Application of Korea Petrochemical YUHWA HIDEN UHMWPE U090L

Korea Petrochemical YUHWA HIDEN UHMWPE U090L enters wet-process lithium-ion battery separator production as a virgin powder controlled for mineral oil slurry uniformity. The slurry is prepared at 20–28 wt% U090L in a high-boiling paraffinic process oil, with antioxidant stabilization supplied by 0.1–0.5 wt% of a blended system containing pentaerythrityl tetrakis(3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate) and tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite. Gelation and dispersion are carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 52:1. Barrel temperatures are staged from 160°C to 240°C. The gel is cast through a slot die of 300–600 mm width and pinned to a chill roll at 15–30°C. The quenched sheet is biaxially stretched in a two-stage orientation oven at 90–120°C. Machine-direction draw is set between 4.5:1 and 6.0:1, while transverse-direction draw is set between 6.0:1 and 9.0:1. Process oil is extracted with methylene chloride or n-hexane in a countercurrent bath at 25–40°C. Heat setting follows at 110–130°C to stabilize pore dimensions and reduce thermal shrinkage. Finished separator thickness for high-energy-density cells is typically 5–16 µm. Tensile properties are evaluated per ASTM D882, porosity by ASTM D2873, air permeability by ISO 5636-5, and shutdown response by differential scanning calorimetry. Hydrocarbon residuals are controlled below 500 ppm by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Separator film with thickness variation above ±0.5 µm creates current-density hot spots during fast charging; sustained gel homogeneity and extraction uniformity are therefore the central process controls.

What Controls Draw Ratio in UHMWPE Gel-Spun Yarn?

In gel spinning, U090L is dispersed into a mineral oil or decalin carrier at 6–12 wt%. The polymer concentration is the primary variable governing the achievable total draw ratio because lower concentration reduces chain entanglement density and permits total draw ratios between 30:1 and 80:1. Dissolution is performed in a jacketed stirred vessel at 130–170°C under nitrogen for 60–120 minutes. The solution is metered through a spinneret with 40–120 holes of 0.8–1.2 mm diameter. The gel filaments are quenched in a water bath at 10–20°C, extracted with n-hexane, and hot-drawn through multi-stage ovens at 120–150°C. A final draw ratio above 55:1 is required for yarns targeting tensile strength above 2.5 GPa. Drawn segments with local draw below 45:1 exhibit lower tenacity and higher creep under sustained load. Residual decalin or mineral oil must be reduced below 0.5 wt% before drawing because lubricant residues suppress fibril orientation. Oxidative chain scission during hot drawing is mitigated by adding 0.05–0.15 wt% tocopherol-based stabilizer before dissolution. Terminal products include ballistic helmet shells, hard armor plates, cut-resistant gloves, and synthetic mooring ropes. Single-yarn breaking force is measured per ISO 2062, linear density per ASTM D3217, and cut resistance under ISO 13997. Published ballistic panel data for this exact U090L yarn configuration is limited; lot acceptance for armor requires independent ballistic testing against the specific threat standard.

Ram Extruder Pressure Profiles and Die Land Friction

U090L does not form a melt with measurable flow under ISO 1133-1:2022, which excludes conventional screw plastication and positions ram extrusion as the primary shaping method for profiles. The powder is pre-compacted at 20–30 MPa and fed into a heated barrel with a hydraulic plunger. Barrel temperatures are segmented from 190°C to 230°C, with die temperature controlled within ±1°C. Back-pressure for solid profiles is normally 15–35 MPa depending on die land ratio and cross-sectional area. Rectangular sections above 10 mm thickness require a die land length-to-thickness ratio above 10:1 to reduce internal weld lines; sections below 8 mm can be run with land ratios of 6:1. The extruded profile exits at 150–170°C and is cooled in a water bath to below 60°C before cutting. Neat U090L powder is used for most structural profiles; antistatic carbon black or silicone oil is added at 1–5 wt% only when the terminal part is not intended for high-purity chemical service. Machining of ram-extruded stock uses carbide-tipped tooling at 250–500 rpm and low feed rates to avoid surface melting. Terminal components include chain guide rails, star wheels, screw conveyor flights, wear strips for beverage filling lines, and belt conveyor wear shoes. Food-contact applications are assessed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Virgin UHMWPE designation and property consistency are verified by ASTM D4020 and ISO 11542-1. Abrasive wear in dry materials handling is compared by ASTM G65; continuous sliding surface temperatures above 50°C reduce wear resistance sharply under load.

