In high-volume lipstick cap and compact lid moulding, Luran SAN 358N Q486 TR77762 is injected into multi-cavity hot-runner tools with 8 to 32 cavities. The barrel profile is staged from 200°C in the feed section to 235°C in the metering section, with a nozzle setpoint of 230°C to 240°C. A desiccant dryer at 80°C for 2 h to 4 h maintains residual moisture below 0.05%; hydrolysis at melt temperatures above 250°C otherwise produces silver streaking and splay across polished cosmetic surfaces. The hopper throat is water-cooled because bridging is a known field failure when ambient air exceeds 35°C and 80% RH. The cavity steel is supplied with SPI/SPE A-2 finish and diamond-polished to A-1 where the outer lip sits in front of an illuminated display. Holding pressure is set between 600 bar and 1,000 bar. Gate freeze is confirmed when part mass variation drops below 0.1% across three successive shots. Shrinkage is measured according to ISO 294-4 after 24 h conditioning at 23°C and 50% RH per ISO 291. For fragrance-prone closures, chemical contact is screened by ISO 175 immersion at 23°C for 168 h in ethanol/water blends and ester-based fragrance oils. Environmental stress-cracking risk is highest in walls below 1.0 mm and at snap-fit undercuts under hoop stress; trials with the actual filling formulation are required before tool release. Decoration by hot stamping and pad printing is acceptable when adhesion is verified with the ISO 2409 cross-cut method. Food-contact conformity is not assumed; the end product must meet EU Regulation 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1040 conditions, with a supplier lot declaration for the specific Q486 colour code.
The substitution is viable only when impact service is moderate. The grade is used in juicer bowls, blender jars with ribbed walls, measuring cups, and lid windows, not in high-drop floor-standing blender containers. The SAN matrix does not release Bisphenol A; this is a regulatory distinction, not a mechanical equivalence. Wall thickness is normally specified between 2.0 mm and 3.5 mm. Hot-fill service above 80°C is outside the recommended continuous-use boundary because the Vicat softening temperature is determined under ISO 306 method B50 and must be checked against the current datasheet. Load-bearing parts such as jar threads are assessed with ISO 75-2 HDT/A at 1.8 MPa. Injection is performed with a three-zone screw of 20:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.2:1 to 2.8:1. The mould is held at 40°C to 70°C, with the upper half of the range used for high-gloss side walls. Below 30°C flow lines appear in 2.5 mm thick bowls; above 70°C cycle time extends beyond 30 s without proportional clarity gain. Dishwasher exposure at 65°C for 1,000 cycles may generate microcracking in highly stressed gate areas. Food-contact status is end-product dependent under EU 10/2011 migration testing and FDA 21 CFR 177.1040. The finished appliance must meet IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-14 applicable force and opening tests. Impact values are measured with ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched specimens; the resulting values are lower than those of polycarbonate, requiring wider radii in rib roots and gate bosses.
Cavity pressure sensors are installed behind the polished window surface because the 10 mm optical path length in a transparent diagnostic cuvette must not vary by more than ±0.05 mm. Luran SAN 358N is processed at a melt temperature of 240°C to 250°C to reduce internal haze caused by partially melted resin. The cavity wall is held at 50°C to 60°C. A +0.05 mm per 100 mm linear expansion allowance is applied to the cavity steel as a starting value, followed by shrinkage verification under ISO 294-4 after 24 h at 23°C/50% RH. Luminous transmittance and haze are measured according to ASTM D1003-21 on polished plaques; for 2 mm thick parts, haze values above 1.5% indicate a polish or moisture problem. Steam sterilisation at 121°C is outside the operational boundary of the material; use is limited to cold reagent contact. Ethanol and dilute acid compatibility is screened by ISO 175 immersion at 23°C for 168 h. When flatness below 0.05 mm is required, injection-compression is used to reduce internal stress. The switchover point from velocity to pressure control is held within ±2 MPa cavity pressure. For in vitro diagnostic disposables, compliance with IVDR is the end-product responsibility; no claim to ISO 10993 biocompatibility is made for this grade.

Transparent lenses for appliance display panels are moulded in valve-gated hot-runner systems. The melt is injected at 245°C and the hot-runner manifold is held 5°C to 10°C above the nozzle setpoint. Total residence time in the plastication unit and manifold is kept below 5 min to limit yellowing of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. The screw is operated with a back pressure from 3 bar to 8 bar; screw recovery speed is capped at 100 rpm to avoid shear heating above 255°C. For lenses longer than 60 mm, two or four valve gates are used instead of a single centre gate. Weld lines are positioned at low-illumination border zones rather than in the centre of the light path. The melt cushion is maintained at 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm. Injection velocity is staged at 60 mm/s for the first 20% of stroke, 120 mm/s for the mid-fill, and 40 mm/s near the end of fill to suppress flow marks and gate blush. Mould temperature is controlled from 40°C to 70°C with pressurised water. A manifold pressure drop above 250 bar across the hot-runner system indicates partial gate freeze-off; the manifold temperature is raised in 2°C increments. Dimensional checks are made after conditioning per ISO 291. Luminous transmittance is verified by ASTM D1003-21. The grade is unfilled; therefore no fibre orientation marks are present. For appliance enclosures, flammability classification is limited to UL 94 HB at the tested wall thickness; glow-wire performance of the end product is evaluated separately under IEC 60695-2-11.
