    More Introduction

Kumho Petrochemical ABS XT-100 is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene extrusion grade. The manufacturer-published typical data define a medium-flow, high-impact material. Density is stated as 1.04 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183. The melt flow rate measured at 220 °C under 10 kg is 4.0 g/10 min according to ISO 1133-1:2022. Tensile yield strength is 46 MPa under ISO 527-2, with elongation at break of 20 %. Flexural modulus is 2.4 GPa and flexural strength is 69 MPa under ISO 178. Notched Izod impact strength is 30 kJ/m² at 23 °C and 7.0 kJ/m² at -30 °C under ISO 180/1A. Heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa is 88 °C under ISO 75-2/B; Vicat softening temperature is 105 °C under ISO 306/B50. Flammability is classified as UL 94 HB.

These values are typical test-specimen data from supplier literature and should not be treated as design allowables without application-specific testing. The combination of 4.0 g/10 min melt flow and 30 kJ/m² notched Izod at 23 °C places XT-100 in the high-impact extrusion segment. The product is not optimized for high-flow thin-wall injection molding; when injected, its lower melt flow requires higher packing pressure and longer fill time than high-flow grades.

Primary conversion for XT-100 is sheet extrusion followed by thermoforming. In refrigerator liner production, starting sheet thickness is commonly 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm, and forming is performed with sheet surface temperature between 150 °C and 180 °C. Below 140 °C corner tearing is observed in deep cavities, while above 190 °C the sheet loses gloss and tends to sag. Plug-assisted forming is used when draw ratio exceeds 1.5. Mold temperatures are generally held at 60–80 °C; plug temperatures from 60 °C to 90 °C reduce surface chilling. After forming, corner thinning should remain above 0.2 mm to preserve low-temperature ductility.

Extrusion lines for XT-100 normally use a single-screw extruder with L/D ratio of at least 28:1 and compression ratio of 3.0–3.5:1. A barrier screw or Maddock mixing section improves thermal homogeneity and pigment dispersion. Melt temperature at the die is held at 210–230 °C. The die gap is set approximately 10–15 % below the target sheet thickness when polished rolls are used; roll temperatures of 80–110 °C are typical for gloss development. If the line lacks a melt pump, screw-speed variation and regrind feed variation produce gauge bands. Melt-pressure variation at the die entrance above ±0.5 MPa generally correlates with visible sheet thickness variation.

Why does moisture control change the practical extrusion window for XT-100?

Moisture in ABS is not a minor surface-defect issue. At melt temperatures above 220 °C, moisture vaporizes inside the melt and creates splay, pits, and web instability. Pre-drying is therefore mandatory before sheet extrusion. The material is dried in a desiccant dryer with air dew point below -30 °C, inlet temperature of 80–85 °C, and residence time of 3–4 h. At relative humidity above 60 %, residence time is increased to 4–6 h. Residual moisture should be below 0.05 wt%, verified by Karl Fischer titration or ISO 15512. Regrind has greater surface area and absorbs moisture faster; if regrind is added, the same drying schedule should be applied to the blend.

The upper melt temperature is 250 °C. Above this threshold, the unsaturated butadiene phase undergoes thermo-oxidative degradation. The chemical pathway includes hydroperoxide formation and chain scission in the rubber phase; this reduces impact strength and can release an acrid odor. Even if discoloration is slight, low-temperature Izod impact can fall below the published 7.0 kJ/m² at -30 °C. Degradation is cumulative across multiple heat histories; therefore regrind above 30 wt% is an operational boundary requiring revalidation of melt flow, color, and impact retention.

Thermal decomposition is also accelerated by excessive melt residence time. Total residence time in barrel, adapter, and die should be kept below 10 min. During production interruptions, barrel temperature should be lowered to 150 °C or the machine should be purged with a styrenic purging compound. Holding at full temperature for longer than 30 min can form gel particles that later appear as black specks in sheet and finished liners.

Differences from other ABS grades are mostly expressed by the melt-flow–impact balance. High-flow injection grades with melt flow rates above 20 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg have lower melt strength and may sag during thermoforming, making them unsuitable for large liners. XT-100 at 4.0 g/10 min is closer to extrusion and blow-molding ABS. Compared with higher-heat ABS grades, XT-100 has lower heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa and lower Vicat softening temperature; it should not be selected for continuous-load service above 90 °C. Compared with HIPS sheet, XT-100 offers higher room-temperature notched impact, higher gloss, and higher heat resistance, but HIPS can be less moisture-sensitive and lower in material cost. The low-temperature impact of 7.0 kJ/m² at -30 °C is a boundary in freezer applications; high residual stress from forming can raise the effective ductile-brittle transition and reduce low-temperature toughness.

When cyclopentane-blown rigid polyurethane foam contacts the formed ABS liner

Refrigerator liners made from XT-100 are exposed to polyurethane foam insulation. Cyclopentane, HFC, and hydrocarbon blowing agents can plasticize or stress-crack the ABS surface if the liner carries high residual strain. ABS generally shows adequate resistance, but cracks can initiate at sharp internal corners, attachment bosses, or thermoformed ribs where local strain exceeds the material stress-cracking threshold. Published data for XT-100 under a specific production foam system is limited; therefore, validation should include thermoformed parts foamed with the production formulation and cycled between -30 °C and 60 °C. Corner radii below 2 mm are not recommended unless trial parts show no cracking after thermal cycling. Post-forming annealing at 80–90 °C for 30 min may reduce residual stress but can alter sheet dimensions and surface gloss.

Contamination control is another boundary condition. ABS XT-100 should not be blended with polyolefin fines because polyethylene and polypropylene are incompatible with the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and cause delamination. PVC and acetal residues should be prevented; PVC releases hydrogen chloride at processing temperatures, while acetal degrades into formaldehyde. Dedicated drying and conveying equipment is recommended for consistent production.

Operational limits are explicit: pre-drying is required at relative humidity above 60 %, melt temperature must not exceed 250 °C, regrind should be held at or below 30 wt% unless property revalidation is performed, and incompatible polymer residues must be excluded from conveying and processing equipment. Within those boundaries, Kumho Petrochemical ABS XT-100 is positioned as a thermoformable high-impact ABS sheet grade for refrigerator liners, door liners, and formed appliance panels requiring a balance of rigidity, surface appearance, and room-temperature toughness.
