Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA KR2864C

In unpainted exterior automotive trim programmes, Luran® S KR2864C is specified where the part must retain low-gloss surface appearance after 1,500 h of SAE J2527 xenon-arc exposure while avoiding post-mould painting. The grade is compounded at 100 parts by weight virgin resin with 1.5–3.0 parts ASA-based colour masterbatch, up to 25 parts regrind from sprues and runners, and 0.1–0.2 parts external mould release only where ejection is marginal. Pre-drying is performed in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h with a supply-air dew point of -30 °C or lower; residual moisture above 0.05 % produces splay on the surface and reduces notched impact strength by hydrolysing the acrylate ester phase. Injection moulding is run on a conventional 22:1–24:1 L/D screw with check ring, hot runner manifold heated to 250–260 °C, and valve gates with no dead zones. Melt temperature is maintained at 240–260 °C and mould wall temperature at 60–80 °C. Packing pressure is held at 30–50 MPa with a hold time of 5–8 s and cooling time of 15–25 s depending on wall thickness. Production audits on 2.5–4.0 mm wall mirror-housing tools show that exceeding 25 wt% regrind causes a measurable drop in ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact at -30 °C, with brittle hinge breaks appearing at gate remnants. The relevant compliance set includes IATF 16949 process controls, ISO 4892-2 and SAE J2527 weathering, ISO 179-1/1eA impact, ISO 1133-1 melt volume-flow rate verification, and REACH SVHC reporting under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Terminal parts include mirror housings, cowl vent grilles, B-pillar appliqués, radiator grille surrounds, and antenna base covers.

Why Do Outdoor Telecom Enclosures Move From Flame-Retarded PC/ABS Blends to Unpainted ASA?

Outdoor telecom and smart-meter enclosure programmes specify Luran® S KR2864C for the combination of UV-stable black surface, low-temperature impact, and processability in thin-wall boxes. The compounding ratio for black telecom covers is 100 parts virgin resin, 20–30 parts reprocessed sprue and rejected covers, 1.5–2.5 parts carbon-black masterbatch, and 0.5–1.0 part processing stabiliser only if multiple regrind cycles are used. Moulding is performed with melt temperature 245–265 °C, mould temperature 65–80 °C, and clamp force of 4–6 kN/cm² projected area for housings with 2.0–3.0 mm wall. Back pressure is limited to 3–8 bar to avoid excessive shear heating in hot-runner drops, and screw rotation is kept at 40–80 rpm for residence times below 8 min. Compliance for outdoor electrical enclosures includes IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, IEC 60529 ingress protection, UL 746C for UV and water exposure, UL 94 HB flame classification at the certified thickness, and IEC 60695-2-10 glow-wire testing when specified. The limiting boundary is that KR2864C is not inherently flame-retardant; systems requiring UL 94 V-0 or GWFI 850 °C at 1.5 mm demand a separately qualified FR formulation or an alternative grade. UL 746C f1 recognition is also thickness- and colour-specific, so any change from the certified black masterbatch load must be re-qualified before series production. Terminal components include 5G small-cell cable splice closures, smart-meter housing covers, CCTV camera housing shells, and weatherproof distribution box lids.

Photovoltaic DC Junction Box Housings and Connector Collars Under IEC 62790 Load

Because DC junction boxes remain exposed to daily cell-temperature swings and high UV irradiance in rooftop arrays, Luran® S KR2864C is used for black injection-moulded housings and MC4-compatible connector collars. The recommended mix is 100 parts virgin resin, 1.0–2.0 parts high-black UV masterbatch, 5–15 parts ASA-compatible impact modifier only where the connector snap-fit must survive installation in cold climates below -30 °C, and 0.2–0.4 parts anti-static lubricant if demoulding of deep ribs is unstable. Processing on an 80–120 t injection machine uses melt temperature 240–260 °C, mould temperature 70–80 °C, and injection speed 30–60 mm/s screw advance to avoid jetting at the cable gland area. The higher mould-wall temperature is not optional for connector collars; lower mould temperatures create frozen-in stress at snap-fit roots, which has produced field cracking during cable insertion in high-mountain installations. The relevant compliance set includes IEC 62790 for PV junction boxes, IEC 60529 IP65/IP67 sealing, IEC 60112 comparative tracking index, ISO 4892-2 method A weathering, UL 746C f1 for outdoor plastics, and potential DC arc resistance testing per IEC 60695-2-20 when mandated by module certification. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for CTI after high-black masterbatch; therefore, each final colour batch must be re-qualified under IEC 60112 before release. Terminal parts include PV junction box bodies, DC connector collars, microinverter housing covers, and cable strain-relief clamps.

