Commercial butene-based LLDPE 7042 grades are specified with a density of 0.918–0.922 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt flow index of 2.0 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190°C and 2.16 kg. On high-stalk blown-film lines with screw L/D ratios of 30:1 and die diameters between 250 mm and 400 mm, the resin is processed at melt temperatures from 180°C to 210°C, with die gaps of 1.8–2.4 mm and blow-up ratios held between 2.2 and 2.8. A representative agricultural film formulation is 80 wt% LLDPE 7042, 15 wt% LDPE 2420H or equivalent, and 5 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch based on HALS with 10–15 wt% TiO₂ in the carrier. The LDPE fraction raises bubble stability and reduces the severe machine-direction tear path that occurs when butene LLDPE is processed at high stalk heights. Frost line height is normally set at 6–10 die diameters. A lower frost line increases transverse direction tear but reduces dart impact resistance, while a higher frost line improves bubble cooling and output but increases film haze and blocking tendency. Internal bubble cooling controls frost line position and improves gauge uniformity; without IBC, nip blocking at thicknesses above 100 µm becomes the main output constraint. Compliance for greenhouse and silage covers is assessed against EN 13206-1 and EN 13206-2 for covering films, with REACH Article 33 declarations required when UV stabilizers or anti-fog additives contain intentionally released substances. The finished film is used for greenhouse cladding, silage stretch covers, and mulch films with thicknesses from 30 µm to 150 µm.
In vertical form-fill-seal packaging of frozen vegetables, bakery goods, and powdered food, LLDPE 7042 is used in monolayer or coextruded films at thicknesses of 50–120 µm. Compliance is declared under U.S. FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 for olefin polymers and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm². China GB 9685-2016 is applied when antioxidant or slip additive carry-over from masterbatch must be confirmed. A typical formulation is 0.1–0.3 wt% erucamide slip agent and 0.05–0.2 wt% synthetic silica antiblock dispersed in 2–4 wt% LLDPE-based masterbatch. Seal initiation temperature measured by ASTM F88-21 on films with LLDPE 7042 skin layers is generally 90–105°C. Heat-seal settings on VFFS equipment are set to 115–135°C with dwell times of 0.3–0.5 s and jaw pressures of 0.3–0.6 MPa. Set temperatures above 230°C at the die lip create oxidized gel specks and reduce seal strength stability. Blown-film process parameters include a die gap of 1.5–2.0 mm, melt temperature 195–220°C, blow-up ratio 2.0–2.6, and a tandem winder tension of 8–14 N/100 mm of web width. The end products include frozen food bags, produce bags, bread bags, and cheese interleavers. Drop impact is checked according to ASTM D1709-22, and Elmendorf tear is checked according to ASTM D1922-23.

Heavy-duty shipping sacks and industrial liners made from LLDPE 7042 target packaging for mineral fillers, fertilizers, salt, peat, resin powders, and hazardous solids that require inner sift-proof liners. The critical processing distinction is that the formulation is filled or blended for stiffness and creep resistance. A representative starting point is 70–85 wt% LLDPE 7042 with 15–30 wt% recycled LLDPE/LDPE or high-molecular-weight HDPE, and optionally 5–10 wt% calcium carbonate masterbatch when block stacking requires reduced slip. The film is extruded on heavy-gauge blown-film lines with die gaps of 1.8–2.5 mm, blow-up ratios of 2.0–2.3, and melt temperatures of 190–230°C. A low frost line of 4–6 die diameters is used to promote bubble stability at high gauge. Testing for the final sack structure follows ISO 21898 for FIBCs when the film is converted into baffle bags, ASTM D1709-22 for dart impact of the film substrate, ASTM D882-18 for tensile elongation, and ASTM D5276-19 for loaded-container drop impact. Regulatory compliance for industrial bags exporting to the EU requires a REACH registration for the polymer and a declaration that the sack is not a food-contact article. The end products are FIBC inner liners, heavy-duty PE shipping sacks, chemical bag-in-box liners, and packaging for bulk rock wool and construction adhesives.
Cast stretch-film production using LLDPE 7042 is concentrated in hand pallet wrap and bundling film where moderate stretch and controlled cling are acceptable. Butene comonomer limits the ultimate pre-stretch ratio compared with octene metallocene grades. The practical stretch window on a powered pre-stretch unit is 120–180%, not the 200–300% achieved with higher-alpha-olefin grades. A useful three-layer cast-film structure is 15–25 wt% LLDPE 7042 in the cling layer, 60–70 wt% LLDPE 7042 in the core, and 10–20 wt% metallocene LLDPE in the release layer. Polyisobutylene cling additive is dosed at 0.5–1.5 wt% in the cling layer only. Process conditions on a 1,500 mm cast line include melt temperatures of 230–260°C, die gap 0.4–0.6 mm, air gap 20–40 mm, and chill roll temperatures of 18–24°C. Line speed is limited by chill roll heat removal capacity. Film gauge of 12–25 µm at speeds above 300 m/min can show transverse gauge bands if roll water flow is below 25 L/min. Cling is tested to ASTM D5458-23 and puncture to ASTM D5748-23. Compliance for stretch film used in indirect food contact is limited to FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 when the film is not intended to contact food directly. REACH applies to the cling additive package. Edge trim reprocessing is normally held below 10 wt% of total throughput to prevent gel formation. The output is converted into hand wrap rolls, furniture wrap, and bundling film for logistics.
Extrusion coating lines process LLDPE 7042 only in blends with LDPE because neat butene LLDPE exhibits excessive neck-in and poor draw-down at air gaps above 150 mm. A substitution range of 20–40 wt% LLDPE 7042 in a 60–80 wt% LDPE extrusion-coating grade lowers seal initiation temperature and improves hot-tack in aseptic carton structures, but the melt temperature must be held between 280°C and 320°C. Above 320°C, oxidative degradation in the air gap produces acrid odor and reduces adhesion to aluminium foil. Equipment typically uses 90–120 mm extruders with L/D 30:1, die gap 0.5–0.8 mm, air gap 150–250 mm, and line speed 100–250 m/min. Adhesion to paperboard and treated aluminium is measured by TAPPI/ANSI T 494 om-22, film tensile by ISO 527-3:2018, and hot-tack by ASTM F1921-23. Food-contact compliance for extrusion-coated board is assessed under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with a total migration limit of 10 mg/dm² and FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520. The end structures are coated paper cups, sachet and liquid-packaging laminates, soap wrappers, and medical lidding coated onto paper.
Injection moulding of LLDPE 7042 is not the primary commercial outlet, but the resin is used as a blend component for flexible lids, overcaps, and thick-wall containers where low-temperature impact resistance is required. The blend is ordinarily 50–70 wt% LLDPE 7042 with 30–50 wt% LDPE to raise the melt flow and reduce clamp pressure. For closure-like overcaps, a melt flow of 2.0 g/10 min can be raised to 4–6 g/10 min by LDPE addition, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and must be verified on a trial tool. Barrel temperatures are 180–215°C, injection pressure 70–100 MPa, mould temperature 20–35°C, and screw back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa. Compliance for non-food molded parts is normally REACH and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II. If food-contact lids are produced, FDA 21 CFR § 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 apply. LLDPE 7042 also functions as a carrier resin in colour and additive masterbatches processed on twin-screw extruders with L/D 40:1 at 180–210°C, because the 0.918–0.922 g/cm³ density and butene backbone tolerate filler loadings of 40–60 wt% calcium carbonate or carbon black without severe screw torque. The terminal products are injection-moulded overcaps, flexible storage boxes, masterbatches for blown film, and impact-modifier blends for recycled polyethylene streams.