Pressed U090L sheet for hoppers, dump truck bodies, and marine fender pads is manufactured in compression presses with capacities from 300 t to 5,000 t. The formulation is neat U090L powder without external lubricants or fillers because lubricants reduce inter-particle fusion and create delamination planes. The powder is filled into a steel mold and cold-compacted at 10–20 MPa to evacuate air. Heating to 200–220°C is followed by a dwell of 15–20 minutes per 10 mm of thickness. During this dwell, the powder particles fuse by a sintering mechanism; no distinct molten pool is generated. Cooling is controlled at 5–15°C/h through the crystallization range to prevent void formation at the centerline of thick sections. Sheet above 50 mm is produced by sequential layer charges. Finished sheets are planed to ±0.2 mm thickness tolerance and stress-relieved at 80–100°C for 4–6 hours. Terminal uses include silo cone liners, truck bed liners, port fender pads, and concrete form liners. Flexural modulus is tested per ISO 178, with typical values for compression-molded UHMWPE in the 600–900 MPa range. Low-temperature impact is verified by ISO 179 Charpy impact at -40°C. For indirect food contact, migration limits under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 remain the governing compliance requirement. Pre-drying of the powder is required when storage relative humidity exceeds 60%; surface moisture increases sintered-void formation and reduces sheet uniformity.

When Sintered Porous Parts Replace HDPE Filter Elements

Sintered porous sections are formed by compressing U090L powder at 10–30 MPa and fusing particles at 170–190°C. Without pore-former additives, porosity remains below 40%, with nominal pore windows biased to 20–80 µm by sieving the powder fraction. These parts replace HDPE filters where backwash pulsing or temperature above 60°C causes stress cracking. Applications include wastewater aeration diffusers, desalination pre-filters, gas diffusion spargers, and solvent-resistant filter plates. Bubble-point integrity is measured per ISO 2942. Microbial barrier claims in pharmaceutical venting require validation under ASTM F838-20. A process limitation is sodium hypochlorite attack; exposure to hypochlorite above 2.0 wt% at temperatures above 40°C embrittles sintered UHMWPE over repeated cleaning cycles. Published multi-cycle data for this specific U090L sintered structure is limited, so long-term oxidizer compatibility must be confirmed by pilot immersion testing.

Evaluating U090L Wear Rings in Cryogenic Transfer Pumps

Cryogenic pump wear rings and valve seats are machined from compression-molded U090L rounds. The polymer retains useful impact resistance at -196°C; Charpy impact is measured per ISO 179. Dimensional stability at cryogenic temperature is governed by the coefficient of linear thermal expansion; for UHMWPE this is typically 1.5–2.0×10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ at 23°C, and components must be machined with larger clearances than POM or PEEK equivalents to compensate for thermal contraction. Continuous service pressure on wear rings is kept below 1.0 MPa at cryogenic temperature because creep under radial load increases when the LNG fluid film is interrupted. The powder should be virgin U090L without filler; graphite fillers are not used where high-purity product contact is required. Installation testing follows EN 12567 for LNG isolation valves or class-society type approval for marine transfer pumps. Terminal products include LNG loading arm wear rings, cryogenic ball valve seats, and submerged pump thrust shoes. Aging performance is influenced by process oil residuals; compression-molded blocks must be certified to <0.1 wt% extractable hydrocarbon by ISO 6427 before machining for cryogenic service.
