    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

JSR ENEOS Materials SBS TR2787 is a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer supplied in pellet form. The polymer consists of polystyrene end-blocks and a polybutadiene mid-block; the phase-separated morphology provides mechanical integrity at ambient temperature and thermoplastic flow at elevated temperature. The grade is positioned for polymer-modified bitumen, thermoplastic impact modification, and adhesive/sealant formulations. Because the product is produced by anionic solution polymerization, the specification profile is defined by bound styrene content, butadiene repeat-unit isomer distribution, molecular weight distribution, coupling efficiency, stabilizer package, and pellet bulk density. Grade-specific values for TR2787 are controlled through the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis; generic SBS values from other grades should not be substituted for lot-release acceptance.

Incoming inspection commonly uses density by ISO 1183-1:2019, melt mass-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022, volatile matter by ISO 248-1:2019, ash by ISO 247-1:2017, bound styrene by ISO 2453:2010, and tensile behavior by ISO 37:2017. Because TR2787 is not a random copolymer, it cannot be specified solely by styrene content and Mooney viscosity. Fracture and flow behavior are influenced by styrene block length, butadiene microstructure, and linearity. Users receiving shipment should compare the lot certificate of analysis against the internal incoming inspection plan, with emphasis on melt-flow stability between lots. Lot-to-lot variance in continuous solution polymerization is normally lower than emulsion SBR, but heat-history differences during pelletization can still shift melt flow by a measurable amount.

A practical QC program should retain at least 3 production lots as reference standards to detect drift in gel content, color, and die swell. Gel content is not covered by the standards listed below and should be determined by a controlled filtration or solvent dissolution method using toluene at 23°C to 25°C. Since TR2787 is unsaturated in the polybutadiene mid-block, antioxidant content and distribution can also influence long-term melt stability; this is not fully captured by a single melt-flow value.

What Are the Specification Limits Applicable to SBS TR2787?

In the absence of the manufacturer’s lot-specific technical data sheet, the following compliance matrix establishes the minimum test-method set for incoming QC of SBS TR2787. The table does not assign numerical limits because limits are grade-specific and must be taken from the certificate of analysis. Internal specifications should be established from at least 3 production lots to capture normal lot-to-lot variation.

Polymer-modified bitumen production with TR2787 typically begins with heating the base bitumen to 160–180°C before adding SBS pellets under agitation. Addition levels commonly range from 3 wt% to 7 wt% based on bitumen mass; the exact level depends on paraffin content, maltene/resin ratio, and target performance grade. A rotor-stator high-shear mixer is used until the polymer phase disperses. Digestion is considered complete when the binder passes fluorescence microscopy and no continuous polymer network defects are visible. Storage stability is measured by EN 13399, softening point by ASTM D36, penetration by ASTM D5, and dynamic viscosity by ASTM D4402. Because TR2787 contains an unsaturated polybutadiene mid-block, prolonged storage at 180°C without antioxidant protection can shift viscosity. Published data for TR2787-specific degradation kinetics under 190°C storage is limited, so plant-scale hold time must be validated against the base bitumen source.

When a Linear SBS Grade Replaces a Radial SBS in Polymer-Modified Bitumen

Selection between TR2787, a linear SBS, and radial SBS grades is determined by target rutting resistance, mixing energy, and storage stability. Linear SBS grades typically develop lower PMB viscosity at equal polymer content because linear chains relax more readily under shear. Radial SBS grades can produce a higher softening point per phr and a stronger elastic network, but they may require longer digestion time and higher mixer torque. In a comparative evaluation based on ASTM D4402 and ASTM D36, viscosity at 135°C and softening point should be normalized to the same polymer content; direct comparison without normalization is not interpretable. TR2787 also differs from hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers such as SEBS in that the butadiene mid-block retains unsaturation. This provides crosslinkable sites but lowers oxidative resistance during hot storage. ASTM D2872 rolling thin-film oven aging and EN 13399 storage stability testing are therefore more informative than a single softening-point measurement. Published comparative data for TR2787 against specific radial grades in PMB is limited; benchtop screening with the actual bitumen source is required before a substitution decision.

