Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA KR2867CWU
Unpainted exterior automotive trim such as mirror housings, cowl-vent grilles, wiper-arm covers, and tailgate garnish frames is injection-moulded from Luran S ASA KR2867CWU under a processing window that prioritises surface flatness and weathering capability over cycle-time reduction. The acrylic ester phase of the ASA terpolymer provides the UV-stable impact component, which allows black pigmented exterior parts to retain surface gloss after xenon-arc exposure according to SAE J2527; grade-specific colour masterbatches must be verified because pigment carrier resins alter melt elasticity at louvre ribs and can generate visible streak formation. The high-flow behaviour of KR2867CWU is indicated by a typical melt volume rate of 15 cm³/10 min at 220°C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1, and this permits filling of 0.8–1.2 mm louvre ribs from a 2.0–2.5 mm main wall without excessive gas trapping. Before processing, the polymer is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 4–6 h to a residual moisture level of ≤0.03 wt%; higher moisture produces hydrolysis splay on the unpainted surface and cannot be corrected by secondary finishing. Melt temperature is held between 240°C and 260°C, with the lower half of the range preferred where black colour concentrate is run at 3 wt%. Mould surface temperature is maintained at 60–80°C through hot water thermolators, and the tool uses direct edge gates with land thickness of 0.5–0.8 mm to ensure gate freeze before pack pressure decays. Holding pressure is set at 50–70 MPa for 6–10 s, while a screw retreat of 4–5 mm cushion is maintained to avoid decompression splay. Rib-to-wall ratio is kept at 0.6 or below on visible grained surfaces; raised shut-offs of 0.2 mm at louvre ends prevent weld-line sink. Draft angles are 1.5° on grain surfaces and 3° on bosses. Post-mould shrinkage for a 2.0 mm wall is typically 0.4–0.7% according to ISO 294-4, and this is used to correct boss positions before tooling cut. Terminal components include cowl-vent grilles mounted above the plenum chamber, mirror housings exposed to SAE J2527 cycles, and tailgate garnish frames assembled with snap-fits without painting.

Where Outdoor Electrical Enclosures Require Impact Retention After Xenon Pre-conditioning

For outdoor junction boxes, photovoltaic combiner enclosures, and antenna radome frames moulded from KR2867CWU, the specification chain begins with IP65 sealing and unpainted UV resistance without post-mould coating. The sealing surface is a flat flange with wall stock 2.5–3.0 mm; the gasket groove is core-formed with a positional tolerance of ±0.1 mm to seat EPDM cord seals. A film gate along the short side of the flange is preferred over a pin gate because gate vestige on the sealing face creates a leak path. Gate thickness is 1.0–1.5 mm to delay freeze and pack the flange fully; weld lines at cable-entry bosses are moved into non-sealing zones by adding overflow wells 5 mm beyond the weld line. The mould is run at 240–260°C melt temperature and 70°C cavity temperature; holding pressure is 60 MPa until gate freeze, followed by cooling time of 15–25 s for flat-flange geometries. After moulding, parts subject to continuous gasket compression are annealed at 85°C for 2 h to relax moulded-in stress before gasket insertion. The absence of mineral fillers avoids loss of surface resistivity in outdoor condensation conditions, but the unfilled grade limits creep resistance; therefore load-bearing enclosures with continuous cable tension require brass inserts instead of self-tapping screws in direct plastic bosses. The relevant compliance anchors are listed below; grade-specific UL 746C outdoor suitability must be confirmed on the current yellow card because colour, thickness, and batch-specific UV package determine the recognised rating.

StandardDesignation/clauseCondition or acceptance criterion applied to enclosure
IEC 60529IP65Dust-tight enclosure and water jets; flatness of sealing flange after 24 h at 23°C
UL 94HBThickness as moulded; minimum thickness verified against grade-specific yellow card
ISO 4892-2Cycle 1Xenon-arc weathering; surface evaluation for cracking after preconditioning
ISO 179/1eANotched CharpyImpact reproducibility at gasket bosses after assembly

Two-stroke garden equipment engine shrouds and fan volutes impose fuel vapour exposure and vibration; KR2867CWU is selected for line-trimmer motor shrouds, leaf-blower fan volutes, and chain-saw intake covers where low-temperature impact at −20°C determines material choice. KR2867CWU is unfilled; stiffness in fan volutes is generated by ribbed back walls and boss gussets rather than glass fibre. The unfilled grade avoids tool wear in high-cavitation production and provides a smooth surface for corporate branding, but a tensile modulus of approximately 2500 MPa under ISO 527-2 confines structural load paths to short, repeated rib spacing of 12–15 mm pitch. Nominal wall stock is 2.5 mm in fan volute sections and 1.8 mm in motor shroud walls; reinforcing ribs are gated at a rib-to-wall ratio of 0.5 so that sink does not appear on the visible surface. Fan volute tools use sequential valve gates to displace weld lines away from the scroll tongue, because a weld line at the tongue generates a stress concentration during blade-pass vibration. Fuel-resistant colour concentrates with SAN carrier are run at 3 wt%; post-mould painting is eliminated, which avoids delamination at trapped fuel-vapour zones. End-product safety for electric tools is evaluated under IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2, but the unfilled ASA grade is typically UL 94 HB, so live-contact separation distances and flame-retardant variants are required where glow-wire ignition is in the same subassembly. Cycle time for a 2.5 mm wall is 35–50 s with a cavity temperature of 70°C; process validation uses a short-shot set at 95% fill to confirm the valve-gate sequence without overpacking the tongue region.