Roof vent collars, skylight flashing rings, louvre shutter end caps, and gutter union brackets are moulded from Luran® S KR2864C when the part must match dark-brown or graphite exterior colour schemes without chalking or fading under northern European UV and rain cycling. The formulation for these construction fittings uses 100 parts virgin resin, 10–25 parts regrind from runner systems, 3–5 parts weatherable ASA colour concentrate, and 0.3–0.6 parts external lubricant to protect thin snap features during ejection. Pre-drying follows the same 80 °C for 4 h schedule; melt temperature is set at 235–255 °C and mould temperature at 55–75 °C to balance surface gloss against cycle time. Injection-compression moulding or two-stage filling is preferred for large flat flanges to prevent warpage beyond 0.8 mm over 250 mm span. Outdoor weathering acceptance is evaluated under ISO 4892-2 method B with colour change ΔE CIE 1976 L*a*b* ≤ 5.0 after 3,000 h, and impact retention is tested according to ISO 179-1/1eA at -20 °C. The applicable regulatory boundary includes REACH Annex XVII restrictions, RoHS 2011/65/EU for lead and cadmium, and Construction Products Regulation documentation when the component is sold as a harmonised building product. Terminal finished products are dark-coloured roof ventilation collars, skylight flashing clamping rings, polygonal louvre shutter end plates, gutter downpipe unions, and façade drainage channel outlet spouts.

Thermal Cycling Tolerance in Air-Source Heat Pump Condenser Guards

For condenser-guard mouldings installed in coastal and Alpine heat-pump arrays, the critical load is not UV alone but rapid thermal fatigue: the guard must tolerate repeated transition from -20 °C night air to 65 °C compressor discharge surface temperature within 15 min. Luran® S KR2864C enters this process at 100 parts virgin resin, 2–4 parts carbon-black masterbatch, and less than 15 parts regrind because higher levels promote brittle failure at injection-weld lines after 2,000 thermal cycles. Drying is mandatory at 80 °C for 4 h in dehumidified air; processing uses melt temperature 240–260 °C, mould temperature 65–85 °C, and a clamp force of 5–7 kN/cm² projected area for louvre panels with 2.0–2.5 mm wall. Gate placement is constrained to the cold-flow edge, and weld lines are moved away from high-wind load ribs; mould trials on 3.5 mm rib intersections show that sharp internal corners without radius 1.5 mm cause stress cracking after 1,200–1,500 cycles under salt spray. First-stage injection is set to high velocity for thin louvre slats, followed by reduced pack pressure to prevent gas traps at the fixed-side textured surface. The compliance set includes ISO 179-1/1eA impact at -30 °C, ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 UV exposure, ISO 9227 neutral salt-spray testing, and ISO 1133-1 MVR control after regrind inclusion. Terminal parts are heat-pump condenser louvre panels, fan cowl covers, compressor access covers, and outdoor air-conditioning discharge grilles.

Garden tractor hoods, spa shell skirts, and recreational vehicle exterior lower panels are moulded from Luran® S KR2864C to obtain a matte, uniformly pigmented surface that resists diesel exhaust staining and seasonal UV exposure during storage. The dry-blend ratio is 100 parts virgin resin, 1.5–2.5 parts custom colour masterbatch, 20–30 parts clean regrind from trimmed hood edges, and 0.1–0.3 parts external mould release for deep-draw hood shapes. The manufacturing line runs on an 800–1,200 t injection machine with melt temperature 235–255 °C, mould temperature 55–75 °C, and sequential valve-gate control to eject air traps from the large hood surfaces. Drying is set at 80 °C for 4 h; residual moisture above 0.05 % causes gas splay at the front nose radius. Mechanical acceptance follows ISO 527-2 tensile modulus, ISO 178 flexural modulus, and ISO 179-1/1eA notched impact at -30 °C; colour fastness is assessed by ISO 4892-2 method A with ΔE ≤ 4.0 after 2,000 h. Regulatory boundaries are REACH and RoHS 2011/65/EU; for products exported to California, Proposition 65 screening for styrene monomer migration is applied at component-level when food-contact is excluded. Terminal finished goods include garden tractor hood assemblies, spa cabinet side skirts, RV lower corner mouldings, and portable generator housing panels.
