Application of INEOS Styrolution Luran®S ASA KR2859

Automotive exterior mirror housings, A-pillar trims, and plenum grilles are injection-moulded from Luran® S ASA KR2859 on three-zone reciprocating-screw machines with L/D ratios of 20:1 to 22:1, compression ratios of 2.3:1 to 2.6:1, and non-return valves specified for low-viscosity styrenics. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 4 h with dew point below −18 °C reduces moisture to 0.05 % or lower; hopper residence time above 30 min at ambient relative humidity above 70 % restores sufficient moisture to produce splay at gate areas. Melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained between 250 °C and 270 °C, while mould coolant inlet temperature of 60 °C to 80 °C is controlled by press-side thermolators with ±1 °C stability. Injection velocity is profiled to avoid flow-front hesitation at radii below 1.5 mm; fill time for a 2.2 mm nominal wall mirror housing typically falls between 1.2 s and 1.8 s. Holding pressure begins at 70 % of peak injection pressure for 4 s and steps to 40 % for 6 s; gate freeze is confirmed by part weight plateau when increasing hold time in 0.5 s increments. Multi-gated cowl vent grilles use geometrically balanced runner systems with volumetric fill variation not exceeding 2 %; knit-line gloss differences are then measurable with gloss meters at 60 ° incident angle according to ISO 2813, with acceptance limits set at ±1.5 GU on grained surfaces. Weathering compliance for exterior installations is assessed under SAE J2527 with xenon arc filtered to daylight behind glass and ISO 4892-2 cycle 1; OEM specifications commonly require 1,500 kJ/m² to 2,500 kJ/m² at 340 nm with ΔEab* below 2.0 for dark grey or black moulded-in colour. Terminal products include exterior mirror shells, side repeater housings, and windscreen cowl grilles. Continuous dark-colour panel surface temperatures above 85 °C in parked vehicles require design clearance and clip flexibility allowances because ASA modulus declines with temperature.

Why Are Curtain Wall Mullion End Caps Switched from Painted ABS to ASA?

Building enclosure components made from KR2859 include injection-moulded mullion end caps, transom closures, and thermal-break cover strips with wall stock between 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm. The substitution of painted ABS is driven by reduced maintenance after outdoor exposure in chloride-bearing urban air and wet-dry cycling; painted ABS edges show gloss loss and chalking earlier than ASA surfaces when tested to ISO 4892-2 cycle 2 at 2,000 kJ/m² at 340 nm. Moulding is performed with cavity counts from 4 to 16, melt temperatures of 240 °C to 260 °C, and mould temperatures of 50 °C to 70 °C. Gate locations are placed on non-visible undersides; for textured show faces with VDI 3400 27 to 30, edge gates with land length below 0.8 mm create jetting, so fan gates or sprue gates with cold-slug wells are used. Hold pressure is calibrated by part weight: pressure is increased in 10 bar increments until no further weight increase occurs, then set 10 % higher to secure gate seal. Polyurethane sealant contact areas are tested after 72 h cured-bead adhesion per ISO 37; aromatic hydrocarbon-containing cartridges can soften ASA surfaces when sustained contact pressure exceeds 0.1 MPa, requiring a pre-applied protective tape or sealant change. The end caps are non-load-bearing closure elements and are not covered by structural provisions of the Construction Products Regulation; if reaction-to-fire classification is required, testing to EN 13501-1 is performed on the final assembly, and unfilled ASA grades are generally not used where class B-s1,d0 is specified. REACH SVHC screening is verified at lot level; RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II limits for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE are supported by supplier compliance declarations. Terminal products include aluminium-framed curtain wall end caps, pressure plate covers, and mullion base closures.