For non-pressurised water filter bowls and flow meters, Luran SAN 358N is specified for clarity and dimensional stability in cold water. Hydrostatic testing is performed at 0.3 MPa for 1,000 h at 23°C when the bowl is tubular, using ISO 1167-1 methodology; box-like housings follow manufacturer-specific pneumatic protocols. Threaded sections are derated below the short-term burst pressure because published data for this exact grade under cyclic 0 MPa to 0.35 MPa potable-water service is limited. Certification to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 must be confirmed grade-by-grade and lot-by-lot. Wall thickness is specified between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm. Beryllium-copper inserts are used in the thread region to maintain a cavity surface temperature of 70°C without extending cycle time. Resin is dried at 80°C for 2 h minimum to a residual moisture below 0.05%. Direct pin gating into the cylindrical bowl centre is used; the resulting radial flow produces a low-stress weld line at the outer flange. Chemical resistance is screened in 5 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution per ISO 175. Long-term exposure below pH 6 or above pH 9 is not recommended. Creep deflection under continuous load is assessed with ISO 899-2; service above 60°C is outside the acceptable range for load-bearing threaded closures.
Rulers, mechanical pencil bodies, and transparent paper-clip dispensers are produced in high-cavitation cold-runner and hot-runner moulds. The colourant masterbatch is kept below 2 wt%; higher addition reduces melt strength and increases visible streak depth. First article inspection is performed on a two-cavity cold-runner tool before hot-runner optimisation. Shrinkage is measured per ISO 294-4 after 24 h conditioning under ISO 291. The barrel profile is set from 210°C to 240°C. For flow paths longer than 120 mm, the metering zone is raised to 250°C; this improves filling but shortens the allowable residence time to 4 min. Dimensional tolerance classes are assigned according to DIN 16742; sub-0.02 mm repeatability is possible only when cavity pressure control is used. Post-mould warpage is minimised by cooling fixtures held at 15°C. Haze and transmission are checked with ASTM D1003-21. Ruler graduation printing is pad-printed; adhesion is verified with ISO 2409. Solvent bonding of transparent sleeves is acceptable only when validated on the actual joint geometry; bond strength is recorded as a lap-shear value and compared after 24 h conditioning at 23°C.
Control knobs with transparent indicator rings are injection-moulded from Luran SAN 358N and joined to dark ABS substrates by two-shot overmoulding. In the first shot, the ABS substrate is moulded at 230°C; in the second shot, the SAN ring is overmoulded at 245°C. Substrate preheating to 80°C improves interfacial adhesion at the styrenic bond line. The bond line is inspected by microtome sectioning under 100× magnification; voiding above 0.2 mm is rejected. The transparent ring must survive a pull-off force of 50 N applied perpendicular to the knob axis; this test is end-product specific and follows IEC 60335-1 relevant annexes. Warpage of the ring is measured with a digital optical comparator after conditioning per ISO 291. Melt residence time is held under 4 min to avoid yellowing. The grade does not contain flame retardants; end-product glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 is required for unattended appliance parts. Solvent contact with ketone-based cleaners should be avoided; exposure is screened by ISO 175 for 72 h at 23°C. Dimensional checks of the overmoulded ring follow ISO 294-4. Printed dial markings on the outer face are verified for adhesion by the ISO 2409 cross-cut method after 48 h at 23°C/50% RH.

INEOS Styrolution Luran SAN 358N Q486 TR77762 is an amorphous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer supplied as natural pellets under a manufacturer-specific delivery and traceability suffix. The Q486 TR77762 designation identifies the packaging form and batch traceability within the INEOS Styrolution order system; it does not alter the base resin composition or the published property set. The product is a high-flow injection moulding grade intended for thin-wall parts requiring transparency, surface hardness, and controlled chemical resistance. Its amorphous structure eliminates crystallisation-driven post-shrinkage and gives predictable isotropic shrinkage. The material is characterised by a melt volume-flow rate of 25 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022. Compared with lower-flow SAN grades, the higher MVR permits shorter fill times in multi-cavity tools; compared with general-purpose polystyrene, the copolymer offers improved resistance to oils and alkaline cleaning agents, although notched impact strength remains limited.
Typical values for the base resin are consolidated below from the manufacturer’s published data. They are not batch-release limits unless a certificate of analysis is supplied. Test standards are the current ISO designations applied by INEOS Styrolution for Luran SAN grades.

