Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA KR2863C

Injection moulding of KR2863C into exterior mirror shells and high-gloss B-pillar covers on a 2 000 kN clamp-force machine requires the resin to be predried at 80 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture below 0.02 %. The formulation addition ratio for non-black body-colour parts is 100 parts dried KR2863C to 2–4 parts ASA-carrier colour masterbatch; black parts are run as supplied when the OEM colour certification permits. The downstream production process is hot-runner injection moulding with a barrel temperature profile of 235 °C / 245 °C / 250 °C / 250 °C from feed throat to nozzle, mould temperature 60–80 °C, holding pressure 40–70 MPa, and back pressure 4–8 MPa. Terminal product types include exterior mirror shells, B-pillar appliques, door beltline trims, and cowl vent grilles.

High-gloss black parts produced from KR2863C are sensitive to gate blush and weld-line visibility at thin-wall sections below 2.2 mm. A sequentially valve-gated three-drop hot runner with a 0.8 mm gate diameter is used to move the weld line to a low-visibility plane on mirror housings; injection velocity is held at 40–80 mm/s to prevent flow-front cooling before the A-pillar return. On a 1 600 kN production press, filling time is limited to 1.4–1.8 s for a 185 g B-pillar cover; longer filling time produces surface cracks at the gate vestige after 3 000 h accelerated weathering according to ISO 4892-2:2013, Cycle 1, Method A. Weathering compliance for exterior automotive applications is assessed with SAE J2527 and ISO 4892-2:2013; colour difference is measured by ASTM D2244-23 as CIELAB ΔE*ab, with the limiting ΔE defined by individual OEM material specifications. Approved end-use systems maintain dimensional stability only when the mould shrinkage value from the supplier datasheet is applied to tool dimension calculation, because actual shrinkage is influenced by gate freeze, packing pressure, and tool-surface texture; published data for this specific configuration is limited because gloss retention is tool-dependent.

When capstock thickness drops to 0.20 mm, what preserves corner impact in PVC window profiles?

In capstock coextrusion over rigid PVC outer lineals, KR2863C is metered at 100 % top-layer formulation with no let-down. The cap layer is held at 0.20–0.50 mm over a 2.0–3.0 mm PVC substrate; colour concentrates are dosed at 2–4 phr only when the carrier is an ASA resin, because an EVA or PE carrier reduces corner impact after welding, as measured by ISO 179-1 at −20 °C. The downstream production process uses two extruders feeding a co-extrusion die with a 250 mm slot width and adjustable restrictor bar; ASA layer melt temperature at die entry is 230–245 °C, while the PVC stream is maintained at 180–195 °C. Terminal product types include window outer lineals, siding panels, soffit boards, and fascia profiles.

A cap layer below 0.20 mm creates a thickness-driven viscosity mismatch at the die exit, visible as flow lines perpendicular to extrusion direction. The melt pressure in the ASA extruder rises to 18–25 MPa at screw speed 35–50 min⁻¹; if held above 25 MPa, gel particles form at the breaker plate and surface defects appear on dark-brown profiles. Screw design with L/D 30 and a Maddock mixing section is used to maintain melt temperature below 245 °C because residence time beyond 20 min shifts capstock yellow index. The compliance chain for this segment is summarised below.

    TestStandardCondition / requirement
Weathering of dark capstockISO 4892-2:20130.35 W/m²·nm at 340 nm, BPT 65 °C, 102 min dry / 18 min water spray
Colour difference after exposureASTM D2244-23CIELAB ΔE*ab according to system certificate
Profile impact after corner weldingISO 179-1Notched Charpy at −20 °C, no brittle failure at weld seam

For outdoor telecommunication enclosures and antenna shrouds, KR2863C is processed as 100 parts virgin resin with up to 10 % clean in-plant regrind from sprues and runners; the regrind is added only after being dried below 0.02 % moisture. The downstream production process is conventional injection moulding with a melt temperature of 240–260 °C, mould temperature 50–70 °C, and wall thickness maintained at 2.5–3.5 mm to meet impact and stiffness requirements. Terminal product types include RRU shrouds, outdoor Wi-Fi access point housings, smart meter boxes, and IP camera domes.