Why Does Rib-to-Wall Ratio Above 0.6 Shift Post-Mould Shrinkage in Thin-Wall Climate-Control Panels?

In thin-wall climate-control fascias for light commercial vehicles, nominal wall stock is reduced to 1.2–1.5 mm to lower mass and cycle time. KR2867CWU fills these sections at a melt temperature of 250–265°C, but the high-flow acrylic ester phase produces anisotropic post-mould shrinkage when flow length exceeds 120 mm and the cavity is not uniformly packed. Rib-to-wall ratio is maintained at 0.5–0.6; a 1.2 mm wall therefore uses ribs no thicker than 0.72 mm. If a design requires a 0.9 mm rib to anchor a rotary knob boss, local wall stock is increased to 1.8 mm around the rib root or a steel insert is added to rebalance cooling. Gate placement at the neutral axis of the panel prevents elliptical warpage. For a 300 mm × 180 mm panel, two side gates at the long edge are used, with gate diameter 0.8–1.0 mm and cold runner diameter 6 mm. Melt pressure at the gate must exceed 35 MPa to suppress sink at the display window opening. Holding time is set from cavity-pressure transducer recordings as gate freeze plus 2 s, not from a fixed timer; this prevents underfeeding of thick boss pads around rotary knobs. After moulding, parts are gauged at 23°C and 50% RH for 24 h; critical dimensions are compared with ISO 294-4 free-shrinkage plaques to separate material shrinkage from mould deflection. For climate-control panels inside the vehicle, low-emission behaviour is generally expected after sufficient drying, but OEM-specific VDA 270 odour and DIN 75201 fogging data must be obtained from the current material PPAP dossier.

In washing machine and dishwasher control-panel carriers, alkaline detergent splash is more important than UV radiation; KR2867CWU is moulded into high-gloss panel carriers with a 2.0 mm main wall, snap-fit towers for membrane switches, and a recessed lens gasket seat. Alkaline detergent resistance is provided by the SAN matrix and the acrylic ester rubber; internal corners are held above 0.5 mm radius to prevent stress cracking during exposure to 1% sodium hydroxide solution at 50°C for 24 h. Draft angle is 1.5° on visible surfaces and 3° on snap-fit towers; thread-forming screw bosses use an outside diameter 2.5× the nominal screw outer diameter and a wall thickness 0.6× the adjacent wall. Melt temperature is run at 240–260°C with mould temperature 60–80°C. For washing-machine consoles with total shot weight above 250 g, a multicavity hot-runner tool with sequential valve gating prevents visible weld lines at the display opening. Terminal components include dishwasher front-panel carriers and washing-machine control console housings, both tested after assembly under IEC 60335-2-5 and IEC 60335-2-7 end-product standards as applicable.

Injection-Moulded Window Corner Keys, Drainage Channels, and Ventilation Flaps

Window corner keys, ventilation flaps, and drainage channels made from KR2867CWU use the grade's low water absorption of approximately 0.35% under ISO 62 and weathering resistance in white and woodgrain colourways. A 45° corner key with a wall of 2.5 mm and a squareness tolerance of ±0.05 mm is moulded with an anti-deformation gate at the centre of the key arm; the part is annealed at 85°C for 2 h after demoulding to relax moulded-in stress before insertion into PVC profile chambers. Because the corner key functions as a structural connector, rib thickness is kept to 0.5× wall stock and the key arm is reinforced with a cross-rib pattern at 15 mm pitch. Processing uses melt temperature 245–260°C and mould temperature 70°C; the high-flow grade allows filling of 0.6 mm thin hinge sections over 15 mm length without short shots. Ventilation flaps with an integrally moulded hinge are cycle-tested to 50,000 cycles at −10°C; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so grade-specific hinge validation with the final colourant is required before series release. Drainage channels with trough depth of 8 mm and wall stock of 1.5 mm are produced using edge gating and a hold-pressure profile that fills the channel bottom before the lip to avoid sink at the top edge.

Optical clarity is not the operating requirement in LED diffuser grilles and occupancy-sensor covers; the polymer acts as a UV-stable structural frame that retains impact after continuous exposure to LED radiation at a case temperature of 60°C. KR2867CWU is moulded into 1.5 mm grille ribs and 2.0 mm frame walls; the high-flow melt enables five-zone filling without excessive shear heating. The natural colour is translucent, not water-clear; a white masterbatch at 0.5–1.0 wt% is typically added for light diffusion, and the exact loading is adjusted to achieve the target luminance distribution without changing wall thickness below the UL 94 HB limit. Screw bosses are fed from the adjacent frame wall with a wall thickness 0.6× the frame wall to minimise sink; the lens seat uses a concave edge profile to avoid shadowing. Drying before moulding is 80°C for 4 h; melt temperature is kept at 245–255°C to avoid yellowing under long residence time. Terminal components include ceiling-occupancy sensor housings and high-bay luminaire diffuser frames, where dimensional stability prevents gap formation between the diffuser and the metallic housing.