Compounding Equipment, Temperature Gradients, and Shear History in Thermoplastic Modification

In thermoplastic modification, TR2787 is introduced as an impact modifier or compatibilizer in polypropylene, polyethylene, or polystyrene compounds. A co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D ≥ 40:1 is commonly used to generate the dispersive mixing required for block-copolymer domain reduction. A representative profile sets the feed throat at 150°C, the mid-zone at 180°C, and the die at 200°C; melt temperature should not exceed 220°C because the unsaturated polybutadiene mid-block degrades by thermo-oxidative chain scission. Specific energy input is a better control parameter than screw speed alone; typical SBS-containing polyolefin blends operate in the range 0.15–0.25 kWh/kg, but TR2787-specific data are limited and should be generated on the intended extruder. Post-compounding characterization uses melt flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile yield by ASTM D638-14, and impact strength by ISO 179-1:2010 or ASTM D256. A known process conflict is that too little screw shear leaves visible gel particles, while excessive shear reduces molecular weight and impact performance. No universal screw design avoids both failure modes for all matrices.

In hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives and solvent-borne contact adhesives, SBS TR2787 is formulated with hydrocarbon tackifiers, paraffinic or naphthenic oils, and antioxidant packages. Mixing is typically performed in sigma-blade kneaders or planetary mixers under inert-gas blanketing at 160–190°C. The unsaturated polybutadiene mid-block requires oxidative stabilization; viscosity drift during 2 h holding at 180°C is a practical quality indicator. T-peel adhesion is evaluated by ISO 11339:2010, loop tack by ASTM D6195-03, and shear adhesion failure temperature by ASTM D4498-07. Solvent-borne formulations commonly run at 20–40 wt% solids; complete polymer dissolution is achieved with toluene or hydrocarbon solvent blends, but residual solvent limits are set by local VOC regulations. Published data for TR2787 in specific adhesive matrices is limited; tackifier compatibility must be tested by glass transition temperature, loop tack, and elevated-temperature shear.

Drying, Storage, and Handling Limits Are Defined by Pellet Moisture and Blocking Tendency

TR2787 pellets can be stored in dry indoor conditions below 40°C. Pellet blocking is a temperature- and pressure-dependent failure mode; high ambient temperature and tall stacking can fuse pellets and reduce free-flow. The manufacturer’s safe storage guidance normally limits stack height and recommends first-in-first-out inventory rotation. If surface moisture exceeds 0.1 wt% by ISO 248-1:2019, pre-drying at 70°C for 2 h in a desiccant dryer is typical before extrusion; ultra-dry processing is generally not required for non-condensation uses. During conveying, high-velocity pneumatic transfer can generate pellet fines and static charge; system grounding and gentle conveying air speed reduce dust explosion and fouling risks. The grade should not be exposed to hot surfaces above 220°C during start-up or shutdown because the polybutadiene phase degrades and forms sticky decomposition residues.

Regulatory status for TR2787 must be obtained from the safety data sheet and current registration dossiers. For European Union supply, REACH registration is required; for food-contact use, 21 CFR 177.1810 or applicable national legislation may apply to styrene block polymers, but end-use migration data are required. Under RoHS, thermoplastic elastomers are generally outside the scope unless incorporated into electrical and electronic equipment; downstream users should verify specific article-level obligations. The unsaturated butadiene mid-block and hydrocarbon stabilizers do not provide solvent resistance; compatibility with solvents and fuels should be confirmed by volume swell testing according to ISO 1817:2015.

Production-scale qualification uses a start-up batch with 5 wt% TR2787 in the target bitumen or polymer matrix to establish torque, pressure, and temperature baselines before scale-up. The resulting baseline is then compared with the intended production rate and mixer power limit. If the melt temperature at the die exceeds 220°C during the trial, throughput reduction or screw-profile adjustment is required. No adjustment to antioxidant level should be made without repeating the full thermal stability test plan.