Compliance for this segment is driven by UL 94 at 1.5 mm HB, UL 746C outdoor suitability category f1 where the final assembly is listed, IEC 60529 for IP55/IP65 enclosure protection, and IEC 62208 for empty enclosure performance. The solar-load sag resistance of a 3 mm wall is confirmed by heat deflection temperature testing to ISO 75-2 using 1.8 MPa load; published data for this specific configuration is limited because final UL listing depends on the full assembly, gasket material, and internal heat sources. In production, cosmetic defects arise at knit lines around cable entry bosses when gate-to-fill distance exceeds 180 mm; a two-drop hot runner with 1.0 mm valve gates is specified to place the weld line in a non-visible rear wall.

Lawn tractor hoods, mower shrouds, and gas-assisted feed channel design

KR2863C is used for large-surface lawn tractor hoods and mower shrouds where gas-assisted injection moulding reduces sink marks at boss intersections. The formulation addition ratio is 100 phr KR2863C, with 3–5 phr ASA-carrier UV-stabilized black or charcoal masterbatch. Processing on a 3 200 kN gas-assisted machine with L/D 24 plasticising unit uses melt temperature 245–255 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C, and nitrogen gas injection pressure 12–20 MPa introduced after 70 % volumetric fill. Gas channels of 8–12 mm diameter are placed along hood ribs; the process window is limited by gas breakthrough when channel-wall thickness drops below 3 mm. Compliance is assessed to ISO 4892-2:2013 for colour retention, ISO 179-1 Charpy notched impact at −30 °C, and UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm. Terminal product types are ride-on mower hoods, grass collector covers, snowthrower engine shrouds, and rear engine covers for professional turf equipment.

Thermoforming KR2863C sheet without predrying produces microvoids at plug-assist contact zones

During sheet extrusion for spa cabinet panels and RV exterior access doors, KR2863C is processed at 100 % dry resin with 2–4 % ASA-carrier colour concentrate. Sheet extrusion on a 120 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 28 and polished roll stack at 70–85 °C yields sheet thickness from 2.0 mm to 5.0 mm; residual moisture above 0.04 % causes microvoids at plug-assist contact zones after thermoforming because trapped water expands into microcellular defects. The downstream process is plug-assisted thermoforming at sheet surface temperature 145–165 °C, mould temperature 60–75 °C, and forming air pressure 0.3–0.6 MPa. Compliance for the finished panel includes ISO 4892-2:2013 weatherability, ASTM D638-14 tensile yield retention after water exposure, and ISO 178 flexural strength. Terminal product types include spa cabinet side panels, RV baggage door outer skins, and outdoor equipment covers. Contact with chlorinated pool water aerosol at 25–40 °C must be validated by the converter, because published data for this specific configuration is limited.

If gate-freeze time exceeds 1.2 s in outdoor HVAC condenser louver panels

Outdoor HVAC condenser louvered grilles and heat pump service doors use KR2863C in thin-wall injection moulding to replace painted steel. The formula addition ratio is 100 parts KR2863C with 2–5 parts ASA-carrier UV-stabilized masterbatch; no external impact modifier is required, because the grade maintains the specified notched impact at −20 °C. The downstream production process is multi-cavity injection moulding with valve gates; mould temperature 60–80 °C, melt temperature 240–260 °C, and hydraulic clamping force from 2 000 kN to 4 000 kN depending on louver area. The limiting variable is gate-freeze time; when it exceeds 1.2 s the louver ribs exhibit sink marks and the flatness after 24 h exceeds 0.8 mm per 500 mm span. Compliance for outdoor use is checked to UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, UL 746C f1 for exposed enclosures, ISO 4892-2:2013 for UV ageing, and IEC 60068-2-6 for vibration limits. Terminal product types are condenser louver panels, fan guards, service doors, and outdoor heat pump covers.