On production-scale injection moulding lines with general-purpose single-flight screws, the material is normally processed at a melt-temperature set point between 220 °C and 260 °C and a mould-temperature band of 40 °C to 80 °C. Screw L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2:1 to 3:1 are typical for homogeneous plastication. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h in a dehumidified-air dryer with a dew point no higher than -20 °C is required when moisture content exceeds 0.1 wt% or when ambient relative humidity is above 60%. Failure to dry the feedstock under these conditions produces splay, silver streaks, and surface roughness in transparent parts. On multi-cavity hot-runner tools with valve-gated drops, gate-vestige cracking has been observed when mould temperature falls below 40 °C or when holding pressure is released before gate freeze-off; the defect is more likely in wall sections below 0.8 mm because the gate skin solidifies before the part core is packed.
Rheological characterisation by capillary rheometry shows shear-thinning behaviour. At injection shear rates above 1000 s⁻¹, the apparent viscosity is substantially lower than at low shear; this supports filling of thin ribs and bosses but also requires larger gates and controlled flow-front advancement to avoid jetting. For transparent parts, vents of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm depth and a cold slug well are typical to reduce gas traps. At melt temperatures above 250 °C, residence time should be held below 5 min; above 260 °C, thermal yellowing and flashing in hot-runner systems become significant. Below 220 °C, the SAN melt viscosity increases sufficiently to cause short shot, gate freeze-off, and orientation-induced warpage in wall sections below 1.0 mm.
Transparent closures, cosmetic jars, small appliance lenses, and diagnostic instrument windows are typical application fields. Optical quality is assessed on moulded plaques by ISO 13468-1 for total luminous transmittance and ISO 14782 for haze. For Luran SAN 358N, total transmittance above 88% at 550 nm for 2 mm plaques is commonly obtained with polished mould surfaces and adequate venting; haze values remain below 2% under properly controlled moulding conditions. These optical results are process-dependent. Excessive melt temperature or slow injection speed creates flow lines and surface defects that raise haze without changing the bulk resin specification. Chemical resistance is evaluated under ISO 175. The SAN matrix resists aqueous detergents, dilute mineral acids, dilute alkalis, and many cosmetic formulations. It is not resistant to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents; contact with those media can cause environmental stress cracking and softening. For cosmetic products containing essential oils, migration and stress-cracking testing on the finished article is necessary. Migration kinetics of low-molecular-weight species through the SAN matrix are Fickian at ambient temperature; diffusion coefficients are temperature-dependent, and the converter must verify overall migration under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 if food contact is claimed.
Compared with general-purpose polystyrene, Luran SAN 358N Q486 TR77762 provides higher surface hardness and better resistance to oils and alkaline cleaning agents, but its notched impact strength remains lower than ABS. Compared with Luran SAN 368R, this grade offers a higher melt volume-flow rate: 25 cm³/10 min versus approximately 12 cm³/10 min under the same 220 °C/10 kg condition. That difference lowers injection pressure and shortens fill time in thin-wall geometries. The typical Vicat softening temperature of the 358N grade is approximately 4 K lower than that of 368R. The selection therefore depends on whether cycle time or upper service temperature is the controlling variable. Luran SAN 378P occupies a separate position in the flow–heat-resistance envelope; published data for a direct 358N-to-378P property comparison is limited, and current product datasheets should be requested from INEOS Styrolution before substituting grades in an existing validation file. In part design, the low notched impact strength requires generous radii and low imposed strain in snap-fits; sharp corners and high residual stress from packing should be avoided.
Material regulatory status is application-dependent. The base SAN resin may be suitable for use in food-contact articles when the finished article meets the requirements of 21 CFR 177.1040 in the United States and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 in the European Union; migration testing per EN 1186-1:2002 is normally performed on the final article. The grade is manufactured in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for REACH and, per the current candidate list, is not supplied with substances of very high concern above 0.1 wt%. For electrical and electronic equipment, the product is assessed against Directive 2011/65/EU and the amending Directive (EU) 2015/863; restricted phthalates and heavy metals are not present above the specified thresholds.
| Application domain | Applicable requirement | Condition for conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Food contact, United States | 21 CFR 177.1040 | Finished article migration testing required |
| Food contact, European Union | Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 | Overall migration testing per EN 1186-1:2002 |
| REACH | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 | SVHC below 0.1 wt% per current candidate list |
| RoHS | Directive 2011/65/EU, amended by (EU) 2015/863 | Restricted substances below threshold for EEE applications |
| Medical devices | ISO 10993-1:2018 | Converter validation required; no blanket medical certification |
Operational boundaries are defined by drying, melt temperature, and solvent exposure. At relative humidity above 60%, pre-drying is mandatory. Normal melt temperature should not exceed 260 °C; above 260 °C, thermal yellowing accelerates and uncontrolled flashing may occur in hot-runner systems. Avoid amine-based processing aids or nitrogen-containing colour concentrates that accelerate yellowing above 230 °C. The resin should be stored in sealed containers at ambient temperature below 40 °C and protected from direct sunlight. Regrind can be added at levels up to 20 wt% in non-aesthetic parts; higher regrind fractions reduce transparency and notched impact strength because of repeated thermal history. The product is not suitable for prolonged outdoor UV exposure unless UV-stabilised or protected by a suitable coating. These limits are application-dependent and do not replace converter validation of the finished article under the intended use conditions.