When replacement of solvent-borne painted ABS in agricultural machinery dash bezels is specified for UV-stable interiors, KR2859 is first screened for chemical resistance to diesel splash, hydraulic oil, and urea solution. Injection moulding trials on 120 t to 250 t machines use hardened mould inserts and shuttle valve gates behind boss locations to prevent droplet-shaped flow lines. Melt temperature is limited to 245 °C to 265 °C; above 270 °C, total residence time is kept below 10 min to avoid yellowing of light grey textured surfaces. Mould cooling circuits are balanced to hold surface temperature variation below ±2 °C, because differential shrinkage across a 350 mm long dash bezel changes the aperture dimensions for rocker switches. Holding pressure is profiled at 60 % of injection peak for 5 s, then 30 % for 8 s, minimising sink around threaded brass insert bosses. The terminal assembly uses heat-staked pins; ultrasonic welding is avoided unless amplitude profiling keeps horn amplitude below 20 µm, because ASA softens rapidly at higher energy input. Environmental stress-cracking resistance is screened using ISO 22088-3 bent-strip method with diesel-contaminated cotton cloth at 0.5 % strain for 24 h; cracking at boss edges requires radius increase above 0.8 mm. Terminal components include combine dash bezels, fender extensions, and PTO lever covers. Published data for KR2859-specific urea exposure above 60 °C is limited; field trials must be completed before serial implementation.

Thermal Ageing Boundaries in Outdoor Telecom Enclosure Covers

Outdoor telecommunication enclosure covers and antenna shroud frames moulded from KR2859 require simultaneous control of heat build-up and UV-induced surface micro-cracking. Moulding trials on 450 t machines with hot-runner valve gates and cavity pressures of 400 bar to 600 bar show that hold-pressure termination must coincide with gate seal at the valve stem, not at cavity pressure zero. Wall thickness is held between 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm to meet impact requirements under ISO 179/1eA at 23 °C; bosses for cable glands require surrounding wall stock of 2.0 mm and base radius not less than 0.6 mm. Weathering per ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 is specified at 3,000 kJ/m² at 340 nm for desert installations; colour change on dark grey surfaces should remain below 3.0 ΔEab*. If the enclosure must meet IEC 60529 IP65, the gasket groove should be machined after moulding rather than formed by a sliding core to avoid weld-line leakage paths. Flame-retardant requirements are outside the scope of KR2859; UL 94 V-0 enclosures require a different compounded grade or an intumescent coating system applied after plasma surface activation. Thermal ageing is evaluated at 85 °C for 1,000 h in air-circulating ovens to ISO 188; elongation retention above 70 % of the unfilled moulded value is expected for stabilised ASA, but published data for KR2859 at 100 °C is limited. Terminal products include small-cell base station shrouds, fibre distribution closures, and outdoor Wi-Fi covers.

Marine Hatch Frame Mouldings and Salt-Fog Exposure Control

Marine hatch frame tools with wall stocks from 2.5 mm to 5.0 mm are used to mould non-structural hatch frames, ventilation louvres, and instrument console surrounds from KR2859; thick bosses are cored to maintain uniform cooling. Melt temperature is set at 250 °C to 270 °C, and mould temperature at 70 °C to 80 °C for low surface stress. Draft angles of 1.5 ° to 2.0 ° on texture depth up to 25 µm VDI 3400 33 prevent ejection drag. Gate location is moved to the perimeter with a fan gate 0.8 mm thick; centre gating on louvre arrays creates jetting and visible flow lines between blade openings. Salt-fog resistance of ASA is related to its low water absorption below 0.5 % after 24 h immersion to ISO 62, but moulded-in stress at metal insert bosses remains a failure source under marine salt spray. Inserts should be preheated to 80 °C and installed with 0.5 mm surrounding wall stock to avoid radial cracking after 1,000 h neutral salt spray to ISO 9227. Fastener loads on hatch frames should not exceed 2 N·m for self-tapping screws into 6 mm bosses; higher torque produces boss cracking. Terminal products include deck hatch frames, louvred vent covers, and helm station bezels. Continuous exposure to chlorinated cleaning agents should be avoided because amorphous ASA can stress-crack under combined chemical and mechanical load.

For RV exterior ventilation grilles and outdoor speaker covers, KR2859 is moulded with single-cavity tools or two-plate family tools at melt temperatures of 250 °C to 260 °C and mould temperatures of 60 °C to 70 °C. The specification is limited to UV weathering to ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 at 1,500 kJ/m², and painting is not required when using moulded-in colour. The main process constraint is gate blush on textured grille bars; a modified fan gate with 0.7 mm land length reduces blush compared with edge gating. Terminal products include refrigerator vent covers, furnace access panels, and exterior audio grilles.
