compliance of colorants, regrind, and processing aids. For outdoor exposure, XT-500 is not supplied as a UV-stabilized weathering grade; long-term outdoor use requires carbon black loading or a suitable UV stabilizer package and should be validated under ASTM G154 or ISO 4892-2. Exposure to ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, and certain aromatic hydrocarbons should be avoided in service; environmental stress-cracking performance should be evaluated by ISO 22088 where grease, oil, or cleaning-agent contact is expected. Unreinforced ABS materials are commonly rated HB under UL 94 at thicknesses of 1.5 mm and above; XT-500 should not be represented as a flame-retardant material unless the final article is tested at the specified thickness and color.

Hot-plate welding and machining are possible but require residual-stress control. Extruded XT-500 profiles can be hot-plate welded at plate temperatures of 180 °C to 220 °C, with joining time determined by wall thickness. Methylene chloride or ABS solvent cements may initiate stress cracking near cut edges; a post-weld annealing step at 60 °C for 1 h is sometimes used to reduce residual stress. Drilling and routing should use sharp carbide tooling and adequate chip removal to prevent localized heating and surface microcracking.
